DOCSIS Explained - Do You Need a New Modem?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 гру 2015
- Docsis is the technology that allows you to connect to the internet over cable wires from your ISP. Different versions of this standard allow for different speeds, so how do you know if your modem is good enough? I explain DOCSIS and what it means for your internet speed.

2:50 QAM is a modality to use one channel multiple times, by sending signals in de-phasing orthogonal modalities, but at the receiving and seding end. This upgrade the speed for sending and receiving decoding.Great video man!
Finally someone who could explain how modems work and if I have to replace it in terms of speed when I’m upgrading my internet speed and my router! Thank you!!!!
isp's provided docsis 3.0 modem/switch/router combo unit with 200mbps plan getting 270mbps Down and 26mbps Up - upload speed is per plan but down speed is extra 70mbps
dude you are amazing! i had a docsis 2.0. and got a new docsis 3.0 now. with comcast i went from 35 mbps download speed to 80 mbps. youtube please send thio some money for this incredibly informative video.
Lol, I have 650 download here in the UK. Did comcast send you your router, or did you have to pay for your own?
@@jean-lucpicard5510 bro my comment is from 6 yrs ago. I dont even remember.
Thx Joe.... Another research time saving video...
Good edification made simple. Thanks for posting this.
so, if I have a Docsis 2.0 modem but my company give me the service using docsis 3.1 I can still use the service but at lower speed?
i got a new router wanna replace the old with it.
How if i just unplug all cable from the old one and plug into the one, is that okay? Tq
finally someone who can explain this! thanks
Crazy QAM, Learning Everyday. FACTS. !!
Thanks Joe!
Hey nice videos I was trying to get the new google wifi and arris modem do you think it's going to be a good combination??
You want the modem with the max amount of channels you can afford. Comcast in Portland uses 24 channels. In that case, you want to buy a modem with at least 24 down, 4 up even if you have the slowest speed. These extra channels add redundancy and load balancing during congestion/peak demand periods. All docsis 3.1 modems go up to 32 down and 8 up when in backwards compatibility mode. I would recommend a 3.1 modem to future proof.
Alucard Taylor I’m considering Comcast in Portland. I can still use an 8/4 channel, correct? I was told today I could by them. Is that not true?
I have a 3.1 modem (Fritzbox 6591) but it says "Connection type eurodocsis 3.0". Why it is not 3.1?
I own a Verizon Quantum Gateway. Can it be used as a modem/router with Optimum's input?
QAMs are either single 6 MHz slots dedicated to those DOCSIS channels you mentioned, or can contain anywhere from 3 HD to 10 SD cable channels. How many 6 MHz slots are available? Depends on your cableco....
Hi ThioJoeTech, thank you for making and posting this video. (I think I wasted $ purchasing a new modem [DOCSIS 3.0] to replace my Motorola Surfboard [DOCSIS 1.1, 2.0]). (I have a low price Internet Service, where down speeds don't exceed 21 Mbits, and it suits me just fine: I don't need a faster modem). With the orig Motorola, I was losing the ISP signal on and off, at random times, (variable lost service durations) over the past two weeks. ISP people told me to try a new modem (they thought it would solve the problem). (I mistakenly thought issue was due to a failing, older protocol modem). The new one has dropped Internet Service a couple of times already, in the past two days of ownership. (The upload/send speed drops from High speed/bonded channels to just 'connected', triggering an ISP interruption, for a few minutes). Just sharing. (Any/all thoughts appreciated). Thank you.
Your running 2 and The ISP says to put in Docsis 3 and then you seem to be using a lot more Gb per month. Whats up?
Hey Joe your camera/video looks extremely clear. What camera do you use? Also what internet speed do you use to support such nice quality? And do you have a 3.0 or 3.1 modem?
i am as of right now renting but am still not getting what i pay for and i just recently got his from my provider (Xfinity) and i am not getting what i am suppose to does anyone have any ideas this might be happening
I had this issue recently. I ordered a 3.0 modem a few months ago which had 4 channels. Last week, I got a letter in the mail from my cable company of a promo where I can upgrade to 150 Mbps for an extra $15 a month (total $50). I thought it was a great deal until I saw my speeds. I was only getting about 135-140 Mbps at the most and wondered why. I soon found out that my modem (Moto SB6121) couldn't support the higher speeds. I called back the cable company (Bright House) and asked to go back down to 75 Mbps for $35. They also told me that they are boosting everyone in my neighborhood to 100 Mbps for free (like you said) next month but since I went through a lot of trouble, they will let me get a head start.
What a coincidence you made this video.
That's a great offer. Where do you live? I have good internet but canada really gets fuck when it comes to prices.
aR0ttenBANANA96 a suburb of Detroit Michigan. Internet is really cheap here.
