    Just replaced my relay. I went to the dealer for the relay and they said the fuse box on my 03 is not serviceable. They wanted $650 for a new fuse box. This is the #1 reason for the internet. People helping others. Thanks for the video. God bless and happy thanksgiving!

    Thanks, mate! Wife's Expedition shit the bed as she pulled into a parking space at a local store (what luck!). Crank, no start, and my first suspects were cam or crank sensors, fuel pump relay, or the fuel pump I've been dreading replacing. Scanned it and found fuel pump voltage low, so I had to find a the relay, which required internet research and led me to your video. Promptly ordered a replacement on my suspicion, pulled the box and took it home to disassemble and repair. I found much less-significant damage to the relay than you had, it was barely noticeable-just a bulge on the side of the relay, and a solder connection that didn't look so hot. Repaired and running Ford for $11. I owe you a beer!

    Appreciate your video! Took me an entire day to diagnose my 2003 expedition... After running tests to check the starter, fuel pump, and the pcm relay... It led me to the r303. Omron has an alternative internal relay, since the original is obsolete... part number D8QN-1CE. I ordered mine from Arrow electronics online for only $3.30... I paid an additional $18 for overnight shipping, because this is my daily driver and needed it quickly. (I currently have a relay- bypass ran until I get the new part tomorrow)... I'll be back to watch this video a gazillion more times when I start to solder.

    Having the same issue with an 04 Expedition and the fuse panel is exactly the same as Hero 3 and the exact same relay was burnt so I think I have to buy me a new relay in order to get this to work. Thank you so much for a very explanatory video what can you say the great video and I hope anybody else has this problem will look you up and see that a simple fix is all that is needed so thanks again for all your help.

    This video helped my fix my '03 Expedition! I've had this car for 10 yrs - it has never once not started up on the first turn of the key. Three days ago when I turned the key it would just turn over and over - no gas. I found your video, and since I had recently had multiple roof leaks, I surmised that R303 had to be the problem. Pulled the box - my relay had just a very small bump. Ordered the part on Amazon, and two days later I was was soldering a motherboard (BTW...I've soldered maybe 3 or 4 times before ever) It was the ugliest soldering job you had ever seen - but it worked. $12 later ..and my beloved 2003 Expedition with 212k roared back to life. My entire family thought I was crazy when they saw all of those fuses and my map of the layout - but my Expedition is running. Thanks for this video. Earlier in the week, I was quite sure I was going to have to get a new car - but not now!

    Thankyou for your excellent vid. Relay 203: Fuses 32,33,34, Fuel Pump Relay, Fuel Pump, & PCM Solenoids would get real hot at connection stud 5 and would scorch the plastic of the relay. So, with the guidance and caveat about NOT removing the main power feed that you provide in your excellently edited video, I removed and opened the Junction box. None of the internal, 301-305 relays showed any signs of heat fatigue / charing. Only the female connector 5 of R203 had carbon. I sanded it off and reassembled the box. .... It appears I have a failed fuel pump... BUT I also have a parasitic drain of 250 mA that I am in the process of finding the cause. Hopefully it will be the fuel pump.... Again, thank you for the time you spent developing this excellent video.... May 21 2019: Tom Jones, New Orleans

    Amazing helpful video. Chasing this same intermittent problem. Previous owner had shop put in fuel pump ND then said ecu is bad now and needs to be replaced. I ordered this relay, going to slap it in there before any more troubleshooting. Same relay just went out on my furnace control board. New board $350. Relay cost $3.50. Alot of control boards I've been finding in fridges, furnace, etc. Have relays failing. Made in China relays in most cases...

    Great video. 2003 Lincoln Navigator here. Same as expedition ford. To add Just as described in this video. To open the top battery clip has a tab, pull that one. For the bottom I used a paint can opener to tab open that bottom clip by pulling down from the second clip. It drop in one piece without removing the fuse box. Also to many fuses to remove and check if its burned. So, After removal if fuse box. Burn out can't be seen well either. So, I tap with a screw driver one of the spacer end. so it wont break and fall in the fuse box. Keeping the box from top to bottom. The second plastic spacer between the second and third relay. I tapped the bottom only and moved some what with a screwdriver and then visible the burned out. Glue gun if need so. Just move back spacer and done mine stays solid. Ebay or junkyard for spare parts relays Great Video man ty👍

      Thank you for the nice comment. I also like your profile do better - be better. I think this video has helped many people over the years. It’s not the easiest thing to do but it will sure save you a lot of money. what’s sad is the dealerships won’t do this. They just want to sell you an expensive part. And charge you $125.00 per hour that takes 45 minutes to do but the book calls for 2.5 hours. It’s a very expensive ordeal to take your vehicle to a Car Dealership for repairs.

      The big bubble that you see has been caused by excessive heat. The heat degrades the relay and therefore makes it Inoperable. I hope you’re able to replace it and save money. Thanks for the comment!

      I think you’ll find an overheated relay. It’s a lot easier than pulling the fuel tank. If you’re not getting voltage to the fuel pump then you’ll most likely solve it by replacing the relay. If you read through the comments others have found different techniques to resolve this. Good luck!

