- For this video I am going to be showing 3 releases of John Carpenter's The Fog. We have the StudioCanal 4 disc collector's edition, Zavvi exclusive 4k Steelbook and and the Optimum Blu-ray release. I will also be showing picture comparisons of the 4K transfer against the Blu-ray.
I have the Shout Factory 4K Steel book pre-ordered. I'm so excited, I loved this film when I was a kid.
Hey Joseph. I haven't pre-ordered the Steelbook yet but I will soon. I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of it where you get a 7-inch vinyl with it. Can't wait to get my hands on it and hear the brand new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Definitely one of my favourite John Carpenter movies
@@millerman9991 I love that these horror films are getting proper 4k releases. I also have Robert Eggers' The Witch limited edition 4k from Second Sight Films on the way.
I actually just done a video on the Witch and I'm hoping to have it out in the next couple of days. Still haven't seen the movie yet but I've heard great things about it
It's a night and day difference and I really enjoyed the movie after so many years. Let's hope we soon get some more Carpenter in 4k. Great video Keith.

I have the "normal" Studio Canal release om 4K (with the slipcase in the same art style as your collector's edition) , but that steelbook design blows everything away. Only minor complaint is the vague movie title on the spine. I think you can hardly read it when it's standing on your shelves.
The difference in the colors with the comparison is shocking.
Hey Robert. It was very hard to see the name on the spine of it when I done this video but when you have in your collection you can see it a lot clearer. I think they had something to do with the lighting in the room is to why it was so hard to see it. The difference really is Massive and probably one of my favourite 4K transfers. I really enjoyed the comparisons in this video and like you said it's really is night and day. The good news is scream factory are bringing out a 4K release this September and it will have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. So get your cake ready my friend it's about to get some icing
Keith, you are a Legend reviewing this classic, like you, it's one of my ultimate favourites. It was only yesterday that I was reading the script to this movie, the part where Nick and Elizabeth were onboard the Sea Grass, and he was telling her how his father found the gold doubloon. The 4k version of this is beautiful, the colours, clarity, detail, everything. You should do a live link and talk about nothing but John Carpenters' work. The man is a master class. Really really enjoyed this one, Keith. Thanks so much.
It's hard to believe that the scene that you're talking about with Nick and Elizabeth I'm almost certain that wasn't in the original cut of the movie that was a reshoot. The scene is so eerie the way the story is told and of course carpenters beautiful score playing through it. I would love to do a stream on just John Carpenter and to be honest that would be a long stream because I can talk for hours about him. Might be something in the future. @@millerman9991 I remember reading about doing several reshoots because they didn't think the movie had enough jumps and scares, and of course, that scene when the locker burst open was a classic jump moment, it's on a par with Ben Gardeners head popping out the hull of the boat, in Jaws.
Yeah apparently that's why it's not one of John Carpenter's favourite movies because of the reshoots that he had to do on it. But when you do hear of the scenes that weren't originally in the movie you do wonder what the hell the first cut of that movie was like.

Got all the John Carpenter collectors 4k sets from Studiocanal now managed to bag them when they got reissued.
It was the one good thing about those universal reissues is the fact that everyone that missed out the first time was able to get a second bite at it. Congrats on picking them up. They look fantastic

I never had the pleasure of seeing this movie on the big screen but it's always a dream of mine to see this in a drive-in cinema and I'm hoping someday that will happen over here and hopefully it will be in October. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before big trouble gets released on 4k. The only thing that makes me worry a little bit is the fact that its a 20th Century Fox movie and Disney own 20th century.

Hey Anthony. I would do anything to have a Steelbook edition of The Fog with the original artwork. For a second there I thought we might get it with Scream factory but unfortunately the adopted for new artwork. It still looks amazing though
Picked the 4k Steelbook up a while back Keith will be watching it this Halloween. You can see a noticeable between the two transfers .Thanks for sharing 👍

Hi Keith - have this in my 4k collection but haven’t got round to watching it yet (ashamed to say I’ve never seen the movie itself) but excited to do so following your review. My wife and I just watched Hell Fest in 4k following your review a few weeks back, we’d never heard of it but really enjoyed it and you’re right the 4k transfer was excellent.
What would I give to be in your shoes to actually watch this movie for the first time again. You have to promise me when you do finally watch it please let me know what you think. Honestly it's one of my favourite horror movies of all time and it's probably one of my favourite 4K transfers. Great to hear that you enjoyed hellfest as well. That seems to be a little bit of a cult Following for that movie and I'm happy that there is because I honestly think it's an entertaining horror movie. Hell yeah I really want to get this on 4K. I only have The Thing, They Live and Halloween so far for Carpenter 4Ks. Studio Canal did an amazing job with Ran on 4K (Kurosawa).
I have to admit every single John Carpenter 4K transfers have looked amazing and if you're a fan of the fog I definitely recommend picking it up. But if you do decide to pick it up wait till scream factories release of it because you get a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack with that. I have not seen Ran on 4K but I've heard fantastic things about it. Shout Factory has this coming out soon (up for Pre-Order) and is using the Original art. And again, doing the sacred Bones 7" box that I know you like. Like all the others Carpenter 4Ks they have done, it will be the Studio Canal version.
Yeah I pre-ordered the deluxe edition there a couple of weeks back. Honestly cannot wait to get my hands on it because I'm such a fan on of those editions and not only that but to hear the fog in Dolby Atmos is going to be very exciting.

