@6:00 "They are creating pressure (against the Swedes)! We are creating such a pressure that their hands are trembling, trembling like hands of a young lad in his first date, wanting to ask: "May I hold your hand?"!!!" Commentator Mertaranta is a wordsmith, shouting half the stuff with passion and weird and funny stuff like this he improvises in his fervor. It has been the same legendary commentator in these victories since that '95 victory.
You should watch a quick video about maybe the greatest goal in Finnish icehockey history. A reaction from 7 different commentators. "Mikael Granlund goal seen on seven telecasts IIHF 2011"
I was in a pub watching this game. The pub was absolutely packed, you couldn't even turn around without headbutting someone. So you may be able to imagine the mayhem during the last 10 minutes of the game. Let alone the finish, beer flying in the air, people hugging everyone around them, jumping, screaming their lungs out, tables falling. And then came the champagne, because the pub owner approved - nay, encouraged - all of that. Not much of the champagne got actually consumed, I got half a bottle poured on me by my mate, as you would see F1-drivers do on the podium. I don't know when or how I got home that night, but I did. The smell of my clothes was horrifying.. imagine a dried mixture of sweat, beer, cider, wine, long drinks and champagne. If my atrocious hangover didn't make me vomit, that would've. I visited the scene of the crime a couple days after. The floor was still a bit sticky. I had a chat with the owner, he told that a few tables and chairs got busted, pints and glasses and such. But fortunately nobody got hurt, despite all the broken glass. Cleaning of the floor, and the ceiling, and the walls, and the furniture was going to cost him quite a bit, and the free drinks he offered for an hour after the buzzer. In the end he just grinned and said "It was worth it."
You mentioned the excitement in the commentators voice. This is actually i have come to realize after i started to watch Premier League - british commentators are very chill comperatively to finnish ones, in football too. Finnish commentators, both in football an ice hockey, are also very poetic with their language. I swear i hear almost every game something new, phrases and methaphores i have never heard :D
I remember this victory because I was in Tanzania at the time, and that same summer I met my wife-to-be. She passed away 2021, but atleast I still have all the memories of her... and this victory.
I remember watching this in a bar which was normally closed on Sundays but opened for the final. After the game ended an announcement came out from the speakers saying "people PLEASE do not destroy the entire bar" because people were celebrating so wild(not actually destroying anything).
I'm afraid the Finnish ice hockey team has been an underdog in the finals time and again, but having a win against Sweden is pure bliss (win or lose against e.g. Canada doesn't evoke evoke such feelings) . One learns to savor the moments when things come together.
You should definitely check out the recent 2024 mens floorball championship final finland v. Sweden. What a crazy final. Theres also english commentary availevable for it i think
My memory of this game has a lot of do with only seeing the last period. During the weekend, I had visited a friend in Stockholm, and most of the game was played during my flight back to Helsinki, and the only thing I knew when I boarded was that Sweden was leading 1-0. Then I got home, and had the pleasure to watch us demolish the Swedish team. To be honest, I really felt sorry for the Swedish goalie, as in some goals, I felt that he was left totally alone by his defence. The worst example is the last goal, where the Swedish players just didn't do anything at all.
7:17 that was actually a purposeful pass off the boards. Granlund grew tired of everybody talking about his LaCrosse-goal in the previous Russia game (it even made it into a stamp, that's how crazy that got), and said this pass was his best performance of the tournament. Can't really disagree there.
React to "Hope dies last - suomi" ? Its a short emotional clip about the disappointments in ice hockey over and over again. It blew up at the time, because a year after it finland won for the first time in 16 years.
My friends TV was broken so we we're listening from the radio and when the goals started coming we started getting super excited and went running to the big screen in the center, but it was over when we got there and the party had started.
Youshould react to "Suomi U20 - Matka maailmanmestaruuteen 2016" it's about finland winning gold on home ice with one of the best U20 teams in the 2010's
In European ice-hokey, fighting is more harshly punished than in NHL. Although recent years, NHL has been cleaner. The north-Americans are starting to realize that ice-hockey is not boxing :D
We were in Riga, Latvia, with friends in an irish pub full of finns. Well, there was one table with swedish fans, but they left soon after they celebrated too early their first goal. And during the second break we did this: ua-cam.com/video/m3_czp0wHvw/v-deo.html It was one crazy night with the bar staff shaking their heads when finns celebrated.
2011 was great upcoming for couple young finnish players, like Mikael Granlund. Was no doubdt finns will beat sweden after this great goal ua-cam.com/video/Zaaf0xdg-Qk/v-deo.html
It was 16 years since last world championship. Yes game was already set but sometimes you just can't control those emotions. There's nothing wrong with that.
There was less than a minute to go. They were high on the streak and were already celebrating the win. The scorer obviously celebrated the goal, because you don't get that many chances to score in a WC final. And it wasn't like it was an empty net. Yes, the defense was miffed and didn't exactly give 110% but the goalie was there. If the goalie didn't try either, it was his own damn fault.

Antero is Mertaranta. :D
Ei Merterantaa rakkaampaa 😂😂😂
Pääjärvi is indeed a Finnish name. Magnus Pääjärvi uses that name because he has Finnish grandparents
Meaning that the only Swedish goal was made by a Finn... So was the game actually 7 - 0?
Kummeli's Heikki Silvennoinen passed away. He had some rare disease (idk what disease).
It's very sad day for Finnish culture.
You should watch a quick video about maybe the greatest goal in Finnish icehockey history. A reaction from 7 different commentators. "Mikael Granlund goal seen on seven telecasts IIHF 2011"
And to keep in mind that at that point it had been 16 years since our last championship... :')

Because most of the time they have to be unbiased, especially in league games.
Sure. But it doesnt mean one cant be excited about the game? =)
Murray Walker is the only one to even come close to Mertaranta.
Fun fact: the Swedish goalie Jesper Fasth was named best goalie of the tournament BEFORE the final…well, experts and jinxes…

Pääjärvi is a Finnish last name. The joke is, that Sweden managed to score only 1 goal and even that needed to be done by a Finn.
This was 2nd time when they win. Last time was in 95. So it was very needed and special.
Best of Antero Mertaranta, the Finnish commentator: ua-cam.com/video/124QecU6XHk/v-deo.html

After match they asked Swedish player, when you knew you lost the match, answer was after first period, when we had 1-0 lead

One thing I remember from this is… TORI!
This was a total annhilation. Usually gold medal games have only a one goal difference and often the games require an overtime

I see my Finnish brothers got here before me. I have nothing more to add than "Torilla Tavataan"
luckily i had so bad hangover i woke up on the end of 2nd period.
I was 8 years old, dont remember much about this one
Finnish beer company Karjala made a 6-1 beer in 2011
Number 1 - 6 became a thing, tou could see people wearing shirts with 1-6... :)

I dont like that they celebrate that 6-1 goal. Theres nothing to celebrate in that goal. Game was already set, so no reason to celebrate that goal.

"Magnus Paadzarvi (Paadtsarvi)? That sounds like finnish name."
Not even close
Pääjärvi, he is Magnus Svensson Pääjärvi, but uses just his Finnish grandpa's name from his mother's side on his play shirt to honor him.
Pääjärvi is Finnish name
