Regarding tackling Big Red, another proof that having the correct tyre pressures does wonders. You don't need "full send" every time. Well done to Elsie for making it up without ripping up the track. ✊👍 Thanks for the full disclosure and info. Very helpful.
Fantastic episode, loved this series! Thanks heaps guys, love your work. Can’t wait for canning stock, would love to come with!
As usual great vlog.Brought back some great memory’s . Did the Simpson 30 odd years ago in a 1976 petrol shorty forty , shod with retread bar treads . Went with a club group that had the latest then new Toyota’s . They drove to fast , wrong tyre pressures , overloaded etc etc. Sounds like not much has changed . Incidentally the only 4wd that did not brake down or get stuck regularly , was the 40 . Keep up the good work . Cheers guys
Haha there you go! I think if Elsie lost 200-300kgs she would really be unstoppable
You guys make a great team!! Great series too!! 👍
Great update of the Simpson trip guys, good to know those stats! I’ll hopefully get back up there next year 🤞🤙
Great round up guys!! Love the tips and info, really want to do it myself now too:) Thanks again, Matt.
No worries glad it was helpful!
What a great vid, brilliant info and I genuinely felt your enjoyment re-telling your journey. I’m a keen motorcyclist and really appreciated all your info cus it’s useful for all who venture the Simpson. Thanks for taking the time and safe travels 😎
What a great story. It was like you were interviewing each other about the trip and having a great conversation that we were privy to. I really enjoyed this episode and hope you contributed greatly to the Birdsville economy that night.
Cheers! That was the intention with it so we're glad it came across like that.
Hi All.
It’s roughly 850 km from Alice to Birdsville if you go via Santa Teresa. Going via Finke is heaps longer.
Your storage set-up and fridge moving shows the importance of having them bolted/strapped down.
I'm actually very surprised that you had them sitting loose.
Great wrap up, very interesting. The crankshaft mechanical advantage of a longer stroke 6 cylinder, is far better for those conditions than the shorter stroke V8 as was well proven in this case. Archimedes principles are alive and well !!!!. Thanks for sharing, take care, cheers.
Yeah it was interesting comparing the vehicles. That 79 was a dream to drive though…. Great for punching out the big kms :)
Prepare, prepare, prepare. And then prepare some more. No doubt I'll be watching this again before my trip there in 2022. Well done guys.
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid guys, and thanks for the honesty.
No worries as I said I really did feel stupid but if it stops someone doing the same thing then that’s a win
the 1 thing i find in the outback ..... the scenery never changes .... but is always different. ... every dune, every bend, every day. ..... it is always beautiful.
Couldn’t have set it better myself.
G'day team,3legends loved the series keep'em coming.Thanks...
Awesome guys loved the trip. Thanks for all the info and great shots of the desert
No worries cheers for the comments every week :)
Great video guys, thanks for the straight up honest info 👍🏻
Cheers mate hope it was helpful
We did it last yr in our ranger with 140 ltr tank and had fuel enough from Fink as our last fuel broke a cv half way across and did the rest in 2wd to birdsville
Drove the QAA Birdsvile to Eyre creek and back last year in half a day, we didn't go for the corner and back as it was a long day, and it had rained so the mud out to the corner wouldn't have been possible. In a modern 4wd (prado), with the exception of the hard line up big red where you need to give it more boot, 2nd gear, 2000-3000 revs, you will get over everything. The hardest dune on the QAA westbound is the one after big red, they get smaller from there.
You don't need speed for momentum. Good throttle control, low tire pressure (10-12 PSI) and the QAA is a walk in the park
Yeah I agree just low pressures decent revs in a low gear and you’re good to go
Fantastic guy's, so happy to see an older truck do that run, the mighty troopy is alive and well, love the drone shots of the desert 🏜 can you talk about the spares you bought with you, that would be interesting 😀, cheers 🍺, rick in Perth, Australia 🇦🇺.
Outstanding series. Really enjoyable to watch and beautiful to behold.
Awesome trip great footage 3 really nice people
Great information guys! cheers legends
11.3L / 100 average between mt. Dare and Birdsville along the Madigan in a 4.2tonne 79. Most in 4wd low. 2wd will not save you any fuel in sand.
It seems like a lot of fuel per 100km but breaking it down litres per hour of engine use, it actually seems pretty good. That's what I used to tell myself when I had my TB42 Carby Patrol
Great video and series. Honesty = Credibility and that is why ASPW 4Xoverland is so popular.
So while there is always someone that will come out of the woodwork to criticise I say well done.
This one has got me keen to delve into the back catalogue so now I’m watching Elsie from inception, very familiar territory!
Cheers mate :) the way I see it is doing a few hundred thousand kms over 3 years around Aus and filming it we’re bound to do something stupid 😅 I’ll tell people in the hope that people don’t make the same mistake.
