📚Description:
Tonight we are checking out a viewer's new guitar that he ordered via my NGD service on my website so he could have his new guitar featured on the show! This is the 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent in Aged Antique Natural finish. I had never heard of this epiphone model before but it is one of the original pre-gibson ownership designs that they are paying tribute to this 150th anniversary celebration

Thank you for documenting my guitar, Trogly! Can't wait to play it myself soon
Nice guitar.
Yeah, sweet guitar
Cool guitar, congratulations 🤘
It’s a beautiful guitar ❤ I’ve never seen one before, thanks for sharing 😊
Awesome guitar, congrats!
Thank You Johnathan, Congrats on the new guitar, VERY COOL Sir.
Now this is an Epiphone with cool specs: ebony board, 25.5 scale, cool pickups, unique knobs. So good man.
But it smells like a Chinese guitar lol He's right. They DO have a smell.
Wow this is a Fender scale length??
@@jonathanhudak2059 yes sir. The Epiphone Emperor Regents they made from 95-2011 are also 25.5 scale length.
@ccfmafia3301 cool I did not know that, thank you 👍
I found a beat-up 1950 Epiphone Zephyr Regent in the alley by my apartment, cleaned it up and had to replace the missing floating bridge and broken trapeze tailpiece but it plays and sounds great with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard. Only one pickup and in the bridge, though.
Damn, that's nuts. I'm gonna start going into alleys. Lol
Damn! That's a very cool find! My best find was a late 70's Ibanez Musician bass curbside on trash day. I ended up selling it "as is" for $250 to a guy looking to part it out to fix another bass.
It was pretty rough when I found it.
@thomasrevere7916 I think you're taking the wrong thing away from this story....
Thanks for sharing your awesome new Epiphone with us Jonathon!
I've always been hoping Epiphone would do a Geordie Walker (Killing Joke's guitarist, RIP) tribute model. He famously played a Gibson ES-295 and his tone on mid 80s Killing Joke albums like Night Time was unreal. So resonant and chimey.
The es 295 is his signature guitar
Am I nuts, or did this thing sound absolutely rad with some dirt?
You mean just like every other guitar 🙂
Nope your not. would make a great blues guitar with a little drive behind it.
It did indeed
Agreed!
@@paulsworld2 it makes a great metal guitar
I've just been reading up about the New Yorker pickups; originally they were 'sidewinders' - single coils, but laid on their side rather than upright, with polepieces next to the coil rather than in it, so they appear right on the edge of the cover. They appear to have been wound inconsistently, with some being quite hot at about 8k, and some as low as 3k.
There was one for sale on Reverb some years ago that was 6.66k - the Devil's pickup!
Curtis Novak sells some repos. They're not on his site but you can see them on his social media
To hell with the devil
That is a classy guitar. Epiphone is really got a groove going lately! 👍
I've got a very rare epiphone! Joan Sebastian triunfadora! Most decorated acoustic electric ever made! Hearts, horse shoes, crosses, abalone binding! Thanks 🤘
Thanks Jonathan. Just before Trogley went into playing some Ted Nugent I was thinking it's no Birdland but I'd bet It handles tones like uncle Ted's guitar.
The Byrd land is Ted nugent’s signature guitar
@@SLEEPYDEADBRAIN being someone who is a fan if you couldn't tell I knew what was Ted Nugents weapon of choice on stage
Fun fact: Les Paul actually made the first prototype solid body/center block guitar by getting a piece of pine, putting a neck on it, and sawing an Epiphone zephyr in half and putting the wings on the sides of it to make it look traditional. Another wrinkle on the brain
Yup, that is what Mr. Paul referred to as "The Log". 👍
How else would it be done?
I thought Ren and Stimpy came up with Log
I mean, that was his first, but it wasn’t THE first.
He also cut up some other Epis and added metal rods and plates to cut down on resonance (which discovered he couldn’t get rid of it completely)
He experimented with pickups and hardware
He called them Clunkers
I have the Blues Deluxe model, I absolutely love it. 3 pick up, wonderful for jazz, blues and rockabilly.
