  • Today we taste and review Colonel E.H. Taylor 4 Grain Bottled in Bond, Jim Murray’s whiskey of the year.
    Check out Whiskey Biscuits Episode 2: • The Ultimate Whisk(e)y...
    Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    You should make your own Whiskey of the Year Award.
    Both consumers and companies love this kind of stuff. I know I would love something like this for December episodes.
    If you want you could make a choice from among several contenders. Introduce a top 5 and then pick a winner after the tasting.
    You could even have several awards: Best Bourbon, Best Scotch etc with, maybe, an overall WOTY award.

    Hey fellas,
    I just wanted to say firstly I never considered myself a whiskey drinker... matter of fact I never experienced any liquor I actually liked to drink. My brother in law introduced me to Jameson and I found myself not only enjoying it but drinking it neat was a very pleasant experience. So much so I bought my own bottle when I got back from our trip to see my sister and her family. I then found your channel and have been making a list of things I want to try. Right now I’m sipping Jameson Black Barrel and I’m glad I have developed this new affliction for whiskey. Before this trip the only whiskey I’d really tried was Crown Royal which my parents swear by. Needless to say it’s not for me, I’d be interested in seeing what you guys think of it since I’ve come to respect your opinions above most others on the internet. So I thank you for your time and effort to help myself and others like me discover just how diverse the world of whiskey can be.
    Sláinte 🥃

    Hi guys! I've been watching your channel since March and I've been addicted ever since. Since B.W (Before Whiskey Vault) I did enjoy some whisky now and then, but I never got into the real tasting and exploring flavor. However, after I've watched your channel it's completely changed my pallet. I'm more aware of the tasting notes and I'm experimenting with a lot more brands and types than I normally did.
    I usually preferred the Macallan 12, Highland Park 18 (still one of my favorites) and Dalmore 12. It was a cheaper time indeed. Now I have set a monthly budget to purchase new whisky bottles, you damn bastards! I'm writing this as I'm ordering Laphroaig Lore, Laphroaig Tripple Wood and Bowmore 18.
    I noticed you have the Glenfiddich Project XX behind you in this video, bottom left (0:03). I recently purchased it myself and it was amazing! Would like to know your thoughts on this one in the future.
    Anyway, even though you're costing me plenty of money I appreciate the effort going into making these videos. Daniel's stories are great for conversations when I have friends over for some whisky tasting, much appreciated. Rex, let Daniel get a few dad jokes now and then :-)
    Best regards from Norway, I'm hoping to go to one of your classes in the near future. Cheers!

    Best whiskey for and advanced whiskey drinker is: Fireball.... you need an advanced pallet to appreciate the subtle nuances of that unique drink

      no just no........make your own home made stuff if need be. cinnamon sticks and a mason jar.

      Fireball is for college kids looking to get hammered and for mixed drinks. I really like Angry Balls- Angry Orchard apple cider and Fireball.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      ive never tried that but holy fuck does it sound amazing.
      also fireball is for hobo's if you want spicy whiskey you make cinnamon whiskey yourself. there are a number of recipes and you can actually get a much better product.
      we use it specifically for mixing at parties with my friends and such. tried a bunch of different whiskies but i find crown on sale is good because its not rotgut but its not expensive either and we get good sales on it here in canada.
      my buddy uses a bourbon but he buys bottles in the states, cant remember the distillery but its a smaller craft distillery. not sure if they make their own or source but its rather good neat and amazing mixed up with some cinnamon sticks.
      also try a cherry popper, disarono and dr pepper. i make em a lil steeper then a jack and coke because its got a lower alcohol content.

    • @lonewanderer3603

      haha ill have to give both a try, didnt know they had a cinnamon angry orchard but i love cinnamon. like, i did the cinnamon challenge and didnt die(bmx slang, die means like crash or get messed up)

    My vote is Edradour 10yo single malt Scotch. Don’t add water, but let it sit for 10-15 minutes in the glass at room temp to get the best out of it. This is an evolving experience - the nose out of the bottle is funky, but the initial WTF?! dissipates in time.

  • @charlespeliska7054

    For an advanced whiskey, I kind of like the Glenfiddich 15 Solara - yeah, the Solara can kind of cover some of the aspects, but it has a lot of nuances that make it enjoyable to explore, but without it beating you behind the woodshed after a couple of glasses.

    Hey, Rex and Daniel!
    I would love to see you guys review The Glenlivet 18. A UA-cam search yielded no results as to you guys having reviewed it before, and as that was my introduction to scotch, and whiskey as a whole, I would love to see your guys' thoughts. Being fairly new to the wonderful world of whiskey, your content has been fun, hilarious, and super helpful and informative. Keep it up!

