Ive got a a 1st gen '92 the band adjustments on the A518 trans was the best thing i did to my truck followed by the 3200 rpm governor spring this was in '08 everyone thought 4100 was too much then i don't think 3800 was even an option. i then crank the fuel screw, put on Lucas injectors and advanced the timing. i could pull my dads Kenworth w900 like if was pulling a empty trailer. I still need to change the fuel pin n do the kdp

I would say.. atleast a 14cm turbo, Red Head steering gear, front frame brace, rear disk brakes, definitely head lights with relay to get the load off the switch.
I have a 93 auto so i don't want to grenade that transmission but I have a HX35 that need a rebuild I guess I need to look into putting it on my truck now ..
The headlights on these trucks suck because of the weak electrical system. These trucks need relays added for low beams, high beams, clearance lights, and blower fan. The fan is pretty tricky though. I've never went back and fixed mine after the first attempt. LEDs are a good fix too. They draw less current, so the LEDs actually help prolong the life of your wiring and switches.
👍😎yeah buddy I love the first gen dodges me personally If I got my hands on one that was clean the first thing I would do is put a intercooler in it. especially if I planned on throwing more fuel at it and upgrading the turbo all that’s going to create heat. or at least run a full-time water/methanol injection kit to help keep my air charge temp down.
On the newer trucks black mods look good but a good classic like this has to have the classic chrome look and if not then at least match the body paint but the grill and wheels have to be chrome or polished aluminum and in my opinion I would've left the exhaust in the back and if it was a dually with a flatbed then I would put stacks but we all got our own taste, nice truck though
Yeah I agree with all your statements and if you see a few more of my videos you'll notice I only had the hoodstack because of the compounds, there wasnt enough room to run a downpipe to run full exhaust. Not that I took the compounds off I have full exhaust

Off topic but I just watched this and really like the mods. You mentioned turbo and my v clamp fell off and I've ordered a 3" and 2.75". Ones too big ones too small. What am I doing wrong? Should there be a gasket in between? Also your paint looks great.
In the video he said that on the intercooled trucks you can run the fuel screw in all the way and it wont run away. That's not true, just like the non intercooled trucks it will 100% run away if you dial it in all the way. Other than that great video and info.

Yes but be careful since the fan is right next to it, theres also a blow by tube that goes under the truck. A little puff out of that is fine but shouldnt be just blowing it like crazy
Gavin has excellent advice here. I own 2 of these trucks and have learned a few things myself. Be expected to put some money into the truck on top of the purchase price, these old girls are pushing 30 now. lol If you want a 4wd truck I'd be fully prepared to do as Bob Swiss suggested too. The front steering and suspension parts do not hold up well against the power and weight of the cummins over the years. Give her a borgeson steering shaft, and moog tie rod ends. When you test drive it, check for any excessive play or pulling in the steering also any shimmies or shakes. The frame has been known to crack by the steering boxes on some of the 1st gens so it there is play in the steering make sure it is not that, if it is I'd pass on that truck. If it has a 5spd (getrag) tranny and it shifts well, I'd still drain the fluid and replace it with your choice of synthetic 5w 30w motor oil and OVER FILL IT by at least a quart. This will keep the top bearings from heating up and add tons of life to the transmission. Check to see that the ABS or brake light is not on and that you have a good firm pedal that will hold steady and not drop to the floor when pressed. If it is, the easiest, cheapest, and SAFEST way in my opinion to fix them is to totally bypass the system if your state motor laws allow it. ABS technology was not very good back then, and in snowy weather with ABS engaged I have had my brakes fail to work at all. If you go into getting a 1st gen with the mind set that you may have to make some repairs, upgrades, and mods once you're done you will have one of the most reliable and simple vehicles on the planet that is a blast to drive. Good luck!

I have a 1990 5.9 and a 1993 5.9 Cummins and one of them is to go in my 1991 Ramcharger. Which one should I use ? The 1990 has all the accessories on it which I would think should transfer to the 93 if that’s the best option.

You can also go 10mph in 1st gear up narrow mountain roads pulling 5 tons of firewood and scare the hell out of yourself wondering if you're gonna make it or start rolling backwards and wreck, not to mention pissing everyone off behind you for 6 miles with no place to go around. No sir, I won't be trying that again before I drop a few hundred bucks on some cheap hp. Sometimes you just need more power.
What about transmissions, I'm getting a 1992 12 valve single cab 4x4 I have an nv4500 I've seen bell housings for like 300$ or so if I found the right ones cus the nv4500 I have is from the Chevy 6.5
Yeah a transmission should be a big priority if the truck has one that's bad or going out. If your looking to run manual an nv4500 is a great choice. Dont know much about them
No issues with it I dont her the rig till I pay off it off, altogether its 5,000$ it's a stock 1992, Dodge Cummins automatic, 4x4 with 230,000 miles, I'm excited to get it
My 1st gen has a HY35, been wanting to upgrade to the HX35, do you know much about the HY? It spools quick but doesn't give too much boost and it doesn't make much noise.
Yeah they are virtually the same turbo except one was wastegated and for an automatic and the other was not wastegated or something, theres no difference really
@@GavinHuke Mine says HY35W meaning it has a wastegate but mine does not have a wastegate, I'm guessing it was dicked around with. I know the HX35 has a wastegate that takes up to 30psi and I'm only getting about 15 out of mine.

