    I just had a similar problem when I went to get gas at speedway this morning. Thanks for the video.
    Interestingly after doing everything it still wouldn't start. I thought it was the pump but it's given no sign of going out, and then it occurred to me that the car wouldn't start if it's not in park so I put the key into the on position shifted in and out of park to neutral to drive then back to park and presto started right up. It's happened before but it was years ago. I've had my 07 ford expedition for a long time and currently at 300k miles I've traveled all over the United States and its still a beast. Thanks again for all you do here it's gotten me through many situations
    You should consider putting a video collection together on DVD and sell it. That's the quality you put into these videos I'd buy it 😄

    Dude! You rock! My sister and I both have '03 Expeditions, and within a week or two of each other they both started having this problem Mine was worse. Died completely, and when I connected a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail, no fuel pressure. I assumed it was the fuel pump, and was going to replace it. My sister took hers to the dealer. Since hers was intermittent, they told her at first they couldn't reproduce. Then the next day, they told her it was the fuel pump. After watching your video, I went and tested mine, and bypass the relay like you did, and lo-and-behold, she started right up and ran fine! Amazing. Now to buy a replacement fuse panel.
    Thanks again! Keep doing what you do!

      I've been told that buying a replacement fuse box isn't a 100% fix. Is that what you did? I'm curious because I sent my fuse box to a place in Virginia that replaced my burnt relay with a hi- temp one. It lasted up until now. I'm starting to experience the same problem again. So I'm torn on what to do now.

    I was getting ready to pull the fuse box out of my wife's Navigator, to see it the fuel pump relay had burned up like so many do. Your video will help me test that relay before going to all of the work of pulling the fuse box and disassembling it.
    Thanks.
    I hope to locate the wire that powers that relay's coil (#303), then tap into it and mount an external relay and socket without having to remove and disassemble the fuse box. This way I can replace the relay easily if it ever burns out again.
    I would suggest to anyone repairing or replacing this fuse box board, that they replace their fuel filter at the same time.

    Had a similar problem with my 2002 Explorer. Turned out a small rodent had gotten in the fuse box and chewed through the PCM ground wire to the fuel pump relay and chewed a bunch of insulation off adjacent wires as well. Absolutely drove me crazy. So the moral of the story is do a good visual check of the condition of the wiring as well as verifying circuit integrity and function.

    Thank you, my 2004 Expedition was randomly stalling and last night would not restart. I ran through this test and jumped the fuel pump just like you did in this video and presto, the car started. I ordered a new relay to solder onto the board, unfortunaly no one local will sell the relay and will have to drive with the jumped wire for couple days but at least I wont spend 500 on a whole new board.

    Hi just happen to see this video. I purchased a 2004 Eddie Bauer with the 4.6L with 170k miles. Purchased from the auction and it started and drove 30 feet to clear a lane. The vehicle was a repo so it running condition was noted as run and drive. However after i saw the check engine code, I scanned it to see a misfire cylinder 3 only everything else was great. I shut it off, packed up my gear and turn the key and crank no start???? Took the vehicle to a shop and the tech diagnosed multiple codes for fuel pump, said fuel pump reset was not triggered and stated relays even the R303 was working properly his diagnoses... he also stated a theft deterrent code as if the SUV was not recognizing the key. I informed him of the many videos of the R303 to include yours; the BEST of them ALL, claiming the R303 as a relay as culprit. I asked the tech did he verify the R303, he says vehicle runs as long as you're pumping fuel in it and R303 showed good on his test. I feel that through your full diagnoses seen today, My Expedition with 170K is a victim of this relay R303 and the tech is making an attempt to take me for a financial ride as he want to replace the fuel pump and continue to charge to troubleshoot is there are no positive results. I am a disabled veteran former mechanic that has to now send my work out but I will not be a money pit for someone's financial gain! Any advice is welcomed... :)

    I've always hated the way Ford uses internal non-replaceable relays. I've done a couple injector cleanings with the OTC tool that flushes via the fuel rail, and I've ended up disconnecting the IFS switch to disable the fuel pump as pulling the fuel pump fuse also disables the injectors. Wish I'd have known about the 4-pin connector and that there's nothing else critical on it. I'll do that in the future. Great video!

    a simple quick test every car or truck usaully has a large fuse next to it in the box under the hood, just try using the fuse relay next to it swat it for temp fix wala starts if not back to drawing board.i always carry circuit breaker, male to male jumper wire, cube type relay in glove compartment.