Thanks Keith, Just watched the fog in 4k and you are right, its beautiful. Since upgrading to a large screen 4k hdr tv during the pandemic I have been rewatching a lot of my old favs in 4K HDR, and for many of them its like seeing them again for the first time. Its incredible how many details you didn't notice before. When I think back to the first time I saw the fog as a kid on VHS I have to laugh at the difference. Do you have a copy of Prince of Darkness in 4k? if not you should really check it out, another classic from Carpenter and looks stunning in 4k!
Hey Chris. I done the exact same thing as yourself when I bought my latest OLED TV. Went through all my favourite 4K movies and the difference in quality is quite staggering especially if you compare it to VHS 😆 🤣. I do own Prince of Darkness and I am a fan of the movie but it's nowhere near my favourite Carpenter movie. The 4K transfer is extraordinary and I might do a review on that someday. Great idea for a series Keith, I had that blu ray back in the day and upgraded to tue Scream Factory blu ray then went to Studio Canal 4k...which I'm VERY happy with 👌👌 forgot how good the collectors edition was 😲😁😁 great comparison Keith, totally agree that this movie is outstanding in 4k huge upgrade for me mate 👍👍👍👍 interested to see what you will show on the next video in this series Keith 🤩👍👍
Hey John. I had no idea you had know idea you had the scream factory release of the Fog. It would have been interesting to do a comparison between that Edition and the 4k but something's telling me we still would have got a nice upgrade particularly in colour. It's a fun series that I'm going to start and I look forward to doing more. Maybe a few Giallo movies might make it in here
Height channels are an absolute must for The Fog … sound is as key to this movie as Quiet Place. Atmos has been disappointing if you have Auro 3D upmixer. No worries then!
Hey Jeff. I absolutely agree with you and I cannot wait to hear what Scream Factory Atmos is going to sound like on this movie. The DTS 5.1 audio you get with this edition still sounds great but there is definitely room for improvement. Can't wait to get my hands on the scream factory edition
@@millerman9991 I hope this 4k is better than Studio Canal, it’s too dark, the Shout Factory Collector’s Edition Blu-ray looks better IMO. This is my second favorite Carpenter movie, so I’m hoping it’s an improvement over Studio Canal. Don’t know what is happening to his movies in 4k, but the second Halloween 4k was a noticeable improvement on the initial 4k. Disappointing to have to keep rebuying these.
Hey Jeff I have to respectfully disagree with you because I think the 4K transfer on the studio canal release is extraordinary. Yes the Dolby vision has slightly darkened the picture but I honestly think it adds to the tone of this movie and to be honest the scream factory release is going to have Dolby Vision and Dolby vision just naturally darkens a picture. I reviewed both Halloween 4K Editions and to be honest there was minimal differences between the two. Not to say that didn't look good they look quite amazing. But not a major difference
Great review Keith. This is on my wanted list along with Escape from New York and They Live. I like how the normal versions all have matching cover designs. Just a pity Escape from LA is a different release so doesnt match.

This one looks like a massive upgrade. Good that theyve put some good work into the transfer to make the upgrade worthwhile.
Just a shame they havent released the full Carpenter collection. A box set would be awesome.
Hey Chris. Whenever you do decide to pick up escape and they live as well as the Fog trust me when I say you are going to be in for a treat. All three of them look fantastic and studio canal done a great job with them. As you can see on the pictures in this video the fog has a big upgrade over that previous Blu-ray and it's by far the best it's ever looked.

Studio Canal do some good work and its great that they preserve these pieces of cinema history by releasing them in 4K.
Here's a random one for you, I was reminded today that Carpenter directed Memoirs of the invisible man with Chevy Chase and Daryl Hannah 🤯
I love most of John Carpenter's movies. But I have to admit I am not a big fan of Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Don't get me wrong it's definitely his most ambitious movie. But it felt a bit flat for me if I'm completely honest.
Nice one, The Fog is one of my favourites. Think I'd have preferred the original art on it as well, nice how they feature on the lighthouse on the disks packaging tho.

