    Great work, Michael. I hope the frost didn’t bite your nose while you were recording this.
    I have sometimes wondered if “Who Goes There?” by John Campbell, Jr. has a connection or influence from “At the Mountains of Madness”. Love both of those stories.
    Have you ever played the Arkham Horror or Eldritch Horror board games?
    Best, Jack

      I wonder about that too. Despite the setting and the alien, Who Goes There felt like a very different story to me.
      I never played that game, only because I don’t know anyone I could talk into playing it with me!

      @@michaelk.vaughan8617 Depending on what you read or talk to who follows this genre Dr. William Dyer was, in fact, Prof. William Harper Littlejohn, and though John W said no it is a neat idea McCready was known by another name Dr. Clark Savage Jr.

    TEKALEEELEEEEEEEEE!
    This story is indeed important -- but it's never been one of my favourite Lovecraft tales. I think it's just that I don't really like the way the history of the Elder ones is told. It's tthis etached sort of info dump and it feels like a great deal was gleaned from those wall reliefs that could only have been guessed at. Still, I *do* agree that there are great concepts in here, and I like it when HP goes deeper into the strange societies implicated in some other stories -- not just horror but actaul exploration of a science fictional character. I feel like this was the way he was heading with his later stories. I also wonder if this is linked with what I have read in terms of a general decrease in HP's xe3nophobia in the 1930s. I haven't found much first-hand evidence for this (in terms of what HP actually said) but it's kind of nice to think he mellowed out in his later years, if anything for his own sake, and of course it'd be a good demonstration that people can indeed change.
    Anyway, I've been enjoying the channel over the last couple of days and listening to your talks on some really great books, after Plagued by Visions gave you a shout-out. it'sa definite pleasure to subscribe!

      Thank you so much. You are certainly right about the information gleaned from the wall reliefs. Even H. P. L. Knew it, so he added that bit about much of the information being teased out later. Still, despite its shortcomings, I love this story.
      So glad you enjoy my little channel. I appreciate your support!

    LOL. You're killin' me, smalls! Are there mountains on Antarctica?

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617
      @michaelk.vaughan8617  3 роки тому +4

      Yes, the Transantarctic Mountain 🏔 range. Oddly enough the Mountains of Madness are not mentioned anywhere but in this story. Probably to keep humanity from going insane. Thanks so much for watching!

    I definitely should not have started with the Mountains - I blame stupid Amazon for the bad order they put the stories in. I think I'm going to give it a reread after seeing this, I really got buried a bit in the complex language and lost the thread of the story a few times.

      This story has an incredible amount of technical jargon. And of course Amazon is SO stupid. Thanks so much for watching!

    Prometheus directed by Ripley Scott is very similar to this story. Its almost a loosely based adaptation but no one will actknowlege that. Just changed Antarctica for a different planet and its very similar. Ripley Scott rip off HP Lovecraft. Did you think of that when if you've seen that film?
