I feel the change in season 2 was necessary to keep the weight of Lockon's death in season 1. Also, the way the others treated him would be hard to take for a real person.
Coming from someone who enjoys 00 more than any other Gundam series, I'm glad we can all at least come together in our mutual worship of Lockon Stratos.
@@MyStickman10 would you believe me if I said that in the original base concept for 00, Lockon would have had a far larger role? Setsuna would have still been the main character though
Well lets say that season 2 will be more character driven. But I'm just a 00 fan boy who loves it. Most of the disparity in my mind comes from the lack of Technology, the three superpowers are fighting with muskets when Celestial being has automatic rifles and better body armour. Once the GN-X rolls around the technology hurdle is overcome and the Gundams are tested. The movie shows some thing that no other Gundam series to date has: "Mother fucking aliens!"
Well I think 00 does a lot for the series as a whole, I feel it really embodies the spirit of what a Gundam (XD Setsuna). It follows different point paths that other Gundam haven't done and I love that about the series. And you're right the movie does so much amazing thing with the build up of what Gundam 00 is. The Human race need to stop fighting against each other to actually deal with greater issues such as an example with the state of our world right now. It's amazing.
"I never knew a Haro could make me feel so depressed." So true. It was true back when it aired in 08 and stayed true when I watched the Blurays a few years ago. That is such a good scene.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that 00 was partially written as a response to what was going on in the middle east since it was written during the height of the war on terror. This is why the show deals with a lot themes much closer to the real world, like peace through violene, interventionism, and energy concerns. It was the first Gundam show I really watched back when it aired in the SciFi channel when they had an anime block. I loved it and was really the first tv show in general that I actually paid attention to the story.
One can see the influence in the plot. Energy wars waged primarily in the Middle East, three major houses battling for control of energy and space (the solar rings and space elevators) - easy to be replaced with America, China, Russia, if one wants to - and the very first episode: "We fight this war in the name of 'god'". Don't get me wrong. I am a believer in Jesus Christ. But the idea of some "god" who demands the death of those who do not believe in him/ her/ it, is just alien to me. I know it is a thing, I was told that I needed to die for refusing to change to worshiping a guy's god, but that is not the God I worship.
00 is my favourite and IMO the gundams being these overpowered destruction machines has to be the case for what the show is trying to accomplish. People will go to war. Stopping war is an ordeal. You can't be slightly better than someone if your goal is to stop all war. People lose battles every day. People have Pyrrhic victories every day. Both sides of a battle are not ever put in a situation where someone comes and slaughters both of them and the governments running them are told "Stop going to war and you will stop losing millions if not billions of dollars," Celestial Being can't have mobile suits that are just slightly better because that won't suffice. A slightly better robot than yours can be pressured and can be beat, this means you can still go to war with it. But a suit so much better than yours standing on your neck and saying "*I* will let you up when you promise to stop going to war, and not a moment sooner," that forces you to make a hard choice. It makes the choice to face Celestial Being suicide and the government's choice to throw away lives and money and get just get voted out by someone saying "We've lost too much fighting Celestial Being, let's not," While this doesn't happen in the anime, it's the intent behind fighting anyone going to war with great overwhelming force. The options have to be death or failure and that's what will stop war. Not people understanding each other, the understanding that if you go to war you will be spanked, humiliated and fail.
Then again Celestial Being's founder pulled some Foundation level Shenanigans when revealed by season 2 to make you think about the whole stop war with force option.
