Thank you, good reaction!... And Yes, Stromae had grown Up without a father figure, as his father was murdered in the Rwanda Masacre when he was a kid...its a very personal song...

Stromae’s Dad died in the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 that involved tribal massacres…. Rip.

"The mum could be hiding something" yeah, as people have said in other comments, his dad was killed in the Rwanda genocide but Stromae's mother apparently didn't know how to tell him at such a young age and continued to tell him that his dad was just busy working as he was already a very absent father before his death

Stromae's music is always based on deeper thoughts, although the music is sometimes fun.

Unbelievable (no criticism, just amazed) that you have just heard of the brilliant artist Stromae. The rest of Europe knows him for many years now, and await his hopefully quit return with new music.
On the other jealous you will be able to listen to many more songs of his hand for the first time.
Alors on danse' There is no better place to start than Stromae's first hit. ...
    'Moules Frites' ...
    'Formidable'
    'Tous les mêmes' ...
    'Carmen' ...
    'Ta fête' ...
I hope you will find the time to listen to one of the best music artist this century!

Actually "Papaoutai" is a contraction for the french "Papa où t'es" = papa où es tu ? In english "Daddy where are you?"

Hi ! Super cool analyze and reaction ! Thanks a lot! I'm belgian and Stromae is one of our pure artist. You have asked what about the title : Papaoutai. It's a word play : "papa où t'es" = father where are you? Plus, it's a reference to the french verb "se faire empapaouter" which means to be fooled. ;-)

Stromaes dad died when he was around the age of 9 in a Rwandan Genocide. His mother couldn't bring herself to tell him that and would lie to him saying he was away at work. He didn't know the truth until he was around 12, and this song is essentially telling the story of how he grew up being lied to about his absent father, but also raises the issue with children all over the world growing up without a father.

"Papaoutai" is a phonetic (then a wrong) way to write : "Papa où t'es" (Where are you Daddy), like if a child wrote it, I thing. This bad writing is willful, to give an infantile look to this lyrics (this is my interpretation witch consistant with some lines of this song who could be said by a children).
