Engineering wise, a dial gauge is designed to have a display range in the way that the most used value or intended use value is at the middle of the range, thus the top of the dial. The real answer is, to save production costs on most of the cars because they have different engines with more or less horsepower. Also it is a good selling point to show that the speedo goes up that high.
This is the reason I was told many years ago. It has nothing to do with filling in the speedometer so it didn't look weird. They can turn the gage to make it look right
My opinion is, if you need a motor to do 7200rpm, you don't get a motor that does 7200rpm and run it at max because that will destroy the lifespan. Instead you get a motor that does 14400rpm so at normal operating speeds the motor is not maxed out but only runs at 50% of what it can do which is why cars last 20-40 years easy. So of you need a car to do 50-80mph, then the car should be able to do 100-160mph. Me personally, I have never seen a dodge omni with a hemi engine because then you just swap to a better vehicle, which would cost the company money. The best way to prevent this IS to make engines with more or less horsepower. I never read this anywhere, this is just my opinion so I could be wrong, but makes sense.

It’s also because, if your car could only go max of 70mph your engine would be working at max constantly and wear out sooner, allowing for more speed (while you may never use it) means the engine can work at a lower overall power and last longer
Yup! They put speed governors on cars for this exact reason, to limit the stress on various parts of the car. A lot of cars are governed at around 120-130mph but capable of going around 150mph+. It’s a lot safer to prevent a car from going to its absolute limits so that it doesn’t essentially self destruct. Also another fact, the most commonly used tires have a speed rating of “H” meaning they can only handle speeds of up to 130mph consistently before their integrity is compromised.
@@dy1angi11ey6 most cars are governed at 155, cars that are limited lower than that is usually because the cars may become unstable or unsafe at those speeds due to aerodynamics or tires.
@@ethanjones8093 most cars have a electronic speed limiter though there's no standard on this. However many German cars I've encountered are limited to 150 MPH and have a sticker stating as much.
On my bike it's different. The speedo stops at 299 kph (186mph), although I reach that speed in 5th gear and still have a 6th gear. A very common thing on Japanese sportsbikes. Early 2000's when the Kawasaki Z1400R was battling the Suzuki GSX-R 1300 (Hayabusa) for highest topspeed, a Japanese law was installed to deter people from riding their bikes as fast as they dared for braggingrights. Those bikes reached speeds of 340 kph (215mph) which leaded to a rise in fatal crashes. So Japanese bike manufacturers were prohibited to make speedometers that showed speeds above 299kph. Even the topspeed of the bikes was limited to 299kph...but it was quite easy to undo that limitation just by cutting a wire or by fiddling with the bikes ECU
Plus it just makes the consumer think more highly of the car. A sort of marketing thing. “Let’s put high numbers on the speedometer, it’ll make the consumer feel like they’re going fast even when they’re not.”
@@TheCovertythat is what got my eyes on this one cadillac, it has a digital dash and it can turn off everything besides the mph/kph for maximum focus at night. Absolutely love that

I hate people who say "my car can do this speed because the speedometer shows it and so that must be its capability" and also considering it's a civic the gauge was probably in kmhs so he must have confused that for mph can you imagine him speaking to girls and saying "yeah I regularly do 100 mph on the highway" when it was just 100 kmh which translates to 60 mph
When I was little, I was told that the reason was because if you took off the speed limiter and retuned the engine. That was what the vehicle's true top was. I was clearly lied to.
nah its about costs cutting so weaker cars are fitted with the same speedometer like their stronger counterparts. For example: if you have a Golf 3 with the 1.4l 54hp engine you still gonna have the same speedometer as the stronger and faster Golf 3 with the 2.8l VR6 174hp. You were clearly lied to twice😆

Me on the autobahn: I bought the whole car, imma use the whole car.
Me in this video: “if they did it so it dont look weird than why does it look like my car can go 200mph”
@@conradbreitfeller3841 Um mostly they are governed at 100mph to 120mph.
Cars can go quicker they just have engine limiters to avoid going in certain speed due to safety for the driver and other drivers around

Germans, porsche's, ferarri's, lambo's, mclaren's and koeninggsegg's: and we took that personally
"Aye maine you know i got dat 220 on da dash"
Even the topspeed of the bikes was limited to 299kph...but it was quite easy to undo that limitation just by cutting a wire or by fiddling with the bikes ECU

bro, my dad went so fast the speedometer fucking started doing that thing that it does in shows, like when it freaks the fuck out
Plus it just makes the consumer think more highly of the car. A sort of marketing thing. “Let’s put high numbers on the speedometer, it’ll make the consumer feel like they’re going fast even when they’re not.”

In Germany, the car isn't fast enough until you start to get scared when you open it up. And yes, we definitely need the whole speedometer. Of course, there are also lurkers in our country. But on the left lane of the highway it is better not to sneak. Greetings from Germany!

why do germans act like they're the only country where people drive fast on a motorway, people regularly travel at 120mph in the UK when there isn't traffic
@@JALC-x Because 120mph ist pretty slow.
@@JALC-x the difference is, we're legally allowed to go as fast as we want to. It's very common to drive 200+ on the autobahn, if your car can do it. Even my Grandma goes 220 sometimes in her Opel haha

The stoichiometric ratio is commonly at the point where the needle sands straight up. This is the best speed for air / fuel mixture of your vehicle. This also played a big role in determining the number orientation on a speedometer.
ahh thats why my speed is so hard to see when i drive 140mph in germany.

I hate people who say "my car can do this speed because the speedometer shows it and so that must be its capability" and also considering it's a civic the gauge was probably in kmhs so he must have confused that for mph
can you imagine him speaking to girls and saying "yeah I regularly do 100 mph on the highway" when it was just 100 kmh which translates to 60 mph

When I was little, I was told that the reason was because if you took off the speed limiter and retuned the engine. That was what the vehicle's true top was. I was clearly lied to.
Not rlly
nah its about costs cutting so weaker cars are fitted with the same speedometer like their stronger counterparts. For example: if you have a Golf 3 with the 1.4l 54hp engine you still gonna have the same speedometer as the stronger and faster Golf 3 with the 2.8l VR6 174hp. You were clearly lied to twice😆
It makes sense since you wouldn't want a pac-man or a pizza slice for a speedometer
Not really, you could spread out the speeds you actually use a lot more so it goes from 0 to 60 with 30 60 bring more of it. Then we could actually control our speed a little better and maybe less tickets
@@dougrogan379 oh thanks
@@dougrogan379 If you can't control your speed with a regular speedo then you shouldn't be driving. Oh and the mechanism that controls the gauge isn't 100% precise anyway so it'd be pointless to add an appreciation lower than 5.
