  • In any community, the past may contain great wrongs--wrongs some residents know nothing about, but others cannot forget. Is it possible for such episodes in human history to be addressed, uplifted, and, ultimately, healed?
In this January 26, 2021 webinar, we explored journalism’s role in this process--shining a light on issues, while also bringing together those on both sides of a troubled past. Listening to all voices can make room for mutual understanding and progress
The webinar focused on the Monitor’s November 2020 “Black Wall Street'' series in the “Rethinking the News” audio section. The series took our reporters to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where in 1921, a white mob destroyed the prosperous Black neighborhood of Greenwood. We explore how Tulsa is rebuilding--physically and mentally--as it prepares for the tragedy’s centennial.
The webinar and audience Q&A features Monitor Editor Mark Sappenfield, Monitor Multimedia Reporter Jessica Mendoza, and Monitor Story Team Leader Samantha Laine Perfas.
