- Today I dig into my copy of Zelda: Majora's Mask's promotional VHS tape. This thing is wild. Ya just don't see marketing like this any more. Also, here's a link for the full, un-narrated version (uploaded and upscaled to 4k) of the tape itself: • Majora's Mask VHS Tape

🎉surprise ending lol
It certainly was a surprise to me lolol, that was a legitimate live reaction 😂
Seriously? A promotional tape and someone recorded a town hearing-of all things-over it? That’s genuinely hilarious 😂
@@JoysticKnight the more I watched of it (not featured in the video) I think it may have been some super unorthodox job interview??? So funny
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac dude, I can’t breath 😭
Great video. Someone who owned that VHS tape before you put a piece of scotch tape over that gap so they could record that last bit we saw. The VHS wasn't broken, they have that gap to prevent recording.
Ay thanks so much!! And I had no idea!! I feel like I had a vague memory of doing that when I was younger but totally forgot about it lol
I remember my mom being VERY judgmental of people who recorded off VHS tapes. Then a few years later I got hooked on Limewire!
@@HeyWhoInvitedZacI think you ended up lucky the whole tape wasn't recorded over. At least whoever owned it before you only did that after the Majora's Mask and Banjo Tooie segments.
I got this in the mail and I still have it. I was obsessed with ocarina of time and I remember literally running from the mailbox to the living room to watch this tape. I think majoras mask was the first game I pre ordered, I remember getting the gold controller for 19.99 with my copy on launch day at toys r us. One of the highlights of my childhood for sure.
That’s so amazing, I love how memories like that just stick like glue. Appreciate you sharing!!
After playing this VHS tape I feel like I'd be getting a phone call and a creepy voice would just whisper "3 days"
My guy called me on day two and said "my bad, sorry, two daysssss"
I know it's cliche to say this but I clicked on this video expecting a channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Talk about a crazy item I never knew existed!! Subscribed :)
Yooo that means so much to me!! Thanks a ton man :)
I agree!
same, just out of curiosity for this time capsual did I check only to find a measly 2K, this is the other side of the sword at work for obscurity, ya its new in the eyes of hard cores, but the abundance of surface level content everyone outputs gets more general views. Happened to a lot of other series.
It's strange to me how, on the advertisement side of things, in order to make these games psychologically relatable to viewers, they had their target audience, young males, discuss different parts of the game as if they were relaying information about the games to a friend in casual conversation. They weren't "Too hyped about it", if you understand what I'm trying to convey here.
Nintendo did this a lot in the promo videos. They would have these "cool older kids" try the games and give it cool status confirmation so that the young kids wanted what the cool kids liked.
That was honestly good, succinct pitch for the game. It's hard to sell MM's premise in such a short time
10000%. Especially for what the general gaming audience was emerging into
I'm thinking nintendo was worried that the game would be too dark for the consumer so they took extra measures, especially with the inclusion of Banjo on the cover makes it much more appealing to kids. The only reason I ever touched Majora''s Mask as a child was because of the gold cartridge. (in a pile of hand me downs)
That's a super interesting take, and one that I have to agree with honestly. I remember OOT gave me nightmares when I was little, so I'm sure they heard at least SOME of that feedback lol
Tooie blew my 10 year old mind. I couldn’t believe you just started the game with what was an entire game worth of moves from the first game, I just assumed I’d have to relearn the moves all over again like they do to you in the Metroid games. People have to remember that at the time there weren’t many 3D platformers with a moveset that was constantly evolving throughout the game, (actually, Banjo might’ve been the only Platformer at the time that did this) and seeing these kind of leaps in advancements in N64 games was mind blowing to a kid at the time.
I always wished I got more into those games, my cousin and I (he was my main gamer buddy) never got it!!
I can confirm it was a random mail-in! I remember coming home from school and it was just randomly in our mailbox, and we watched it a good few times out of hype!
Just imagining the hype of that moment makes me all happy inside
Oh that's why it was taped, some VHS's had like a tab thing to prevent people from recording over them but if you broke the tab they could be recorded over. If I remember how VHS's work from when I was a child
You are correct!! I had totally forgotten about that!
When that video showed the toys r us entrance, i could smell that image.
Lololol I’m glad I’m not the only one 😂😂
Yes there were promo tapes like this for a lot of the N64 games. You can watch all of them on youtube as they have all (including this one) been uploaded to youtube.