I agree the original color schemes are great. There are some pretty sharp custom jobs out there as well. To each their own. I plan to repaint mine. One day. Maybe. I use it as a work truck and the bed is pretty beat up but the body is pretty good. I'll probably put a spray-in bedliner in it when I repaint it the original color scheme which is the same as his except mine is red.
Yeah they quit selling them, youll have to do some research and try to find them on ebay or Amazon, my best advice is type in the size (7x6 I think) clear chrome headlights

I think one of the better headlights you can get there probably more than 100 bucks now that’s what I paid for mine they’re made by Hella and was nice but the hell my headlight it puts up light really nice and when I’m on my low beams course I got them adjusted right no one ever flashed me with their highbeams but yet I see very well when I put on my highbeams now it’s nice about the hell a headlight is you can replace the bulbs when they burn out you don’t have to replace the whole headlight I guess that’s all it is with the light you put in your truck but anyhow also the the style the way the lens is is what they used to put an Mercedes Benz and BMW is way back when these headlights are made in Germany good quality very good quality
All I was gonna do is go from 21cm turbo housing to a conservative 16cm pump is already turned up timing bumped. And that was it but now 3200 gov spring with a Denny t fuel pin sounds good. How’s that work with towing?
I'm not sure if your thinking of a different pump or not but I'm 99% positive theres so such thing on these pumps, not saying I know everything about them but I know a guy who does and he even said he's never heard anyone refer to anything on these pumps as a "timing chamber"

you say truck lite headlights are ugly but you put those trash lights on. 1 those are not dot and sae approved. 2 they are no where near as bright as truck lite. 3 truck lite headlights will outlast those. not to mention they are made in the usa.
I'm real sorry but its stamped directectly on my housing "DOT approved" in little letters along the top side. I've had them for over a year now and zero issues. I've got my 60 bucks out of them. About to get some Morimoto bulbs to put in them to see how much of a difference it makes since people say they are the best.
First is electric it's 20 years old and wasn't that good rewire and address factory issues (fuseables), next switch self exciting alternator, if running bigger tires or hauling hydro boost brakes, then air intake, exhaust, fuel pin/spring, never had an issue with steering shaft or pump idk maybe I'm lucky I'm in the official cummins million mile club so I've gotten to known these trucks and wouldn't trade it for anything
im almost ur polar opposite. i hate chrome and love black, black chrome is ok. if that truck was mine it would be arctic white or gunmetal grey with black accents
Not everyone only cares about performance. There are most aspects to building a truck than ruining a perfectly good motor. If that’s what you want to watch to search for it.

Get better power. time your pump up .makes a big difference.i did about 5 % and I feel a big dffrence
Timing is maxed to the head on my truck. Had to bump it quite a bit for big injectors

Id use the 1990 engine. It has the big bowl pistons and the better VE pump

Believe it or not if you leave it 100% stock you can wrap over on the mileage if you probably maintain it

Do the coolant Bypass on the back of engine for No. 6th better cooling where the heat builds up.

I'm not sure if your thinking of a different pump or not but I'm 99% positive theres so such thing on these pumps, not saying I know everything about them but I know a guy who does and he even said he's never heard anyone refer to anything on these pumps as a "timing chamber"

With compounds it was 20-21, rn with the single and bad trans it's down around 14-15.. with a new trans I'll get it dialed in and back up around 18-20

my grandpa bought the truck new and it sat for probably 10 years until he passed away and then my uncles been using it as a farm truck so its not bad but im sure it would need some work.

It takes a lot for the frame to actually rust through on these trucks so if it is then absolutely dont buy it

Just leveled 2.5", and no those were 12 and 2" adapters. No rub. Also ran 16.5x14s on 33s right after this and those didnt rub either.

you say truck lite headlights are ugly but you put those trash lights on. 1 those are not dot and sae approved. 2 they are no where near as bright as truck lite. 3 truck lite headlights will outlast those. not to mention they are made in the usa.

I'm real sorry but its stamped directectly on my housing "DOT approved" in little letters along the top side. I've had them for over a year now and zero issues. I've got my 60 bucks out of them. About to get some Morimoto bulbs to put in them to see how much of a difference it makes since people say they are the best.

First is electric it's 20 years old and wasn't that good rewire and address factory issues (fuseables), next switch self exciting alternator, if running bigger tires or hauling hydro boost brakes, then air intake, exhaust, fuel pin/spring, never had an issue with steering shaft or pump idk maybe I'm lucky I'm in the official cummins million mile club so I've gotten to known these trucks and wouldn't trade it for anything
