Lauren graciously assimilated what was going on, though you can tell from her look that she is really sad inside. The saddest thing of it all is that, yes, they gave her an honorary Oscar later in 2009 in a separate ceremony and she wasn't even invited to come on stage on the Anual Academy Awards ceremony to deliver a speech. Such an iconic actress so underrated.

Bacall's role had Oscar written all over it. The Academy has been recognising those kinds of performances for years. Look at the history books; loud-mouted, cocksure, often histrionic characters get a nomination or even the award sometimes. From Shelley Winters to Estelle Parsons and Marisa Tomei to Mira Sorvino, these kinds of roles always attract attention. I was glad Juliette won, it was a quiet but sweet performance. And she's an amazing actress.

Her family wanted her to win even more then she did so yes he was disappointed and because he DIDN'T have to make the nice face that she did. He didn't.

Juliette Binoche - sheer class and down to earth humility. European actors are much more aware that their ancestors were travelling gypsies and poor players. Look at the audacity of Lauren Bacall and her family so smugly assured they would win the prize, and then the eye rolling and self entitlement when the french actress wins instead. Hollywood people think they have the right to be treated like royalty - this was a fabulous wake up call that the old guard are not assured glory.

I believe all of them gave great performances. It was a very diverse year for this category. Bacall was a gem from Old Hollywood and still getting nominated. I can't imagine and feel her and her son's disappointment when she lost.

I love when acceptance speeches are short, it's much more classy and dignified...and the fact that she said "BYE" at the end was iconic! lol
