@@AutomateYourLife I just rewatched and noticed the first question you asked was about Home Assistant compatibility (missed that first time around). Nice to see they are working directly on it. Pity Broadlink seems so reluctant to do the same when so many are jumping on board with Home Assistant now.
Wow, Brian. I absolutely love these kinds of videos where you interview some of the key innovators in the smart home space. These folks also do small, but significant design features that are missed by others, like having the bot's battery accessed from the top of the device rather than the bottom so you don't have to unglue/unstick/remove it from it's position for a simple battery change. I know we'd like to see some bot variations that allow for a longer finger or perhaps a second finger that could be moveable and maybe plugged in to give flexibility in terms of how it's mounted. I like their products and appreciate you covering them.
Thanks so much Hugh! You're right, there are little innovations within these innovative products, and I love that piece of what SwitchBot does. :) So I'm sooooo glad you're enjoying it!
@@AutomateYourLife it sure is! I decided to go with HomeKit for my home and just a couple of months ago when I was first researching that really limited what was available. Already, in such a short time, so many extra devices have been added to the list! Very excited to hear him say they’re working on a robot vac too. I so badly want to have a dinner’s ready scene/automation which sets the lights and puts on some music and also sends a vac into the kitchen to clean up anything I’ve dropped on the floor. I constantly drop things on the floor!
One of my favorite videos to date!! I would love to see more interviews like this with other smart home companies. Really gives you an insight into the company, their people, and how they do business. Makes a big difference when all we have to go on today when deciding whether or not to buy a product is UA-cam reviews and Amazon ratings.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this Joe! This was a ton of fun to make and I loved feeling SwitchBot's approach to the smart home came out loud and clear...and I like their approach in a lot of ways.
Thanks so much for this review and the view forward with Davidson. I'm an Assistive Technologist (provide support to people with disabilities around technology that enables them to live with more independence) and am a big fan of the simplicity, flexiblity, price, and reliability of the Switchbot eco system for what it can do to make life easier (and more fun) for my clients.
I did notice a clear improvement on SB reliability. A few months ago (From 23/09) it was often not connecting to the cloud and thus getting useless. Nowadays it stays connected and is way faster and more reliable. Shoutout to SB for that.
This was excellent. I hope you can interview the other players in this space. Also maybe get questions that the community is asking but haven't been answered fully. I like their ability to showcase their products too.
Hey Vic, good news! We did ask the users of this community to provide most of those questions. So stick around, and as we get chances to interview, we will. :)
I bought a couple of unique, innovative Switchbot products. One was a door sensor with a motion sensor which means it can detect when someone has entered or exited through the door. The other was a motion sensor with a light sensor, so if you're using the door sensor to turn on a light, you can not have it unnecessarily turn on the light if it is already bright enough. The problem is that there's no way to natively use it with Alexa. They could have through configuration/set up trigger a condition based on the added sensors. For example, have it so that the motion sensor is not triggered when there is sufficient light... And come up with two logical triggers for the door sensor for entry and exit. Thus, it's been rather disappointing. Yes, I'm sure there is a more complex way to use these sensors as needed with Alexa, but the point is to try to reduce the complexity for the consumer to make them more accessible for use by everyday people, not home automation geeks.
The new Mini Plug is a WiFi connectivity device so it doesn't need the hub. You wouldn't need a HomeKit Hub either to simply control with Siri or the Home App, but if you want to run automations in HK, yes...you will then.
The Switchbot Curtain 2 looks great with those additional rollers. It's a bit disappointing, I bought a pair of Switchbot Curtains back in April and they slip and lose their calibration often. It would be nice if you could just buy the clip-on brackets without the center section.
@@AutomateYourLife don't waste your time. They'll refer u to website. Wait until the product evolves on its own. I am watching switchbot. They might be something worth investing in. If this philosophy is consistent. If it changes even a tiny bit, they could fester.

I honestly love the idea of all of SwitchBot’s devices but because the app is not accessible for blind users,, I’m unable to use any of their products. I’m really hoping this changes in the near future.
Great video as usual. If you were to just now start expanding your smart home (beyond Ikea and Nest hubs, which is what I have now), would you start with Switchbot or Aqara? I ask based on price, reliability and compatibility, as they both seem to have versions of all the products I'm considering.
Great question! I think Aqara's more of a traditional hub with the devices they have. More sensors, and it's a more traditional Zigbee arrangement. They have some upcoming devices that are really exciting and are backed by Xiaomi. So that's a really strong offering, and when you think about HomeKit, that's the use case for me. SwitchBot is more of those non-traditional devices. They're fun, exciting and different. They are starting to round out the platform, and I like what they're doing. Probably overall though, they have less traditional offerings that you'll be after. I think you can build alllllllmost a whole home around Aqara right now, whereas Switchbot is a complimentary piece. The good news? I have both and they can work together with Google. :)
I liked this. Good job. I wish they would have answered a question I had about ikea curtain track compatibility but they just sent me to the website specs. A tech company, sent a tech lover, with spec compatibility questions, to review tech specs on a website, for ikea curtain track compatibility, which is thier target demographic FOR THEIR FLAGSHIP PRODUCT. mind-blowing
Brian! You are an absolute champion for this video. We need more people like you who are willing to ask the hard questions with these smart home companies. While I understand his response about zigbee and zwave... it seems like a petty excuse to blame it on "you need another product" to run their products. There are so many cheap zigbee/zwave hubs on the market and numerous industry alliances they could make to increase their product/sales outbound taking them to the next level. Maybe they don't have the liquidity to pay for these licensing alliances but I did not like his response. You would increase security, reliability and consumer happiness by including a zigbee and/or zwave line of products. I am so pleased with you about asking about the reliability as that issue the main reason I keep Switchbot at arms distance... I won't recommend these products to my smarthome install/consulting clients unfortunately because I personally have the same issue at about 40% of the time I dont not get a response when I push a signal in smartthings, do a voice command in Google Home/Alexa or even run a schedule in their own app. I wish I could double subscribe to you right now!! Do you have a Patreon?!?!? I need to donate to you ASAP!!! 🤣🤣
Oh man, and I do hope SwitchBot hears the SmartThings issues loud and clear from your comment Bryan. I love ST, and I want that partnership to be a match made in heaven. Both companies would do so well if the SwitchBot gear worked directly (and locally) with ST. As for your overall comment, thank you so much. For the issues, they should look into it, no excuse.
Hey Brian, I just received the lock from switchbot and I have the wyze lock. Can you make a video comparing the wyze smart lock that replaces the inside of the deadbolt and the switch bot lock? I have both locks and after using both smart locks I find the switch bot is actually easier to install than wyze smart lock that replaces the deadbolt inside, however the wyze smart lock wins this one for me because of the auto unlock feature . Switch bot currently has no auto unlock feature. But maybe one day they will release it. I talked with some of the devs at switch bot and there's no plan yet for auto unlock. Although the auto unlock feature on the wyze lock only works for me about 80 percent of the time. But when it does work it's incredibly useful especially if my hands are full and I'm carrying some stuff
I agree that's the most natural comparison and I've been working with the SwitchBot Lock for a long time now. I've had some mixed experiences for sure, and I'll say that I have to work through those issues with SwitchBot before I can come out and say much about it. The auto unlock thing is a nice feature on the Wyze, and I'd say that Wyze is perfect every time I request an unlock!
