Appreciate your comment about the pot stand, however Kelly have redesigned the pot stand to also be able to set the kelly kettle about 3 inches above the ground to avoid scorching what it is standing on.
I have both the Trekker and the Base Camp. I take the Trekker as my main cooking kit when backpacking (in the Sierra's and other wilderness areas) because I found it easier than gas for the same reasons you stated, The Trekker with a hobo stove along with a large SS sierra cup and their small cookset ended up being more efficient than my MSR PocketRocket, when you include a cookset and 2 isobutane-propane fuel canisters (I've had fuel canisters fail/leak out - One is none.) Bio-matter is everywhere. I also take a Coke can rift stove as a second burner and backup. My Kelly Kettle Base camp is my car camping and SHTF stove. You can control the flame heat with fuel once you use it a few times, especially if you are an aware outdoor/backwoods chef. Even my heavy, cast iron 5 qt Lodge Dutch Oven is stable on the Kelly Kettle Base Camp using the hobo stove and there's no need for a big campfire requiring lots of wood. FYI: If you coat the inside chimney of the Kelly Kettle stove and the firebase and Palmolive dish soap before use, it cleans very easily. (That works for any SS cooking container)
The Kelly Kettle was my very first stove. I have the trekker version, which it appears that you have the same in this video. And folks need to NEVER NEVER NEVER use it without the water. I find that the greatest use of the Kelly Kettle is in the wintertime because the rocket stove is so darn fast and you get hot water very quickly.
A good demonstration, most get the lighting and fueling wrong, you were spot on. Your conclusions about the accessories and model size I also agree with.
I love that you have actually used the stove! Thank you for both the comparisons to other types of stoves and to other bio stoves. This was extremely informative and useful! Thanks again.
I am setting out on a full time van life journey in about a month and half. I came across this stove as an alternative to, as you said, constantly burning propane or alcohol for my morning coffee and meals. As I will be spending a good deal of my time in National Forests as well I really need something that is safe and easy to set up and break down, keeping the fire contained. Your video was incredibly helpful! Thank you doing this review, I think it will perfectly suit my needs on the road!
Fantastic review, thank-you! I also love the Kelly Kettle. I would add that one of the best, most significant advantages of the Kelly Kettle over any other stove including Solo Stove, Silver Fire, or any other biomass stoves is the Kelly Kettle is virtually weather proof. The fire is contained inside, so it is virtually unaffected by wind, or a bad rain storm making it ideal not just for hiking, but extreme environments like a windy beach, wind swept plains, or the deck of a ship in high winds, ocean spray and driving rains; the kettle will fire and boil just the same. JJ-
I don't know about the ship deck option. Usually high winds are accompanied by heavy seas. Even if the fire isn't easily put out having the whole works thrown about or knocked over the side is unacceptable.
I have used the Treker 20 oz for the last 3 years and have loved every moment. Tip: Once the kettle is going, I pour the first water into my Mountain house and put another 20 oz. back in the kettle and put it back on the firebox. I stir the meal and close it and with in 1 minute of putting the cold water in. You have another 20 oz's ready to go. I made 9 Mountain house meals in the time a burner stove heated 32 oz's. On Catalina we used palm leaves that have a more oil content to them and more smoke. High Sierra's pine cones and pine needles.
I have the same kettle except my cork is made of cork. They have been around for decades. Last time the power went out (6 times in one week) I tried it with a home made trangia type alcohol stove and bloody hell did that thing boil fast. The air inlet created a spiral vortex of accelerated alcohol burning much hotter than free air. A nice thing about this kettle is you can store it with your tinder and kindling inside all ready to light.
Excellent review. I own the medium sized Kettle. I thought, like you, that the top pot stand would be useless. But have come to enjoy it, in that I can get meats, such as bacon or burgers started while the water is starting to boil. Then switch it to the hobo stove to finish. But I do love my Kelly Kettle. Not for every trip, but a lot of them.
I bet with the pot stand you can boil even more water at the same time in your cup. Just my .02 Great review. I will get one for sure. Unbelievable how fast and efficient it is like a rocket stove...Thanks!!!!
Thanks Ben, have seen them in various videos from both yourself and others but never really understood how they work, this explains it perfectly. Very cool for sure thank you :)
I enjoy your video, I watched it from start to finish. I have had the large Kelly Kettle for about 5 years and I love it. I will share your videos on my social media and channel. Great job! As I have been making videos I readily recognize a well done video. You now have one more subscriber. Can't wait to see what's next.
Great review & agree on the hobo stove, especially for the Trekker model. I use mine for motorcycle touring here in Australia in the cooler months. Thanks for sharing.
Great review! In addition to 3 sizes, you can also choose stainless steel or aluminum. I went with the base camp stainless model, it's usually going to be packed in a car kit or a large survival bag. This is a high quality, well designed piece of equipment which should give a lifetime of use, especially the stainless model.
