    Jet boil may be more efficient time wise but feeding sticks into a natural wood fire soothes my soul. Good one brother.

      You got that right! Some of the Kelly Kettle folks thought I was slanted to the JetBoil. I hope not. I tried to let them know that I enjoy sitting, making a fire, and soaking up the atmosphere. I appreciate Chief!

    As long as you’re counting time with you have to run back to a store where you can get another fuel canister, then I think it’s a better comparison LOL great vid with nice split screen. I think it boils down to whether or not you want to have your fuel with you or have an unlimited fuel resource they both have pros and cons.

      Thank you. That tends to be the predominant question posed by KK fans. KK still needs a fire starter & wet materials are a problem. I appreciate it!

    A good comparison. For me it is the Kelly Kettle. My reasoning is, I may run out of gas with a Jet Boil when out and about, but I will never run out of things to burn to fuel a Kelly Kettle.

      Thanks Mark and solid thinking. I rather enjoy the fire making process and typically have the time tend the fire (not that it takes that much, LOL). They both have their place. I appreciate the feedback Mark and am glad you know what works best for you. I hope to hear from you again. Take care!

    The beauty of the Kelly kettle is that you do not need other fuel... That's the beauty of it.

    Jet boil has no soul. Thank you for the review, Jonny. Stay safe and stay warm. And you can toast marshmallows on the Kelly while you are waiting for it to boil.

    Alternatively you need to make sure you have the fuel canister with the Jetboil… with the KK it can be used anywhere anytime with any kind of fuel you can find…natural or otherwise. I’ve boiled water in my KK in 3 minutes… I’ve never had a problem lighting it… I can’t say I’d want to lug it around for long but for short hikes and car camping it’s my go to

    • @ExpeditionaryJonny
      @ExpeditionaryJonny  2 роки тому

      Thank you and I'm glad to hear that you love your KK. I have no preference between the 2 stoves, and I find your comment rather interesting. You readily admit that you wouldn't lug around the KK for long hikes and also commented about the fuel canister. I'm curious if you've checked out the Jetboil. The canister fits nicely inside the Jetboil and will last about a week while on a section hike, and the stove is smaller than the KK. The thing about backpacking is that you have to also deal with the elements. I just came back from a 3 day camping trip and it rained the entire time. I brought the KK to show my friends, but we opted for the canister stoves because dry wood was pretty scarce. Each piece has its own place and each of us have to find what works best for us. I appreciate you for visiting and giving me a chance.

    Nice review or comparison. I’ve just purchased a Kelly kettle to replace a large propane camp stove setup (rather than a Jet boil) at our allotment, as the propane refills are a pain to get and are getting quite expensive, especially as wood fuel is pretty ubiquitous. Then again it’s horses for courses, I don’t do that much trekking and if I’m using it when I’m out and about, gathering wood is part of the experience for me.

    Good comparison.
    Just want to mention that with Kelly Kettle you can use it for years as long as you have something for burning, with JetBoil you can't survive for many days.
    That's the point of the Kelly Kettle, to be able to survive for a long time.

      @ExpeditionaryJonny  Рік тому +1

      Good morning and thanks for tuning in. Yeah, I hear that a lot about the KK. Choosing the right tool really depends a lot on the individual and the type of adventure they are getting into for that particular situation.
      As for survivability with the KK, I see that you've already watched the other video. I'm actually revisiting the KK right now regarding the survival aspect. Hopefully, I'll be able to demonstrate some strong points and will also be able to put things in context. I appreciate it!

    I feel both are great car camping stoves. For thru hike pocket rocket 3 oz stoves is commonly use on all 3 of the major trails. Not necessarily that brand but that style. But each to their own right? Personally I used a stove from Ron and Bruce for car camping trips and pocket rocket for bike camping. I used 3.5 oz stove in Amaicola Falls State Park in Georgia. Down side to canister fuel is altitude. They higher you are the more fuel you will use to boil water. Not uncommon for AT thru hikers to send stoves home and go with cold soaking and burrito wrap meals or peanut butter mix meals.

      I'm with you Joe (except I don't have anything from Ron & Bruce yet). I enjoy the convenience of a small canister stove, and prefer the FireBox stove as my twig burner. 100% agree about everyone having their own ways. I appreciate you!

    Nice comparison. I’m not sure I’d take either with me on a long hike but like you said for camp outs or car camping either one would be good. Nice thing about the Kelly kettle is that as long as there’s tree branches and a way to start it,it’ll go a lot longer. Propane fuel will run out eventually. But for a quick boil the it’s gas all the way. 👍👍

    Great demo! I don't have that Kelly kettle but I do have the knock off brand of the Jetboil it's called Firemaple but is identical at 1/3 of the price but it has its purpose...im alot like you I love the whole process breaking down fire wood and making about the adventure! And if like you said on a fixed schedule efficiency goes to gas powered...we have the generator for when the power goes out...but if it's first thi g in the morning and I haven't had my coffee am I gonna wait and light the fire to get the energy to run cords and get power going...no I'm pulling that butain Firemaple get getting one done quickly! They all have their place like you and I have said! Totally stoked about the new style format on this video Mr.Jonny getting fancy on me! Lol have to show me how you do that! I'd like to learn also how to do a live and split screen stuff and learn how to do that one day if your into learning that with me also? But yes yes yes most excellent video my friend! Would one fuel canister be suffice for 3 15 minute burns per day for a long 3 or 4 day camping trip?

