I just wanted to put this out there... I really appreciate women who become educated like this woman has and with this power can advocate for other women. I have internalized a lot of inferiority, that I don't matter, that any opinion or feeling I have is less because I'm an overly emotional woman. I hate that I feel this way because my rational brain knows it isn't true, I am no more or less than any other human. It was just so validating to hear her talk at the beginning about how women are half of the population and deserve to be educated about how their bodies work, and that menstruation should be taken seriously. I have fallen for this lady after one watch, love her immediately. I want to read her book.
Watching this post ovulation. I'm 29yrs old and my periods are getting more painful every month, last cycle was almost a traumatic experience, also my periods go on a 28 to 36 days cycle sometimes 40.. The more I learn about my period, the more aware I am about the changes my body endures month to month and I miss my early 20s when I felt nothing during menstruation and I was privileged that I wasn't feeling any pain. Now I want to tear my uterus off and I'm so afraid of my next menstruation because neither paracetamol nor ibuprofen helps anymore😢
I used to have an absurd amount of difficulty coming to terms with the fact that I personally don't have periods and that the other half of the population has to deal with them while I don't. It felt like life was going way too easy on me. What I realise now is that the only way to combat this is to actually help those who struggle through it. Be there for them, offer support, get them pads or whatever they need if they ask for them. It will make things a little easier for yourself and for others.
I like menstruating, but it changes my mood so much during PMS. The last 6 years I've had experiences that led me into depression, but my life was hell for 2 of the 4 weeks of a month. In the PMS week, everything I felt was just too much, the sadness, the rage, the loneliness, the shame, my thoughts used to be so self-deprecating, I could lay in bed for hours. I had a Copper IUD, hence the pain hit HARD the following week. This year, I changed to Mirena IUD, so I don't menstruate anymore and everything is better, my relationships are better, my emotions are felt and gone, I'm in control, I feel like living again ^^ I still have self-deprecating thoughts (which are an habit I'm trying to break) and feel cramps, but nothing compares, I used to throw up because of the nausea caused by pain. Thank you for sharing this video!
Great video! Could you also do another video with Dr. Gunter talking about the effects of different hormonal birth controls and other types of birth control? Would be very insightful!
I thought it might be a good idea, with the best of intentions, to watch this video; in part, because I'm a man I must say that it was a good decision. I learned a lot, and developed a deeper appreciation for what half of my species goes through because they are the ones to carry a fetus. I'm sure that being pregnant, carrying a child, and bringing it into the world are wondrous experiences, but thank you very much as I'm quite happy with my role in that process. More than happy to run to Wawa at 11pm for the B&J icecream of your choice.
@@khoadangbui9451 I’m glad! I grew up in a world where Kotex advertising was just starting on TV. If it came on when my brother was in the room he would just be disgusted. He wasn’t a bad person but conditioned by society to feel this way. His discomfort was more important than mine. Having to purchase feminine hygiene products was an exercise in embarrassment. As a young girl I was offended to realize that one half of the world was disgusted by a natural process the other half experienced. My husband may have been the same as a young person but was wonderful with me, kind and supportive and would even venture out to purchase the necessities of needed without batting an eye. I came to feel that most men needed to just suck it up and I no longer tried to hide what I was going through - admitting I had cramps at work for instance. By the time menopause (which wasn’t even touched on here) came along with its myriad of changes the men in my world went through it with me. Hot flashes be damned! The thing is, I actually felt my most feminine and powerful during these times. The fact that you are here is so encouraging - especially with the backward mindset of a lot of American politics towards women. What would be the best policy is to teach men to respect, and supporting their women as they go through these processes and get over themselves.
I would like to share my period experience that is supported by ONE study mentioned on the NIH website... I have had low iron my whole life but am only now being treated for it at 40. I started getting my period late in high school and they've been debilitating for 20 years. I started taking iron sulfate supplements under doctor supervision. Recently I upped the dosage as I was still experiencing fatigue and other symptoms. Well it's been 90 days since the increase - and six months since I initially began taking the supplements - my periods are much different. I no longer have a heavy flow or sickening cramps or horrible pain when using the bathroom. I do get pre and post spotting, which is annoying. But I'd rather have the spotting than the absolute hell I was going through before. There are hardly any studies for this but my experience lines up exactly with the one study I was able to find.
I'm glad you've found it helpful, but my anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours. With what my doctor called both "excellent" & "worrying" iron levels, the former due to iron sulphate supplementation & the latter due to lack of it, my periods have remained unchanged (i.e. largely unproblematic, thankfully).