Thanks for reviewing. I'm looking at these to keep in my vehicle but to also see how feasible they are for backpack camping. You covered everything I was looking for.
Good to carry in a fishing boat, pull ashore for a quick brew. It looks like it would be excellent for windy conditions. I loved the frog serenade in the background.
I have this stove in the trekker model. The bottom burn chamber is fine for wood, but put a alcohol stove in there instead of wood, and it is much faster to bring water to a boil. It is the fastest water boiler of all my stoves. I agree that the support cross member that you can use for a pot is best avoided. The hobo stove addition I have no experience with. Overall, very much worth it.
Kelly kettle Kount at 5 (as of today). We love them. Cotton picking relatives always want to "borrow". Planning on painting a ring of pink high temp stove paint on them, maybe the kettles will stay at home and not go wandering. Nice review. We do use the hobo stove, nice for c.i. dutch ovens.
I have used this many times, yes for car camping, no for backpacking, for the reasons stated.............works very well, and yes for the large kelly kettle..........
I have wanted one of these for More than 10 years. I just ordered 54oz one for $40 including shipping. I have a small bio-stove I use it with a pressure cooker and cook at home using wood pellets. I just like to know I can cook efficiently if we have power outages.
@@lhsgrobar Marie Maker yet to get confirmation from them in my email. Contact my cc they said I have to give it 72 hours. Usually I buy from anywhere instantly they send something to my email. I just put kelley kettle on the search and Marie Maker came up as a merchant.
Awesome review Ben! I don't think this would replace any of my backpacking stoves but definitely a contender for a car kit or a day pack for lunch/hot drink. Thanks for doing the review!
Thanks Ben. Wow... I still have my old Kelly from many years ago. I loved mine for local camping and such. I lost the old cork stopper for it... I'm going to see if the company has the new stoppers and chains available for purchase.... I knew there was a reason I've held onto that old thing!!! Can you give me the diameter of that grill plate? I'm looking for something to use as a grill on top of my Ikea hack wood stove (still my favorite)! It looks just about right. Thanks.
classic design, totally agree with your supporting arguments for using bio stove. spend many hours in state parks up here and agree, easier to use available resources for a quick meal. Thanks for the great video!
Great review. it is very fast, if not fastest, way to boil the water. Good part is you can cook at the same time and do not care the rain that much like in case of solo or other stoves. But yes, it's quite a big. On the other hand pot + stove it's similar size. For camping great, for hiking good. For light or ultralight hiking everything is big :) Good option. I wish it to be steel version with some improvements when it comes to plug and out od chimney. But all in all it's great stuff.
i use the ghillie kittle same thing but i use the 1.5L i agree not the best portable item but great for boiling water, cooking on. also a backup imcase it rains. you can cook everything on one of them
what if you just use it without the water in the kettle? does it keep its integrity or is theree a chance that by overheating the chsmber will deform? thanks.
Great review but you missed one of the BIGGEST benefits of the Kelly Kettle... you see hints of it in the other brands because it was the informal name of the Kelly Kettle.... THE STORM KETTLE. The thing is there is so much protection from wind and rain that once you have that fire lit you can boil water in gale-force winds, as strong and as wet a wind as you ever have to face. It's an Irish design and proven to work in howling winds and lashing rain such as Ireland gets a lot of.
Slamm'n. Enjoyed the video Ben. I'll be showing the medium size kettle on my channel soon. I feel the same way about the mugs. My don't best that well either. Take care Shane
I personally love my ghillie , just hate carrying it and not because of the weight but the bulk its big and bulky which makes it tough to fit in packs. I also have a backpacker model... very small but the same efficiency and speed.
Thanks Ben. I THOUGHT I recognized that Stove! For all the Naysayers and Commandos out there, since that Stove Design seems to have been made for over a Century and was used by the New Zealand Army in World War Two in the North African Campaign against Rommel, I think we can say it's "Good Kit". Just Google "Kelly Kettle wiki" for History and Details. You know, sometimes Viewers forget that you don't only do reviews of Gear that are good for Wilderness Recreation, but also of Tools that would be VERY useful to have for Dangerous Situations, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy for example. I'm definitely getting the biggest one for the Home. Maybe the Medium for the Car? Got to do some thinking about that. But like Tourniquets and a Pistol, that is a Serious Tool for a Serious Problem. Thanks again.
Excellent review! Cook and drink all in one! Good one for the base camp or car.
I think I am going to replace my biolite stove in my get home bag with this one because it is the container and stove all in one.
Cool deal i like the idea on the biolite there is a charging station but they are both excellent stoves.
Living Survival Ben, that is a good idea! Nothing like consolidation.
Ditto. Excellent, thoughtful and useful.

