I had the honor of playing lead clarinet with the Union Symphony Orchestra in 1977. My closest friend played second clarinet. I had to move a few short years later and, like life and distance too often does, it separated us and we eventually lost contact. I tried to contact him years later to resurrect our friendship. I learned that, tragically, he had passed away, a young man. I cannot hear this masterpiece work and the clarinet duet without being swept out to sea in tears.
This orchestra is so amazing. They lift the greatest composers’ works into the stratosphere. From Chopin to Mendelssohn, to Vivaldi, they stand apart in their passion and ability. BRAVISSIMO!
Anthony Storr (music and the mind page 79)notes that Contrary to Tovey's assertion, Mendelssohn was probably not in Fingals cave. For what it is worth...
I first heard this music as part of a Merrie Melodies cartoon when I was about 5 years old...have loved it ever since. Never knew what it was called until some years after that; I asked my Dad for the music and he bought me a 78 speed record with some of Mendelssohn's music on it. I played it on my Roy Rogers/Dale Evans record player. So many, many years ago. Good memories!♥.
This was a beautiful rendition of a beautiful piece. I’m not one to often cry these days in my life but there were tears streaming down my face half of the performance. The climax was wonderful.
I made a special trip to Staffa which inspired Mendelssohn to write this and when visiting, it's very easy to see why it did. The uninhabited chunk of rock rises dramatically from the sea with the basalt rock surrounding the mouth to Fingals cave which looks as though it's man-made rather than a natural geological fault. Approaching the lsland to land is an incredible skill itself and I watched in admiration at the way the young skipper handled the boat, timing his move to go forward on the "right" wave, then reversing the engines to "brake" just at the right point. I'd heard the overture many many times before i'd actually visited Staffa.....but it was a truly memorable trip which brought the music alive. It really is a very wild place.
Wonderful performance by the LSO, beautiful cello sound and basses suave and incisive (probably from bowing overhand), and excellent wind phrasing with the horns. Varied and beautiful sound. John Eliot Gardiner really understands and conveys this music with the orchestra.
I agree with you. This was an excellent rendition. I heard parts I had never heard before! It sounded very accurate but still created excitement at the appropriate points. Initially, I put it on in the background but had to stop, switch to headphones and restart it giving it my full attention.
What??? The principal bass and at least one other are using underhand, German grip @ 6:00 (Principal is not visible in that shot though) Also, now grip has virtually no affect on playing at that level, at least they should be passed the point of being limited by bow grip.
Ich war noch nie auf den Hybriden, aber ich sehe wie das Wasser an die schroffen Felswände klatscht, sich zurückzieht und neuen Anlauf nimmt. Grandios gespielt.!!!
There is only one way to hear this music - on the ferry from Ullapool to Stornaway on a windy and rainy day, with your noise reduction headphones on at full blast especially during the storm sequence. It reduced me to tears.
BBC Radio 3 brought me here. Funny story coz caught this brilliant piece, listening to the radio, randomly. I was amused instantly and starting to discover who composed that. I rejected Beethoven (music was too soft and gently), than after considering Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn, I've cancelled first two and stayed at last one. After short investigation on net has been confirmed, I was right, I felt the style and magic orchestration of Mendelssohn. It's shocking for me that me, ignorant never been educated in the cosmos of music, I could recognize composer.
Does anybody remember the the imperturbable myna bird who would hop in rhythm to The Hebrides symphony on a handful of the old 50s Inky cartoons? The music was mesmerizing and the melody stuck with me all these years. Serendipitously, I realized the music from the cartoon was Mendelssohn. Please, do a UA-cam search for the cartoon. #Inky cartoon, magic myna bird. I promise, it will be worth your time.
I would pick 4.08 as "the moment." Those war-cries between the woodwinds send shivers down the spine. And what interesting trumpet parts! (still with no valves!)
Been going to Scotland for past few decades for holiday. Lovely country. Just came back from loch ness and isle of Skye and once I was there played this piece a few times and it really complimented the surrounding and the scenery. Absolutely great
An amazing music . The best performance I ever heard . This music was played when people were taken to gas chambers during the Second World War . Maestro Sir Gardiner and orchestra are excellent . This music is unbelievable . Spasibo . Danke .
Ada Lyubarksy I don't know if you are related to someone who went to gas chambers or know by word of mouth of those who went to the gas chambers while this music was being played...it gave me a moment of sobering, serious pause.
Exceptional editing. Thank you. Too many times the image changes in order just to change the image. The video seems like a collaboration of shots assembled by an AV tech school intern. Every shot here is deliberate, intentional and represents each stanza with the appropriate section of orchestra.
This ranks with the same composer's Midsummer Night's Dream overture among the top dozen short (8-12 mins.) pieces ever composed. Not a note is wasted, not a bar superfluous.

