- As part of 'The White Ox’ Desert Tracks’ series, we are very pleased to bring you The Simpson Desert - In The Footsteps Of C. T. Madigan.
A definitive history of this fascinating place, the traditional lands of the Arunta and Wangkangurru people.
We trace the early European explorers in the area and then follow the route of Dr. Cecil Madigan’s 1939 expedition.
All the while having a load of fun along the way!
As ever The White Ox aims to be entertaining AND informative!

Top marks to you and your associates for the presentation and compiling this video. Its good to see someone thinking differently and presenting quality informative videos. My 4wd/outback heroes growing up were Jack Absalom and Les Hiddins.
I hope this film is worthy of their legacy.
Your narrative around what it is that brings you back to the Simpson Desert is spot on; it is a very humbling place that definetly brings solitude. I've been double crossing the desert since 2012, bar COVID, and I can't get enough, I feel it's in my blood. Love your videos, nice job on presenting the whole experience. Thanks.

@@thewhiteoxoverland Not more than anyone, I know people that have crossed it many more times than me, I have nothing but respect for them; one still rides across the desert at aged 74 and he's a great mate of mine.

The White Ox has no intention of dropping the standard, it does mean that it takes much longer to put together a film like this than your typical 4wd content as there is a lot of research that goes into it.
But we still like to have a bit of fun along the way, after all that's why we do it!
The next film we believe will be another fascinating story that many people will be unaware of. All I will say is the subject of the next film we believe, is by far the greatest of all the early explorers!
The tag line for the channel is entertaining and informative. And that's what we strive to be. Never just one or the other, but hopefully both!
Keep up the awesome work. Your videos are way more informative and interesting than the others made by all those self proclaimed 4wd experts, Influencers etc and capture the essence of what 4wd Overlanding is all about. And a well setup Troopie is the perfect overlanding vehicle.

Your incredible content has made me very excited to drive the Simpson track with the information you have given us wil make alot more interesting and way more understanding where we are and how difficult it was for pioneers and how the abariganal people lived in such a hush landscape which gives me a compelling sence of how they survived the conditions makes me feel very privileged to live and experience this country thank you for your history lesson that all Australians need to no keep them coming mate

As you can probably tell from the clothing, it was fairly cold at times. Even during the height of the day.
It did warm up a bit towards Birdsville, but overall, from my experience, this was unusually cold (and wet!) for this time of year.
I've been to the Simpson many times before quite often at a similar time of year and have found the temperature quite warm both day and night.
It just goes to show.
Nothing silly about solitude, it's a critical part of our journey to keep in touch with our higher selves. Otherwise we are just meaningless organisms

Absolutely.
It is going to be a future film. The Canning is a fantastic adventure and a stunning environment but also has a dark history that needs to be told.
We are doing a Madigan crossing in July/August of this year (2024) and this is by far the best account of that crossing we have seen by far. Thank you for sharing this, it is absolutely invaluable. One question if i may, while we aren't expecting the water you guys experienced, one can never be sure and i was curious as to whether you tackled those harder washed out sections in high or low range. Thank you in advance!

Yes, you wouldn't normally expect that kind of water in the desert, but one must be prepared for anything out there!
I must admit I would have probably tuned back if I had been in my own, but the safety of two or more vehicles is invaluable in conditions like that.
For those conditions, I always like the torque and flexibility that you get in low range. But of course, you also want a bit of momentum. My truck is an underpowered 1HZ, so I usually go for low range second, keeping the revs right up(3000-3500). That way, if I start to bog down the ratios will generally allow me to keep pushing.
Brad's vehicle is the V8, so with far more power and torque than a N/A 1HZ, he generally preferred low 3rd and didn't need to run his engine rpm as high.
But low range is the ticket.

We are in our 09 DMAX 4jj1 (owned and loved from new) which probably sits roughly somewhere in between your 2 vehicles power wise. We have done quite a lot of short and long distance travel, but watching your videos certainly made me think about how to tackle that. Although being on our own i think there would be serious consideration to turning back, dependingon fuel of course. Thanks so much again and happy travels!

I don't think it would be a good idea to drive that sort of thing solo.
Having said that, turning back was not an option for us. I have an extra long-range triple fuel tank set up on the The White Ox, but Brad and Jane were limited by their standard factory twin tanks...
So in the end, I don't think we could have turned back even if we'd wanted to.
There's definitely a point of no return in many of these expeditions!
But we played it cautiously and relied on our big collective bucket of off-road experience to see us through.
@@thewhiteoxoverland ❤ Yes, and that's where the importance of being completely prepared comes in...knowing that point of no return, trying to undestand what's potentially ahead and making the correct decision at the time. I was doing final fuel numbers for the Colson/Madigan/Birdsville leg yesterday and decided the 180lt's (120 fuel tank plus jerry's) leaves us with 18lt's approx...cutting it a little fine for my liking, especially if we hit boggy conditions so plan on taking an additional jerry and just emptying them at every opportunity to get weight distribution through the Simpson.

And ultimate preparation.
I've been doing this a long time.
But at the end of the day, worst case would be:
not enough fuel reserves to turn back..... too wet to continue safely........
The only options is wait it out.......
Then........
1. Do you have enough supply of food and water?
2. Will you run out of electrical power?
3. Can you make contact with people to let them know your situation?
Etc etc.
Of course, we can't prepare for every possible eventuality, but at the same time, every expedition needs to have a contingency plan.
And if your contingency plan is to halt the proceedings and wait for more favourable conditions, then you'll need to be sure that you have the ability to remain put for at least a week or more.

It looked like staying on the track, through the water worked. I'm curious, whether you dropped your tyre pressures further. If you don't mind sharing (were heading to cross the Madigan soon!), what were your tyre pressures? Cheers

I usually run fairly low pressures in terrain like this. I think as low as 12 front and maybe 14-16 rear. It's less about pressures and more about 'footprint though. I find with the type of tyre I'm using and the weight of the vehicle etc, those pressures give me the nice long footprint that is desirable in sandy conditions and which is needed for flotation especially when the vehicle is heavy and underpowered. (1HZ N/A troopy)

It comes down to experience I suppose and knowing your vehicle.
I also generally tackle stuff like this in low 2nd . Keeping the revs up.
That gives me the power and torque and momentum I need for most situations with the combination of engine/transmission/ gvm that I have. If I can't make it through in 2nd low at 3500rpm then I'm looking for an alternative pathway.

I think this is part of the fun of 4wding, besides, as you said so well just 'being' in nature in the expansiveness of Australia's beauty, alone, is truly magic! @@BobCoulthurst Yes for sure! I think it was a combination of experience, knowing the vehicle, and my excellent travel companions, that gave me the confidence to keep going. Turning back really wasn't an option so it just came down to being smart, proceeding as cautiously as possible, and minimising any unnecessary risks.
