As a huge John Carpenter fan I bought the 4 movie 4k set from studio canal which included The Fog. Also picked up the new awesome steelbook with the steelbook artwork poster. Still have the DVD versions too! 😆😅🤣😂 I have a problem. 😁
This is one of my all-time favorite movies but a lot of it is based on nostalgia. The filming locations, in northern California especially, remind me of summer family trips to visit my grandparents in wine country. And you nailed it about the soundtrack, to me this is actually John Carpenter‘s best work. And it definitely makes you feel like the fall or winter. To me it’s just a fun watch that I can put in truly any day or night and feel good about it
Really looking forward to this upgrade. It's a pretty cool flick with that atmospheric vibe. I enjoy the slow burn with this one. As with so many films, it's always imperative to match your mood with the pick of the day to get full enjoyment. This one works well as a lazy rainy Saturday afternoon couch watch.

I preordered The Fog on 4K from shout factory but haven’t watched it yet. I plan on watching it over the weekend while I’m off. I always loved this movie.
Just watched the 4k and I’ll leave my thoughts. I’m gonna give the movie 3 1/4 stars out of 5. The problem I had is that the first half feels a little arthouse with dare I say a very light touch of Polanski. Some of the dialogue scenes even have a little bit of a soap opera feel. Once the fog arrives with the music then we are all Carpenter. I wish he would have given it the Carpenter feel from beginning to end. As far as the transfer - I’ll be the first to say this is a very underrated transfer and I give the transfer 5/5. I’ll try to explain it this way: this movie is presented in a wider aspect ratio but it feels like a full scene 1:85. That’s very difficult to do and it demonstrates Dean Cundey’s mastery of the photographic medium; he picks the perfect focal length for each shot. The closeups and wide shots are perfect, the depth staging including the bokeh is perfect, the lighting separation is perfect, a couple of the sea landscape shots are great. It’s a perfectly lit and shot film with the perfect amount of contrast. It’s really close to flawless. Please note I watched on an oled with a ub820 with all gimmicks turned off on tv with the color space for Dolby set to warm 1 in a pitch black room. On my set up this is in the top 3 Scream/Shout transfers easy. Cheers!
Just watched this last night on a steaming app! Was blown away by it! Yeah it's a bit dated and would be considered cheesy nowadays, but man I really appreciate Carpenter's vision and how he creates an eerie, scary premise.
Brother, EVERYTHING you said abt this film was spot on. From the vibe, theme and story this film brings. It’s definitely that straight forward camp fire eerie tale. I felt the film was evenly paced and did have its slower moments but it really helped with building that suspense and creepy atmosphere. Not many people nowadays will appreciate this film since it’s older and a different style of horror and story telling. This film somewhat reminded me of 30 Days of Night in terms of a scary, eerie atmosphere. And also that Netflix show Midnight Mass which is one of FEW shows I actually loved since I’m more of a movie guy.
Definitely going to pick this up. Have the VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blue Ray. They used to play this movie at a comic convention I used to go to in Miami in the 80s along with Halloween and The Howling lol.

Blake played by Rob Bottin Make Effects artist was Awesome Never said a word The Halloween music and Halloween 3 music witch I think was underrated and it didn't help with storyline being totally different and the audience felt cheated because they expected Michael Myers It's still a very good film.I still like when Adriane Barbeau goes to the studio and walk all the to the bottom to get to the lighthouse . In reality the lighthouse had no studio.It was all shot on Set I can imagine having to walk up those steps. I don't have to imagine I have walked up steps like these . I would have asked for hazard pay🤣 I will still get it And compare the discs for lighting Quality. That's somehow is different from my 4k set I bought from the UK The only thing I can guess is the way the film is transferred to disc is in someway darker. This has nothing to do with the studios transfer of the film but more with the manufacturers process to the disc is darker. The setup is creating this darker disc than the US disc is??? I know it seems farfetched but its there. I noticed it with Escape From New York. The UK 4k disc version is darker. It maybe a simple solution of adjusting my theater settings . That's the most logical solution I can really see Good Video 😎

I like this movie more than Ken, but I can see why he and others would rank this movie low on the John Carpenter's Greatest Hits list. For me personally. I'm not a fan of "Big Trouble In Little China". But getting back to "The Fog", 2/3rd's of this movie is wonderful, but it just can't stick the landing. The film's biggest strengths is it's tone and atmosphere which I would guess is what keeps this Carpenter film on most people's radar. It may not be "Halloween" or "The Thing", but is not a forgettable movie. The Antonio Bay setting makes the film the cinematic cousin to such coastal town thrillers as "Dead & Buried", "Humanoids From The Deep", and even "Orca: The Killer Whale". And no, I didn't forget about "Jaws" but that's in a class all by itself.
Outside of a couple of scenes that seemed really dark, I thought it was a fantastic improvement over the BD Shout! released. The Dolby Atmos track was very immersive. I did find it odd to learn this release had reversible art when the others did not. Did The Fog have more than one poster or is this going to become soemthing new? As for the movie itself, it's probably my fifth or sixth favorite JC movie. My biggest issue is how Elizabeth was absolutely pointless as a character. It's why I've created this head cannon that she is really an on-the-run Laurie while Nick is actually Dr Chalise after losing his kids to Silver Shamrock and fleeing back to his childhood home under a new name.
You could say more if you didn't say everything so many times! A few minutes into this and you told us at least half a dozen times that you didn't personally care for it. ok ok ok... Every point you make, you make several times. It's annoying. To your point about your top 10 Carpenter films; it sounds like you haven't even seen 10 Carpenter films anyway. I'm continually surprised at what you DON'T know.

I gave thoughts on what I enjoyed about it. Last 30 minutes and opening are exciting, atmosphere is great. It's a well made movie that's not my favorite because the middle is a bore. 3.5 is a fair score for me.

the 44 minute behind scenes feature is new for the 4K release. Its not on the regular previous blu ray release or even on the Collectors Edition DVD

I'm sticking with the 2012 Blu because of the blue tint that I'm a fan of. The 4K removes that for a yellow tint.

Great atmosphere, creepy ghosts, but really it's only 2/3s of a movie.