    Top three whiskies for advanced folk? I would say Mosstowie (ideally from signatory) try it for menthol surprises, deanston 18 (i see you have a bottle in your shelf) very subtle and time needed, octomore 8.3 (if this is your first rodeo you are toast, and very burnt toast at that)

  • @garrettjanssen7683
    @garrettjanssen7683 7 років тому +1

    Because of my budget most of the whiskies I've had have been in the sub $80. That being said, my advanced picks are:
    Balblair (the younger vintages, basically the ~10yr) one of the few 9/10s I've awarded
    Clynelish 14 - The whisky that got me into whisky but one I did not like until halfway through the bottle and then it all *clicked*
    Wild Turkey 101 - It's really hard to believe this robust of a bourbon is widely available and for sub $30.
    Honorable mention to Independent Bottlings of Cragganmore. I am not a fan of the standard 12, but I had a sample of Cragganmore 21 John Milroy (BB&R) cask #2882. Might as well been from a different distillery. It really was outstanding. Also throw in Bunnahabhains and Linkwoods
    Keep up the good work Daniel and Rex

    Unfortunately here in Virginia all E.H. Taylor whiskies are lottery bottles. You need to be one of the lucky few to win the opportunity to purchase one of these bottles. Next time I am in a non-control state I will need to search every liquor store I pass in hopes I get lucky and find one there.

    Advanced whiskey recommendations: I think some Independent bottlings are very subtle, but complex. The un-chill filtered line from Signatory has some really interesting offerings (I'll let you choose). I'd also recommend Springbank. And 3rd, maybe some Compass Box (Flaming Heart is good).

    Hello Gentlemen, thank you so much for showing the world that whisk(e)y can be special, enjoyable, exciting, and diverse. Most of all thank you for opening my eyes to new flavors, and adventures in whisk(e)y. Speaking of which, I just got married a couple weeks ago, and two of my groomsman decided to purchase a whisk(e)y as a gift the only stipulation was under $100. Thanks to you the two worlds were the deliciously smokey world of Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Heavily Peated, and the complexly brilliant world of Macallan 15(which I sip as I watch this episode). Thank you!

      Also, took my honeymoon to Colorado, half of which was spent in Estes park(if you haven't been you should). While there I found that there is a local whisk(e)y, the only spirit legally distilled in Estes park, called Elkins Colorado Whisky. Quite an interesting experience. I found "laughy taffy" on the nose and pallet(my wife agreed with the nose, but doesn't drink), too sweet for my tastes, but made me think maybe you guys should try and get your hands on, and review, some local specific whisk(e)y.

    Ardbeg Corryvreckan, and Lagavulin 16 (which I know will probably both be in the comments a lot) but my out there one that I really enjoy, and can find something new each time is Suntory's Hakushu 12. I've been thinking about challenging whisky and a thought popped in my head...
    After hearing some Scotch described as smelling like Band-Aids, I was surprised when I tried something recently (I think it was the Springbank 19) and that's EXACTLY what I smelled!
    My thought today was, Band-Aids have been around for some time, but Scotch has been around longer. So really, it's the Band-Aids that smell like Scotch...not the other way around.

    Hi Rex and Daniel, I wanted your advice about limiting down some whiskeys for a tasting I am going to try and do over Christmas. I was originally just going to buy some for a friend as a Christmas present but after watching the show I've started to enjoy learning and trying whiskeys myself and now we are going to try and get some friends together to do our own little whiskey tasting event. I don't know what he will bring to the table yet but I have about 10 that I am trying to whittle down to 4-5. We are thinking about variety rather than all the same type. Here is what I have (or am planning to get by Christmas) .
    Russell's Reserve 6 year Rye
    Templeton 6 year Rye
    Angel's Envy Rye
    Sazerac Rye
    4 Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
    Angel's Envy Bourbon
    Monkey Should
    Longmorn 16
    Balvenie 12 Double Wood
    Hibiki Harmony
    And if there is something you guys might recommend to round out the selections please let me know!

    • @WhiskeyVault

      I know right! I wouldn't mind trying them all at the tasting, but i think since most of us will be fairly new to this, having 10-12 whiskeys at one sitting might be too much for some people. (Lite Weights!)
      So what would your guy top 5 be in there? or do you have something else you'd recomend? maybe something Irish or Canadian?

    I'm from Brazil and we usually only get big commercial brands on our shops, so I had a "Johnny Black", "Chivas 12", and a "Jack Daniels" in my cupboard. Found myself looking at a big selection in a free-shop at the Uruguayan border. Remembered you guys and thought of buying some different things to experiment on. Got an "Oban 14", "Laphroaig 10", and "Glen Moray 12", representing different regions of Scotland; and a "Makers Mark" for the bourbon... Ran out of money...
    What do you think of those choices?? I know the Glen Moray isn't a classic, but it was the cheapest Speyside they had and, as I said, money was low by then... Wish I could send you a bottle to get reviewed, but I don't think it's legal...

