TASM's have a similar punch of 2-3 harpoons but are weak against aa, I recommend damaging a capital ship with harpoons or torpedoes before firing off a tasm to secure a hit
I've learned that the Huangfeng ships have a veeeeery similar sound signature to a Trawler. I've sunk several trawlers in game. Since the Huangfeng looks like a coastal patrol ship (literally looks like a cigarette boat or speedboat or PT boat), I've learned that the farther I am from a port, the more likely it is to be a trawler. And Vidya is right. TASM = Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile. TLAM = Tomahawk Land Attack Missile
15:10 Yeah you can do something about ASW aircraft Magz, you can't shoot them down but you can give them a moss to chase. Even on the hardest difficulty the AI can't seem to tell the difference and will happily waste all their ordinance on a moss they cant kill. This usually spooks the surface ships and subs though.
Yeah and that's the problem, Firing the MOSS is great if you have already been detected but if you are avoiding detection or attempting to evade it's launch does give away your location and it also tends to make runners of most transport fleets once they have an idea where to run from.
Before you said the words "you can't shoot them down", I was hoping "shoot them down" were the very next words you were going to say before those hopes got crushed xD
Ha yeah this game has caused a military nerd like me to waste so many hours looking up sub launched SAM's. Suffice to say that any such system is still classified. I swear all I need is a few redesigned Aim 9 Sidewinders hell you could 4 pack them in a vls cell . . .
They've developed them, my last MEU they were testing them, the main thing they were testing is how the missile would track it's target, which is the largest issue, I believe they're working on something that would be attached to the mast of the submarine, to get the initial lock on the aircraft. The only issue with that is if it's in an extreme area like abeam to the submarine, then you're looking more into radar guided instead of an infrared missile. Which now that you're giving off radar emissions, you now have that to deal with. I think the main thing is it's just not a viable option realistically.
In these shallows missions, since you have to be so close to the waterline for your towed array to work, I typically just go straight to periscope depth and deploy an ESM mast. If that takes to long then I use the periscope as well. Since the conditions are less then optimal for stealth, maximize you detection capability.
Interestingly, by 2000 all of the TASMs had been withdrawn from the inventory and converted to TLAMs, due to the excessive use of those weapons from Gulf War I through the Clinton Administration (he loved shooting TLAMs at everything that moved in the Middle East). The Pentagon decided that, since the Cold War SovFlt was defunct, TASMs were no longer needed. Now, they're not only bringing back TASM, but Sub-Launched Harpoon, as well. Oh yeah, we stopped carrying Harpoons when we went from the analog Mk 113 to the digital Mk 117 FCS, for my boat, that was @1985..............................
TASM: Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile. Our boats don't use Harpoon anymore because Tomahawk basically does the exact same thing except the latest block Hawk has better surface search and can actively avoid CIWS by going around Islands, using other surface features or land masses to mask it's approach and has a very powerful jamming system on its terminal approach and will try to hit the ship at the stern or bow in order to penetrate as deep into the ship as possible before detonating while presenting minimal aspect to any forward or rear mounted kinetic countermeasures or chaff dispensers. I personally like the Flt.3 688 because it has VLS. Best way to fire at a surface combatant is to two missiles at nearly the same time with one set to pop up so the CIWS basically either lose lock or split their fire. Haven't had a ship defeat this tactic yet. Also the Seawolf doesn't have the correct Sonar suite, towed array, and it also has eight wires and fires the CBASS swim out variant of the Mk.48 which would be like clubbing baby seals so they only allow the Seawolf the 84 campaigns 48's, they are called ADCAP but they aren't ADCAPS, they're early eighties 48's. Also the Harpoon in real life skims at around 5-50 ft at over 550 knots. Every American weapon in this game is made weaker to make the Soviet boats which are garbage have a fighting chance. Also the propulsor on the Seawolf looks absolutely nothing like it does in this game.. It looks pretty stupid but hey..
I could be wrong, but I believe if you raise & activate those electronic sensors, that anti-sub aircraft flying around could detect those sensor signatures, thus compromising your location. Hence he did not want to use them too freely.
That's exactly it. Popping radar is like popping a flair on your location to hostile aircraft. If you are going to use them at all you use them for only a split second before withdrawing them and you only use them if it is absolutely necessary.
Killiyard? The K stands for thousand. I realize a "killiyard" and one thousand yards are the same thing but it's called thousand yards as in, 5.7 thousand yards, or 2 thousand yards.
As many have pointed out before, but it irks me being a weapons nerd: there are TLAMs and TASMs. TLAMs (Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles) don't engage ships. They are programmed and set with warheads for land-based targets. TASMs (Tomahawk Anti Ship Missiles) are programmed and have warheads designed for marine targets. Though more and more there is talk that the latest series of Tomahawk will be able to be changed with a few quick acts just prior to launch for either type of target. TASMs in the game can't engage ships and TASMs can't engage ground targets.
dude....you don´t use TLAM....you use TASM^^ sorry for being that late, but i just saw that video, anyway, i love your vids, they are entertaining, and very informing.. greetings
Sadly I don't think Cold Waters models limited numbers of ships in the enemy fleet. I've sunk what seems to be the entire Soviet fleet and the entire PLAN several times over. Except for those PLAN diesel subs because *god* have the Chinese got a *lot* of those damn things! Hopefully they'll add that later because it would be cool to force them to sed out their SSBN's early because you sank their entire fleet.
The latest Dot Mod does keep track but even in the 1984 campaign Russia historically had 40+ Victor class subs so that's really hard to diminish over the length of a campaign
I'm not convinced the rockets would fire underwater. ICBMs launched by subs, which don't have much water to go through before they reach air, have to be shot out using pressurized water/air and only ignite out of the water.
funny game, the average depth of taiwan strait is only 50m, 150ft. very few place is 80m, 240 ft depth. just dreaming you can run the nuclear submarine on that place. before you start new game, you can learn the geography from your high school book.
If it's that shallow why is Taiwan determined to build large blue water subs. Build light subs for the strait then with that experience build heavy subs for the eastern side of the island.
A dozen 205/206 class subs with 96 torpedoes between them would wreck havoc. Let the Mings past then torpedo the following Songs, then go after the Mings. Or with 8 mines, 4 torps, lay mines outside Chinese naval ports.
Silly Magz those are TASM's aka Tomahawk Anti Ship Missiles.
I realize this right at the end, I was thinking they where TLAM's while playing.
Edit: To be clear I am not even sure why I have TASM's loaded.
They re actually quite effective against capital ships according to my experience due to their larger payload, used them against CVs in the past
using TASMs could've helped a bit with the ammo preservation, I guess, leaving torps for any subs
@MagzTV At the start of the game if your ship has VLS you automatically get half TASM and half TLAM.
TASM's have a similar punch of 2-3 harpoons but are weak against aa, I recommend damaging a capital ship with harpoons or torpedoes before firing off a tasm to secure a hit
I think the logical conclusion of this game is Magz figuring out how to sink ships using nothing but a MOSS
lure them ashore
Trick the ASW aircraft to drop torps on their own subs. >=]
Drive two MOSS's underneath two escorts, and watch as they blow each other up xD