Here to educate myself and hopefully be a better partner, a better friend and a better future dad, weather it is helping my little princess or educating my little prince 😇
Great video! Should be shown at biology lessons cause I never think of that before - really in school we are learning about it only from pregnancy perspective, not woman's body and mind.
Was not aware there are those who blame themselves rather than the app for being "irregular". Worth adding this on apps as a disclaimer, that your body is not to blame for these changes (or at least that you don't need to guilt yourself over their occurrence).
Great great video very informative. As a woman I’m very lucky. Always regular , pain free periods. But one thing that hurts me watch some pseudo science gurus. Telling women they are suffering from reproductive problems because are listening their feminine energy!!! Blaming the Victim. Thank you for this vídeo
Nice and informative. 👍 I use App to track my menstrual cycle and it’s very close to accurate as I have 28 days cycle so maybe it goes 29 or hardly 30. But my periods are very painful during first two days then after it goes back to normal.
What? Syncing isn't real? My mind just got blown. After finding out about PMS, I'm so grateful to have only mild period pain. But the suicidal thoughts the week before my period are so real 💀I'm a ball of sunshine right when I get it though!
Sure but she doesn't actually say that. She says "Humans don't have pheromones, it's never been proven". If something hasn't been proven, you cannot say that it's true. Until there is robust evidence to prove that it exists, it remains untrue. It's how science works, you would not want scientists to say things exist when they don't know. The lightbulb example doesn't work in this situation. It's an invention, not something that happens in nature. Look if you want to believe pheromones exist, by all means, but there's no scientific basis to prove that it's true. Your evidence is probably anecdotal which doesn't fly when it comes to scientific studies. We're learning new things all the time, it's not set in stone forever. If you think you can prove it then by all means, do research to prove it and you can be the one to say you proved it to be true.
. Usually i had severe pain on the first day. Someone told me if your diet is really healthy you won’t get pain. Next month i had few dates daily and the next period i had no pain . Truly wish that there was this kind of info (and less myths) when I was growing up. Would have given me peace of mind and probably helped to deal better but the horrible pain. Hoping all PEOPLE menstruating get this and better info over time (yes, I said people! As a woman my femininity does not feel threatened by whatever way others identify themselves)
Your right to female-only spaces is threatened and these are crucial for females' well-being and safety. If you can't call police on creepy dude in woman's bathroom because he will call you transphobic and you may even loose your job for that, then you are in danger. Think about why those spaces were established in the first place. If you don't need female spaces then use gender neutral ones but don't make decision for all women, including little girls and those with traumas who don't want to change in front of people with male bodies.
This video is unfair to the Fertility Awareness Method. You’re not supposed to rely solely on an app, you have to study a little bit in order to understand your symptoms yourself. For me the FAM has done wonders, a natural method that helps you understand your own body and learn a lot about your health. The app failed to predict my period a few times and I knew it was wrong from the begining because I also chart my symptoms with pen and paper.
I track my menstrual cycle purely to know when it will come. Through it I found out that my cycles were very irregular. I could go up to 50 days sometimes and when I eventually got my period, I bled alot. Turns out I had a myoma which was 9 cm big. I got it surgically removed and ever since my periods have been very regular and far less bleeding. What I want to say with this is, people who have menstrual cycles, please take changed seriously. Take care of yourselves.
I lived with a woman for a few months and we never synced up the way woman say they do in shared working environments. I had a feeling that was based in myth
The menstrual cycle is so much more than monthly bleeding. Our cycle affects our health and daily activities in women. I had an irregular period for month affecting my health in many ways, turns out my brain was also impacting my period. Quite interesting that many organs have an influence on our period where there is not so much research about it.
7:16 NSAIDs taken orally never did anything to me (and I took 120mg in gelatine capsule form). But the intravenous administration of ibuprofen worked like a charm. The ER doctor said, the absorption rate is not high enough for oral versions to work. As prostaglandins are triggering the generation of more prostaglandins. So it can be halted only if all of them is neutralized by the NSAIDs at once (more or less). That said, I have primary menorrhagia (often bleeding through a super tampon in less than 40 minutes). So for normal bleeding/cramps oral meds should work....
Literally about to cry because I have always felt like I’m just a “breeder” since I was a child with health class and adults just reinforcing that idea. Every woman and young girl needs to watch this! I am so thankful this popped up on my fyp 😊
Lo, growing up in Germany, a "developed" country my sex ed in the year 2018 was still all about menstruation as connected to pregnancy, also I remember the thing that they mostly taught us was "DON'T HAVE SEX!" and if you do "DON'T GET PREGNANT!"