This axe is no more my cup of tea than it is yours, Austin, and yet I find myself nearly envious of the buyer. That is one sweet guitar -- and it's TONS more versatile than I ever thought a jazz box could be. It's not for me, but that Epi is a FANTASTIC AXE!
Serial # says Indonesian Epiphone with the "23" after the month code lol. That's a lot more cool than I expected😊
Usually the more expensive Epi's are Korean made. this shows the Indonesian made guitars are improving.
Trogly turns a jazz box into a cowboy guitar. Rock on.
That is not a jazz box that is a very versatile guitar unlike every solid body even the telecaster
Sounds great with distortion - wow!
Makes for a great metalcore guitar
I have one of those and it's a fantastic sounding and playing guitar, I love it! The knobs are not an issue.
Always fun to see Troglys trying to figure it out how to sound jazzy or just not straight rock.
This is a very cool guitar! I'd totally have one!
That inside is CLEAN. I've seen way worse in guitars that aren't cheap.
I reaaaaaally want to see if youd look at an Epiphone Wilshire Phant-O-Matic! I have one, I'd love to see what you think of it!
Reminds me of the Epi masterbilt series. Cool stuff. I had an archtop from that line that was hard as hell to play but looked really nice.
Well, pleasantly surprised w how that thing sounds.
Those distorted tones! 😮🤘
I had a 1951 Epi ZDR and this looks to be a reasonably accurate job. Mine had a Frequensator (stairstep) tailpiece and a more interesting woodgrain overall. Electronics and playability 😢 are natch way better now - the old one was a bit of a handful. I like this one.
Later: I think the fingerboard inlays here are actually from the acoustic Triumph; my ZDR had mop blocks w abalone inserts. I may have a photo somewhere..
Thanks for not just playing jazz stuff!!! People either forget or just don't know that these kind of guitars were used in the birth of rock'n roll!
Awesome review!
I have an epic 295 with pops built in 2003 on korea that sounds great
There's a lot to like in that guitar, particularly the controllable feedback. Its looks don't fit my preferences, but its sound makes me want a full hollow body! Great review.
Very nice!
It has a lot of the same key elements as my 1948 Epiphone Kent😊
Maybe the longer wires are a result of the construction style? Presumably you fish the pickup tails out through the f-holes and solder them onto pots outside the body, then fish the pots/jack back inside 🤔 The shorter you cut the tails the less working room you leave yourself to solder outside the body. It could turn an already awkward job into a very awkward one.
Or it could just be Epi mass production saving milliseconds by not cutting the original tails down at all.
Intriguing though.
That is worth it. Gorgeous guitar.
I was really into this until you describe the neck profile.
I need something a bit chunkier, but I still might try and find one of these in person just to try it out.
Love the show
Damn! That things sounds way better than I thought it would with distortion. I dig that guitar.
That thing reminds me of the Gretsch that the guitarist plays in Depeche Mode. I love it. I'd like to get it in that seafoam green like he has.
The fingerboard looks very similar to my Masterbilt acoustic my binding is three ply (from memory)
Im not into big hollow guitars, but them pups sound amazing with gain. Wonder if they would sound that good on something a bit more solid?
I don’t have a lot of cash but I’ve traded out brand new Epi’s, limited editions etc until I got THE ONE of each model that was made with inspiration and they really do feel and sound great. I was able to collect 32 of them over the years and even when I meet people with the exact same model mine are a bit different. I think they get a little bit of space to make them nicer from time to time. I have 3 that shipped from Nashville! Sweetwater must have marked me as a really good customer because I got a lot of upgrades. I love my Epi’s and so do my Gibson owning friends!
Very nice looking guitar, be proud to own that one!
The person that went through your new guitar day program. has pretty good taste in guitars. with this obscure model of Epiphone. I knew you couldn't get though the playing demo. without playing some Ted Nugent. it's not a birdland but it does okay.
That’s a really good-sounding guitar! I’d like to have heard more on the two-pickup setting with a clean tone-I think it would make a great rockabilly and old-style country guitar.
The tree of life and the inlays are amazing. Great looking pick ups. I really like that it's a fat semi hollow.
Salutations Austin!
Nice Epiphone Zephyr Deluxe Regent!