    Just a heads up. I have a 03 expedition eddie bauer 5.4L 4x4 think I have this same problem however I have no codes. I got stuck at work last night was running fine, came out and started it up and it was running really rough. Tried restarting and nothing, cranking super fast and it tried to start a few times but not even close. Watched this video and others on the subject. Ran a jumper wire i got from cutting off the cord of my cigarette lighter air compressor directly from the positive on the battery under the hood to the green wire with yellow stripe, its on the 4 pin connector. Unplugged the connector and stuck the wire in the back side used electrical tape to secure it. Then ran it out the door into the hood compartment being careful not to pinch it I taped it onto the safer area where weather stripping would pad it a bit. Started right up, no diagnosis was done at all. This got me home and I'm thankful for this video and the others which I will link either in a edit or a new post should be next to this post. I will note the 4x4 high and 4x4 low lights were flashing occasionally but I made it home about 20 miles from my work.

    Mike, VERY informative video. Thank you!
    I had to replace my whole fuse box because my case would not open without ruining the whole thing. (2001 ford expedition, with assumed burnt fuel pump relay. Stalling while driving, etc.) My question is: What other non serviceable relays are next to that fuel pump one? When I replaced my fuse box (used from ebay) well, there went my ac and heat. Nothing! No auto, no manual, no heat or air whatsoever. (I got a refund.) I'm only assuming that this new USED one has THAT internal relay burnt out! (My externals were fine.) Cannot find any diagrams for my year that tell me what else is inside there next to the fuel pump relay, but will continue to study. Also, I will be checking my fuel pump driver module (underneath by spare tire on cross member) to see if it is rusting and maybe causing the short in the first place. Have sealed all around my windshield to help with water leakage. 5.4 V8 Eddie Bauer, rear wheel drive. Thank you!!!

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  6 років тому

      I'm not sure why the case wouldn't open, they're hard to open at first but they all should open. But anyways, if you bought a new fuse panel they have to match exactly, If you had problems with the A/C not working you bought the wrong fuse panel. I never mentioned this but my Daughter did the same thing and spent $175. The ebay seller did refund her money. I hooked it up and the Alternator wouldn't charge, The battery fault light was on. I looked inside the panel and they were different. She then found the Relay and I changed it out. I'm not that good at soldering but it worked. As far as diagrams your owners manual should show all the fuses and relays. Thanks for the comment!

    I couldn’t have done a better video myself and mast likely not as good. I love the idea of putting it back factory but I took one apart for someone but didn’t realize I could buy that relay. I put it back together and made and external relay using the battery stud on the central junction box to power pins 30 and 85 on the relay. Pin 87 to dark green and yellow wire in the connector above the center of the cover with blue around it and the blue and orange pcm relay control in the connector just below and to the left with white around it and it was a very fast repair and it shouldn’t happen again. The Ford dealer said the pump was bad but that wasn’t the problem.

    I have ford expedition 2003 and I don't have the owners manual.
    and I have problem with no start but cranking.
    I am believe something wrong wit the fuel pump relay or fuel pump it self.
    this is the same problem that you have and have to replace the R303 relay?
    can you send me a copy of the fuse image and location of the fuse?

      I show you exactly where the relay is located in the video, It's behind the motherboard. I would check that before you take out the fuel pump. Check your fuel pump to see if it comes on for about one or two seconds during the priming when you first turn on the key, Open your gas cap and listen very close while someone cycles the key.

    very helpful video. HOWEVER! on my 2003 excursion the relay is melted but the soldering points are on the "bottom " of the circuit board which is like a 3 layer cake with another circuit board at the other side. In other words, the fuse block is like a sandwich and the relay is on the outside of the bread with the prongs sticking in and through to the other side that is NOT easily pulled apart. I really hope I explained that well enough LOL

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  3 роки тому

      I think I understand but having a picture would be more helpful. The solder on the soldering points can be removed with a suction bulb. You may have a really damaged mother board that can't be fixed. If that's the case try getting parts from a salvage yard but use a brand new relay. I've also heard there's a way to bypass the relay with an external relay that's resettable. Regardless the engineers really under estimated the amount of heat the small relay could withstand.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Didn't bother ordering a new relay. I used a olde AC relay and soldered extension wires to it as it is a full size relay and would no way fit in side.

      I used compressed air to blow the melted solder away, There is a suction bulb available for this. More heat may also be needed for the mother board? It's delicate work and just be careful, Sorry I couldn't answer back until now. good luck.

    • @drop469
      @drop469 6 років тому +1

      Use non-conductive alcohol used by electronic manufacturers to remove the environmental coating or scrap it off and then use solder with flux and it wouldn't hurt to drop a little solder flux on the joint when you have heated the joint and pad of the board properly or you'll end up with a lot of cold solder joints and solder splatted all over the board like I saw in this video. I am mil spec solder certified so I know what I am talking about. You can use fingernail polish to reseal the joint and pad on the board when you are finished. You can use a solder wick to soak up the solder a lot better than trying to suck it out with a desolder bulb.

      I think there is three other fuses in the circuit for the fuel pump. Check those, check all the plugs and if you soldered in a new relay make sure you don’t have a cold solder joint. Check grounds and connection’s. Other than getting a bad relay that’s all I can think about. Hopefully this helps!