I think the worst offender in term of initial invulnerability is Wing and the worst offender in end-time invulnerability probably SEED... though newtype piloted psychoframe machines of the UC (like the Unicorn) are also guilty of this. In 00 in the beginning Gundams massively outperform anything else, but can be overcome with enough effort. You either need a super-talented pilot (like Ali Al Saaches) or a whole load of lesser units (like the HRL attack on the Ptolemy and especially the desert engagement where they needed to be saved by the Trinities), but it CAN work. And once the other factions get their hands on GN tech, it's a far more even playingfield. In SEED the suits are only semi-invulnerable on a timer, but run out of energy at some plot... I mean point. That is until they bring in the nuclear-powered suits and ruin the whole dynamic... also the rules of when certain weapons can penetrate active and charged phase shift armour are... shifting as the plot demands. Sometimes beam-sabers cut right through PSA, sometimes they glance off without damaging the suit. In Wing the suits start out literally invulnerable. Even shooting a Gundam for hours with regular guns will do nothing more than give the pilot a headache from the shacking and clangs. And once beam-weapons become widely used... which are for the most part used on AI controlled suits that are inferior to Human pilots, thus leaving the feeling of threat to the "hero-mech" duels. Out of the three series, I'd say 00 handled it best... if you ignore the movie. The movie is really different beast and I can see why some people like it and many do not. Though the way the movie start off was a brilliant idea in my opinion, which I wouldn't spoilt for the world. :D One thing that I found a refreshing change compared to other Gundam series though is that 00 didn't retread the usual "Earth vs. Colonies" foundation to the story that pretty much every Gundam series is based off of. I also like how there are far more factions. Apart from the usual setup of two major factions, plus the hero-faction and occasionally a neutral kingdom (like Orb), 00 has three major factions and multiple smaller ones like Caylon and the middle-eastern countries.. In those two regards 00 really breaks the mold that all the previous Gundam series have made.
Agree with this, they introduced a lot of different things to the franchise. The team aesthetic of CB and the tactical strategy they employ for every battle highlights their superiority. The suits in S1 are all the same central powered GN drive suits with different abilities that compliment each other. By S2 the suits evolve to be more adaptable to all kinds of combat... You see the Raiser, Archer Arios, Seravee and Seraphim, even Cherudim and moving shields. They also lost a lot.. They lost IN S1 ultimately with Lockon Neil dead and Allelujah captured WITH setsuna lost by himself
@@jamavra Now that you mention the tactics: Something that many people seem to overlook in light of the far flashier technological superiority of the Gundams are is Sumeragi's contribution. In the beginning the Gundams easily mop up enemies by taking them by surprise. They know exactly what to do and have precise plans and back-up plans and contingency plans for every conceivable situation, while the enemy is just thrown into the cold water, not having a clue how to react. And even when they know that a Gundam attack is like to come, they are still outmanouvered and outsmarted, in addition to being technologically outclassed. The best example is the attack on on Monaco... erm I mean Moralia. The Gundams are not just charching in like Berserkers, but following carefully layed out plans that maximise their impact in each area. And when something unexpected happens (i.e. Setsuna's clash with Al-Saaches) their tactical forecaster alters the plans and makes them switch to a different set of pre-prepared plans or sometimes even improvises later in the series. Thanks to those plans the Gundams are able to constantly keep the enemies on the backfoot and prevent them taking full advantage of their numbers. They even "disappear" for a time to surprisingly turn up right at the enemy's headquarters, bypassing at least some defenders elsewhere, again minimizing the effect of the enemy's superior numbers. How big of a component those tactical forecasts really are can be seen when they are matched in this field by Sumeragi's role model. Prior to that the Gundams only got in trouble when they didn't follow her plans. Real tactics being used is something that doesn't happen all that often in Gundam shows... or at least not something that's drawn much attention to. Most fights are all about the main characters smashing up other enemy units. Which is something that's both nice and not so nice in SEED. Because they have all those different weapon systems on the archangel and different ammunition for the missile launchers, opening up many tactical options and sometimes that leads to exactly that... but most of the time it's just shouting out technobabbel to re-used bits of animation. I really loved the episode where they did a silent run with La Flaga's sneak attack and almost took out the enemy ship with the positron beams.
