Polystyrene sweats the chips and batter and makes them soggy ,paper all the way .

Friday was usually always fish and chip night in our home, but as the cost went up, the frequency went down! Barely 6 or 8 times a year now!!
When I was a kid my family, the four of us, would have fish and chips followed by ice cream every Saturday. These days fish and chips is an occasional treat due to cost. It nearly doubled in a year.

I popped into Kelly's ( WhiteCross St mkt ) 4 x cod n 2 large chips and 2 sauces....£65 And as a loyal east ender I popped into Cooke's Pie n Mash ( Hoxton mkt ) 4 x double pie n mash.....£58 ffsk ! No wonder our traditional shops are closing.
SHITE......and I thought we had it tough in NZ. $140.00 for that feed, (65 pounds sterling), just WOW.
Do you know Barneys Pie & Mash shop in Walthamstow? Double pie, double mash and liquor £7.50 and it's delicious - just like we all remember it to be!😋

It used to be a cheap tea ,,fish n chips last Friday 4 of us fish supper with tarter sauce peas ,,£79 , and charged us 25 p for the bag ,he drives a 100 thousand quid car and 7 people work there it's a right scam ,
Yes most chip shops are a rip off. Our best chip shop here in the Midlands on the Wednesbury/West Brom border does a small fish with chips for 4 quid. The fish is a good size and there are enough chips for 2 people. The chips are lightly battered and cooked to perfection and they're constantly cooking a fresh batch so they're always hot and super fresh.The shop is super clean and they sell everything you can imagine. Their curry and peas are brilliant and cost a pound. The shop is called the Chip Box. There are loads of chip shops in our area but most of them don't seem to know how to cook chips and they often cook very large amounts that go cold very quickly. They often reheat them and you can imagine what they taste like. I've taken them back in the past.

@@drg111yt Sorry mate I typed Chip Box as one word but it's two after The. I always ask for a mini fish and chips in a tray as It's less messy and stays hot. Not sure if it's always Cod but for the money it good and fills us up. Love Bewdley but so does everyone else as we found when trying to buy holiday caravan there. Enjoy Bewdley mate.

Chips in my local chip shop £4. Here’s the kicker it’s in Northern Ireland and we grow millions of tons of spuds but chips are up to twice as dear as England.

Cannot beat eating chish 'n' fips with your fingers watching the sea in Ramsgate ! Even if you get mugged by a seagull the size of an osterich .all adds to the experience ! LOVE IT !
One I don't mind, but they usually call their mates over, and within 30 seconds its like a scene from 'The Birds' movie. Those Herring Gulls are quite a size too!
Top Tip! If you must eat outdoors where there are seagulls, make sure there is a wall behind you. That usually foils their 'swoop and grab' manoevers.

I was born in the United States 75 years ago to an English mother and I spent summers at Grandparents little flat in Cleethorpes and my fondest memories were when Granddad brought home fish and chips. Thank you for reminding me.

i remember as a kid fish and chips 1/6d (7and a half p)
Our courting days (pre marriage dating, for younger viewers). One budget, a Friday night, out for a meal, sit down eat in at local chippie. Bought a car, eat fish'n'chips in the car at a local beach watching the tide coming in. Now married many years, still romantic, still go to the beach watching the tide. Eating fish'n'chips 😊.

I wonder if any member of the royal family ever secretly got greasy fingers enjoying real fish and chips, not the posh stuff made in the royal kitchens, the REAL stuff. My family migrated to Australia in '62 and it was my mum who eventually discovered fish and chips for the first time a few years later. My mum discovered it when working part time at a pub in Melbourne. When dad went to pick her up one afternoon, she brought it out with her and I still remember that first tasting even though I was just a little kid.
10 pounds ? Even allowing for the conversion, that would still have been a hellova lot cheaper than it is around these parts.
And around here you can't get cod, it has to be either flake or whiting, a few shops have couta.
I also remember the days you could get a bucket load of chips on the way home from school for 10 cents. Wow, I'm old.
I remember having fish n chips on the beach in Australia.. Fairly English weather that day but it was all freshly cooked and delightful.. Not sure what the fish was..