It is similar in some ways to the Joe Pass Signature Epiphone Emperor II, except for some minor details, such as different knobs, Classic ‘57 pickups, and coil splitting capabilities, and a flame maple back, the neck is slightly different and the Joe Pass has a set of Grover tuning machines also.
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
Maybe do some more high end Epiphone guitars reviews.
The neck and head is made the same as the Epiphone Excellente acoustic. The Excellente has a big three peace cloud on it instead of the tree.
Breaking into a little Stranglehold…! The distortion sounds great.
Nice to see Epiphone becoming a major player again !!!
Those pickups are pretty awesome.
Seconding that! I have 1944 Epi Broadway that had a pickguard-mounted floating pickup added in its distant past (which has the best playing neck of *any* of my vintage archtops, though nothing in my collection matches the 1953 Gibson L-7 acoustically (also sporting an aftermarket floating pickup), and a MIK 1995 Epi Emperor Regent with a single pickguard-attached floating pickup (my seller had replaced the original floater and pickguard with a Bartolini). I tend to prefer floating pickups for carved archtops, though with pressed solid tops, it's a little less of a priority, and with pressed laminate tops, even less. [The rules reverse for thinbody archtops and hollow-bodies, which are not really intended for anything but electrified play, where pressed laminate topa (and bodies) with routed pups have the advantage of improving the feedback reduction.
What really impressed me in Trogly's breakdown was how Epi handled the pickup setup on this beauty - in my view, anything that interferes less with soundboard acoustic vibration is preferable. In Trogly's demo, the acoustic performance seemed somewhat better than, say, a Sheraton, which is really quiet but not so quiet as trying to play a solid body acoustically - so this might well be a reasonable compromise that preserves more soundboard vibration than an inset pickup, but I really did not hear it, . I believe that the pre-Gibson Epi archtop lineup featured an 18-3/8 inch (lower bout) Emperor, followed by 17-3/8 inch De Luxe (which was he top line model before the Emperor appeared); and then the Broadway, Triumph, and Zephyr.
The nomenclature for modern Epiphone archtop models does not necessarily connote a hierarchy. Those looking for carved solid wood top, back, and sides archtops will these days might seek out vintage instruments, or find those handmade in small shops by expert luthiers.
Knock, knock, knock. Who is it? 🎶Cable management guy!🎶🎸👍
So, l’m definitely not a Gibson guy; probably due to the fact that I am a bass-player, l have always been more of a Fender & Guild loyalist. I have always liked some of the old pre-Gibson Epiphones, though (mostly because of John Lee Hooker). This is the only Gibson or Epiphone I have seen in many years that I actually like...
Good choice for a video, Trogly- very cool!!!
This guitar looks just like my epiphone masterbilt deluxe! Well minus the electrics and the cut out but the construction looks identical
That's a beautiful guitar! Wouldn't mind owning one. I've never owned a jazz box style guitar before but this one for the money would be a nice addition to anyones collection who is thinking about one. Congrats Jonathan on your new purchase!
The knobs and tuning keys are meant to look and be of the "art deco" design which was a big deal in its era.
Wow, that loves distortion! Thanks for the share John.
Wow gorgeous Epiphone 150 Zephyr DLX! Might have preferred the FB720 pups in this (like in the Epi Uptown Kat semi hollow) but these 'New York' sound ok distorted. This is $1860CAD in Canada if you can find one.
I have a 1951- has a soft-V neck profile with rolled edges. It is a really excellent guitar, maybe nicer than the Gibsons of the day.
The upper-level Epis are something to be reckoned with.
That’s a beautiful instrument! It sounds very country and western to my ear, like I would expect to see Hank Williams playing one.
Dear Trogly,
You often refer to the joint between the heel piece and the main piece on an economy-priced multi-piece neck as a scarf joint. This is not the correct use of the term. The joint normally used here would be either a splice joint or a simple butt joint. A scarf joint, by definition, is made with two complementary ramps. You correctly state that this is usually used to join headstocks to the main neck piece. The scarf joint offers more surface area for gluing than a simple butt or splice joint (the hypotenuse is always longer than the sides.) But it is usually incorrect to refer to the heel-to-neck joint as a scarf joint.
