Stromae was born in Belgium from a Rwandese father and Belgian mother. His father left his family to go back to Rwanda to live there, where he was later killed during the Rwandese genocide in 1994.
Stromae later told that the death of his father was easier to accept than the fact he never knew having a father.

You cut the video off too early and missed the point where the kid sits down, gives up and mimics his father. That to me that seems to represent the start of him growing up to become an absent father himself (learned behaviour).

Stromae is an extraordinary young man. He has risen to great heights, but he has suffered a lot of lows in his life. Commenters below provide a good background for Stromae. Stromae is an anagram for maestro. His real name is Paul Van Haver. He took his mother's last name. She is Belgian. Stromae was born in 1985. He has an older brother and younger sister. His father was a prominent architect from Rwanda. He would frequent come and go between Belgium and Rwanda. Stromae says he only remembers seeing his father 20x or so in his whole life. There are pictures of him visiting his grandmother in Rwanda so, who knows how frequently he saw his dad. What is clear is that he felt a profound sense of abandonment by his father. His father was killed during the Rwandan genocide in 1994 when Stromae was about 9 years old. He was sent to catholic/jesuit boarding school at 16 after not thriving in public school. By the time he was 15 he had started a rap group. He went to film school where he would hone is craft as a rapper and would release his first album in 2007. While rap was his entree into the musical world, musically, he was very influenced by a famous Belgian singer Jacques Brel (Bob Dylan of Belgium), Cuban Son and Congolese rumba. These influences are very evident in the songs he produces. His songs are almost always rhythmic, using different instruments. He has an incredibly strong baritone that sometimes narrates sad themes, but the rhythm is always uplifting.
After an 8 year absence Stromae is back. You covered one song Sante. The next huge hit is "L'Enfer". Please react to this. During his hiatus he worked on projects, producing music for other artists. He also got married to his long time collaborator and stylist and they have a child now. Whatever pain Stromae felt from his non-existent relationship with his father, he seems to be making up for it with his own son. When asked why he stayed away for so long, he answered the reporter by saying he wanted to focus on raising on family. Stromae in the end is a family guy. He went back to Rwanda and gave a concert. He has kept ties with his family in Rwanda. His half siblings collaborate on his projects. Stromae's brother Luc is also a collaborator on his projects. The love the international community has for this young man is extraordinary. I'm so glad you are discovering him.

Brilliant summary. You hit all the points, and then some. I wanted to add another point: to me, each song is a story right? Santé celebrates service workers, we celebrate those who can't. Papaoutai about absent fatherhood, L'enfer about mental illness/depression/darkside ideation. All of them - File de Joie, Tous le mème, Formdable gives me goosebumps. Each performance Stromae shares with us is incredible and intentional artistry. Each video is a song. Each song has characters. Stromae imbues the characters in his songs with such authenticity that these characters feel so real to us, from his official song videos to when we watch a live performance such as Racine Carrée - we know which characters he is portraying on stage - regardless of whether or not we even understand a word he's saying. Stormae is a gift to art and a blessing to my soul.

He just dropped the 2nd single (l'enfer/ hell) to his new album in an epic fashion. 'Formidable' and 'Tous les mêmes' are both incredible songs with maybe even more incredible videos to accompany them. Most definetly worth checking out. Grtz From Belgium

He grew up with his mother in Belgium because his father died in the Rwandan genocide in 1994 when he was only 9 years old. The title "Papaoutai" stands for "Papa où t'es ?" which means "Dad where are you ?" in French.

In this song and "Ta fête" Stromae used Congolese Rhumba guitar riffs, he loves to use instruments and musical styles from all around the world to enrich the mood of his songs.
The word you were looking for the "animated Stromae" is "mannequin", this is the same word in French, just like 1/3 of the English vocabulary.

I’m Belgian and react on your video, because I’ll remain being amassed by the cultural differences between the USA and Europe. That’s a bit off-topic what I’ll say, it’s just an impression what I’ll share… Stromae is an incredible artist, but he’s not a celebrity, we don’t have “celebrity” culture in Europe - if you’re an artist, you’re famous for your work, not for your lifestyle. You also totally avoid to perceive yourself as someone who’s in position to lecture people on whatever… One can walk downtown Brussels and can accidentally bump into Stromae and his wife, there will be no photos, there will be no security guards, there will be no screaming girls. Just a regular guy, while at the same time being also an incredible artist. I think that’s important for you to know if you’re going to react on other European artist - just keep in mind that they aren’t famous the way American celebrities are and they don’t perceive fame the way Americans do. CHEERS and good luck with your channel!

Hmm yeah, we do have a different mentality over here in Belgium(Europe) but don't you dare pretend like stromae would get a few pic's taken ;) although not for the "fame" but for his authenticity and simplicity as a person and admiration for his wonderfully creative art. I think we dont make our artists feel uncomfortable in public like they have to hide their presence to have a "normal" time out.

You are so right! I'm an American who worked as an executive assistant to a very famous (in the International Public Health arena) dean, doctor, and researcher, who is from Belgium. My 13 years of working with/for him were by far the best years I've ever enjoyed at a job and a good part of that is because of the type of person he is and how he treated his staff. He was always very humble when receiving accolades or awards. He always sort of downplayed any fuss people wanted to make over him. He just wanted to do his job and help/serve community. I watched an interview with Stromae earlier this week and he reminded me so much of Pierre with his thoughtful, gentle, humble, elegant presentation.

Stromae is amazing. I really enjoyed watching how excited you are at discovering him. I was blown away by him when I first heard him and it’s kind of like I’m getting to experience a little bit of that again in watching you.
I thought you might want to know that, in the translation you’re using, there are some mistranslations that are pretty important to the meaning of the song.
In the chorus, “Où est tu, papa?” and “T’es où,” should be translated as “Where are you Papa,” and “Where are you,” instead of “Where’s your dad,” as the translation you’re using has it. In the correct translation it’s much more of a plea to his father rather than someone asking him (or he asking himself) where his father is. I think it’s more powerful as a plea/speaking to his father.
Also in the chorus, the translation for “Sacré Papa” is totally off (they have it as “unique papa”). Although “sacré papa” can be translated as “Sacred, holy, or blessed Papa,” sacré also means “damned.” I think this is the primary way Stromae is using the word “sacré” here (in English we’d probably say “Damn you” in the same context).
What’s interesting to me is the way Stromae might be intentionally using the word “sacré” because of that double meaning-his papa is both incredibly important to him (therefore sacred) and is also absent and unavailable to him (therefore “damned” or “damn him”). In the context of his father’s death his father is also “damned” in that he was “damned” with the unluckiness of visiting his Rwandan family at the wrong time.
There may be other mistranslations in the translation you were using, but those were the ones that initially popped out to me. I hope this helps your enjoyment of this incredible song a little more!

Love the reaction and seeing someone else become a fan of Stromae. I wouldn’t mind a longer commentary on the video if you choose to do one in the future or for any of his other songs. The more you listen to his music and the watch the behind the scenes and making of the music, you can really see the care and passion he puts into his work. A complete artist, from composing and producing, the to the creative directing, and the deep lyrics. He gets in character for some of his songs and it’s really wonderful to see.
I would definitely recommend seeing a mini documentary he has on his channel that he did for his latest album, “Stromae seen by / Stromae vu par” (m.ua-cam.com/video/S7RI3HxKtE8/v-deo.html)