    • @paulmonk7820
      @paulmonk7820 3 роки тому

      @william arnold: 1st, this fuel pump relay is soldered to the circuit board in the fuse panel. You can't just unplug it and try another one. 2nd, the fuse panel is inside behind the kick panel on the passenger side, not under the hood. 3rd, "fuse relay" and "large fuse" make no sense.

After checking a few things I saw in the video, found it needed a FPCM, unplugged it to change and discovered that the ground wire pigtail for the plug had corroded completely off the frame. • @paulmonk7820
      @paulmonk7820 3 роки тому

      @Kent Shockney: Where did you put the "bigger" relay, and why the extra fuse? What was the current rating of the relay and fuse? Did you completely bypass the circuitry or wiring for the fuel pump? If you installed a fuse with a current rating higher than the original, you could have done more damage, especially to the fuel pump.

    Nice video. I assume to fix your truck you replaced the central junction box / fuse module? Seeing as the fuel pump relay is soldered in place, can a fellow save some bucks by pulling the relay and soldering a donor in place, OR, could you solder pigtails for a standard 12V relay onto the board and have the relay situated external from the central junction box? I'm assuming the central junction box might be pricey?

    i suspect a faulty fuel pump for mine. I did a battery bypass like in your video and I still don’t hear the pump prime. When I do KOEO the load runs for about 2 seconds and then drops to 6.6v. When I crank, the load(halogen bulb) turns on and the volts jump up to 12.3. The engine starts running if I use starter fluid so I know everything else is OK

    to whom it may concern...I had a crank, no start on a 2003 ford taurus 3.0. I had fuel and spark. Tooka while to figure it out, but the sumgun was FLOODED! I didnt think fuel injection could flood, but apparently it does. here is the fix..FLOOR the gas pedal prior to starting it. Apparently this signals the computer to shut off the fuel pump until it starts. I wonder if it is just too much pressure on the fuel rail or what, but it started up and sputtered for a bit. Then smoothed out. Just an oddball situtuation that may help someone out.

    Mann I never.comment hardly but love your videos I've watched more than I could need to know. But there is one thing I can not find in your array of masterminded videos. I was driving through the woods.with a trailer and 4wheeler. And going around a washed out bend I didn't see it but hit a rut like a pothole and.loud bang from front right wheel that has a very bad wheel bearing. All the rough idel driving foot on gas and brake to keep it running. Altho the brakes are not dragging and is the last symptom in the list for this issue that was not happened yet. Anyway it seemed a little funny maybe a hesitation didn't think much of it. 100 feet later made a right turn onto plow gravel road and stepped o. It a little and accerated moderately for about 3 or 4 seconds and it just shut off and costed 200ft to a stop. Every single time I try to restart it start fine for the issues it has (including cam phasers and chain guides) it runs for 2 seconds and quits. Starts pretty easy and just quits over and over. So recap turn key cranks it starts runs 2 seconds then quits. It got very wet and so muddy lower half of rad and ac completely plugged. Had it.towed.pressure washed everything no difference. What could it be? Please help my only driving vehicle.