    • @ExpeditionaryJonny
      @ExpeditionaryJonny  3 роки тому

      Good question, and I'm not sure. It really depends on the size of the canister and what you are using it for. My burns with a canister stove are MUCH shorter than 15 minutes since it only takes a few minutes to boil water. Personally, I rarely use either of these stoves because they are too big and too limited. My approach is to cold soak my food and then heat it up over low heat to finish. I hope that helps.

    I suppose for "fairness" you should add in the time it takes to drive to a store and buy a replacement gas cannister divided by the number of 2 cup boils you get from a cannister.
    Or even order a cannister online and add the delivery time.

    I have the Kelly Scout aluminum model. It seems to boil more water (and faster) than the Trekker in your video. I have an aluminum Trekker and a stainless Base Camp on order. I have built dozens of hobo stoves from various sized cans, and can say with authority that a large burn chamber allows for more fuel and air, making a hotter fire. I recently took my Scout on a four day hike on the Appalachian Trail, and it boiled 40 oz. of water in about 8 minutes from startup with dry twigs, longer with damp ones. Once a good fire is going in the base, damp twigs dry out and catch fire quickly. I carry a cat food can full of holes as an alcohol stove with a titanium foil windscreen on every trip, the two items weighing less than an ounce. With one ounce of denatured alcohol, I can boil 2 cups of water in less than 6 minutes, and a splash of alcohol gets twigs burning in a hurry in the Scout.
    I would like to be able to carry the Trekker in the side pocket of my pack. The Scout takes up way too much room in my pack. I can get all the gear that I used for 275 miles on the AT, plus the Scout into my ULA CDT pack, but just barely. I don't like to over-compress my insulated gear.

      Hi Daniel. Thank you for sharing your experience. Yeah, the salesman that I bought my Trekker from had better luck with the larger models & I bought mine as a favor to him. I get what you are saying. I've made several DIY stoves over the years & settled on something that takes up far less room than KK. As you touched on it, size & weight are a huge consideration for any hike. Good luck with you choice & I'd love to hear how you experience goes.

    The kelly ketle will help your early fire. No reason to get it fully burning because you're just wasting time.Get a small flame going, put the kettle on (which will increase the small fire due to the updraft because it's baically a rocket stove, then start dropping sticks in from the top. You'll cut off a good chunk of time and save some wood

    The whole set up & test was absolute nonsense. The Jetboil takes a few seconds to attache the gas and between 2 & 3 mins to boil, your water would be boiled before you have even sourced your fuel for the kelly Kettle ! As for the people on here saying you could run out of gas, how many months are they camping for ? " or 3 large JB canisters will last for ages and still be less bulky and heavy than the Kelly Kettle.

    • @ExpeditionaryJonny
      @ExpeditionaryJonny  Рік тому

      Hey Chris. While I disagree about this being nonsense, I'm not going to say you are wrong on the other points. As I recall, I didn't open the valve on the JB all the way, and it still was faster than KK. KK fans don't like starting the clock until they place the kettle in place, so I thought this was pretty fair. I really appreciate you swinging by and providing feedback. It really helps me make better videos in the future. Cheers!

  • @CharlesLe-thephotographer
    @CharlesLe-thephotographer Рік тому

    You’re wasting a lot of time trying to build a fire in the base instead of taking advantage of the rocket stove physics. Start with the kettle already on the base. Simple drop a fire starter down the kettle and then drop a few thin sticks down the chute. As soon as you see flames rise above the kettle start dropping thin to medium size sticks. You can even drop in thicker sticks when the kettle really gets going. Once the fire gets going there is no need to drop really thin sticks. The fire will ignite anything at that point. I’ve brought the large kettle full of water to a rolling boil in 3.5 minutes from the time I lit the fire starter (cotton ball and Vaseline) using this method. By building a fire in the base first you are blocking airflow instead of letting the properties of a rocket stove work for you. I do agree with you about starting the time from the time you start gathering sticks but this is hard to calculate depending on the environment you find yourself in this can vary. Usually it takes me a minute or two for that process. But the real advantage of the Kelly kettle is that the fuel is free and you won’t ever run out of fuel or carry fuel (except for your cotton balls).

    • @ExpeditionaryJonny
      @ExpeditionaryJonny  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching & the feedback. I've gotten feedback from lots of KK fans both agreeing and disagreeing with you. There is no consensus on the subject. The one truth is that you can boil water with very little resources. Thanks again for watching!

    • @CharlesLe-thephotographer
      @CharlesLe-thephotographer Рік тому

      @@ExpeditionaryJonny I’ve done it both ways and settled to this method because it’s the fastest and safest. You don’t have to struggle trying to get the kettle situated on a base that potentially has little sticks in the way like you did in your video.

  • @mgsiddle

    The is a false comparison as you have to spend an hour or more travelling and buying the gas cannister and if you run out of gas you are stuffed. You can find twigs everywhere and twigs are not only easy and free but a handful of twigs is enough to boil a kk full of water. If you want a fair comparison carry a small bundle of twigs with you as you have to carry a cannister if you use gas. You will collect the twigs a lot quicker than buying the gas!

    • @ExpeditionaryJonny
      @ExpeditionaryJonny  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching, especially since you are not a fan. This is a fair comparison because KK fans & salesmen make the same claims you just did about KK being superior to canister stoves. Your comments about carrying twigs amuse me because, as you say, you just need twigs. No need to carry what you can pick up. You've already seen my video addressing your suggestion to carrying twigs & the impracticality of using the KK in a survival situation. I recommend you watch my water video to learn more about SHTF situations at ua-cam.com/video/2Ob2e40JX6M/v-deo.html