It always used to be fish and chips Friday as a kid because dad got paid on a Friday it’s was a little treat today as much as I love Fish and chips now it’s no more than 6-8 times a year prices are up I remember chip we’re 10p a portion lol 😂

That was a proper feed of fish & chips - real chips, like your granny or your mum would make, none of that shoestring nonsense. I suppose that it's a good price for London but very expensive compared with my local chippy. Cod, chips and mushy peas (or curry sauce) are £6.50 and you get about twice the amount of chips. Looked nice though.
i bought 4 battered prawns and a fish souvlaki - cost me $34 australian but = i can get a seniours meal fish and chips $16 = local pub - so twice with a small drink = i am going to the pub next time !

I love the skin. When I was a kid, my mam and dad always left the skin. I was the only one who liked it. Memorable stuff.
You know what DJ i have not eaten a fish and chip supper (as we called it) in a park for 30 years. It brought back many memories of good times and good friends, and great food at a low price. A piece of nostalgia there mate and thanks for the vid.

Obviously everything is a bit more in London. You don’t mind too much if they are a tad expensive, if they are good, and yours were good by the look of it.

You live in the wrong town. Fish & chips at my local chippy in Nottingham - £4.75...and we tend to think that is expensive. Oh and by the way, ANY fish with the skin on is absolutely DISGUSTING. Fish skin makes me want to throw up; Seriously.
UK is expensive, period. Partly it's the exchange rate, but retailers used the pandemic as an excuse to up prices. To support the Japanese economy, I'm switching to Japanese whisky. Note the spelling America pals.
Just about the only thing you can name in UK that is cheaper than Japan are dairy products. Houses, cars, insurance, motor fuels, clothes, shoes, restaurants, appliances, public transport ... you name it. And not 10-or-20% more expensive, I'm talking 100% or more. But by far the biggest saving over UK is the cost suburban and rural housing. Exchange rate and low cost of borrowing money are major factors. As example, a three-bedroom detached house can be had for 25,000 pounds. That's the cost including agent's fee not the deposit.

Admittedly,not in London, but I got a Haddock and chips from my local Christchurch chippy,the other night.Haddock,I kid you not,was about a foot long, and enough chips to feed me and ‘er indoors! Cost? £11.60! Bargain. Couldn’t agree more about the cutlery;- It’s got to be fingers all the way!🤣👍

A bit basic and uncivilised. Where's the lemon, where's the tartare? Wasn't it boneless? In Sydney Australia I'd expect to pay the equivalent of £7.20, with some salad included.
Great valve there for a tenner. there was another reviewer bloke on here who went to Harrods and paid £38.00. for fish and chips, I don't think he was very happy.....€11.00. (£9.44.) for fish and chips here in southern Ireland, this is small town prices, not city prices. yes definately nothing like eating fish and chips with your bare hands....no need for the fork....love the video....
Why is Rock Salmon over £7? It's dog fish,used to be dirt cheap as the fishermen (fisherpersons in BBC twat English) wanted to get rid of them from their more profitable catch and they were hard to process due to their tough skins.. Can't believe plaice is cheaper. Rock Salmon disappeared altogether in the 80's and 90's

Just had a nice fish n chips here in N.Ireland, two good size portions of cod and more chips than I could eat for £9.95 , across the border in Simpson’s restaurant, Carndonagh,Inishowen you can sit down to a lunch special of delicious homemade vegetable soup followed by a generous portion of very tasty cod and chips with tartar sauce for €13 (£11.10), always good food at great prices if you ever visit Inishowen, Donegal.
I like the video. The cod and chips looked great, well cooked, pity they're in darkest London. I was a biker for many years, and my Mum was born nearby there in Leyes Road, Custom House. Where are you from? Your accent reminds me of P. H. Moriarty in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
I had fish and chips for £7.80 last night in Dumfries, in Scotland and it was delicious! With very generous portion size - enough for me to freeze half the fish, which I'll have next week with a baked potato and salad! There's a fish and chip shop near the bus station at Ayr doing a 'fish supper' for a fiver, and judging from the queues outside, doing very good trade. Relatives down in Kent tell me it's over a tenner down there nowadays.
£10 is good?. I remember when it was 1 shilling and 6 pence. A shilling for cod and six pennyworth of chips which is seven and a half pence. No wonder all the English shops are gone.
