    My little brother had a cherry color 72 SGII with embossed humbuckers as his 1st real guitar at age 10 in 1975. My mom bought it for $100 from a friend of mine who owned it since new. The narrow nut width was perfect for his small hands. He asked me to remove the pickup covers but it was impossible! It sounded great and served him well for a couple of years. The bright sound is exactly as I remember. We discovered years later that his SGII with humbuckers was a special model from the old Chicago Guitar Gallery on Wabash, where it was purchased.

    6:49 The main reason most bridge height adjustment posts become mangled/damaged is from adjusting the height under string tension.
    In all cases the strings should be loosened before adjusting the bridge height (either raising or lowering).
    In most cases the bridge posts are made of plated brass (very soft material), the screw slots cut into the brass cannot withstand the extra forces required from full string tension.
    Do your future-self a favor and put some slack into the strings before adjusting the bridge height.

    That color is just....GREAT!! And that sound is textbook as to how an SG should sound. Right out of that early 1970s hard rock school of greatness. This SG, while you're playing it, demonstrates why SGs were such "go to" Gibsons!!

      He's not a collector/expert in 50s and 60s Gibsons, and this is what everybody's jerking to and 90% of Gibson/Epiphone catalogue, for the foreseeable future at least, will keep being about recreating 50s and 60s.

    Wow. I have the almost identical SG except it does not have the Embossed pickups and apparently M6 Schallers . Mine has Gibson on the Bigsby and is (as far as I know, is all original. I bought it used in the 80s and it has been with me since. Mine has ebony fretboard with the square mother of pearl. Gibson Schaller tuners, harmonica bridge with mostly ungnarled adjustment screws. It appears to be shaped the same as this one in your video (around the horns, same pick guard.).
    I enjoy your videos and I was surprised to see something so close to what I have. SN 2047XX. The yellow grain fill is why I have wondered if it was walnut.. 5 piece narrow neck.
    I enjoy your videos and I have learned a crazy amount. I watch most every evening. Thanks Trogly. Pete

    Sweet, gorgeous 72 SG with embossed Super tarbacks which sound amazing! Mid 70s SG is my favourite era of SG since I was a teenager, never owned one. I finally bought a used 2018 reissue of a 74 SG Special with 24 frets, small blocks and minis, it's my favourite guitar.

I just wish you would've played a few more things in the clean tones section but it's a fantastic guitar at the end of the day! As an SG fan with a few in my arsenal I'd love to try one of these since they have the skinnier necks and see how they play and feel. I'd keep this one if I were you Trogly!

    I know a guy who has something really similar. I think it's either a '73 or a '74 Cherry Red SG. Also routed in the back, small block inlays and a harmonica bridge. However, he doesn't have embossed pickup covers and a bigsby, just a regular silverish covers and a stoptail. Pots, pickguard and pretty much everything is the same.
    He's a guitarist of a really popular punk rock band from Zagreb, Croatia called "Hladno Pivo" (eng: Cold Beer). Their 1st album "Dzinovski" from 1992 is probably the most important album of the croatian punk subculture. When I played drums, I used to have rehersals in the same practice area as his band, and that's how I got to know him. As kids, we would always run back home and bring Cold Beer albums to all the band members to sign them :)

    That’s a really nice guitar and does sound good like you said. 5.21 K for the neck pickup to me is really weak but doesn’t sound bad in this video. In 1981-‘82 I had a 1972 walnut color that had the ugly top mounted plastic control plate and Les Paul style pickguard. It played real tight and really didn’t sound good tonally. The Duncan Invader’s set I put in only accentuated the bad sounding body. It had the embossed pickups before I changed them. Before that, I wasn’t aware there were those cosmetic changes that made people hate the SG’s for that year or so. Around 1976 or so I found a 1974 Standard in cherry finish. Like too many good instruments, I sold it a few years later. Nowadays I wouldn’t like the thinner neck. I have other SG’s now from the real early to mid 1960’s.

    The real reason they have the harmonica bridge is because they decreased the neck pitch . The standard tune-o--matic won't go low enough

    • @cuda426hemi
      @cuda426hemi 9 днів тому +2

      Ridiculous. They increased the neck pitch from 15º back to original 17º in '73. 14º headstock pitch from '65 to '73 sort of kills your argument since they ALL used tune-o-matics aka ABR-1s w/and w/o retainer wire until the harmonica joined the party for ONLY a cup of coffee on some Gibsons then back to ABR-1s and Nashville variant. 🎸

    • @cuda426hemi
      @cuda426hemi 9 днів тому

      @@styrenebuilds6851 True, me bad, I mis-took headstock for neck but my statement still is accurate regarding why string height action was not the factor in floating the wider throw harmonica bridge out for a year (especially w/Bigsbys messing up the geometry as well) or so since they never stopped using and ultimately settled on the ABR-1/Nashville TOM to this day TP-6 notwithstanding. 🎸

    I have a phenomenon where I have giant hands. with large palms and short stubby fingers. and this guitar has a neck that would be more comfortable for me. slim necks work better for me.
    you can see that Trilogy's fingers are slightly cramped on this neck. the Doors in the playing demo was AWESOME!!!! and he said I like it right after that. and I knew he couldn't get though the demo. without playing some AC/DC. yeah this is an SG that I definitely like.

  • @Jomomma1
    @Jomomma1 9 днів тому

    It was a short lived variation because the embossed covers made it twice the work to produce them. With the embossing being oriented two different ways, the covers had to be turned. Think of the time it took per pickup cover to do that compared to a pickup cover that was not embossed. Those minutes or seconds add up and eat away at profit over a year.
