He died in Anzio, Italy, during Operation Shingle or The Battle of Anzio; declared missing or presumed dead on February 18, 1944. He and his wife Mary had two sons, the younger being Roger Waters, cofounder, bassist and songwriter for the rock band Pink Floyd. Eric Waters died when son Roger was only five months old, but many of Roger Waters' albums and songs reference the evils of war and his father's death as a result of it. "The Wall" tells the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star. As told through the song "Mother", part of Pink's sense of alienation comes from being raised by an overprotective single mother, who lost her husband, Pink's father, in World War II. The song narrates a conversation by Pink (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour). The listener learns of the over-protectiveness of Pink's mother, who is helping Pink build his wall to try to protect him from the outside world, evidenced by the line spoken by Pink's mother. She insists that Pink stay by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love.
People are saying it and you already mentioned you were sent the album and movie. You seriously need to take an afternoon and hit the whole thing in one sitting. Honestly the most powerfully emotional album ever made. Keep it up brother!

Pink Floyd just ooze's Talent ! I was 14 years old when The Wall came out, I had never heard of Pink Floyd at that time, I was into KISS at that age. Then my late Mother, R.I.P. bought me the Album The Wall for Christmas. And the rest is History, I have been a Huge Fan of Pink Floyd ever since. I have seen them twice in Concert, how many people can say that ? I may be old, but I got to see all the Cool Bands back in the day !!
When my 2 cousins were young when they came to my house they always wanted to hear Goodbye Blue Sky all the time. They had good taste. It’s one of my favorites from that album.
Man this music just never ceases to give me the intense feels. Right back to high school feeling all that teen angst and frustration and emotional pain. But in such a beautiful way.
This song. This song. Along with "Comfortably Numb" guaranteed to bring a tear to my eyes. Such haunting anguish fear and confusion. Mr. Waters at his finest. "Mother did it need to be so high...." Thanks mom.
"The Wall" has got to be my all-time favorite album. My wife thinks it's creepy, but I absolutely love it. Powerful isn't nearly strong enough of a word to describe it. I still get emotional hearing it and I've probably listened to it a thousand times.
Every mother - every parent - does the best they know how. As a parent now this song sounds so different to me than it did as a teenager. I feel for the mother who has less choice in how she raises her child than I ever realized. And I know I can only raise my child based on how I learned. It’s both scary and freeing in some way. The incredible thing about this song, and the whole album, is that it captures both the sad reality of why others with power act a certain way, and also the horrible effect it has on those impacted. It’s not a simple one sided story. Maybe this is why it resonated with so many people and lasted as a masterpiece in ways the current dance anthems never will.
Awesome song, makes me tear up every time I listen. This album needs to be heard all at the same time. Have you ever thought of doing a whole album? This would be a good 1st choice. 😊
There is not a band that has ever existed that will take you on the emotional ride that Pink Floyd can do. I've heard all their albums dozens of times and when you play the whole thing from beginning to end, as you should, it truly is a journey. I still get chills and misty eyed when some of their songs just hit right. Love you man, keep doing your thing.
Its such a weird experience to see you listen to music for the first time that I first heard more than 40 years ago. I heard some of it so much that I almost got tired of it, but hearing it along with you, is almost like a first time for me again. Thank you for allowing me to see some of this great music with fresh eyes. I almost forgot how great it was!
I'm gonna echo all the people here who say you really need to watch the movie. It ties everything together and lets you see the entire story. Plus, it's a really good movie.
If you have the opportunity, I'd recommend listening to the whole "The Wall" record from start to finish w/ headphones on. It's a very heavy story. The movie does a solid job of interpreting it.
its a completely different experience when you listen to any of their albums from start to finish and on a format that doesn't have pauses in-between the songs... Put on some headphones and you wont open your eyes for the next hour or so!
You really need to watch the movie, it will give you perspective on all of these songs... It is a must watch... I've seen it dozens of times and never tire of it...
I think one of the great lines in this song is “Mother is gonna put all of her fears into you”. A statement on the influence parents of on a child’s psychological perspective. I have tremendous respect for Roger Waters. Thank you Jamel ✌️
My most memorable time with this song was with my boys at age ~5 & 6. While making spaghetti sauce, one of my sons turned and said "he sure talks to his mom a lot". 😅
I just listened to this with my 5 year old right next to me watching his UA-cam cartoons. I muted it momentarily at the "will they break my balls" part since it's a bit early for that expression to enter his vocabulary.
My husband saw a Roger Waters’ entire performance of “The Wall” in concert at the Berlin Wall not long after it was torn down. He said it was a once in a lifetime experience. I was fortunate to see the group Pink Floyd in concert before they broke up so we both enjoyed their performances
True story. When I was like 18 or 19; I decided to play this song for my mom, as to get her restroom to it. She sat in her chair; reading the lyrics, and listening quietly. When the song was over; she handed me back the lyrics, and only said "Yes". That's it; just yes. Nothing more.
Wow! Not only am I impressed that you did this song but that you also understand the meaning and symbolism. This is great song and can stand alone but is so much better when taken in context with the rest of the album. I was too young to go to concerts when this originally came out but I've seen Roger Waters do The Wall twice and it was beyond belief how amazing it was! I cried during Mother. Not because I have mommy issues or anything 😁, but because I couldn't believe I was finally experiencing it live. Such a beautiful song!