Came here because I read that Wagner claimed that this was the only good composition my Mendelssohn. I have yet to listen. Well, here goes . . . everything . . .
Hi Harold, this depends on the conductor's preference, and this often changes depending on which piece they're conducting - for example their might be some important details he or she feels can be better highlighted with the seconds in a different position. The second violins can be placed opposite the first violins or next to them. Sometimes the other string sections may be moved around too, but usually it's the first violins who stay still in their position on the left of the conductor.

Hope you are ok. I’m playing second clarinet as well in my college’s symphony orchestra and I really love this masterpiece.

Oh the swells of the sea, the storm, those beautiful clarinets. Exquisite
This orchestra is so amazing. They lift the greatest composers’ works into the stratosphere. From Chopin to Mendelssohn, to Vivaldi, they stand apart in their passion and ability. BRAVISSIMO!
This is not only beautifully played but beautifully filmed. The youth of the musicians gives one hope for the future.
What do you mean? The musicians are on average not young here.
@@DellDreamer What do you mean? They all seem to be under 70 years of age.
@Frau_aus_Seide Maybe you should read my comment again.
@Frau_aus_Seide It is of no consequence to me that you are clueless. No need to continue with this pointless back and forth.
I`ll never stop loving this piece,EVER
It is a personal favorite of mine. I really like the performance conducted by Claudio Abbado too

We were exposed to a lot of classical music during the heyday of cartoons and didn't even know it.
This was a beautiful rendition of a beautiful piece.

OMG what music! and what a conductor. incredible.
you can tell that the composer is purely enjoying the beautiful masterpiece.

How lovely of you to share this experience.
Thank you for this. He visited man made masterpieces too on his trip here.
Thank you for making your special trip to inspire poor Mendelssohn, I'm sure he needed your encouragement. You should inspire more musicians! Bravo!
Same here! Beautiful spot. ❤
It really is inspiring to watch/listen to incredibly talented people play such amazing music... I am genuinely in awe of every member of LSO. Amazing
Wonderful, thanks Mendelssohn for lifting me up from the crap that`s going in this world.

In my opinion, That's the sound of The wave gradually flap the isle of Staffa

I'm convinced John Eliot Gardiner is one of the finest conductors ever
Daniel Fuller a very diverse one as well. Does anything from Monteverdi to Brahms
@squidpanda23 Not a huge fan of Karajan to be honest, or old school conductors in general; I prefer my interpretations with at least a sprinkle of HIP
The layers of musicality and crashes of stiff waves on the rocks, here. Unparalleled. Or so it feels.

One of the best Overture in Mendelssohn composition, so far what's yours?🤔
Beautiful music, I can even dance the waltz with the music, I just need my partner
A tried & true "warhorse" of the classical canon...,but this orchestra injects some vitality into their performance!
Simply divine.

I'd give 100% credit to Mendelssohn and 0% to 'god'. Anything less is to detract from Mendelssohn's genius.

At 6:31 it sounds like the begginning of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkiries."
Does anyone feel that the Barbican has almost deadpan reverberance? Certainly takes away some enjoyment of this incredible music
Mendelssohn turned out to not be another Mozart as some thought early on..he was just Mendelssohn which works like this demonstrate was good enough.

Okay but like the violas were barely shown in the video 😔
I was think how nice it was to get to see all the sections but I think you're right. Poor violas, always mistreated.
Does the set-up ever change, or do the Second Violins always stay on the right?
Hi Harold, this depends on the conductor's preference, and this often changes depending on which piece they're conducting - for example their might be some important details he or she feels can be better highlighted with the seconds in a different position. Makes for great stereo sometimes. Some pieces use 1st and 2nd violins in a kind of “conversation “ and this sounds great over headphones for example.