You missed out on the rocks and corro's around Mt Dare and Dalhousie too. 😊
We couldn’t go because of boarder restrictions
good one, bring on the canning!
That was excellent. Thank you for all the information. A great help for planning this trip. Love your work. 👍🍺
No worries glad it helped :)
Love your videos, gotta recommend getting vacuum insulated stubby holders for you guys, you wont believe how well they work, honestly keep your drinks ice cold for over an hour in 30 degree heat, sorta blows you away, its almost weird. I have Yeti ones but there are other brands which are apparently cheaper and better so have a look around. Number one recommendation for drinking accessories.
Ive heard they are pretty remarkable! Love our YETI mugs can't recommend them enough.
Excellent info and great series too. Well done 👏
Thank you:)
Awesome wrap up guys. Definitely a trip to add to my bucket list.
I know this would change for everybody, because every vehicle is different, everyone's setup is different, but can you give some insight into total costs to do the trip?
Fuel, food etc.
When we did our 4 week Melbourne to Central Australia trip, via Flinders, Oodnadatta track, we worked out a rough cost, and budget etc.
It would be good to have a rough idea so when planning to do this trip, you have something to work off as a starting point to budget, and what to expect to spend.
Great work again guys. Very envious of you, watching from home in hard lockdown in Melbourne :(
Unfortunately we didn't keep very good track of cost, we probably should have. But its defiantly not cheap you will need to spend a lot in fuel and supplies.
Thanks for all the awesome eps Simpson Desert. It was awesome and seem like u guys had a lot of fun, bath in red dirt 😅 but how cool is it to sleep under billion stars each night. Does Matt talk alot when he's drunk Holly? 🤣🤣🤣 I think Matt is a very good actor and hilarious.
Really enjoyed the intel from your trip
cheers mate hopefully we got some good tips from it... cheers
Great job and teamwork to get the journey done. Re 2h centrifugal oil filter clamp - only one on mine is around the base, definitely nothing over the top.
yeah mine doesn't even have one on the base. Its a miracle it didn't leak more!
Terrific trip guys
You need to do the canning
Somewhat similar but as remote as you can get
I get a huge rush seeing Elsie in action
I drove one the same back in the early 80’s as a tour vehicle going to cape York
Great memories , I loved that vehicle!
Thanks guys
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah canning should be fantastic… might double check the kms this time though 😅
@@OverlandTravellers you did just fine!
The skill is in adversity how do you go forward
You figured it out!
That’s the game
cheers for this guys. Really helpful. Great work, and good on you for being honest ! I will make sure I have oil (and beer) with me now...LOL :-)
Glad it was helpful… and yeah don’t make either of those mistakes 😅
I have a 200 and would love to experience that low first from a 40 again!
Great video.
Thank you!
Super info and so interesting, love ya work
Glad it was helpful!
That was so useful guys. Thanks very much!!
Glad it was helpful :)
Adrian, well done that man
I agree! He will be a regular for the big trips from now on
Someone better tell the guys at the information center in Birdsville that you can’t do the Madigan East to West. I was in there a few months back inquiring about permits to do the Madigan East to West and they never advised me that you couldn’t. I was actually showing the lady my intended route in the map.
Yeah right that’s interesting….. it kinda seems like it’s information that’s not readily available or publicized. We only knew because of the permit.
great run down guys, very useful. cheers.
Cheers mate :)
If you get the chance to do the CSR that will give you a real feeling of remoteness as well as a 4WD challenge
Old andado station .. An~da~do pronounce
surprising that none of you actually check the kilometres before leaving on your adventure . 40% more fuel than required is recommended in case of something unforeseen same w water .
Holly, Matt, Adrian, Elsie, Bertha great video wrap up 👍👍👍
Cheers mate!
Can you tell me why you didn't stay on the Madigan Line and you turned down the Hay River to the QAA? Was this because of the fuel situation? Great trip and video, I hope to make this happen in the future.
Actually more to do with boarder permits. We needed to stay in the NT for a few extra days before we could cross into QLD. If we’d stayed on we would have crossed earlier. Also we were keen to do the Hay river just to change it up. But the Madigan was definitely our favourite
One of the other things you have not taken into consideration, because few do is altitude, ie the height added by all the dunes etc. I bet you have done a fair few k's going up.
Livin the dream!
Can you do abit of a rig rubdown on Adrian's LC
Yeah we didn’t get time but as soon as we are home I’ll be doing a rundown…. It’s so well set up.
Awesome trip
So it sounds like you all had a great time and made it in one piece.. Good info and details in the wash up. So if Elsie can make it being a 2h then my 1hz non-turbo should make it also. I would love to do the canning stock route as well one day.