DUDE. I’ve been listening to this song for almost 30 years and I never realized what the last line meant. “Mother did it need to be so high?” is referring to the wall. It seems so obvious now, but I always thought it was referring to getting high cause Pink is so messed up throughout the whole movie “The Wall”. I was overthinking it. THANK YOU for clarifying!
I thought that line meant high as in getting high too , though i wasnt so sure , in fact i thought my poor sense of english was a factor in my misinterpreting it until i read your comment so two things; first jamal cracked it for me regarding meaning and second i wasnt alone in getting it twisted ( the way a nonnative got O.L.meanings wrong) after all
You need to listen to the whole album in order for it to really make sense. Members of Pink Floyd were all affected by their lives in post WWII England. The songs reflect a lot of that trauma.
And this is why Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands of all time. How deep they can go is mind boggling. Anything that can make a soul feel to this degree is pure genius.

So many layers of sound. guitar. bass. vocals. keyboard. Drums. life
"The Wall" tells the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star.
@MrMustangMan Excellent summarization.
The album is mostly about Syd Barret. It is also about Roger as well, especially about the dad being in war.
Very astute observation...
People are saying it and you already mentioned you were sent the album and movie. You seriously need to take an afternoon and hit the whole thing in one sitting. Honestly the most powerfully emotional album ever made. Keep it up brother!
Too many Mothers keeping their babies cozy and warm. And then you find 10 years have gone behind you. No one told you when to run, You missed the staring gun.
Right. Roger Waters wrote about many of the same themes over the years.
RIGHT ON.
This is my mother. I played this for her in 1980 and she didn't see the similarities lol.
But she's 82 now and I'm blessed to have her. And cursed.
I hope she makes it to 100
Gilmore’s guitar playing on here is spine tingling. As far as music/lyrics speaking to the soul, this song goes deep....the visuals on this song (from the movie)are powerful as well.
I thought it was Waters. I remember somebody refused to play guitar on this song because of the extra 8th note on the end of each line
My grandma passed a few months before I was born. My father and uncle would sing this to her (it was her favorite song) as she was on her deathbed. This song has a deep and special meaning to my family. Always will.
He was young when the bombs were dropping on England during WW II grow up in bomb out cities his father did not come back from the war, like many others .....
It's Pink Floyd, you have to listen to the whole album. Especially The Wall.
He knows this
Not necessarily possible with what he does.. we went through this talking about DSOTM when he was doin songs off that
I'll second this
From beginning to end, several times over, for the rest of your life.
Might help to watch the movie a time or two as well...
I appreciate you and all you have done during the covid-19.
This cannot be upvoted enough, he's been like a balm to soothe the troubled soul this year!
Thank you for sharing. 🌺💚☮️✌🏻🌱
Love when David Gilmour comes in. Was following Pink Floyd when this came out.
R.I.P. Syd Barrett.🌺🕊. Shine on you crazy diamond. R.I.P. Rick Wright 🌺🕊
Jamal, I really like your attitude towards people. It speaks the larger truth.
This song always makes me teary eyed. Incredible song, one of my favorite PF songs.
Brought to you by the greatest songwriter and the greatest progressive rock guitarist in the world.
This song. This song. Along with "Comfortably Numb" guaranteed to bring a tear to my eyes.
Such haunting anguish fear and confusion. Mr. Waters at his finest.
"Mother did it need to be so high...."
Thanks mom.
OMG if he does "comfortably numb" I'll lose it😥
@@s.l.s.l.1405 He already did...about a year ago; the live "Pulse" version.

