  • In the historic Weimar Herder Church, Sir John Eliot Gardiner finds the perfect setting for his recording of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Against the backdrop of the dramatic altar and Lucas Granach paintings, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists perform Gardiner’s fresh interpretation of this classic piece. For the renowned conductor, this Weimar concert is a special performance, marking the start of his Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. With this concert, Gardiner shows himself once again to be an incontestable specialist of Bach’s music.

I grew up with Bach's Christmas Oratorio, as it was always on the roundtable of parents back in the sixties when i was a kid. It brings to me so many dear memories. I still have the vinyl. My other favourite Christmas music is Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

I wish Bach had lived to see how many people love his music and to know he is considered one of the greatest composers ever. Perhaps he does know: I imagine they sing his music in Heaven.

Not enough legato in the vocal line at some points for me, but one can't doubt the musica; abilities of the singers and the orchestra. That said, nothing I have yet heard beats the Thomaners with Georg Biller.

This interpretation is one of the worst of this wonderful work, barely parish grade and no "fresh" but terribly cold. Gardiner is one of those self promoting conductors that "get by through rubbishing their predecessors (notably Karl Richter, whose sublime Weihnachtsoratorium is a benchmark) in an effort to aid their own work rather than let the work speak for them". I believe in the authenticity of feelings not in fake hip. Last but not least, if you name your choir Monteverdi, at least teach the singers a decent Italian and Latin diction, without that horrible "aw aw" as in many recordings.

I cannot disagree with you more on your assessment of JEG and his forces. For more than 50 years now he and his ilk have been reinventing and reinvigorating Bach and many other composers, laying down some of the finest interpretations in concert and on record, ever. You come from a position of weakness mentioning Richter, as he, along with Klemperer, Karajan and others, belongs to a Romantic tradition in which loud, bombastic, stodgy, and overly sentimental interpretations, far from letting the works speak for themselves, make them suffer, and in which everything suffers, including Verdi and Wagner. Is JEG perfect? Certainly not. But his interpretations are almost always sensational. He’s like a brilliant chef working with the finest ingredients, especially the Monteverdi Choir, who are beyond reproach in technique, diction, ensemble, and above all, passion.
