    It was their magnetic anomaly detector that picked you up. They're effective at up to 400 feet.
    Makes this campaign extra difficult.

      So basically the MAD made Magz a little mad… also at the end he says the attack went off without a hitch…. Ummm… hole in the side of a multi-million dollar submarine is a pretty big hitch in my mind lol.

    The navy wants you to TLAM Moscow next.

      Why launch from so close? Launch from further when there are no enemies? Wikipedia says TLAMs go 1000km. You also can probably also hit Moscow from the Arctic ocean.

      Late to the party here, but the shortest-range variant of Tomahawk can reach Moscow if fired off the coast of Latvia. The longest-range variant can be fired as far as from London.

    I may be a year out but I am going to add that at 8:37 you not only drop a noisemaker but you also cavitate, this directly sets in motion the chain of events that leads you to getting hit at 10:30 as you were still very close to that area and the helos re-positioned to that location in order to try and search for then shoot you, the exact position of the torpedo may be a bit lucky but you would've been detected on your northern leg and had only just started your eastern one

    you actually can just fire all missiles at the start and leave combat after your missiles are far away enough from you but before enemy responds to the attack.

  • @olivialambert4124
    @olivialambert4124 6 років тому +5

    Apparently the launches give an exact position of your sub so you might as well pop the radar up for the first few launches. Also loading more than one MOSS is probably useful. I've found myself needing a second far too often, and I'd rather it started loading that as soon as possible rather than waiting for a torpedo to load first.

    • @philhanson1644

      Also, I typically don't worry about cavitation too much after I launch 8 missiles like that. If the enemies missed your giant cloud of smoke and loud rocket motors firing, they won't hear any cavitating.

    Sea wolfs greatest strength is it’s speed. In a 170 ft if water, and having to deal with big dippers and pelicans and an ASW DDG in water too shallow is a tough situation. Once you launched your cruise missiles, you gave away your position. It’s was only a matter of a few minutes before ASW A/C are on your position and tracking you actively, and passively in water to shallow to use the sonic layers to hide your acoustic signature. It doesn’t matter how slow or quite you are in that circumstance. Nuclear Subs AUX equipment such as pumps and the nuclear reactor are very loud. “Sonobuoys” not Sonarbuoys, are actually hearing the AUX equipment on your sub, not it’s cavitation.
    Once the big dippers had a rough estimate of your position, they used active sonar to pin point your location and proceed with attacks. I’d recommend firing the cruise missiles at maximum range then about turn, using the subs speed to escape to deeper water where you could than use the sonic layer to your advantage and hide.

    • @treystroeder5506
      @treystroeder5506 6 років тому

      OnYourKillList How does a sonobuoy picking up AUX translate to active sonar? Against something like a Seawolf?
      And isn't it thermal layer, not sonic layer?

    • @onyourkilllist6880
      @onyourkilllist6880 6 років тому +1

      Trey Stroeder I was referring to passive sonobuoys dropped by the LRPA and the Helos. Once the pointers (passive sonobuoys) localized him, the ASW Helo used his sonar transducer (BALL) to actively ping to pin point his exact positions to commence SELFTAC’s
      The sound layer, or sonic layer, or thermal layer, all are correct terms, is created by temperature changes and changes in salinity levels that correspond with depth as deeper water is obviously colder, more dense, and has a greater salinity level. It’s referred to as a sound layer because these changes in water temp and salinity act as a duct that traps sound and doesn’t allow it to propagate through it. That’s how subs use the sound layer to hide. It employs sensors like a bathythermograph to determine what the depth of the sonic layer / sound layer / thermal layer is approximately every 12 hrs.
      These sort of environmental effects have similar effects on radar. Cold air that is close to the surface of water creates super refraction ducts that trap and refract radar transmissions close to the surface. When I was in the gulf, my ships NAV radar used to get ranges up to 200 NM when the radars actual operational range was only 24 NM. Understanding the effect that these types of environmental effects on your sensors are extremely important with regards to tactical planning.

    I don’t really know why the hookshot plan worked this time, but I don’t think it normally would, because actually shooting the torpedo makes an ass load of noise, because of the expelling the fish from the tube. The original volume wouldn’t be much of an issue at the depth that you were at, but I would think bottom bounce would seriously amplify the launch transient and make it significantly easier for enemies to hear. It’s probably better to be closer in when shooting a tube with that shallow of a floor. As long as you keep the wire, you can steer the fish away from you if it acquires you, and being so close to a friendly unit would make it impossible for the enemy ships to shoot at you, even if they heard the transient. There’s a lot more thought process that goes in to shooting a tube at that depth than what I just said, but the point is that shot should have gotten you detected by at least a chopper. Although maybe the chopper wasn’t close enough for the dipping sonar to hear the transient so they didn’t see it coming... Anyway, I just figured I’d share my opinion on what I would’ve done in that mission, from one skipper to another. It’s better to consider that everyone can hear you than to take the chance that they can’t. You can take this in to account if you want to in the future but you don’t have to. Sorry if I came off hostile, I didn’t mean to.

    • @CMDRSweeper
      @CMDRSweeper 6 років тому +2

      Well they got enough cheats on spawning of airborne assets.
      Dangerous Waters does a better job seeing as the helicopters and aircraft have to be in the AO to be there.
      And if you sink all the helicopter carrying ships, there won't be any more of those, and if there are no planes, then no airborne assets will harass you.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  6 років тому +12

      I cavitated at 8:30, I was precision dropped at 10:00 At both those times there was no surface unit close enough to detect me with either passive or active sonar, and I had over a minute to change direction. at 11:00 I show that while silent running and almost directly under a dipping sonar the Seawolf is undetectable by the Helos equipment.
      I was torpped because the AI cheated, It does that on Elite and it irritates me every time it happens.

    usually what i do is an about face right at the start of the mission. i run 5-7 knots directly away from the base to about 150 nm (or the deep water) away, occasionally raising the esm if im curious. it takes about 10-15 min even on time accl. but its a hella lot safer, if more boring to watch on youtube.