@@Norbert_Sattler I guess my take is that these are still shows for teens and a young demographic and all the lessons Gundam teaches us the atrocities of war and how people should be able to communicate better. That's always been the core of any Gundam really. These nuances with tactical forecasting just makes the show a bit more mature and deals with some more adult problems. That and the team aesthetic and the way the show gives the team options to win but also the possibility of losing is there. That final Ribbons Vs Setsuna standoff was a stalemate really. Until the last charge, they both had a 50-50 chance of winning or losing. Remember, all the S2 Gundam's were beaten up by the end of that intense battle. Unlike Wing where you know Heero had the last shot of the Buster rifle going through a falling Libra debris. In Endless Waltz you knew that the last shot of the Buster rifle would end the Barton rule in an instant. Yes the other 3 were beaten and Nataku had an identity crisis lol
@@androyus I haven't watched SEED in quite some time and Destiny in even longer (and I don't think I want to re-watch the latter... ever) so I can't really say, but I'm pretty sure I remember that happening. Could be in one of the Izak vs. Kira fights before they landed on Earth the first time.
I'm one of the people that started Gundam with the alternate universes , started with Seed and yes I'm aware of 'JesusYamato' and no I'm not a diehard cult member, and let me say that seed and destiny had it's BS moments too. 00 took me by surprise since it really had a true impact and how the viewer sees the entire plot unfold. After that I then started the UC timeline and it was awesome
ShotsFired andMissed I started with 00 myself it wasn’t my favorite gundam series looking back at it. That has to go to zeta second favorite being IBO.
I started with Gundam Wing because of my father but by then I started to gravitate towards anyway 00 which really made me appreciate Gundam for myself. After that I went down the rabbit hole as well lol Edit: Didn't realize I left out "then"
I've yet to start with UC timeline. A bit intimidated but I will have to watch it soon :) But 00 and IBO are my favorites. Wing is my gateway drug, but Seed/Destiny was the teenager phase for me. The Build series is more of a guilty pleasure, and Unicorn was good on animation, but I learned what my limit is when it comes to drama in Anime :D
I'm personally a fan of both approaches to Gundam as long as they succeed at what their doing. 00 is unique in the fact that most of the staff, including the director, never worked on a Gundam series before and you can see that in the show, like how S1 is directly inspired by Wing while S2 by Zeta. But 00s success is that it has it's own identity while not feeling like a rip-off. Kind of the opposite of Seed which feels like a UC rip-off.
I always felt like Saji and Louise were a great foil for the "everyperson" in how the world making drastic changes around them impacts their lives and eventually them selves and relationships. Saji and Louise gave the show some much needed humanity and were the face for civilians.
@@1gnis1337 if you put yourself in saji's shoes a man who lived an ok life with an ok girlfriend and ok sister got dicked on so much when the Gundams appeared his girlfriend lost her family and an arm and his sister died for investigating said Gundams if this happened to you wouldn't you act the same way he did I know I would
@@1gnis1337 Saji's reaction to Celestial Being when he first meets them was perfect, he even goes as far as telling authorities (Sergei Smirnov) about it. But we all know the A-Laws are some big POS, and when Saji realizes he's involved other innocent people when the A-Laws attack the rebel base and gets the Bright Slap from Tieria, he does grow up just a bit. He still exudes simp energy though, even up until the end of the movie.
Just a future hint: Celestial Being trying to eradicate war and usher/boost the unification of the different world-nations in Season 1 is just one stage of Aeolia's grand plan. Season 2 will show you that there will be (big) bumps on the road of the said plan and then the movie will be the payoff of the plan. It is the "Dialogues to Come" as Aeolia mentioned in his speech in the very first episode of S1.
I enjoyed how 00 chose to go with a more modern vision of the future, from its use of the AD timeline to having multiple superpowers and independent states all on Earth to involving the politics of energy. While having all of mankind unite and colonize the far reaches of the universe is really cool and I enjoy a lot of shows and films based around that idea, nobody really sees that as a world that's right around the corner anymore.
SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays. It's styled like Super Robot Wars, but purely Gundam, and entirely devoid of anything Universal Century. It's also on PC in Steam too!
00 had some really good beats for me, though admittedly it was a let-down in many other ways. "Allelujah is just a good dude with some baggage" a staggering amount of baggage, really, and the split personality makes sense here, and lets him be that good dude, compartmentalizing what would otherwise be the utterly unviable amount of trauma he's been through My favorite part of S1, and what really ended up being the point of the whole season, was when the Meisters were almost, nearly denied total victory due to some absolutely brilliant strategy and crack piloting on the part of the opfor, which led every single one of them to nearly have a nervous breakdown as they had believed (justifiably) that they were utterly invincible. This leads to the actual secret reason for the existence of Celestial Being, that being to force the world powers to quit their petty squabbles and work together, the Meisters just had no idea that the plan was to force them to unite in order to stop the rampaging Gundams.
But the other plans within plans as seen in the side series and season 2 shows that even their founder knew there will be more obstacles( Ribbons and the hiding of the Twindrive plans respectively). As Schoenberg pulled a page from Asimov and made contingencies. The hilarious fact is Ribbons played the role of the Mule and caused his own downfall.
@Language and Programming Channel the Innovades weren't very convincing villains, the A-Laws are so one-dimensional, Trans-Am is now the "press X to win" button, and GN particles now allow you to use the public chat feature.
00 has two things going for it that you probably don't have context for, as you had to "be there", but- 1. It came out after the crushing disappointment of Seed Destiny, it basically had to restore the "good name" of Gundam and it succeeded by most measures (aside from commercial success in the West, but Gundam was already pretty nearly dead commercially overseas at that point anyhow.) 2. It's basically a better version of Wing. Remove nostalgia from the equation, and you can pretty much see that 00 does virtually everything Wing does, but much better and more believably. Wing is held in pretty high regard in most corners, but I feel like it's only because what it had to say about Gundam was new AT THE TIME. And it was the majority of the West's first exposure to Gundam as well, so of course people still love Wing. That said... again... 00 hits virtually all the same story beats and character archetypes as Wing and with a few exceptions, handles them with much more care and attention to detail.
I grew up with Wing but when I watched 00 it felt very Wing like. Unique Gundams, the enemies eventually making MP Gundam like suits or Gundam Killers.
I just finished watching both season and the movie a couple of days ago, it was actually my introduction to gundam and i absolutely adored it. Ive seen a lot of criticism towards gundam 00 and while i mostly agree with it i just cant deny how much invested i was in the series and how much fun i had with it. My main problem with gundam 00 would be the movie, its pretty weird. I enjoyed it but i feel like it lacks the kind of narrative that i loved so much in the first 2 seasons, characters were handled in a weird way and i feel like u could just stop watching at the end of the second season and that would be a better ending. But im really glad that u decided to make videos on it! looking forward to seeing u talking about the second season!
I am a big fan of 00, but even I can see the issues many have with it. Some are valid, and some fall into the difference of opinion. Either way never hurts me to hear someone say "Eh 00 isn't for me.". I think a lot of us in the West CLAMOURED for something better than Seed Destiny and that is probably what made 00 so hot in the U.S. for a time, even if in lieu of Toonami it was on SciFi channel and prone to edit cuts due to SciFi's abundant commercials, and run-time restrictions. It was still publically accessible without buying the DVD's first and of course the fan-sub community was hard at work as soon as the series launched. I think 00 tried to do some great stuff, but I think like many Anime doing the split season stuff back in the late 2000's, it wasn't handled well and executive demands on certain changes kind of mangled some of the storytelling. Not unlike Code Geass R2... seems Sunrise should notice this damning pattern.
Gundam 00 was my re introduction into Gundam. Found it by accident while watching G Gundam and absolutely loved the Cast and Mobile Suits. It's also Highlighted many of the current events that were happening at the time. I hope you enjoy Season 2.