Best wishes.
I love the knobs! lol
Trogly, you always disparage satin or semi-gloss finishes which I absolutely adore. I can't stand overly shiny guitars. Every time you touch them they smudge all up.
The sustain is why Ted Nugent loves his L6!
The original Epiphone New York pickups were single coils, not humbuckers.
Very good to play the guitar ACOUSTICALLY. Some people demoing guitars like this, don’t do that. Thank you.
But…
This is blues, jazz type of guitar, that will likely be bought by players with that interest.
You don’t have to be Eric Clapton or Charlie Christian, but could you play some licks and patterns broadly representative of those genres in all pickup positions?
Please.
I tried one of these at my guitar center and thought it was pretty cool.
An hour after I watched this video,I went out and I bought the Epiphone Zephyr 125th
real good for psychobilly
Love this guitar tuners feel nice neck feels good. Weight feels good vc/ tone knobs are a little sharp
I’d be very interested to look at some honest sales numbers for these expensive Epiphones. I really can’t imagine paying those asking prices for some of the quality I’ve seen on these.
Jeez Mr Trogly that thing is huge !!
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Now that is one awesome sounding guitar!! That's a winner for sure.
Buy some Zots at Michael’s and stick the wires down without hurting anything.
truly the best epiphone on the show!
I'm very pleasantly surprised at how versatile this guitar is. Seems like it covers all the bases very well.
NGL, I'm kind of tempted...
Cool Jazz box thanks Jonathan 🤘🎸
I been trying for month to get you to look at the Epiphone Lee Malia Walnut Explorer Custom Artisan
Really nice guitar.
Dude, Did the pick guard come off with difficulty? Could it be that the pups are tightened down a hair out of alignment? Just a thought...
Sorry to those who do but epiphone gibson martin and true classical guitars you leave as is. Dont take it apart. As they're not intended to be unless its legitimate repair or general upkeep. They're a musical instrument that is equivalent to an extremely nice piece of furniture it'll treat you well as long as you take proper care of it. Like most archtops, not intended to be taken apart. Because if you strip something out or crack something tightening too tight. It'll cause serious wear. You have to treat an epiphone like this with the utmost care. Yes theyre Korean/Chinese made but its like going to a gourmet restaurant and asking for salt or ketchup/if modifying. Its an insult to the craft. And if you sell it drop the price significantly to accommodate the unnecessary disassembling. At the least 2-$300 no not an original epiphone but they're well built for consumer guitars. But one day they will end up asking about 2-4,000 dollars and as long as it was as minimally altered taken apart. It'd become an extremely nice vintage guitar in 20 years. Make a beautiful instrument worth spending that kind of money then. Because it'll be treated like the Japanese made elitist epiphones. Treat your guitars better than you would treat yourself.
Hey ,make wicka,wi"cka,wicka. Sounds!
Cool guitar! Classic style
I like it.
I wish you could do a guitar with painted on F Holes on your show if you haven't done one already. I would like to hear your thoughts on one.
I am guessing you have to like those pick-ups if you get it.
nice sounding axe. i like it!
I dig it , the tuners look like Sasquatch teeth ...Thanks Trogness !
sounds killer .. .
I wish shittyphone would do a geordie walker golden harp es295 signature or just a gold top es295. That would be cool.
John Lee Hooker played one 👍🏻
I have one of these and it’s a lot of fun to play. BTW, these are made in Indonesia.
I’m a lefty I saw one of those a real 57 18,000.00
The knobs look like Gushers
(American fruit snacks with juice in the middle for the people who don't know wtf that means 😆)
This one is special
I only play with 3rd wound!
too bad the New Yorker pickups only look right, they shouldn't be humbuckers :/
Having wired a hollow body I get why the wires are long
Love love love it❤
If you're interested in a legit '47 Zephyr with an interesting history (was clearly played lefty at one point, no longer has its pick guard) HMU, Trogly.
nice big ass guitar. congrats
2 pounds lighter than its brother the Broadway.
Don't loose individual parts and specs
Not my style but definitely a good looking guitar
Just me, but that's not a guitar meant for distortion kings.
