I love this kind of video because it’s easier to recreate! It happens to me allll the time where I get an idea from UA-cam but it doesn’t turn out the same because when thrifting maybe my base material is wood vs metal or something like that. Or maybe I couldn’t find an exact color of paint. So you using multiple types of bases and products really helps! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, you always inspire me ❤️
When I do costuming, I start w/ a black base and dry brush the paint on in varying concentrations of gold. Mixing black and gold paints in several colors ranging from dark to light and dry brush each layer on, ending w/ the pure gold color as a highlight
I had a very white French shabby chic antique shop, just a few years ago. Where I painted all the gold frames, mirrors, even brass candle holders ...everything WHITE. Can’t believe gold stuff is so popular again so soon. It use to be every 40 years things would trend cycle back around again but wow the white paint hasn’t even had time to cure before it’s time to strip it off. Makes me realize I need to pick my favorite style that makes me love my space and just go with it, instead of chasing every new trendy style that comes along. I can’t help but think it’s really all about the money. Retailers tell us what we need to make us happy and satisfied in our homes and in the process making us go broke and them (the rich) get richer.
If you want the Rub n Buff to look shiny, you rub it on or brush it on, wait a minute or two, then buff it to make it shine. It is a wax with color in it. You are very creative and fun to watch!
had a rough day today & so thankful i have your videos to watch. they give me peace and a message that something old and broken can be created to something beautiful with the right mentally and effort. thank you 💜💜
I am a bit confused. Great video! Subscribed. Your energy is and personality are amazing. The tests were great. The rub and buff . . . To make it shine you need to rub it, let it dry and run buff it well and then you will get the shiny look you were wanting. ❤
I love your diys. as a former science teacher and as an artist, I enjoy the experimenting. so fun. i set up housekeeping in the mid eighties...I can't do brass again. I also can't do country with blue-bowed-ducks. those were my loves when I began decorating.
In regards to the shiny smaller candle holder, use either a matte white primer and then spray OR sand it down a bit so it can hold the color and add more texture... or do both sanding and primer. And i've learned this by spray painting shiny brass bathroom fixtures that aged the house. I primed them and spray painted them a metallic black and absolutely love them now!
I saw someone doing this on parts of furniture, they put the darker colour on first and then highlighted it with a lighter gold. This could be another option to get depth.
Hi, I have painted many metal finishes and used steel wool to rough up the finish and then spray paint with metal primer. You can then paint any finish. Have fun!
This was super helpful! I just covered the entire frame of my antique mirror in rub and buff and it looks very flat and yellow now so I’m excited to get some glaze that will give it more depth!
Recently got my first place and i can’t wait to try this out. I am grateful for all the decor that friends and family handed down to me, but definitely want them to match!
*VIDEO SUGGESTION* You should diy a way to make faux rattan or "Cane webbing" as alot of us dont have a cane specialty store and caning is SO expensive!! Love your videos xo
I like the one with the black coating the best. I have seen this done before and that person made it black first and then did the rub and buff/spray paint. And you can also use black or brown paint instead of the wax.
Great results!! I prefer to use metallic gold acrylic craft paints for my base coats on frames. It's much more economical than rub n buff or spray. It's also less smelly. I can mix the shades of gold with other metallic craft paints to achieve different shades of gold so I'm not limited to the colors that the spray paint and waxes come in. I love ornate frames and mirrors and you found some great ones! Jo
This literally came at the perfect time!! I’m getting married in July and am on the hunt for ornate mirrors and frames AND brass/ candle holders for some of the decor!! Thank you 🥺
I really felt the, "Thank-you for giving me a reason to get out of my sweatpants today" comment. 💕 Beautiful as always, MaCenna!! Loved the look of the black candleholder best as well. Thanks for a fun and super easy DIY project!! 🙏
This type of look isn't my thing at all but you're so interesting to listen to and watch that I watched it anyway. I'd love to see more styling videos on boho or farmhouse or other types of styles for home decor. Especially since it's almost spring time.
LOVED THIS thrift flip! I like watching your content because I think everything is cute but most of the time it's more boho or modern than my style. I have a classical farmhouse vibe going in my home and I feel like this could definitely fit into my vibe! Thanks for switching it up a bit!
My fiancé and I have been spray painting GLASS candlestick holders we find at goodwill (which are typically $.50-$1.00) for our wedding because the brass candlestick holders in bundle were just too pricey for us! I am going to have to try this glaze to make them more antique looking!
I had a brass sea shell that I know longer liked, I painted it with white chalk paint. The next day it had oxidized under the paint to make a light aqua that is so much my color. A happy mistake!
For metallic colors if you paint black first and then use your metal color it gives it a better look. For anything metallic I do I use Finnabair Art Alchemy Metallique Wax. They are permanent when dry and smell good while you are working with them. they will give you the shine you were looking for.
Here is a pro tip for using rub n buff... YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY RUB IT. It is not a paint you slap on anything because it won't look shiny like she said. The way this product works is it becomes shinier the more you rub it. I would recommend just using a paper towel to buff it out and rub it well. I used this method for a cosplay prop and everyone thought it was real metal, not wood...
I'm going to try this! Do you think that smooth one would take some paint + baking soda and then gold over? I have a set of 3 that are super smooth that I want to make look more rustic gold?
This came just in time! I have been looking for gold antique frames. I am usually a Scandinavian girl but ever since I saw those gold pieces I am in love with the gallery wall!
Hi MaCenna, everything you did turned out great. I myself prefer glass over gold, have you done any glass colouring. I would love to see you do some glass DIYs on some candlesticks and/or vases. I am glad you included Kingsley at the end, you cannot have a show without the star.
I loved these!! Thank you so much for sharing. I wonder if one were to like sand paper that smoother candle holder if that would improve it at all? So that the glaze could create a tiny bit of texture/movement??
Hi there from South Africa. I have been following you for a year and I just love your channel and all the amazing content that you post. Thanx for welcoming us into your home every week❣
OMG this video was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this DIY. I love watching your channel every week. Everything you do is so high end and you really explain all your techniques. Thank you, thank you, thanknyou
Cute idea for when you’re spray painting items use a lazy Susan to help turn items as you’re spray painting I find it helps so much! And you can get them at the dollar store
Cool experiment! I have both the Gold Leaf and Antique Gold Rub 'n Buff as well and I find that I use the Gold Leaf most of the time. It surprised me because I thought the Antique Gold would be my favorite!
This video is perfect! I've been looking for gold frames at the thrift store but haven't found anything just right...and I've been thinking about diying the gold look!
Hi Macenna. A light sand and undercoat suitable for plastic is good for painting, specifically gilding. Also, buffing the wax doesn't just work for furniture. If you rub on the flourishes of the frame you really get the shine out of the wax and lose any loose wax. I DM'd you on instagram with a sample I used. If you like I can share an instagram story and show you. Another great gold is renaissance gold with king gold flourishes from Pebeo because it looks like your large frame from your breakfast nook. xx