    I️ love the labels on these and every once in a while I’ll go to the store with a budget that would otherwise get me one nice bottle and instead pick up a few of these cheap guys. Best Advanced Whiskey!
    Look, for full disclosure, I've been drinking whiskey (on purpose) for only around 10 years. I started with Bourbon, my favorite probably being Woodford Reserve. But, I have a horrible palate. I do know what I like and I have developed my own commentary for the palate challenged. Whiskey tends to go from Ordered and Smooth, to Chaotic and Spikey. I'm assuming that "advanced whiskey drinkers" are called such because they can pick out the flavors, including those from the Chaotic and Spikey group. Now Chaotic and Spikey doesn't mean it's bad, those can be awesome. But I would be remiss if I didn't also remark that I think Ordered and Smooth can be great whiskey for the advanced as well. There is some remarkably subtle stuff going on in some of those. I think it takes a greater palate to figure them out. So here are my beloved three:
    Chaotic and Spikey: Bunnahabhain 18
    Nearly-Chaotic and Smooth: Ardbeg Corryvreckan
    Ordered and Smooth: Suntory Hibiki Harmony
    Hibiki also has the benefit of being something you can hand to just about anyone.

    Daniel often talks about music reviewers and how you find one whose taste matches your own and just agree with them forever. That's how I feel about Daniel's taste in scotch.
    Laphroaig Lore is my favorite Laphroaig by far. I think it tastes more like something from the Lagavulin line (my favorite distillery).
    I'm interested to find out if Daniel has ever tried the Lagavulin 10 (travel exclusive). I find it to be like the inverse of Laphroaig Lore. It's a Lagavulin that tastes like Laphroaig.

      I have a bottle of An Oa. It's a lot like Uigeadail but tamer with the peat and a little brinier. . On the nose Salty and brine, raisins, vanilla custard, sweet cherry and more if I sit with it. Taste the peat speaks right up front. Its a holder of flavors rather than a covering of. TCP 's or band aids after the smoke, brined seaweed, sea salt, licorice, pepper, salty caramel, a very faint hit of Vanilla as it ends in smoke, campfires. A comforting fire place. Finish is long, peppery and sweet. Not so sweet as to be distracting, but very pleasant.
      Would buy again. Forgot to mention it has no coloring and is non-chill filtered . So DOUBLE THUMBS UP.

    Hey Daniel and Rex! I'd like to request a review on Glenlivet: Founder's Reserve. I know it's a NAS whisky, but I'd like to see how it stacks up to other Glenlivet expressions. The price point makes me think that it's one of the NAS whiskies whose focus is not to be as good as possible regardless of age, but instead to be released to market quickly in order to make money. However, that doesn't mean it's also not a great whisky. Curious to see what you think about it! If you decide to do this review, let me know so I can make sure I pick up a bottle and drink with you! Sláinte!

    Recommendation wanted: I know that everyone has different tastes and I have been disappointed with several recommendations as of late. Elijah Craig Small Batch, among others being one of them. On the other hand, I find Knob Creek to be great but still not quite what I am looking for. I will give a descriptor of what I am looking for in a bourbon to see if I can attract some recommendations.
    I am wanting a bourbon that tastes as the name sounds. I want bold, but rounded. I want sweet without being candied. I am looking for dried figs and dates, I am looking for oak to temper the sweetness of the dried fruits and the caramels of the corn. I want a slow burn and not a sharp alcohol bite, but 100 proof is preferred. I want back of the throat and side of the tongue linger of light smoke when finished. I do not want super bright notes that outshine any other note,I want rounded but not muddled flavors. I want a base tone to the drink as if listening to some slow Mississippi Blues.

    So Trader Joe's has a variety of scotch, they have a blended Scotch but also several different single malts from different regions (I saw a Speyside and 10 year old Highland last time I was there), they also have an Irish whisky, Canadian whisky and of course a Bourbon.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      try costco they have grey goose vodka in their own bottle for half price. they also sell 40 year old scotch made by either glenfiddich or glenlivet(cant remember off the top of my head) for 700$ as opposed to thousands. they buy overstock or barrels that dont meet the perfect flavor profile. sorta like how wl weller is pappy that doesnt make the cut.

    • @cephalopodsquids
      @cephalopodsquids 7 років тому

      I have gotten some of the Kirkland brand as well, got some of their bourbon and while it is a good price it was actually more expensive than some of the other name brand bourbons and not for proverbial Costco sized either (slightly bigger at 1 liter you can get a Bulleit their in the 1.75 liter). I think the nearest Costco's store manager is a whiskey drinker because their collection is pretty impressive considering well the usual lack of diversity at Costco in things (for instance I think they had the most of the list of t0 best beginner whiskeys, including the Hibiki Harmony and others besides).

