It’s usual to go to the church on Christmas evening too. The Christmas stocking is very usual here in Norway. It’s also tradition to go to the movie 2th day Christmas. And 1th day Christmas 25. We use to visit family.
Here in Norway we dont only have Farm santas, we also have the original Santa Claus. And many people are decorating the home long before 23 dec. So she is wrong about that!
This lady was wrong on so many points, she claimed Christmas was over the 25th. It is not, even if we get presents and have Christmas dinner on the 24th, the 25th, Cjhristmas Day is important to most. A lot of people that ususally don't go to mass, goes to mass in the church both the 24th and the 25th. Some churches are shocj full on these days. And there is the Christmas Day dinner, where people can have even bigger family parties and dinners. And on the 26th, people have leftovers from the dinners on the 24th and 25th. And after that, quite a lot go on to restaurants and bars, which are at their fullest on the 26 th. Some people even go up to the montains to go skiing and staying in their mountain cabins. I don't know anyone who trhrow out their christmas tree before january 6th, som even to january 13th. And then it is Santa Claus parties lasting from the 27 th until the 6 th of january, they could be for kids, or they could be for adults. There are always presents to the kids, like on the 24th, but this time, only one for each kid. Some adults also might get presents from their employer if their employer funds the Santa party. A lot of people dont work between 23rd of december until 2nd of january. They are paid in full by their employers to use their Christmas vacation.
About the marzipan and these things, they are produced pretty early so they ship it out early, thats atleast is the excuse the companies field. But traditionalists hate it and there is every year a debate about it. So there are these who just refuse to buy early ... and there are those who love to buy early.
Christmas is also at the same time as pagan Jule celebration the midwinter solice or what it is called. Norse people before christianity used to celebrate around 21st of December when the sun turn, it was a celebration and alot of the traditions we still have are from those times, christianity copied it to make it more attractive to become Christian. Julebukk is one of those traditions that comes from Norse ... Santa or Nissen is aparently based on Odin (allfather Odin the gods of gods) who protected us.
Christmas over on the 24th? No staying power 😝 The Swedes and Finns have various things in the itinerary until the 13th of January, St. Knut's Day, which is the formal end of the Christmas season (and just enough time to slim down again before Easter celebrations kick off). Yes, the main celebration is on the 24th, but in my family we'd always have a nice breakfast with all the good stuff on Christmas day. Christians would then go to yet another church service (we never did, as my family doesn't observe any religion). Another festive dinner in the evening. We usually do pinnekjøtt (salted and cured lamb ribs) on christmas eve, and ribbe (pork ribs) on Christmas day. Boxing day is for resting, before many return to work the remaining days until the new year celebration. The stores here close early on Christmas eve, and stay closed for Christmas day and boxing day (the 26th).
Odin the allfather, god of the norse and vikings, is kind of the origin of Santa Claus. He was said to ride through the night at christmas on his eight-legged horse Sleinir, in the midwinter nights sky, delivering gifts to those down below. Sound familiar? :) Also, Julebukk was more scary than halloween back then, the children dressed up in goat skulls and horns etc and went door to door trick or treating (kind of).
A bit simplified, but she's essentially right. As a Norwegian I've always found Brazilian Portuguese much easier to understand than European Portuguese. Perhaps because you speak it more clearly :)