      Got it home pressure washed the very goopey creek mud off it. Pressure washed the engine bay moderately this time. Normally gets spayed extreemly hard every 2 or 3 months. So.. it dries over night -N- half the next day. Still damp but starts and runs. Throws codes stuck throttlebody blade. Revs up fine limited to 3krpm in neutral. feels little rough idel but still has a puddle water onto the intake. So I assumed dampness from condensation and standing water. So then on the test drive made it a mile until it drops down to a 400rpm extreemly rough idel. Feathering throttle does nothing at all. 3 different people stop and offer help.. one very nice guy stops with a Yukon and helps me pull it from the stop lights to a nearby gas station. After an hour I finally get the extreemly corroded studs out of the throttle body inlet without them snapping off in a junky ford plastic upper intake with metal(assuming again aluminum with steel studs) inserts. Uhg so called engineers just want your life to be in he'll. Anyway wedged between the blade and housing is a 4 inch long single pleat from the soggy airfilter. My poor earlier inspection of the ripped air filter as I pulled the tray(drawer) out. would have should have seen the little bitty strip of the paper had already been sucked into the throttle body. Thanks for reading! I hope this helps someone altho I'm sure very unique and not so common. What a torque monster of a motor to tear the paper right out filter because it was damp

    Could you help with my problem on Ford Expedition 2000 model? My problem is the engine crank but no start. I noticed that there's no fuel supply at fuel rail. I also found that the fuel pump relay has no "NEGATIVE" signal, but the ignition supply and B+ is present. Even I jump a wire from relay coil +supply goin to fuel pump enertia switch ..the positive there coming on and supply the pump but still it doesn't start I don't have a diagram for this model. The main problem is NO NEGATIVE signal on fuel pump relay. I check the voltage at CKP and measure it's resistance I got a reading og 1.5 volts on each wire with my negative probe is on ground. And got 360 OHMs for the CKP sensor. I appreciate any hint you could give on my problem.

    @fordtechmakeuloco. Another question. Why cant you just wire in an external relay to bypass the BCM? BCM is $510 and programming is $220 which is $730 total if you can wire around the BCM to drive it to Ford in order to avoid a tow. This is a really steep price compared to the older relay in the fuse box which was a $5 dollar relay and 5 minutes of labor.

    My expedition wouldn’t start. I had a hell of a time removing the starter and after testing it, it works. Now I’ve lost the upper bolt. All my tools are laid out. Your simple fix is too damn confusing to follow. Idk what the hell you got going on but I’m fucked. I’ll slap everything back together call a wrecker I can’t afford and take it to a mechanic I can’t afford. Then I’m gonna sell this piece of shit and buy something reliable. (Not a Ford)