"The Wall" has got to be my all-time favorite album. My wife thinks it's creepy, but I absolutely love it. Powerful isn't nearly strong enough of a word to describe it. I still get emotional hearing it and I've probably listened to it a thousand times.
It's been my all time favorite since the first time I really sat down and listened to it. Just an amazing piece of art.
I recommend a divorce. 💁
Definitely in my top 10 all-time. Maybe top 5.
The Wall is the greatest Album of all time in my book and was a big influence for me in my 20's. I believe it is the genius of Roger Waters.
I honestly don’t find it creepy i just find it depressing but that’s not a bad thing at all.
"There's a lot of metaphors in here" that's an understatement
Seems accurate to me.
Well, just one, really.
The only metaphor is "The Wall." Everything else is pretty literal.
The "WALL" is the only Metaphor for Roger Syd Barrett's mental Illness.
@@aderi31415 yes - exactly
Pink Floyd was another gift to me by my older sibs. I grew up with a huge love of music.
Very underrated song on a Philosophical Level!!!! So many questions about life with not as many answers!
Being the mother of a little boy, this song makes me sob.
Make sure that he feels loved but don't smother him. The boy needs to live in order to find himself.
All due respect, this isn't a tribute or song of appreciation. Don't be like this mother.... she ruins him.
@@erikolson4056 I don't think either of us thought this was an appreciation song. That being said, as a mom, you 100% get being overprotective.
Awesome song, makes me tear up every time I listen. This album needs to be heard all at the same time. Have you ever thought of doing a whole album? This would be a good 1st choice. 😊
A long one
This song brings out just as much emotion as Wish You We’re Here by Floyd. Makes me cry how beautiful it is
There is not a band that has ever existed that will take you on the emotional ride that Pink Floyd can do. I've heard all their albums dozens of times and when you play the whole thing from beginning to end, as you should, it truly is a journey. I still get chills and misty eyed when some of their songs just hit right. Love you man, keep doing your thing.
I dedicate this song to my mom every mothers day. Thank you mom for helping me build the wall.
I like how Jamel talks about when singers close their eyes and he's doing it himself here
really need to watch the whole movie, and these songs go together in an epic way
I love that all this music I grew up with, lived on ,he gets it! The blues, the rock, all of it. Its a beautiful thing!
You really need to watch the movie, Pink Floyd, The wall, it explains the entire album to include this song.
This is an album that really needs to be listened to in order from beginning to end... it is a concept album
ABSOLUTELY - Just like their album ANIMALS which is a VERY close second for my favorite Pink Floyd concept album!
😉
All of their albums really are long form stories.
its a completely different experience when you listen to any of their albums from start to finish and on a format that doesn't have pauses in-between the songs... Put on some headphones and you wont open your eyes for the next hour or so!
Yes
And listen to it on vinyl, with the intentional pauses between sides.
You really need to watch the movie, it will give you perspective on all of these songs... It is a must watch... I've seen it dozens of times and never tire of it...
"She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing" reminds me of a bird in a cage.
"She won't let you fly, but she might let you SINK not SING
@@godslayer1415 I stand corrected.
@@mdunawaym It is "sing" - you were/are correct. You only need to look at the liner notes/lyrics on the album.