4:01 somebody make a mistake in the B roll and showed us how chocolate bunnies are made, while she's talking about possible miscarriages. 6:06, I think about rain showers when I think about severity of menstrual cramps also 😂
I wish my period didn’t make me more anxious and make everything in life seem like a bigger deal than it is 😣 But I’ve always at least had mild cramps.
As someone experiencing irregular periods for the first time in my life at 43, had some testing done and so far nothing abnormal found, put on a bunch of meds to try to regulate it. It's more than likely peri-menopause, and the last 2 months have been miserable.
"We are definitely seeing a shift toward viewing women solely as 'breeders' and that your life has less value than your role as basically carrying a pregnancy. I don't think we can sound enough alarms about that." Very well said.

Thank you for posting this video. This is very informative.
Big fan of Dr. Jen Gunter, thank you Dr. Gunter and thank you Big Think for creating this!
OMG, so sorry to hear that.
Did doctors chek you for endometriosis? If not, ask them, it could be it.
Thanks!
Came here to learn, ended up still being mad that woman are the only ones having this and still learned something 👏
Would be very insightful!
gave me chills! Thanks for making this video
I thought it might be a good idea, with the best of intentions, to watch this video; in part, because I'm a man
I must say that it was a good decision.
I wonder how many men will watch this?
😂 I'm watching

@@khoadangbui9451thank you
Same here
Excellent summation. Thank you.
Thank you for posting this. It’s very informative.
Great video! Thank you
What a great video. Our bodies are AMAZING!
Yeah God did a perfect job
Thank you for talking about dysmenorrhoea so openly. Definitely not enough attention paid to it. The pain can be very severe indeed.
Some of these comments are making me wonder what these people are doing watching a channel with the word *think* it its name.
Yeah, imagine thinking men can be women and menstruate, right? Lmao
That part
I'm glad to find this content on youtube i can understand my body better thank you big think .
Here to educate myself and hopefully be a better partner, a better friend and a better future dad, weather it is helping my little princess or educating my little prince 😇
I really love that melody at the beggining!
I'm close to my period right now and this video almost made me cry 🤣
Thank you so much, videos like these are so important not just to women but all people. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this video
Great great video very informative. As a woman I’m very lucky. Always regular , pain free periods.
But one thing that hurts me watch some pseudo science gurus. Telling women they are suffering from reproductive problems because are listening their feminine energy!!! Blaming the Victim. Thank you for this vídeo
Thank you for sharing words that matter 🩷🩵
Thank you for sharing
Nice and informative. 👍
I use App to track my menstrual cycle and it’s very close to accurate as I have 28 days cycle so maybe it goes 29 or hardly 30. But my periods are very painful during first two days then after it goes back to normal.
I love how the comments on this video illustrate SO MANY other bs that also needs to die 😂
Ikr? I don't get why people are already done with her 😅
Or are getting super worked up about anything
I just don’t want to get violently ill anymore when it happens 🙏
Oh, can you please talk about PCOS?
I like Dr. Gunter pink suits. So cool and feminine!
Thank you for validating those of us with irregular periods! I was never able to see the utility of period apps lol
What? Syncing isn't real? My mind just got blown. After finding out about PMS, I'm so grateful to have only mild period pain. But the suicidal thoughts the week before my period are so real 💀I'm a ball of sunshine right when I get it though!
Period synchronization is 100% I experienced it many many times....so I can't be convinced otherwise
Very educative video
"it's never been proven therefore it's proven to be false" 🤔 i don't think that's how logic works
Imagine if someone had told Edison the lightbulb was "proven false" by his thousands of failures.
An yes, since it hasn't been proven that fairies don't exist, it's reasonable to believe that they do!
@@oxymoron500 that's just as irrational as what she said. I hate that everybody makes assumptions and nobody knows how logic works
If you think you can prove it then by all means, do research to prove it and you can be the one to say you proved it to be true.
yes thats how it works that mean they went to the lab and test it out and didnt get the evidence people were saying so that mean its not true
. Usually i had severe pain on the first day. Someone told me if your diet is really healthy you won’t get pain. Next month i had few dates daily and the next period i had no pain . Whenever my diet is not well balanced i get pain.
In case you get pain a solution that worked well for me was chew a pinch of cumin seeds .
In my culture the cumin seeds thing is actually very common! We call it jeera and usually put it in water to drink.
