So many kids think these modern buzzwords are new, then I listen to old media and realise they're just recycled from their grandparents and they don't even know it.
I remember this episode. It included a very funny parody of John and Yoko, and McDowell played John to perfection. Of course this was before John was murdered, which happened months later. The following summer when the episode was re-run, the John and Yoko sketch was deleted.
A fun-ish fact; McDowell felt guilty about making fun of John Lennon so soon before his death, but later he learned that John and Yoko had watched the episode live, and they absolutely loved it and thought he was hilarious.
I thought it was a bad impression and a terribly unfunny sketch. I'm not biased being a Beatles fan. I love impressions and I love Dowell but that one didn't work for me. Glad John liked it at least.
There will never be another actor like Malcolm McDowell who could tremble you and make you fear for your life like the puny mortal you were. Are his characters truly mortal? Or is it just that no one can prove it?
in every example ive ever come across of mcdowell speaking as himself he comes across as a highly intelligent bloody great bloke damn fine chap, and hes a truly great actor with an awesome speaking voice and special charisma, just like michael caine- simply impossible not to like.
In his personal life, he was awful, a cheater, womanizer and deadbeat dad. Pretty unlikeable. Must've been a narcissist, to charm women and audiences, while being an overall letdown.
According to Wikipedia, SNL veterans rank this as one of (if not the) worst nights in the show's history. Malcolm McDowell's monologue, on the other hand, was actually one of the more interesting ones from Season 6.
He was only 37 here, about to become a father for the first time. The thing is, he had already been married for 5 years when he impregnated someone else. At 25, he met a 34 year old divorcee and married her 6 years later. Another three years into the marriage, when he was 34, he began an affair with a 25 year old woman whom he impregnated about a year later, about 7 months before this SNL appearance. Two months before this broadcast, he had divorced his first wife and married his second wife in the same month. Two months after this broadcast, his first child was born. They had a second child two years later and then got divorced 8 years later, 12 years after they had met. He got married right away, the year after his second divorce to a 24 year old when he was 48, and his kids were only 9 and 11. After another 10 years went by, he had three more children with his third wife, now in her 30s while he was nearly 60. Now he's 80 with teenagers born in the 2000s. A real piece of work, that's the track record of a narcissist and womanizer.
You may enjoy 'Time After Time' which was a sci fi Time Machine film where he had to chase Jack The Ripper into modern day San Francisco...It was excellent!
I never even knew he was on this show! I’m slowly making my way through the infamous season 6 and I was surprised to see him. He must have been promoting Time After Time?
Check out the other ones from season 6 - they typically had one joke at best. A lot of them didn't even sound scripted - the host (often rather weakly) would just mumble for a few moments before getting to "We'll be right back".
McDowell was a good host--it's just that he was saddled with a literal shit show here (3 of the skits--the Leather Weather Report, Commie Hunting Season, AND Jack the Stripper--are thought to be among the worst of season 6, of not THE worst). Can you blame him for NOT hosting again?

Working with Kubrick sent him grey.
Although there may have been drugs involved, it’s really not that bizarre to see greying in ones 30s.

For some reason Malcolm McDowell reminds me of both Eric Idle and Mark Hamill