Yeah mate it would breeze up :)
So enjoyed your trip I the centre. Nice plug for wine in the trip wrap up, but honestly VB ? I’m Victorian and I don’t drink that s”#* 🤣 Truly get onto some great independent breweries and you will get freebies. Keep going with the travels loving them all.
Yep I love craft beers but the VB tins were cheap and can store well space wise..... but at the end of the day it was an ill formed decision
It’s great that you guys put how long things take many k’s
Over the years I’ve crossed the Simpson 4 times. Each and every trip was completely different. The last time I crossed was a dozen years ago & it sounds like there’s a lot more traffic out there these days, such a pity. My take away from your sum-up was it seems like idiots have buggered this up to, such a shame. I will go back & take a look asap. Maybe travelling at a different time might yield different traffic conditions? It’s going back many years but on one of my trips I only passed 1 convoy of vehicles, if I don’t count the people playing on Big Red. It sounds like that won’t happen again ☹️
Awesome wrap up guys. Why couldn’t you get into Mt Dare. It was open when we were there just a couple of weeks before you. CSR sounds like fun
It’s in SA and the boarder was shut. Yep canning will be an epic trip :)
great content guys. 👍🇦🇺❤
thank you for share your video
Towing has nothing to do with the track condition. It's tyres and experience. Some even say that dragging a non driven axle/wheels actually helps smooth out the soft sand. Im not sure about that, but trailers are fine, it's the people that make it what it is.
Yeah that's a good point... done right it shouldn't do too much damage. You're right though at the end of the day its just people being there making the difference.
Cool great work
What lift an tyres were on the 79 compared to troopy ? Cheers guys
Great round up of the trip guys! We recently did the trip and noticed that there were a lot of inexperienced drivers, and most of those were towing trailers.
Yeah on the QAA there was some battlers. Modern cars struggling and I was putting along no worries.
I can't believe people are selfish enough to tow through there. I thought it was discouraged several years ago and still people are doing it. How much gear can people bring along??
Thanks for the review, keen to do the Madigan ourselves before its flogged out like the Simpson.
Cheers.
Yeah we had a few people say they have done it a few times over the years and this is the worst they have seen it. I suppose it’s hard to police and stop people doing it really.
great update, thanks.
were you going to provide the link to the winery?
We will do that right now sorry! Check the description in a few minutes 👍🏽
obsessionwines.com.au
Sounds like a great trip. Regards the oil situation. You say the 2H loves a bit of oil and then you say you didn't take any? I mean, What?
Great wrap up guys, loved the honesty 👍
Cheers mate!
How often do you use Fuel Doctor
Depends on where we are but when remote we try to do most tanks.
what about the flies ?
Not too bad. They were there but not as bad as we have had it elsewhere. I think winter is not too bad for them
Why is Wa still hard to get into if ur coming from the NT? We're just about to do the outback way with our kids and thought if we're in NT for 14 days that we can enter WA???
This was filmed a while ago so rules would have changed :)
unrelated to the video, is it possible to mount a clam hard top tent onto tub racks? Unsure where else would be appropriate to ask
It would certainly be possible you’d just have to check if the tub topper is rated to carry the weight
Honest and straight up guys , well done 😎👍🍻 !
Cheers mate :)
Great vid, why couldn’t you get to Mt dare for fuel? It’s not far from Finke and Old Andado
We didn’t know we didn’t have enough fuel at that point. But also it’s in SA and we couldn’t go over because of boarder restrictions
@@OverlandTravellers border restrictions the same thing that stopped me going to central Australia from vic two winters in a row. At least I could see your trip on UA-cam. Thanks guys, very entertaining and great cinematography .
well done guys !!!! nice tip ,Keep the feeling .Thanks again
I hope we can :)
Did you work out your milage on GPS or your Speedo I guess if you’re doing a lot of wheelspinning like you would in sand you wouldn’t get an accurate reading
I think it would have been pretty accurate give or take a few kms. We didn't really spin the wheels at all.
P.S i watched each ep at least 3 times but sorry I can only LIKE one 😅
you can like them all haha
@@OverlandTravellers what I mean is, UA-cam only allow you to liked once for each post, you cannot triple like 🤣. I liked all of your videos and try to comment as much as I can.
so east to west is harder than west to east?
Yep. You go up the leeward side of the dunes east to west….. way steeper. But you’re not supposed to do East to west on the madigan now
LOL 7.30am is early?
Not really…. But we were up before sunrise everyday.
@@OverlandTravellers Best time of the day
It was beautiful watching the sunrise
Simpson desert

Its pretty amazing!
@@OverlandTravellers thanks a lot
She's within gvm but she's heavy 🤔🤣
I think I still have 30kgs to spare 😅