My friend is nearly cramp free with the raspberry leaf tea she drinks!
I take Chlorophyll gel caps and pumpkin seed oil for no cramping
GREAT VIDEO
“Historically, education about the menstrual cycle has been dismal.” And I completely agree.
It’s a shame we don’t have an estrous cycle 🥲 or absorb the lining after or something.
I couldn't understand people who say that pain in labor feels like pain in a period 😶 It may be so in the beginning but not further...
You don't need to understand since you don't experience it. You can simply acknowledge that some people go through that extreme pain. Perhaps you didn't intent to be dismissive but articulate yourself carefully when it comes to other people's experiences and do not compare with yours.
@@prolozaloser4461 I'm not sure, that you got my message. I meant the pain in labor is much worse than the pain in period and I don't know how they could be compared. What's wrong?
@@prolozaloser4461 in a period you don't experience something like attempts. But I had attempts during 1 hour (instead of the usual 5-10 minutes). It feels like you are tearing up from the inside 🤷♀️ labor and period are just unsimilar. You may experience a strong pain in a period but it isn't similar to labor
@@fossaflute you dont know if it is comparable for other people is clearly what he is saying???
@@painterlyrabbit do you say hypothetically or do you know some women who suffered in a period more than in labor?
You guys should do an episode on endometriosis
great video
Truly wish that there was this kind of info (and less myths) when I was growing up. Would have given me peace of mind and probably helped to deal better but the horrible pain. Hoping all PEOPLE menstruating get this and better info over time (yes, I said people! As a woman my femininity does not feel threatened by whatever way others identify themselves)
Lmao 🤣
Only real women menstruate. You are literally complaining about "myths" but are spreading another myth in the same comment. Impeccable logic.
Your right to female-only spaces is threatened and these are crucial for females' well-being and safety. If you can't call police on creepy dude in woman's bathroom because he will call you transphobic and you may even loose your job for that, then you are in danger. Think about why those spaces were established in the first place. If you don't need female spaces then use gender neutral ones but don't make decision for all women, including little girls and those with traumas who don't want to change in front of people with male bodies.
it's crazy how these replies made assumptions
I wish this video was a part of the basic curriculum in every country
This video is unfair to the Fertility Awareness Method. You’re not supposed to rely solely on an app, you have to study a little bit in order to understand your symptoms yourself.
For me the FAM has done wonders, a natural method that helps you understand your own body and learn a lot about your health.
The app failed to predict my period a few times and I knew it was wrong from the begining because I also chart my symptoms with pen and paper.
everyday more mesmerized at God's creation! as women we are beautiful and have the greater blessing possible!
I've never tracked my period in my life. I can just tell when I'm about to get it by the way my stomach feels 3 nights before.
@@mehakverma7043 That's good for you but that's not how it is for everyone unfortunately.
@@PrincessJichu Yeah, I mean, I didn't say it was. You shared your experience so I shared mine.
Im on my period while watching this vid and all of a sufden i have sharp pain on my lower back 🤨
This is so cool.
Could you please release a video about menstruation on birth control pills? I would love to know more about it.
Literally about to cry because I have always felt like I’m just a “breeder” since I was a child with health class and adults just reinforcing that idea. Every woman and young girl needs to watch this! I am so thankful this popped up on my fyp 😊
Lo, growing up in Germany, a "developed" country my sex ed in the year 2018 was still all about menstruation as connected to pregnancy, also I remember the thing that they mostly taught us was "DON'T HAVE SEX!" and if you do "DON'T GET PREGNANT!"
when the cramps are so bad you're trying to find the reason for them
"for some people" ??!!!! ONLY AND ONLY WOMEN BLEED THROUGH THEIR UTERUS. SORRY TO BREAK IT TO EVERYONE.
Drinking game: take a shot every time she says "woman"
It pains me to see how a doctor can’t specifically say women when referring to menstrual cycles.
She can say it, she just chooses to use the other label instead
That would go against the agenda.
You should tackle the problem of clickbait headlines (connecting tracking your cycle and crime of abortion) with facts instead of fear mongering.
Abortion is not and shoyld never be a crime
@@baristaz8834That's a blatant lie, because it is penalised in a number of jurisdictions.
And rightly so.
As someone experiencing irregular periods for the first time in my life at 43, had some testing done and so far nothing abnormal found, put on a bunch of meds to try to regulate it. It's more than likely peri-menopause, and the last 2 months have been miserable.
I'm a person who has menstrual cycle :) No ones saying she is a woman
you are a female who has a menstrual cycle.
