- For the Huichol people, art is a means of encoding and channeling sacred knowledge. It is considered a form of prayer, providing direct communion with the sacred realm.
Cilau Valadez is the son of renowned Huichol artist Mariano Valadez and anthropologist Susana Eger Valadez. He grew up in Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit Mexico. Cilau’s parents were the founders of The Huichol Center, non-profit organization that has provided medical aid, food, shelter and artist training to hundreds of Huichol migrants who worked in inhumane conditions throughout the nearby tobacco fields.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
Watching this as a person of Wixarika descent( my maternal grandma) and feeling so proud! Wish I could have grown up with the culture 🧡 Thank you for sharing!
My family is from San Pedro Lagunillas, Nayarit and being able to watch someone speak on our traditions and our culture is beautiful 🥹❤️🇲🇽
My grandmother is native huichol and i always got these beautiful beaded necklaces from Mexico that she would bring back. I am happy that the culture and art is still being recognized
Glad you got to find this part of your lineage. My abuela turned 104 this year and she's the only one of our family that is 100% native.
What area is she from?
Frm Texas .... my father born in 1947 still alive and his grandmother was hoichol 100 percent,, which would be my great grandfather/mother was Frm hoichol tribe , I seen birth certificates!! I was happy to know my roots
I'm so inspired by this young man's heart and his words. His message should be shared as well as his beautiful artwork.
I agree Tamara! Greetings from México.
Obviously you see him as an outsider. He does not represent the culture well. Not everything that glitters is gold.
I discovered wixarika women in my families lineage. They were colonized and intermarried w other mexicans in zapoteca but were from Jalisco and durango. I hope to reconnect 💖
Wonderful message, thank you so much! Blessings!
I had an amazing healing at the Kiva in the Netherlands by Marakamee Don Alfonso... My wish to visit the village one time in the future is huge.... I feel so connected to the people of the blue deer.... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I'm trying to find out where my grandma's indigenous blood comes from. They are in the Municipal of Ayutla, Jalisco.
Quisiera conocer el nombre del expositor
Él es Álvaro Ortíz
carla hernández no es Alvaro, es de la misma Region de Nayarit. es un artista que se llama Cilau Valadez
Cilau valadez es su nombre
A lot of me me me, it sounds like a biography and justification of his mixed background. Not a lot to learn and he is just using the clothing as a costume. To deliver a good speech and to share your culture words are better than clothing. The people who really knows this culture would see the wrongs justby looking his manerisms and how he hold the feathers. What a clown.