+Andrew Mackoul you lucky, i pay 100$ per month for 20Mbps
+Andrew Mackoul meanwhile in the philippines, we only have maximum of 2mbps....
QAM is where you have n levels of amplitude and n offsets of phase (a sine wave cycle starting at various angles). If you graph amplitude one axis, phase on the other, you will see qam 4096 will make n=sqrt(4096)=64, so you will have 64x64 dots. 64 levels (0-63) is 6 bits of resolution, so since there is amplitude and phase you get 12 bits per cycle. there may be exceptions like you can not measure the phase if the amplitude is 0.
Wow 👌so, internet data bits of traffic, flow better...? 🤓
I know that this is an old post, but does anyone have any idea how often they change the docsis. Thinking of buying a modem that I can use that a bit pricey, but if this stuff changes so much, I don't know if I want to pay for it. I have to put my gateway from the cable company into bridge mode. The gateway I have is ok, actually does very well, but the features are limited, and does not offer VPN, and the firewall is not so good.
Am I supposed to leave my cable modem on or shut off at night?
Hey ThioJoe, I do like the videos you upload in all of the ones I've viewed you have informed me enough to know what I'm dealing with. In this case though I need more info...where I'm located in Chicago the company( cable) here( COMCAST) is in competition with AT&T, and Direct TV for Internet and cable programing. The MODEM is a gateway actually, so that the company can take advantage of providing WiFi to its' customers as they travel. They provide access to your programming while commuting on WiFi enabled devices, and these gateways provide wireless access points you can tap into much like a cell tower for a cellular user. Nevertheless, is this DOCSIS device come as a wireless gateway or can a modem actually be a wireless gateway?
My cable only goes to my modem. Will this work?
3:41 Routers, too. For example, the WRT54GL can only support a max of about 55Mbps even when using a wired connection.
can u do a folder acessed by FTP?
Can a Verizon Quantum Gateway be used solely as a router?
where i live i can get 1gigabit/second
too expensive tho..
aw i wanted to use my old modem but 8 years ago i had an arris tm602g but its docsis 2.0 from 2008 and i have 50mbps twc internet
excellent explanation
I don’t want to update my modem but I’m forced to because it won’t work with my 3.0
what camera did you use.. the Quality is nice
Whoa. 1080p60fps. So HD. So vivid. So crisp and clear. The new camera is nice.
it looks amazing
+Brian Calderon You've yet to experience 4k60
sharks445 I can only imagine.
We can now watch his lip movements in glorious 60fps
I have an AT&T U-Verse módem that’s also a router and also connected to the TV. I bought a new router for gaming but don’t know what Modem I need to buy. Do I have to buy a super expensive one to support my Netgear Nighthawk? Or can I just buy a $20 modem and be good. Plz help
I'm sure you've figured it out over the past 8 months, but just in case not: AT&T U-Verse is setup in such a way that only allows AT&T equipment to work. You can't buy any DSL modem and have it work with U-Verse. You can always add your own third party router if you want, but you have to first setup IP passthrough (or DMZ+) in order for another router to work correctly.
Very informative.
I've currently got a Cisco DPC3010 modem and paying for charter's 60 down and 10 up service. Would I see any speed increase by switching to an Arris SB6190? Both are DOCSIS 3.0
If you are getting the speed you are paying for with the old modem, then no
No. Because both are D3 and support a *minimum* of 152Mbps. Just like the video said.
Man I just bought my new ASUS WiFi 6 router it’s amazing but sometimes the speeds significantly go down and lag due to my old Cox router so I’m looking forward to get a new modem
i have modem that combines all data that is phone internet and tv and i use VDSL
Would it matter if we just got the standard modem from the cable company, and paired it with a high-end router like the Netgear Nighthawk? Or would I have to buy an after market Modem to keep up with the router?
Internet performance is all about *bottlenecks*, and *everything* is a possible bottleneck. That starts with the tier you purchase from the cable company. After all, if you're paying for a 50Mbps tier, then there's no need to buy the latest, most expensive D3.1 modem. Likewise, if you're paying for 300/20 service, and have an SB6183 modem (which can easily handle those speeds), but have an archaic WRT54GL wifi router, then *that* is the bottleneck.
Thus, the ideal is to match the tier with the modem with the router with the Ethernet cables (Cat 5 supports 1Gbps just as well as Cat 6A, costs a *hell* of a lot less, and is easier to bend).
The fiscally prudent thing to do is to foresee what speed level you'll be getting in the next few years and buy kit which supports it *while remaining within your budget*.
So if i buy a... 16x4 modem, and my internet is only a measly 15mbps, will the modem then technically bump me up to 240? Or am I understanding this concept wrong?