00 was inspired by Zone Of the Enders and its Orbital Frame and LEV dynamic. Also in season 1 Saji and Louis are the Zeta mindset. Also we see Celestial being as what the organization is a tool.
As a person who never really got into the original gundam series (feels too much like a kids show to me) this is my first intro into the Gundam anime and it’s pretty cool so far. I enjoy that there are politics involved and it’s not just boom boom big robot smash.
@Waifu Kun There's a lot of tension in SEED battles, especially when Kira can only use Strike & Mu can only use Moebius & Skygrasper. Even when piloting Freedom, Kira's ass got kicked twice by the Druggies Gundams and had to be saved twice by Athrun/Justice. Most SEED detractors seem to (intentionally) forget that.
@Waifu Kun Wrong. Kira piloted Strike for first-half of the show (which means 25+ eps). And the parts where Kira/Freedom got his ass handed to him is more than one episodes but that's because not every episode is about Gundam battles.
@@androyus you want to see tension Watch Mikazuki vs the mobile armor or Lockon vs Ali Al Saachez. Even seeds "most tense" conflicts never come close to the highs in Zeta, IBO, Turn A, X, Victory Gundam, or the entirety of Chars Counterattack. The reason seed is hated is because its highs are average for gundams better series.
Glad you're finally getting to 00. Personally it is my favorite series and is good starter series I recommend to anyone but I do understand that it not be to everyone tastes while still being a solid series.
I remember it was around 2007 a local Fanzine in Peru published an article about gundam 00. I saw Gundam Wing several years ago but didn't saw another shows of the franchise (I watched some chapters of Seed, but didn't follow up for some reason). I decided to watch 00, and when the first season came to an end, I knew it deep inside me: Wing made me learn about gundam, but 00 made me fell in love with the franchise. 13 years later I have watched several sagas, including X and Victory gundam, and cannot help but feel grateful for each experience (even Seed and age have those moments i appreciate). It's like you say, Every series has its flavor, and one may be not be for you, but it could inspire many others to fell in love with the saga as I did. Sorry for the long text, saw the video and just started to write. Keep it up with the content, cheers!
I have fairly recently gotten into Gundam after years of secondhand info, and 00 is the one I decided to get into due to how mixed so many of the other shows seemed to have been received while 00 was fairly well recieved. I just got to season 2 as of writing this and I am enjoying it so much I mainly like it due to Celestial Being and what it represents and the people behind it and their motivations it speaks to me. It reminds me of times when I was younger and I though that the world should change for the better and wondered what it would be like to have the power to do so.
I missed the "season1" part of the title when I watched and was asking myself "did he watch season two" based on the commentary in the first third of the video. Then was asking myself" did he watch Wing when making his comments about how overpowered the gundams are?" until he stated he had not seen that. Not to spoil too much Boofire, but if you eventually get to Wing, but I dont think it will be your type of gundam either.
Asterquan honestly wing feels unwatchable in my opinion specially after watching 00. I really didn’t like art style and characters no one I felt I could be invested in.
@@inuclearpickle8628 Yeah. Wing was not my first introduction to the series, so when I finally watched it I was barely able to push through. It hasn't held up well, even compared to the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The characters failed to come across compellingly, the story just seemed so much better thought out in 00, and there wasn't a lot to make me feel invested. It's hard for me to fathom how the fanbase for Wing can be as devoted as it is; I guess a lot of that is probably the nostalgia that I didn't have going in.
Some people dont like the "Super Robot" aspect of shows like this. Most of the time they want a very character-centric, hellish realism of war like VOTOMS or something close to that nature. Every step has some sort of consequence that can impact the story in one way or another. Another thing to note is the antagonist, there are some shows that people would like to see the antagonists be very difficult to deal with/kill. When i mean the "Super Robot" aspect. i mean, flipping a switch in the middle of battle to change the outcome or proving that the main charecter is always right type of deal.