Very good point.
I don't know about the ship deck option. Usually high winds are accompanied by heavy seas. Even if the fire isn't easily put out having the whole works thrown about or knocked over the side is unacceptable.
One advantage of the pot stand is that you can use it to block rain from going down the middle.
Hey dude. That scraping sound at 5:30 is you putting teflon in your eggs. Use a plastic or bamboo utensil!

Well done the information was one of the best I’ve seen.
Very nice demonstration 1st time I have see on in use.
Hey man, I was just google-ing the Kelly Kettle to show someone and your video was the first one in the list! Major gratz bro!
Thanks Andy
8:04 It's a good thing that they nest snug like that. They stay together and make less noise.
I'm not sure but I think they were designed that way.
Very good review. I totally agree that a wood burning stove is much better for cooking than an open fire.Thank you very much
I have the large kit and I love it because this can also be used in a emergency situation or just camping
Excellent video. Thank you!

It's a great piece of kit.
Nicely done. One of the better reviews on the trekker.
Great video! I recently got the Trekker model & look forward to using it this season.
Good to carry in a fishing boat, pull ashore for a quick brew.
It looks like it would be excellent for windy conditions.
I loved the frog serenade in the background.
wind definitely doesn't bother it.
Excellent comprehensive and useful review. Thank you.
really enjoyed your video of the Kelly pot thank you for all rthe information have a great day

I love my kelly kettle!
Very good. Thank you very much
OMGOODNESS I NEED TO BUY THIS....AWESOME VIDEO!!!!
Awesome. I learned something today. Thanks.
Very cool video I like the fact you used cotton balls (and Vaseline?)to start your fire
I have used this many times, yes for car camping, no for backpacking, for the reasons stated.............works very well, and yes for the large kelly kettle..........
The large one would be great for car camping, like the pot stand that you can get for it

pretty much my thoughts too. except i've been using it now a bunch because its just cool.
Buying one for my camping trips. Boiling washing up and tea water while cooking my eggs 👍👍👍

Thanks for the review, the first I've seen on this product. Good to know the great other options out there.
The Ghillie stove is a great alternative. Both stoves are excellent.
Great review and thanks eh from your Canadian subs 🇨🇦👍
Very good Ben.
Another advantage of the Kelly Kettle is the "Cool" factor! Those things are indeed cool!
definitely. i was going to even say that I just like using it because there is something about it. cool for sure.

Great kettle/stove!
Yeah, I wish I had gotten the medium 41 oz. model. And the medium is larger diameter but shorter, which I think would be okay.
Thanks Ben! I've been waiting for a good review on this. Wasn't really sure how it all worked
no problem.
Pretty cool setup

That thing is pretty cool
looks like it might be a great addition to my camping gear. I would suggest you might fry some bacon before the eggs to keep things from sticking.
what if you just use it without the water in the kettle? does it keep its integrity or is theree a chance that by overheating the chsmber will deform?
thanks.
absolutely not without water, that will ruin the kettle for you, the water in the kettle keeps the fire from damaging the kettle.
Awesome thank you 👍🤙🇺🇸

What is the boil time for that size? You may have answered this in the video but I watched it without sound at work
He said 3-4 min.
The Irish have competitions. With the right “fuel” prepared, 1l can cook in under one minute! 🙀
UA-cam has a video how.
Interesting piece of gear
Good review, lots of information. Thank you.

me neither, love it.
Was down to this or the Biolite Cookstove and I went with the Biolite
Great video..Looked at them, never bought one. Cool. .
kelly kettle is perfect, i have it, it's very fast and easy to use
If you use it without water will it warp or crack?
Great review, and great piece of kit.
how are your teflon pan holding up?
just fine.