That's awesome, wtfffffff. It's kinda funny, cause I actually had the intro to Majora's Mask recorded on VHS when I borrowed the game from a friend. I bought it some time later.
I wish I could play MM for the first time again. What a flippin game.
I got this in the mail back in the day, and I was so hyped for Zelda and Banjo-Tooie I watched this tape a bunch of times. Lol
for real tho!! I remember any time there was a cool promo on VHS I'd wear it down. Pre-UA-cam days when that type of video information was hard to come by
I am unspeakably grateful they're not worth anything because I passed up a chance to buy one at a secondhand store a few years ago. I like to think God wouldn't have let me overlook it if they were extremely rare, what a homie!
What a homie indeed!
I actually watched this promotional tape in a goodwill many many many years ago. Until that point I didn't know majoras mask existed. A year later I bought it on the wiiware channel on my new wii
That's wild!!! I'd love to find something like this at a goodwill
I knew when you showed the VHS cassette and it had the scotch tape over that hole... somebody used to record something else. And BAM!! Weird lady at the end of your video.
Well congratulations, I read your comment at 7 in the morning and actually laughed out loud lololol
This tape is responsible for my obsession with the Legend of Zelda series. I got this thing in the mail when I was a kid. I never played a Zelda game before I got it, but I thought it looked cool so I got it and was instantly obsessed. After that I played every Zelda game out there. Still a fan to this day, still have the tape too.
Old promo stuff like this really sticks around in my memory too, I miss those days
That's amazing! Never knew there was one for majora's mask. I have the banjo kazooie promo vhs, you should check that one next!
I definitely will!! I have a few other VHS tapes that I've started hoarding....and I may or may not have just bought a new capture card to get them upscaled lol
I did indeed get this tape in the mail as a kid. Most of my N64 games came from Toys R Us and my mom actually had the Toys R Us credit card, so I guess it didn't feel out of the ordinary that we'd get a VHS tape from them in the mail? As context for the younger folks, this was an era where you could literally get software CDs as cereal box pack-ins and free AOL CDs were everywhere. Taco Bell even had floppy disc games as kids meal prizes. It wasn't a stretch to mail out VHS tapes, I suppose. The tape itself was only about 5 minutes long anyway.
One thing I remember vividly is being INFURIATED when getting the game because this marketing video made it sound like the game lasted THREE FULL REAL WORLD DAYS. You watch that video again and point out to me ANYWHERE that it's mentioned or even ~implied~ that 72 hours means IN GAME HOURS! They don't even mention the time travel system at all!!! First time in my life I felt falsely advertised to.
So weird right!! I feel like advertising back then was allowed to be about as misleading as they wanted to be lol
I remember seeing this on AVGN's review
I could swear the guy doing the narration at the beginning and end of the VHS is the current Nintendo Direct narrator 5:08
This is my favorite game of all time, and our gold cartridge is missing some plastic at the top right corner. It's taped over with clear tape. Still works!
We don't have the tape. Got our N64 from some garage sale before I was born. Grew up playing the 2nd version of OoT on my sister's file, without progressing out of respect. Then I created my own file.
That's true respect right there
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac Yeah. I think I did save, but I was mainly just running around the areas she was in. She got to Jabu Jabu's Belly before she got stuck and stopped playing that file. She told us (my brother and I) that we could delete the file, so I did. To make room for my two completed files. One has the Biggoron's Sword, the other has the quest started. Got to the prescription. (I nearly got it on both files, but climbing the wall with the platforms, skullwalltulas, tektites, and a gossip stone on Death Mountain in time is harder than getting there fast enough. Glitchless, even with backpeddling, sidehopping, fast swimming, and Epona.) The third file slot is my brother's. He got to the Fire Temple.
Great part of history even the ending haha!
Hahaha it certainly was a surprise to me 😂
Rare W for the YT algorithm bringing me here 🤝🏻
Glad you’re here my friend!
I actually owned this! I used to just watch it for fun, the banjo tooie trailer was excellent
Absolutely it was. Ya just don’t see hype pieces like this anymore
I got something like this in the mail but it was a VHS promo for Banjo Kazooie. From what I remember, Blockbuster, Toys R Us, & Nintendo Power were involved in sending these tapes out.
5:22 $19.99 for that controller or even $29.99....? Whut??? That would sell for so much more money now haha
Right?? I'd be a millionaire if I knew what to collect back in the day lol
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac A few minutes ago, inspired by your video and supported by a nice amount of alcohol, I bought this gold N64 controller non-boxed for €50.....I hope the stick is still in good condition haha🤦♀
@@MrOpz yessss comment back later and let me know how it is!!
