A little insight in to Roger Waters the writer of the Wall:
      2nd Lt Eric Fletcher Waters
"He was born in 1913 in Surrey, England.
During World War II, he was an officer of the 8th Royal Fusiliers. He died in Anzio,
Italy, during Operation Shingle or The Battle of Anzio; declared missing or presumed dead
on February 18, 1944. He and his wife Mary had two sons, the younger being Roger Waters,
cofounder, bassist and songwriter for the rock band Pink Floyd. Eric Waters died when
son Roger was only five months old, but many of Roger Waters' albums and songs reference
the evils of war and his father's death as a result of it. The 1983 Pink Floyd album
'The Final Cut' was written entirely by Roger Waters and dedicated to the father that he
      never knew."
"And that's how the High Command took my daddy from me!"

"The Wall" tells the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star. As told through the song "Mother", part of Pink's sense of alienation comes from being raised by an overprotective single mother, who lost her husband, Pink's father, in World War II. The song narrates a conversation by Pink (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour). The listener learns of the over-protectiveness of Pink's mother, who is helping Pink build his wall to try to protect him from the outside world, evidenced by the line spoken by Pink's mother. She insists that Pink stay by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love.

    • @colinbrash
      @colinbrash 3 роки тому +4

Every mother - every parent - does the best they know how. As a parent now this song sounds so different to me than it did as a teenager. I feel for the mother who has less choice in how she raises her child than I ever realized. And I know I can only raise my child based on how I learned. It’s both scary and freeing in some way.
The incredible thing about this song, and the whole album, is that it captures both the sad reality of why others with power act a certain way, and also the horrible effect it has on those impacted.
It’s not a simple one sided story. Maybe this is why it resonated with so many people and lasted as a masterpiece in ways the current dance anthems never will.

Wow! Not only am I impressed that you did this song but that you also understand the meaning and symbolism. This is great song and can stand alone but is so much better when taken in context with the rest of the album. I was too young to go to concerts when this originally came out but I've seen Roger Waters do The Wall twice and it was beyond belief how amazing it was! I cried during Mother. Not because I have mommy issues or anything 😁, but because I couldn't believe I was finally experiencing it live. Such a beautiful song!

David Gilmore, Live from Gdańsk, Fat Old Sun. It’s old Pink Floyd with a kick ass guitar solo.

My father once said to me:
(You can't choose your parents and family, but you can and you should choose your friends.
If you don't, one day you may have to isolate yourself behind a wall to protect yourself from them.)

It's a paradox; a parent who is overprotective, but at the same time is emotionally inaccessible.

British baby boomers (Born right after the war) describe their parents just that way. Overprotective but inaccessible. That war was very traumatic for that generation and it effected their parenting. Probably effected everything they did after that war.

I think one of the great lines in this song is “Mother is gonna put all of her fears into you”. A statement on the influence parents of on a child’s psychological perspective. I have tremendous respect for Roger Waters. Thank you Jamel

Every parent struggles with this at one time or another. i grew up in the 60s/70s in an area that wasn't over populated and times where a little different. @jamel I love the reactions... you've done a ton and i love them all. Keep'em coming my friend. Peace and love.

And they even manage to make him turn out even worse than Bates, by some measures. After all, he becomes a fascist dictator.