    Ok here's the situation. I am not a mechanic, but necessity has found me underneath my vehicles for years ..I think it's the fuel pump on my 1999 Ford expedition that's gone bad. But I don't replace parts unless I basically know it will fix it. That excludes cheap easy fixes like fuses relays ECT.. A week ago my Eddie bower 1999 expedition was was towed after a twenty miles trip. It failed on hills. At home I replaced the fuel filter. We drove it afterwards, ran perfect. Two days later after doing errands in town ,it failed. Two hours later it crank and ran fine.. I took it home. I did not not over prime it.. for three days I tried to make it act up. It was running perfect.. I did not drive it.. wanted it to fail in the shade near my tools. We decided to keep just five gallons in it and I would drive it and check for any symptoms that I missed. The engine ran perfect..no skips .. cranked without even pressing the accelerator. Moved it to it's normal parking spot. Did not crank but once a day. No accelerator was us used.. I wanted a complete failure. About two days later it turned over but didn't start.. I tried it by turning accessory on and off which would help build up pressure and eliminate a faulty check valve in the fuel tank.. I now have complete failure. That is what I wanted. I think it's either a sensor or the fuel pump. Cutting to the chase, checking the 12 volts at the fuel pump would seem the next step.. I think that is there because I hear the electric fuel pump turn on every time I manually turn the key to accessory position. It's possible it's not a strong 12 volts.. don't know what to look for underneath. Btw it's a 4.6 liter engine.. I plan to disconnect the positive 12 volts at the battery, then apply 12 volts to it once I identify the terminals. If it runs fantastic (I'll make sure to chock all four tires.. make sure in park and emergency brake on and I use blocks and 8 by 8 timber for supports) Now I that I find the problem is an intermittent 12 volts . I look for high resistance shorts to ground .. however I think this may be not needed.
    . I.don't think that this is the problem the problem...as the car has a complete charge on battery. It could also be a bad connection on the 12 volts line. I will make sure to ohm out the ground side at the gas tank terminals. I'll get some one to crank it over and see if it will start if I stress the wires. . As I said I don't think this is the situation. I suspect it is a relay being shut off. It is either faulty or it is getting a cut of signal for protection ECT. I can look up the part number probably on Google for that relay or go to the parts store and get a schematic on the suspect fuel pump relay. (I don't suspect it but it is part of the troubleshooting). At this point we may be down to camshaft sensor .. I'm guessing a lot here, but once I know how the circuit works I'll verify it operation. I know I can probably just switch the relay with another one in the fuse box ,but I want to catch it in failure mode. I have reread my Chilton's but the fuel pump relay has multiple control lines. I read that that on cranking the pwm sends a ground signal to the fuel pump relay. It's control line seems to have multiple control possibilities.. I think the inertia switch, the low oil, the camshaft sensor, and crankshaft sensor will shut it off . It says that on starting the pwm sends a ground signal three times to build up gas pressure.. you know what.. I think in that's where I should have started.. if the fuel line has 25 to 50 or so psi on it per manual, I can totally rule out the supply of fuel to engine ,I think. It could possibly be an intermittent, maybe now failed coil... I hope it has a Schrader valve. Am I right this should elimanate the fuel question. I would think that it would run for just little while if I find gas on the line. It just turns over. My bet is there is no gas on the fuel rail. I haven't checked for codes yet. Any help will be appreciat

    Great job with explaining everything, just one quick question , when probing the pin on the pdb are you only supposed to have battery voltage for the initial 2 seconds or constant? Because I get battery voltage(12v) and then it drops to 6.6v thanks!

    My 2003 expedition will cut off when driving after stumbling. The last time I got it restarted and limped home. Would not start after I got it home. 3 days later and a dead battery (door ajar drain I think) I put my booster pack on it and it started right away and ran for 30+ minutes. Is this the relay? Please help!

    Have you ever had a Ford F150 5.4 with a fuel pump that WOULD run, but not provide enough fuel pressure? My 98 ran fine, but the other day, would crank, no start. I sprayed starting fluid into the throttle body and it started, then died instantly. Now, it won't start up after spraying it. The pump turns on, but you can't hear it unless your ear is within a few inches from the pump. 0 fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I seen a Toyota 4runner with a failed pump just like what my Ford is doing. The relay and fuses are good on my Ford.

    I have a 2004 model parked it in a parking lot then came out of the store and no start, I replaced the relay in 2016 and checked it and the fuse and both are good. I ran the hot lead from the battery to the green wire for the pump and it does not come on. How can I be sure it is the pump and not the inertia switch? I have pressed the button and it does not click it only springs back up.

    Had an issue where the PCM Relay had a charred prong which was causing intermittent power-no crank. Changed it out, but heard that it may be related to r303 failing, which requires either an entire box change or soldering in a new contact and possible new connectors. I'm gonna buy the r303 relay just in case since I do a bit of circuit board work on the side

    • @cryangallegos

      About 2 years later and surprise, PCM relay (R203) charred again!
      I'm seeing that this is likely an issue with the fuse box receptacles either getting loose or corroded. I had thought that the last relay issue I had felt with was on my 2008 Fusion, but nope, it was this relay again lol
      Because I've been getting a lean code for awhile now (on one side only) I'm wondering if the fuel pump is failing and maybe drawing a higher load than normal which is trickling down to associated systems