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      might be who is making their bourbon because they literally bought a grey goose factory to have them make their fancy vodka. and their scotch the 40 year old is glenlivet. they also have a cognac or had one that came from one of the higher end cognac houses in france.
      and damn thats lucky costco here in canada doesnt sell booze as far as ive seen. and where i live we have a liquor board that is run by the government, and yeah they jack prices on the stupidest shit, like wl weller was only 7$ more here then in the states yet some other bottles are double or more. like knob creek is 50$ here, elijah craig is 48, buffalo trace is 43, bulliet is 40, but then some other stuff priced more along whatd youd expect.

    • @cephalopodsquids
      @cephalopodsquids 7 років тому

      Well kirkland brand has several different versions of scotch, and they disappear from time to time (and might change). They actually have two different types of vodka "signature american" and "signature french". Overall it is cheaper to buy it at Costco and the Kirkland brands are definitely a good deal with the equivalent being either cheaper or you getting more.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      the french is the grey goose, the american vodka i forget who makes it but theyre one of the popular vodka brands in the states apparently for cheap vodka that isnt swill.
      as for their scotch yeah ive kinda noticed, they have one from a few years back that just says kirkland plus the age statement and scotch, the newer version of that bottle has glenlivets or glenfiidichs name on the bottle, i forget where they source their barrels but yeah.
      i hear the trader joes scotch isnt bad either. the canadian whiskey has my curious, im wondering where they sourced the whiskey, some of our distilleries are awesome, others make awesome blending whiskey but blend it with crappy shit. our whiskey laws allow up to 6 or 9% i forget which, non water or whiskey, straight up artificial flavor and color. so they take good whiskey blend it with cheap grain whiskey and fake flavors. however a few american distilleries are sourcing our whiskey's preblend and selling them as actual good quality whiskey instead of swill. i believe whistlepig has done this.
      also ifg you ever get to do a canadian whiskey distillery do it up, you get to try rare stuff like the good whiskeys pre blend including stuff they wont source out to other people. like i got to try a 35 year old 100% rye once.

    costco's 40 or 50 year old scotch is quite literally glenfiddich or glen livet bottles, i cant remember which of the top of my head, but yeah. they buy the barrels then bottle it themselves, the barrels either dont meet the perfect flavor profile or are overstock.
    its also 700$ vs thousands for a bottle of more name brand scotch that old.
    when i go to the states if i manage to get a bottle ill send you guys a little sealed bottle of some of it. also their vodka well one of their vodka's is grey goose vodka for half the price, they literally bought a grey goose factory to have it made, grey goose runs it for them from what i was told by a costco employee.
    they also have cognac that comes from some top end cognac houses.
    what they seem to do is take a really low end cheap maker for their cheap stuff, and for their high end stuff seem to find a maker that does super quality stuff then just cut costs by not having any branding besides kirkland and no advertisements. they probably make a large amount of the profit off the cheaper stuff and probably have better margins on that as well.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      oh they also put it on sale for around 300-400 pretty often from what i heard so yeah good way to get an inexpensive but high quality scotch. you could probably also do what my buddy did which was take a fancy bottle of scotch and put something else in it and have no one notice the difference. get an empty bottle of regular glenlivet 40 year old and then refill it with the costco stuff so people think your rich :P or just have fancy taste in booze. plus it is technically a glenlivet or fiddich so its not a total lie :P

    • @lonewanderer3603
      @lonewanderer3603 7 років тому

      You're correct that their vodka is Grey Goose. They also have a great private label tequila but I can't remember off the top of my head who makes it.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 7 років тому

      neither can i, i talked to someone who works at costco higher up one time and they told me about it all and where it comes from.
      i cant remember which cognac house but they have a pretty high end cognac, or had at one point.
      funny note, apparently they also had grey goose hold it to slightly tighter standards then regular grey goose, i forget how exactly but it was something like either an extra filtration or a higher quality ingredient or something like that.

As a college student I dont have the money for expensive whiskeys (which they all are here in NZ), and find myself buying the small bottles of the cheap stuff and regretting it (Johnny Walker Red, Canadian Club), so havent tried truly good whiskey yet. What are the main differences between something like a Johnny Walker Red and say, a Monkey Shoulder, or another one of your beginner whiskeys.

    • @TheRedWon

      Never been interested in trying the Red, but a tip for working on a budget: get a real, 750 ml bottle of something that you'll enjoy (check the best value or beginner friendly whiskey list videos for inspiration) and drink that whiskey in different ways. Try it after having different foods, try it with some water diluting it, try sipping a good pour for an hour and seeing how the taste evolves, etc.