yay! I'm so glad it's helpful!! and I have so much fun experimenting to see what works 💕

This is honestly so helpful, I never know which “gold” paint to pick!! Great to see these different colors side by side!
If you want the Rub n Buff to look shiny, you rub it on or brush it on, wait a minute or two, then buff it to make it shine. It is a wax with color in it. You are very creative and fun to watch!

I already know these diy's are going to be amazing.

The black one looks great. It comes close and has a shine. Thanks

I like the variety of goldishness and objects you tried. Thank you for making a useful lesson for a frame I have .
The wood candlestick turned out best in my opinion. It looks great.
This was super helpful! I just covered the entire frame of my antique mirror in rub and buff and it looks very flat and yellow now so I’m excited to get some glaze that will give it more depth!

I like the mirror the best for the finish, but love all of them!
Love the glaze effect! I suggest the Rustoleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish Gold Spray Paint...I find it’s a really good “brass” look!
*VIDEO SUGGESTION* You should diy a way to make faux rattan or "Cane webbing" as alot of us dont have a cane specialty store and caning is SO expensive!! Love your videos xo

Jo
Buff lightly with a soft clean cloth at the end, for a little shine/polish.
The black candle holder was my favorite! It looks the most antique because of the black undertones showing through a bit
I am obsessed with gold too.... definitely best using gold leaf - it's amazing!
I really liked the how black candle holder the most, but they're all good.❤
😍😍 what if u sanded the candlesticks first to make it less smooth ?
🤣🤣I can't believe that Kingsley was sitting behind you the whole time. Thanks Macenna!!I have been thinking of doing the same thing. This helps a lot.
I’m obsessed with your channel, I get so excited when I get the notification ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Aww thank you so so much!!! 🥰
Really like the more fitted look of your shirt. Love the layback DYI project too
Love the larger candlestick version!
I like the the black pillar candle holder's transformation. Maybe it's worth trying out with black base coat for the others.
They all look great. I would use all of them in my home. I love bronze, gold, copper, etc. thanks for a few cheaper ways to go.
This literally came at the perfect time!! I’m getting married in July and am on the hunt for ornate mirrors and frames AND brass/ candle holders for some of the decor!! Thank you 🥺
Emma Kate, I just saw on FBMP someone selling a huge collection of brass candle holders she used in her wedding...
I really felt the, "Thank-you for giving me a reason to get out of my sweatpants today" comment. 💕 Beautiful as always, MaCenna!! Loved the look of the black candleholder best as well. Thanks for a fun and super easy DIY project!! 🙏