Very expensive getting Sream Factory sets, would be good if they did European releases instead of us having to import them. Another thing is the region is locked on A from Scream Factory, Glad 4K is region all, but course I have to change to my all region Bluray player from their normal Blurays. Im ordering now the Bionic sets just released.
I couldn't agree more when it comes to scream factory and how expensive they can be. I find myself very selective when it comes to buying from scream factory. It is a shame that we don't have the European equivalent but a lot of screaming factories titles do end up getting down here one form or Another.

I love the back of the steelbook especially Keith, there's something about that picture/setting of it, so good. And blimey the difference in them countryside scenes and the bridge is chalk and cheese on 4k. I do have the scream factory version ordered aswell Keith, so will be interesting to hear the atmos track of it and I guess picture wise it will be identical.
And I have to say aswell Keith a bit off topic but after finishing the new resident evil from Netflix, we need a stewards enquiry on how that got released and some might even need to get arrested and jail time for that.
Hey Steve. I started watching the Resident Evil TV series a couple of days ago and I barely made it past the first episode. It never felt once like a Resident Evil movie and IGN had the audacity to say this was the best adoption we have seen of Resident Evil. The two sisters in it drove me insane and that was just one episode. I honestly think they have to give up on this franchise now and just stick to the games
Hi Keith, here in Germany the 4K steelbook was a regular release. Like you I have the amazing Limited Collector's Edition with OST CD from the UK. I also have the German initial Blu-ray release with terrible picture. 😂 That one comes with the same artwork as your one, but the back looks different. The Fog has always been among my favorite horror movies and I can't wait for the Shout Factory release coming with Dolby Atmos. I pre ordered the 4K steelbook which has an insane artwork. Actually I don't really care much about a new transfer by Shout Factory, all I'm looking forward to the most is definitely the new audio. In my opinion The Fog is probably the only movie besides Halloween and JAWS that benefits from its soundtrack the most! I was really disappointed that we didn't get an update concerning the audio when the first 4K release was announced. What Shout Factory did to Halloween and Prince of Darkness in terms of Dolby Atmos was simply stunning. I was absolutely impressed how much more intense each of the movies sounds right now. I honestly couldn't agree more about everything that you said in this comment. The one thing that's letting studio canal down at the moment when it comes to their 4K releases is there lack of Dolby Atmos. When I heard escape from New York on Dolby Atmos for the first time it felt like I was watching the movie for the first time. Never heard anything like it. Just like you I am more excited for the Atmos on the fog more than the picture just because I think the picture quality that we got on this release is probably the best it's ever going to look. But if they can improve on it happy days. I've ordered the the deluxe 4K scream factory edition where you get the 7-inch vinyl with it and I know I will probably pick up that beautiful Steelbook as well. We really have been spoilt when it comes to the Fog and it's editions
@@millerman9991 Shout Factory revealed all the extras on their Facebook page. The 4K transfer remains the StudioCanal encoding, no changes.
@@millerman9991 I forgot to mention that I've been to Point Reyes when I spent time with my relatives from Sacramento CA. Great spot very close to San Francisco.

Shout factory 4K is from Studio Canals scan which is jumps when playing. They won’t fix it after many complaints.

I got the Collector’s Edition, the Steelbook comes in a Slipcase with a poster and some art cards.
But the Steelbook is the same as in the normal version.
Hey Martin can you tell me what's the slipcase like. Is it a hardened box similar to arrow Video or is it your regular slipcase
Love John Carpenter as a director and composer. The fog is one of his stronger films. Canal plus 4K is really great.
Hey Paul. John Carpenter is probably my favourite director of all time and he has probably some of the most iconic scores out there for some of his movies. Particularly his early ones.

Yeah unfortunately when it comes to Dolby vision it's something that we just have to get use to. It can really darken a picture. But when you see how natural the colours look I think it's a good trade-off.

I think Scream Factory uses the Studio Canal releases/transfers we got here in Europa. But they buy the rights to release it in the States. They do thay with more (John Carpenter) releases.
@@reprobert yup you are right, they are using the Studio Canal restoration. But the Dolby Atmos mix is a Scream Factory exclusive, I believe.

I am definitely picking up the scream factory edition. As a matter of fact I pre-ordered the deluxe edition with the 7-inch vinyl. I didn't want to get the Stevie Wayne figure because I'm going to try and get the Steelbook as well and it was costing just a bit too much. As far as the transfer goes I'm more than happy that it has the same transfer as the studio canal because it's one of my favourite 4K transfers. But what does have me excited is the Dolby Atmos. Hey Keith, just finished watching the Fog, on commentary, and finally found out what a stomach pounder is. When Stevie Waynes son asked for a Stomach Pounder and a Coke, it's not a type of food like I thought and so many others, it's actually an execise. Carpenter just threw that in there because it sounded good.