Jamel, Thank you for bringing this great music to the forefront again.. Appreciate you man, the world is a better place with you in it!
I think one of the great lines in this song is “Mother is gonna put all of her fears into you”. A statement on the influence parents of on a child’s psychological perspective. I have tremendous respect for Roger Waters. Thank you Jamel
✌️
Loved Floyd since I was seven years old! I’ve seen Rodger Waters three times! Love this!! 🥰
I LOVE YOUR REACTION,,AND YOUR WISE,,,WORDS,,,,,THANK YOU,,,,SOME TIMES YOU WAKE ME UP,,,,,,
FYI: Mother lost her husband, her son's father, in the war.
SUPER REACTION
This is a deep, dark song. It changed my life learning and understanding my mom
My most memorable time with this song was with my boys at age ~5 & 6. While making spaghetti sauce, one of my sons turned and said "he sure talks to his mom a lot". 😅
😂🤣😂 I’m the mom of 2 boys💕
I just listened to this with my 5 year old right next to me watching his UA-cam cartoons. I muted it momentarily at the "will they break my balls" part since it's a bit early for that expression to enter his vocabulary.
For a kid who lost his mother when he was 13 and had this come out when he was 17, can you say "impact". Fantastic read Jamel. Thank you.
You are soo good. Thank you..
My husband saw a Roger Waters’ entire performance of “The Wall” in concert at the Berlin Wall not long after it was torn down. He said it was a once in a lifetime experience. I was fortunate to see the group Pink Floyd in concert before they broke up so we both enjoyed their performances
With Jeff Porcaro from Toto on drums.
Wow, he has been featured on so many recordings.
Ah oui!
Merci je ne savais pas ça.
I'm so sorry today's generation has crap for music.
Thanks, dude, for bringing this real music back!
That's not entirely true. There's great music out there. It's just not on the mainstream. You gotta find it.
@@danbardos3498 funny. Back in the day all you had to do was turn on the radio.
You hit the nail on the head, Jamel. Great interpretation of a great song.
This is the greatest lullaby ever sung and that guitar is magical to no end a masterpiece of what is music.
True story. When I was like 18 or 19; I decided to play this song for my mom, as to get her restroom to it. She sat in her chair; reading the lyrics, and listening quietly. When the song was over; she handed me back the lyrics, and only said "Yes".
That's it; just yes. Nothing more.
"Look mummy, there's another plane up in the sky..."
Actually the lyrics are look Mommy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky
Just found out that was Water's son who said that. He was very young at the time.

Brutal song about the power parents have over their children.
Brutal in topic and in honesty, beautiful in tone and execution. It is a strangely soothing song.
particularly mothers over sons
Every parent struggles with this at one time or another. i grew up in the 60s/70s in an area that wasn't over populated and times where a little different. @jamel I love the reactions... you've done a ton and i love them all. Keep'em coming my friend. Peace and love.

Wow 30 years later and some guy on youtube tells me what that line means. Heavy..
Wow I also never referred the meaning of the part as the Momma did it need to be so high, as the wall. Heavy stuff.
🙌
Im with you on that 1 fella.....
I thought that line meant high as in getting high too , though i wasnt so sure , in fact i thought my poor sense of english was a factor in my misinterpreting it until i read your comment so two things; first jamal cracked it
for me regarding meaning and second i wasnt alone in getting it twisted ( the way a nonnative got O.L.meanings wrong) after all
You need to listen to the whole album in order for it to really make sense. Members of Pink Floyd were all affected by their lives in post WWII England. The songs reflect a lot of that trauma.
Now Shine on you crazy diamond parts 6-9 or brain damage-eclipse!
He did Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
And this is why Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands of all time. How deep they can go is mind boggling. Anything that can make a soul feel to this degree is pure genius.
One of my most favorite Pink Floyd songs ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You don't need to see the movie to understand his song. He understands it.
No but it does help to get an understanding of the whole idea of The Wall.

This song strikes a chord in me. I won't get into it, but there's a lot in these lyrics that I identify with.
Regarding Pink (the protagonist of the album), Mother's lasting influence on him can be found in "Nobody Home", also from The Wall.