These projects turned out great! I absolutely love rub-n-buff. When I first discovered it I wanted to transform everything lol

antique gel = FABULOUS
oh my my-....also loving the wax, I'm buying both for my craft arsenal, thanks the the head up on products
Loved this. I so related when you were nervous but excited. lol! I don’t think I like antique gold either. I keep going back to gold leaf.
LOVE ALL THE GOLD!!! So beautiful sister! Just like YOU!
💕💕💕
I love finding frames with the texture to repaint. These are beautiful!
When my mom asks me why I’m so obsessed with gold antique frames and brass candle sticks
Me: MaCenna!
HAHAHAH i love it!!!
Yes, I get that way with cooking Videos too....xo
For metallic colors if you paint black first and then use your metal color it gives it a better look. For anything metallic I do I use Finnabair Art Alchemy Metallique Wax. They are permanent when dry and smell good while you are working with them. they will give you the shine you were looking for.
I would love it if you could do a video on how to make trays or platters look vintage and antique ♡
Going to be perfect for my dark academia wood/ camper hardware.
Here is a pro tip for using rub n buff... YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY RUB IT.

They all look pretty, I really like the black candle stick u painted. Lived those picture frame. TY
Any suggestions on wax/glaze color if we wanna recreate in silver or platinum?
I use satin bronze for my picture frames in my bedroom..the candle holders I have started looking for thank you
I refreshed a lot of my Christmas decor this year with gold spray paint. Everything looked so gorgeous!! I need to try some glaze on them.❤️😊
o wow!!! that sounds amazingg! 😍
I love doing that antiquing stuff you were doing. I’ve done wall candle holders that were plastic and made them look so expensive
My favorite is the wider candle holder.
AMAZING!!!! I'm obsessed with the transformation of those frames!!!
This came just in time! I have been looking for gold antique frames. I am usually a Scandinavian girl but ever since I saw those gold pieces I am in love with the gallery wall!
Your day can always get better after macennas diys!
The wooden candle holder turned out the best!
Love the big mirror! It really looks great now.
Hi MaCenna, everything you did turned out great. I myself prefer glass over gold, have you done any glass colouring. I would love to see you do some glass DIYs on some candlesticks and/or vases. I am glad you included Kingsley at the end, you cannot have a show without the star.
MaCenna, if you get a shoe shine brush, that will work with the wax where you can buff it out.
That MIRROR I love it!
My favorite is the smaller frame! I liked them all really lol!
If you start with black spray paint then go over it with rub gold it looks very antique. I do it all the time
Finally near to the end Kinsley showed up too💕
Same best choices, the concrete frame n second candle holder 👍
Yes, cloudy skies today in O.C.♥️
I loved the black candle holder the best even though I liked all of them! Thanks for the ideas!!
Midnight is the best time to watch

Oops🙃...fun and inspiring, feeling Blessed 😇🤗🙏🏼
MaCenna, what eyeshadow do you use? I have blue eyes too, and whatever you're using just makes them POP! I always watch your videos and wonder.
I wonder if you would have had more details pop on the candle holders if you used the wax over the paint...? Loved the options!
Where is your sweater from??? I love it!!!
I’m super excited for your blog website !!! I really love that you included where to purchase your style and things like that. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love the mirror 😍 So beautiful 😄 Of the candle holders the wooden one is my favourite 😀
I thought it would be my fav too!!! But it’s like so orangey pink or something weird in the undertone
Anyone else hit the like button before she even starts talking? 🙌🏼
I just thrifted a frame yesterday with the intention of doing this. Perfect timing!
*FYI* wax is always applied last even if you use a polyurethane. Also, wax can be buffed into a soft sheen that looks amazing.
Omg thank you!!! I’m definitely going to try buffing it .. I’m so curious
This video is perfect! I've been looking for gold frames at the thrift store but haven't found anything just right...and I've been thinking about diying the gold look!
You could always try a clay paint for really smooth objects. You can paint anything with clay based paint!
Love all of these DIYS can’t wait to try theses out!
yay!!!💕
Love everything you create! I love the wooden candlesticks the most. Looks like something I’d like to recreate. Keep up the great work!
You are a mind reader!! Try a shine clear coat of spray paint. This will also help seal in the paint.
I LOVE your DIYs! They´re always so creative and really calming to me xxx

Love using rub & buff never thought of the glaze but now I'll use that too... Idea ever think of doing faux leather on a wall ??
Your voice reminds me sooo much of Mandy Moore. Recently found your channels and can't stop watching! Thanks for the design inspo!
I’m so excited to do a wooden antique mirror I have, 😊🤗
OMG Macenna .. you did a great job on those frames. LOVE IT