Nice, now we can combine the Millenial creepypasta with the GenZ Analog Horror
I remember this. I had this tape back in the day. It's the same way I learned about Pokemon.
No way!! For me pokemon was just EVERYWHERE at my school lol
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac That happened too, but before that there was a promo VHS in the mail like this one that introduced the game boy games and the anime.
This brings me back man . I was sooo excited for this game and loved it
I honestly miss hype pieces like this
Great find! I had the promo tapes of Star Fox 64 (which is still hilarious to watch to this day), Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo-Kazooie (narrated by Jon Lovitz, of all people).
Such good memories! Check 'em all out, but especially Star Fox 64, I still laugh at how over the top it is.
Annnnnd adding it to my eBay list lolol
I remember getting Promo VHS tapes of Banjo Kazooie and the Pokemon franchise when I was younger. The pokemon one was wild, because it a few live-actors playing the characters in-universe.
I haven't seen that one!! Well, looks like I'm off to eBay again lol
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac I'll check the old VHSs at my parents' home to see if they still have them.
Wait I had this... probably still in my parent's attic
Time to go mobile 👀
The tape isn't because the VHS was broken, the tape is there to disable the wright protection!
So wild!! And of all things to record over 😂😂
Ooh nice, didn't know this was a thing. I have seen and have a couple VHS for Yoshi Island, still fond of them and happy to still have them. That one definitely had a style going on for it lol
Oh snap I didn't know they made one for Yoshi's Island, I'll have to check that out!
I actually got one of these thru Nintendo Power; I even got a promo tape for Pokémon
I may or may not have just ordered the Pokemon Promo VHS.....keep an eye out video coming basically as soon as it arrives lol
You never showed us the spine of the box! I need to know what to look for on shelves out in the wild!!
Gah you're so right!!! This weekend I'll take a photo and put it as a community post, good lookin out!
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac Sweet!
Pretty sure there was a decent amount of these for the N64 I remember having these including this one.. obviously never thought about keeping them. 😓
I may or may not have bought two more off of ebay this week oops
1:42 Edit: I posted before the video ended haha.
That final part where you show something recorded over the video is the reason why the corner was taped. That's the spot where the break-out clip is for 'recording-protection'. I guess if it was truly broken then the screw that's on the bottom of that corner should be missing, non-functional due to stripping of the thread etc. Super cool that you included what's actually on the tape though!!
Isn't that wild??? I figured I should stop it somewhat early instead of accidentally doxxing some random lady from the early 00's lolol
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac Not kidding, when I saw the pic of the taped corner I was really thinking what was going on since it's the spot for the 'recording-protection' and I hoped you weren't scammed by the seller. Turns out somebody taped some rubbish on top of it, but luckily at the end haha. Hé, you could always try to rerecord the complete intact original (if you can find it, but likely not impossible) back onto the tape, just an obscure idea haha
My older brother has a copy of Diddy Kong Racing's VHS. I didn't realize they made VHS tapes for games that weren't Rare!
EDIT: Upon seeing Tooie, I'm remembering my brother saying back in 2000 he saw a cardboard skeleton Grunty inside Toys R Us and that was the first time he'd seen there was gonna be a sequel.
That’s amazing!! DKR is goated lol
"Rare" I see what you did there haha
@@Sg190th it wasn’t a pun, I just thought there were only VHS tapes for games made by Rare. Very surprising for me to see that Zelda got one
@@sithlordmikeyp I know but I thought it was unintentional, which made it funny for me. I also didn't even know there were VHS tapes for these games. I only had VHS tapes for movies or specials.
I had this! Wow i totally forgot about this! Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed it :)
I never had an N64 as a kid, but I emulated this a few years later and have fallen with the Zelda franchise ever since. OoT was my first game, and MM my second. I loved all the cool minor stuff they added, like Link's side and jump flips.
It was def a nice little change of game feel. Kept it feeling fresh and updated even with such a short dev cycle
There was a Banjo tape like that i used to watch as a kid. I was wondering if anyone would even remembered it so i didn't bother to mention it.