It seems to me that everytime Studiocanal do a movie, Scream Factory does it better.
This happening imo., with the Escape From New York release also. People online saying the Dolby Vision and Atmos is better etc.
Do you think that it's getting to the point where you may as well just wait for the Scream Factory release and save your money?

Hey James that is a fair comment what you just said there. The first thing I will say about the escape from New York released from scream factory I'm almost certain it was the same transfer they used on studio canals the only difference being there was Dolby Atmos and I can tell you now that was a big difference. You will not believe home incredible that movie sounds with Dolby Atmos. The only problem I would have with waiting for scream factories edition is don't forget the fog released on 4K 3 years ago. It's a long time to wait for scream factory to bring out there's. But that is a valid point you're making
@@millerman9991 The only thing I will add, is I'm almost certain I read somewhere that the Dolby Vision is also better on the Scream Factory edition ( I don't mind being corrected on this) better black levels. This being beneficial because of course it's a very dark movie.
These things bother the likes of me because most movie collectors want the best that out there and it irritates lol.
Honestly James I've seen the movie a few times on the studio canal release and I've watched it twice on the scream factory release and I honestly can't see any difference. The only difference is the Dolby Atmos. But that's just my opinion. I'm almost certain when scream factory announced it they said they were using the same studio canal transfer. Don't take my word for that though because I could be wrong
My 4Kult version turned up from Italy. It comes in a very basic slim 4k case not opening to check image etc yet so I will let you know later. Its fine for me as I just wanted The Fog in 4k at a good price which it was.
Did you at least get the slip cover with it because they do come in very nice slipcovers. The Dirty Dancing edition in particular that I got off them has a lovely silky smooth slipcover. Great to hear that you got it though and I really do hope you enjoy it on 4k
@@millerman9991 nope just a thin plastic case like the basic slim cases you get on American titles with no slip.
That's a bit of a shame but at the end of the day like you said you wanted to get the fog on 4K at a reasonable price and you succeeded
But how does the 4K disc fare against the studio canal blu ray which would have been mastered in 4K ?
I honestly didn't check it out because I never had that Blu-ray until I got the 4K edition if you know what I mean. I would imagine there still would be a sizeable upgrade in colour

Hey Paul. Believe it or not but there was 5 Steelbooks because The Thing Steelbook that came out from Zavvi matches up perfectly with the other 4 and yes escape from New York was the other. They all look remarkable beside each other as does the collector's editions of all 5

I honestly didn't know the Steelbook for the thing paired up until I got it in the door and I sat it with the other four. Funny how that worked out. I have pre-ordered the Titans of cult edition of the thing and that is shaping up to be one of the most spectacular looking releases I've seen from them. Videodrome is a great movie but I do have the collector's edition on Blu-ray and I think I'm going to stick with that for a while that is and see if the price drops down on 4k when it does come out

Ye thats fair bud tbh if i had of gotten that special edition when it was released i would stick with it to..I’m just glad i held of paying ebay money for it then arrow release it on 4k..i done the same with deep red!
I already had phenomena so i was happy to just have that edition & I’ll grab the 4k standard.
I did get caught out with bird & cat o nine tails so i have double dipped on them!
Hopefully we’ll get four flies & opera on 4k soon as both deserve a nice treatment at this stage
Yeah I had to double dip a couple of times with arrow Video as well. At least with videodrome they brought out the original artwork edition and maybe i might pick that one up because at least it's something different to the one I have. Arrow have been very lazy in the last year when it comes to the limited edition sets. They just seem to be going back over there catalogue instead of focusing on new editions
The big question is; when are we getting precinct 13 on 4k?

Hey Doug. I'm almost certain around a year ago second sight announced that they were working on a 4K transfer for assault. Hopefully there is some truth behind that but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we do get it. That link you sent me was fantastic and I do remember hearing that before.

Great video Keith, Question for you, i only have a soundbar so would i notice the Atmos over the Dolby 5.1? been looking at picking this and Escape from New York on Scream but both are double the price of the UK one's. Also have you picked up Screams Lifeforce on 4K yet?
Hey Mark. If you don't have a Dolby Atmos compatible soundbar than unfortunately when you put on a Dolby Atmos soundtrack it will resort back to Dolby 5.1. So unfortunately you wouldn't notice a difference. I haven't picked up lifeforce yet but it's definitely One That I Want. Hopefully have it sometime in the next couple of months

Hey Kyle. €40 for the studio canal edition is definitely worth it. Just a quick heads up though because scream factory are bringing it out next month and it's going to have a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack which this version doesn't. Maybe one to think about

I totally agree, their doing this to all transfers nowadays plus darkening the image too much. Look at the difference at 10.25 (blu ray) to 10.27 (4k) in this review, The blu ray is way better and more true to the original source, I saw this movie in the theatre back in 1980 and it looked beautiful, sad how their ruining everything now just for the sake of change.
