Right, even when I disagree with them (as I do quite often with this video), they are so much fun and so light-hearted. It's a joy to watch these videos.
Madonna was robbed of an Oscar nod for Evita that year! Love her or hate her, she was phenomenal in that film and I remember watching it when I was 16 years old and after the film the audience gave it a standing ovation!
Gosh, I couldn't have disagreed with you guys more and I almost ALWAYS agree with you! -Love the telecast. They crammed so much in and somehow it didn't run crazy crazy long. -I LOVE The English Patient. Unabashed literate, romantic epic fan, here. -I don't care for Fargo. Took me many viewing to kinda sorta like it. -Rush absolutely deserved Best Actor, and Feinnes was even better than Cruise (although, I do think Cruise is great in JM, as well). I'd have nommed Robin Williams for Birdcage. -Brenda Blethyn BLEW me away. McDormand is fun as hell, but, no contest there. -I'd have nommed Zellweger in Supporting. For Lead, I have Gena Rowlands over Keaton. -LOVED Evita and, am sorry that it didn't register more; though it did receive many tech noms. -Kinda surprised that The Crucible faired so poorly. I remember watching it in class in high school when we read the book and was blown away by the film. What, did the critics kill it? I feel terrible for Lauren Bacall after hearing that excerpt. Binoche was amazing, but I still felt so bad. -I'd have nominated Fargo's score for the Comedy designation. What is Fargo if not a black comedy. Thanks for these videos, keep 'em coming!
“That thing you do” is a great song and important to the film. But “you must love me” is a critical emotional point of Evita. I agree with you about end credits song but your argument is misplaced here because Evita’s song is integral to the film.
In a year of 10 I think the nominees would have been The English Patient Evita Fargo Hamlet Jerry Maguire Lone Star The People vs. Larry Flynt Secrets & Lies Shine Sling Blade The Crucible, The Birdcage and Trainspotting would likely be just outside the top 10
@@CameronMcRae09 I'm pretty sure The Birdcage wasn't taken seriously enough, it couldn't get into the BFCA top 10 when they already didn't have Secrets & Lies there, and it underperformed badly in nominations.
Not saying this to be a contrarian but I actually thought Binoche would win that night. So I wasn't shocked but pleasantly surprised. I remember being very excited for her because I had loved her since the film Blue. I happened to love The English Patient and I thought there was no way they'd pick Bacall over Binoche for such a small role. In retrospect, I think Fargo should have won Best Picture. It stands the test of time more than any of the other nominees. Like Joyce, I also really adore Secrets & Lies and I would have dropped Keaton and put Jean-Baptiste in lead.
Glenn Close got similar treatment to Lauren Bacall. She had won most of the awards leading up to the Oscars and then Olivia Colman beat her on her first nomination.
I confess to being amazed that the pleasant but extremely overlong, totally predictable and baggy "Jerry Maguire" was vaulted to the status of a leading contender in Best Picture or Best Actor. The film has the benefit of Cruise's considerable star power but Best Actor? I don't think so. All of Christopher's points, too, about the Best Actor lineup are ridiculous. "Most performance" about Geoffrey Rush's performance? Ever seen David Helfgott? Rush captured the mannerisms very specifically and it's a bit much for Christopher to complain about mostness when Cruise is flailing his arms about in a ridiculous manner never once creating a believable character. And why would Billy Bob Thornton be the Film Twitter pick? No one has talked about any of his directorial efforts in decades. The underrated performance is Fiennes'. He managed to take a uniquely literary character and tease out the contradictory, inscrutable qualities with real skill. He's an actor's actor for a reason.
I really love these and I hope you keep doing them. I think the dynamic between Joyce and Christopher is so fun.
Right, even when I disagree with them (as I do quite often with this video), they are so much fun and so light-hearted. It's a joy to watch these videos.
These videos are great, please keep doing them
Amen to ‘Scream’ as a screenplay nominee. That’s always been one of my picks for a “should have been nominated” 🖤

Love these retro recaps!!!
My Queen Joyce and Christopher, I’m green lighting a full season of your Oscar flashback shows!! Ya gotta do the 1989 Oscars show for many reasons.
“That thing you do” is a great song and important to the film. But “you must love me” is a critical emotional point of Evita. I agree with you about end credits song but your argument is misplaced here because Evita’s song is integral to the film.
In a year of 10 I think the nominees would have been
The English Patient
Evita
Fargo
Hamlet
Jerry Maguire
Lone Star
The People vs. Larry Flynt
Secrets & Lies
Shine
Sling Blade
The Crucible, The Birdcage and Trainspotting would likely be just outside the top 10
Yep, really easy to call it this year.
I agree, except I think The Birdcage would be in over Lone Star.
@@jja8750 Yeah looking at it again I think, even with its underperformance at the Oscars, The Birdcage probably would have had enough to just sneak in
@@CameronMcRae09 I'm pretty sure The Birdcage wasn't taken seriously enough, it couldn't get into the BFCA top 10 when they already didn't have Secrets & Lies there, and it underperformed badly in nominations.
And portrait of a lady
Timothy Spall should have been nominated for Secrets & Lies!
He was especially good in the climactic scene!!
Secret & Lies was my fav that year
Mine, too!
Evita would have been a Best Picture nominee if there were 10.
Agreed. It had the crafts and Madonna was probably Top 7-8.
What I learned from Lauren Bacall's story: if your friend is up for a prize, regardless of the odds, keep their prospect of winning to yourself.
You two are amazing.
I still love English Patient. I think it’s one of the best films of the 1990s.
Loved this!
Secrets & Lies is a great film!! It should've swept the Oscars!

Yay! Another one! ❤️
This was my 1st Oscar’s!!

I realised u 2 r always doing series togt. R u 2 bffs?
I Love Secrets and Lies, almost all aspects But, the pressing music throughout. Horrible. Maybe That pushed people away?
I remember You Must Love Me but I Love theater, Evita, Madonna and I'm gay so...
Fargo should’ve swept! That’s a hill I will die on.
Independents' Day?