I keep hearing about it!! I wanna watch it
i think i have this floating around somewhere
A little piece of gaming history. Can you imagine if they mailed out blu-ray discs for promo today? lol
Oh wow getting this recommended a day after uploading and it only has 350 views? I hope this gets more attention! I love silly promo tie in stuff like this, I miss when we'd get demo disk or even pre-order nicknacks
Hey thanks so much friend! I appreciate that :) I'm right there with you, old promos and catalogues were my favorite lol, ads in the 90's and 00's were buck wild
Oh Yeah, I had this one. I had all of the promo tapes, but stuff happened and a lot of my VHS collection was lost.
Ahhhh such a bummer!! Well hey for what it's worth they're really not too pricey on eBay these days!
someday someone's going to find my VHS tapes where I recorded myself playing zelda, and be surprised
“Honey I recorded the OJ trial, let me see…woah is that f***** ZELDA???”
So did street fighter 2 turbo,
And the first wave of gameboy Pokémon games.
The idea of a “game guru” always makes me laugh.
lol right? I want that job
I wonder how you got on the mailing list. I was 13 when MM came out, had an N64, and shopped at ToysRUs, but I never received anything like this.
Same!!
Hey well done on this video! It was a very interesting topic and you explained it well. I was wondering if you could possibly make a video about DK64 or Paper Mario64? Grew up playing so many games on the N64, such an amazing console.
Ay thanks so much!! Yes definitely! I'm trying to get my hands on some good CIB copies of more N64 games, so I'll make sure those are on the list :)
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac Cool, good luck man! Looking forward to future videos.
I actually have this vhs tape I bought this like back in 2004 on eBay. Pretty cool
Such a fun piece to have!
i love this so much.
Such a solid find!!
Why does the voice over guy sound a lot like the current voice over guy for Nintendo nowadays?
I got sent a promo tape for Donkey Kong Country. It focused heavily on design of the game’s models and baffled me as a young kid. I wasn’t sure if the game were coming out for SNES or the new Ultra 64 or what.
lol I love when marketing collateral misses the point like that
This, Starfox and diddy kong racing
DKR is a severely underrated game in my opinion
This reminds me of the Star Fox 64 VHS tape!
Sigh....*opens eBay*
Really wish I still had my copy. If you have kids, and they love a particular game, toy, item, etc. Don't let them throw it out!!!
I feel that, there are SO many games from my childhood (and a literal cheeze-puff jug FULL of pokemon cards) that are just *poof* gone
i remember my cousin had the banjo Kazooie promotional tape i would watch it a ton.
It's becoming my life goal to collect all of these mailer VHS tapes, they're so rad and such a time capsule. Even how the videos were edited feels so different and old
I still have the Banjo-Kazooie Promotional VHS from Blockbuster, and was narrated by Jon Lovitz
stop, seriously? That's freaking incredible lololol
aint no way thats 300 butterflies
No trust me my uncle works for nintendo it's for sure 300 butterflies maybe even 3000
Dude why did you cut it in the middle of the Legend of Zelda: Alameda of Time preview
😂
My cousin had this VHS back in the day
Your cousin rocks
very cool!
Hey thanks friend! Appreciate you watching and commenting :)
I used to have THIS 😭
eBay!! Go get yourself another!!
Me and my sister had one of these
that looks cursed.
I mean when I put it in the VCR I did hear someone in my walls throat singing something in Latin but I think that's normal?
nice video, intro doesn't drag on and there's chapters, thanks
Ay thanks friend! I appreciate that!
Any Burnout Paradise fans think the advertiser like DJ Atomika? (Mark Hildreth) I swear the voice sounds identical
It's been SO long since I've played that but now I'll have to find a clip to compare lol

Whaaaaat that’s so cool!! I’d love to get some of my stuff graded
BRUH. Very cool
Coming October 26? I'm hyped. Haha, didn't notice @Decglen also said very cool, it's a widespread response now.

Is it no longer common Knowledge that this happened?
It's been so long I think our collective memories have been erased
@@HeyWhoInvitedZac It's the illuminati
Shhhhhh 👀
Kinda surprised and not that there was a VHS tape, it fits the time period, but feels like it doesn't fit Nintendo? Also I have a Good cartridge: someone was unfortunate enough to sell there's to a game pawn shop. Didn't know it wss a rarity for years...
I might be off base here but I feel like this era in general was one where brands weren't too concerned with fitting their traditional brand voices
Didn't get this, but I got the Banjo-Kazooie VHS, and I'm pretty sure it was narrated by Jon Lovitz.
I need a copy of this 😳
