I understand the high cost for the finish itself, being that it contains UV-cured additives and of course the company should make a profit. But $700 for a high-output, rechargeable flashlight is just taking advantage of customers that don't know better. UV LEDs have been around quite a while. Even their marketing materials show they are trying to make it seem mysterious - calling it LED cure and whatnot. It's UV cured. The actual bulb technology doesn't matter. Just my two cents (maybe I should charge a couple hundred).

I agree with you. The guy at Highline Guitar used a similar product to finish a guitar body. He just exposed the guitar finish to the sun a couple of minutes and it was fully cure. Not sure it's the same product but I certainely question the price of the flashlight!!! Anyway, thank you jon for sharing this video.

This was informative, especially for using using this product for 5 weeks. I still have questions. You mentioned the pros to using it, but how durable is it? Are there different options for sheens? Is it compatible with all stains? And will it hold another product if its redone down the line? Can you do touchups with it?
Has anyone in the comment's bought amd used Vesting?

Hello Mr. Peters, I greet you from Nicaragua. I admire their work and advice, a pity that in our long-suffering country we could not make our dreams come true. God bless you and your nation.

I’ve been using a UV-activated clear product for tying flies for fishing for several months now. I was wondering why something like this wasn’t available for wood finishing. The price on the light seems to be prohibitive, but the advantages to a production shop are clear.

Depending on the UV wavelength, you may want to get some UV filtering glasses.

I recently saw a product very similar to this called " chimiver" same system to be honest. Their light is 1000 bucks. Their floor curing light is 15k, which is insane😮 I wonder how this compares to rubio for durability and longevity🤔

how special can that UV light really be to make it worth $600?? Would be curious to see if it could cure with a standard UV light that would be cured with more common UV cure resins.

So it looks like a UV light, but it's not UV just a special LED? If they come to your shop I'd love to learn more about the product and process, and how this light works to cure the finish without requiring safety glasses to protect your eyes from the emitted light. Neat product.

I see no one actually answered you. I’m not from the company but I have many years experience with LED curing. The answer is essentially yes but with possible drawbacks. It will take more time to cure under UV but it can. There are many factors to account for: quality of light, intensity, duration, dispersion etc. that will ultimately determine whether the finish will cure properly and fully. I wouldn’t advise taking a piece and sticking it outside to cure under direct sunlight due to the likelihood of dust, dirt, debris particles making its way onto the surface of the finish before it is fully cured. Overall, I’d say UV *could* work but it would come with risks and unknowns.

Saying that something can be cured with LED light is saying almost nothing. What kind light is it? UV? What intensity is required? Is it really safe to be using with no protective eyewear?

I’m going to guess that’s a special UV LED light? So I can’t take the one off my front lawn and Use it to dry this finish? Always enjoy the videos. Even as a hobbyist I wouldn’t mind investing in the system as long as the wife okays it.

I think a normal LED light won’t have enough UV, but there are good options for industrial UV LED, used for curing.

They say "Do not let the LED HardWax Oil come in contact with direct sunlight as it will cure and cannot be changed after that." on the website.

Jon, do you know how those guys handle at GSJ handle finishing from the aspect that there are 2-3 other guys building furniture in there as well & how the mitigate dust on finishing says (IE do they schedule a “finishing day” in the shop where no power tools are to be used thus keeping airborne particulates to a minimum, etc..?)
Also I’m curious what makes an established furniture maker decide to stop using what they currently are if they aren’t having issues. I think I picked up that a distributor came to their shop & demonstrated the product so that very well could have been the impetus but 1.) that’s a big leap for a maker to make & 2.) that’s a big capital investment with even that small light.
Anyway, awesome video & amazing technology!

Thanks Joshua, Jeff and Rob at Greene Street don’t spray lacquer ( a very fast drying finish ) so slower drying finishes like an oil wax finish can slow down production. The nice thing about this finish is it doesn’t stink up the shop and once it’s hit with the light they can continue to work and make sawdust