And Vidya is right. TASM = Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile. TLAM = Tomahawk Land Attack Missile
i thought the T stood for Tube-Launched
Letters are backwards it's "Tomahawk Sea Attack Missile."
Magz had his Jingles moment here I guess.

Heres something I've wondered about this campaign: Why cant you resupply in Japan or something?
Japan is far more vulnerable to Chinese cruise missiles and it may also be politically unfeasible for sub operations to be conducted from Japan

Congrats but you're also wrong. The US hasn't used Swim out torpedoes since the USS Thresher so nice try.
18:40 Magz raise your radar and esm to get the perfect solution, magz your radar, MAGZ
I could be wrong, but I believe if you raise & activate those electronic sensors, that anti-sub aircraft flying around could detect those sensor signatures, thus compromising your location. Hence he did not want to use them too freely.
maybe

Great job Magz
You must have been right about their MPCs only having MAD cause you didn't get blown into next year during your sprint.

Thank you for protect Taiwan :)
Magz has been playing with his crystal ball again.
oohh.. get you and your personal invite to the admirals office.. the navy golden child, eh?
Maritime Aircraft don't have sonor buoys in this game?
Helicopters use dipping sonars, and I think Russian planes are equipped with sonar buoys. These are Chinese however.
The Chinese definitely should have sonar buoys, even if they aren't the highest of quality, they do have them.
Yes there are sonar buoys in this game
You totally should of tried the missiles

Gibbs Rules #39: No such thing as coincidences.
Holy Michael Bay thumbnail.
Heh. Bay. Oceans. Explosions. Heh

I haven't seen it, but do you ever get to destroy an aircraft carrier?
I think Magz has sunk one and put his sub pretty much on the flight deck of the sunken carrier.
ill have to try and find it.
That was via a mod, I believe. I don't recall it being in the main game yet
Valor Vanguard yeah I saw it, it was when he was taking the Alfa for a spin
dude....you don´t use TLAM....you use TASM^^ sorry for being that late, but i just saw that video, anyway, i love your vids, they are entertaining, and very informing..
greetings
Was only to add the same as below, your mistaking TLAMs and TASMs, you have 3 TASMs
16:48 torpedos made a pentagram satan confirmed
*doesn't have enough torpedoes to sink entire fleet*
oh shit better forget about the transports
Maybe the letter s and l are switched in Australia
Less whinging, more launching!
Magz, I have a question for you. Did you by any chance play in a Pathfinder game about six or seven years ago with a Ted??
Magz, if you destroy a ship is the opponent losing one ship, wich they need to replace??
A bit like the idea in il2, that you explained yesterday.
Sadly I don't think Cold Waters models limited numbers of ships in the enemy fleet. I've sunk what seems to be the entire Soviet fleet and the entire PLAN several times over. Subs like that need a single, large rocket engine ... for quick exits
If you saw one blow it's ballast tanks and perform an emergency surface, you'd think they had one.
Put foldable wings on it too and the sub can just emergency surface and proceed to join the Navy air wing.
No wings required, rockets should work under water, sub is streamlined, fire rocket , achieve 40 knts for short period, outrun any torp etc.
I'm not convinced the rockets would fire underwater. ICBMs launched by subs, which don't have much water to go through before they reach air, have to be shot out using pressurized water/air and only ignite out of the water.
Solid Fuel Rocket
I'd like to see you in an old WW2 sub up against the Chinese in this campaign.
24 years of military just a quick lesson. An invasion can not happen with out transports! Take out transports mission over. Good job though.
1) I feel like you should be able to access ports in Okinawa or S Korea
2) Where is the Taiwanese navy if there's an invasion force en-route? lmao
This game is pretty much you versus the enemy. The fortunes of war goes as your mission results go
would be nice if the devs would have put a way in the game to shoot down the got damned annoying flying enemy buzzards
