You’d be amazed at how many reactors think this IS a “mama appreciation” song, and don’t get the overprotection angle at all. Thanks for really listening. Tough tune, and I totally agree about the guitar solo - it’s the only place in the whole song in 4/4, where the music is allowed to groove and soar above the “wall.” It almost physically hurts to be constrained again when the solo is done. Masterpiece of writing.

Mother is just one brick in the emotional wall he built around himself. Other songs on the album reveal others such as his fathers death, abusive teachers, drugs, fame and an unfaithful wife. His struggles with phychosis and emotional detachment lead to a climax of tearing down the wall. The movie "The Wall" is a must see.

Perfect interpretation. That's Roger Waters asking the questions - the lyricist of the band who lost his father in World War ll. When you hear the emotion in his voice when he asks "mother will they put me in the firing line?" you better believe it comes from the heart.
    Great reaction. 👍

Pink Floyd is a super interesting band. Many of their albums and songs have deep meaning both personally and politically. Then you weave in the unique instrumentals and that guitar!
The original singer and songwriter Syd Barrett had huge mental health problems, he was diagnosed schizophrenic. After leaving the band you’ll notice a lot of Pink Floyd songs have a mental health theme in them.

Dunno how many times a large group of us would smoke a great deal of that illicit weed then pile in our respective cars and go see the shitty '80s "laser show" to "The Wall" snow, rain, sunshine, so many times.that was one hell on an album and one hell of an era to grow up in. Floyd, an emotional journey guaranteed, no matter which symphonic song you choose. They are all gold and they are ROCK GODS! Heres to hoping you listen to the whole album. I remember my choir teacher even made a special effort to allow us to learn and sng "We Don't Need No Education" for an assembly when it first came out, we really figured she was a little bit of a safer haven when we needed to turn somewhere in tough times, she showed us she really gave a shit, she was there because she wanted to be and we mattered, sounds corny, but it was really cool when you were 12. Obviously the dope smokin' came a few years later. So glad, as so many others have said, that you actually got the real meaning of it, a smothering, mindl-warping, controlling Mother. Enjoy your Floyd experience.

  • @jonhenke1504

The gist of the song is the boy's father was killed in world War II when he was only 6 months old. So now he's being raised by a single mother who is being overprotective mostly because of the situation! She won't let you fly but she might let you sing! That along with putting her fears into the child shows why she's overprotective!
And the very last line "why did it have to be so high"? He's talking about the metaphorical wall he built around himself because of being raised by an overprotective mother!!

Forget the fictional character Pink......this is Rogers autobiography set to music.

He was only 5 months old when he lost his father at Anzio, in Italy.

You don't have to react to it but you need to listen to Pink Floyd The Wall the whole album front to back😊

At some point in time you really should do the whole entire Wall album. The whole thing tells a story of Rodger Waters life. It is one of the most vulnerable pieces of art that have come out in decades.