Chee Thao no it's the maxium speed you can get
these speeds are for single user or for each user connected through same coaxial cable? if its for single user then how many maximum users can be connected through single coax cable. cable tv operator in my area offering 50mbps connection on docsis 3.0 so is docsis is better or fibre line (max offering in my area is 100mbps)?
Think of the water line coming in to your house. Or the electric line. Nothing about "number of users"; it's all about "maximum throughput".
I am getting gigabit not through fiber, so this would be DOCSIS but I need to know if mine will work with it without having to upgrade, I have DOCSIS 3.0 modem
You will need a docsis 3.1 modem for gigabit speed
Can I update my 3.0 modem to 3.1 without buying a new one? i saw the same model but in 3.1
You don’t. You buy a new one. What you want to do is not possible.
Phenomenal explanation. Thank you so much so much for your help!
Thanks for your info. I have the Motorola SB6120, which is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. I just upgraded from 25mbps to 75mbps. Comcast now tells me that my modem is obsolete. It doesn't make sense, since this modem can download about 160. They're asking me to purchase or lease another modem that will handle the 75mbps speed. What do you think?
_They're asking me to purchase or lease another modem_
From *them*?
_What do you think?_
They're trying to up-sell you.
Much usefull video
Thanks good video
I work for an ISP. I've had subs call in with a mdm with one channel for upstream and one channel for downstream.
WOW
I prefer your helpful videos over the ones you used to make for gullible people. Thanks for the explanation.
6 years latter GOOD VIDEO BRO
you explained this in such a simple way. thank you so much !
🐒
Thanks man
do they have ADSL in America or VDSL?
Both but more commonly A
you smart you loyal
nice meme
+SupeAsian we da best
+SupeAsian u SMOT u LOYL
+Dark W. Fuck no
I a-preshiate dat
Also, if you ducktape AA batteries all the way down your ethernet cables itll boost your speed depending on how many you use. It uses the electromagnetism to push the data faster. I hear that DOCSIS 3.1 uses really strong lithium batteries inside the modems.
Where is the "install docsis 3.1 on your WiiU" video.
I tried fitting a DOCSIS into my modem port, it did not fit, I figured out that you couldn't upgrade your DSL to DOCSIS
I have a DOCSIS 3.0 and the modem supports 24 channel downstream. (>900Mbps) Does this mean there are 24 TV channels reserved for the internet? What if I tune to these channels?
My WiFi box is right next to my pc, can't I just connect it to the back?
Yes. Ethernet connection is better
Upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 - The PIE traffic shaper is worth it, to reduce bufferbloat.
Wait. How come i get 100mbps down with a docsis 2.0 modem ?
You can not. Docsis 2 modems do not support multiple channel bonding.
can we put xbox360 games on laptop
liability is still an issue with cable here though so no matter how fast if no connection then no speed at all ... knowing you said DOCSIS 3.1 is able of 10,00Mbps up and 1,000 down it makes more sense though
btw it is basically done through a way of uses amps and volt instead of only volts to make it go that fast thus breaking some of the older modems but in sort they send more in shorter bursts at the same time in teh literal sense for DOCSIS 3.1 from how i understand how it works anyways .... fiber channels still beat it at 1GBps each channel with 3 to 6 channels per cable so much faster but not many ppl need to push Gigabytes of data now so fiber channel internet is kinda not used that much also no cable fiber is different from fiber internet as it invovles in short getting your ISP a fiber wire WAN type switch or router then your self modem and router for fiber that can also hook up into your own computer(s) so um way faster than you can use for a while thus why it exists but isn't used as if it was we would find a way to saturate it but as it isn't we don't have one yet
1GBps = 8Gbps so um alot more speed ... but cost is to high for anyone to pay to put it in is the thing :( as once it is in it is relativity cheap compared to DSL and cable
Thank you man someone who speaks English finally great info vid and explanation. Very helpful 👏
my DOCSIS 3.0 Modem has 8 Channels, should be plenty for 54 / 2.7 MByte/s
at my old house we had to have that in the attic cause thats where it was
a thing to not is DOCSIS 3.0 modems can support 3.1
Meanwhile using shitty ADSL and have no cable available in my area
IKR...
***** The current government has banned the expansion of fiber and HFC networks so everyone is stuck with shitty ADSL until 2020
+I have a long user name on youtube that is 100% pointless because i dont want to use my full name WTF kind of governments is this??
Ibraheem Al hadede The Government of Australia , until recently we had a leader who thought that the internet was a series of tubes. The government before wanted to build their own wholesale fiber network so they banned private companies from beating them to it
I have a long user name on youtube that is 100% pointless because i dont want to use my full name That's cute.
60fps such smooths
Pff... We had cable internet here over 10 years ago... In the last few years fiber 1Gbps has been adopted really good.
ya here's a update the recent release is docsis 3.1
Hey it’s Superbad.
I am literally in love with you Mr Joe