Everyone has their own tastes, while 00 doesn’t look bad I think it can be good. People can prefer different things, for me, I enjoy wing and is one of my favorite shows in gundam, and IBO. And for universal Century, I would say that likely Gundam Thunderbolt is my favorite, with maybe either unicorn or the 08th ms team behind it. Just people prefer different things.
Huh as someone who's actually been a fan of Gundam for about 6 years now but only recently watched 00, I actually ended up loving it a lot. I'd def agree it's perfect for a newcomer though. I'll just say S2 is a lot more character driven. You get a good amount more of the side characters, and without spoiling anything I'll just say I loved seeing Allelujah, Soma, Saji, and especially Louise's growth. Like Louise alone might have one of my fave character arcs in Gundam, I dare say it's Gundam at its core. I look forward to seeing your vid on s2 if you make one. I'd say it has a lot more of the "setting effecting the character".
Welp now we're here. Will admit my comment about Innovators and how they're handled could've been... better, on the Unicorn video, but I'll save that comment for season 2. Season 1 is a favorite of mine though, and I like what it does. The mech design is right up my alley and I will forever stand by the idea that GN Drives are the best power source in the franchise (aside from some of the shenanigans they get up to in S2). And Lockon is probably my favorite in S1... S2 is... SOMETHING to be discussed though. But we'll get there when we get there.
Comparing 00 to IBO, they both have similar themes to it, though honestly, 00 has a special place to my heart and I pretty much enjoyed it more since it's one of the Gundam shows that I watched, it was my 2nd entry to the series, Wing being the 1st. I assume that after season 2, you're gonna go for Wing?
I really love 00. I love the style and story telling. The characters fit very well too. Probably why I like ibo too. Although ibo feels more personal to me though. To me I love them because those aus are very different. They play with the rules of gundam. They add diversity with the core message.
Gundam 00 is the kind of series I like most... As you said, "A matter of taste I suppose". I very much like the sense that a character can change the world around them. This doesn't mean the 00 style is the best way to do this, but its a start. The ideal setup, is not for characters to produce change on their own, but to instead create what could be considered an "Alliance Victory"... They win over as many allies as they can to defend against the enemy, and then start winning over the enemy's allies by instead of demanding something of the loser of the war, offer to help rebuild. The best ending for a war, is for those in the opposing faction who want what's best for their people to turn on those in their faction who merely want war.
The four Gundams represented the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, so them being overpowered makes sense for what their goal is, they are the Four Horsemen after all. The appearance of Exia represented the horsemen of War, which starts the Apocalypse or Military Intervention,. A lot of the Gundams and their upgraded versions are all named from Angels from different religions. Its humans race vs. deities, they should be OP.
It's been explained that the reason why Celestial Brings Gundams are basically the same design. Is because everything they have, has been manufactured entirely in space, and with limited funding and personnel. Plus being limited to 5 initial GN Drives. Resulted their "copy-paste" method. It saved resources, and whatever they could recycle from previous Mobile Suits, they did. It took them 250 years to get ready for ther introduction, and even scouting a proper team took them another 30 or so. For me. That's what I liked. That they were doing what they were doing, with what they had and making decisions. Hard decisions leading up to Season 2, on how exactly they were going to spend those resources. It's why I took them 4 and a half years to bounce back even.
Gundam 00 was my introduction to anime, It wasn't truely my very 1st gundam (that honor goes to After War Gundam X) it was the anime that got me hooked to Gundam and Anime as a whole
When you Categorised the types of Gundam shows you forgot one This hand of mine glows with an awesome POWER! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow! SHINING FINGER!
I agree with you, I was referring to how as a show G Gundam is very different to most other shows, like being a super robot show with some shonen tropes. I think of G Gundam as a one off show and as a vacation from other normal Gundams but is still very much a Gundam show
As someone generally new to Gundam (honestly I'm mostly here for the gunpla), I came to a lot of similar conclusions about the series overall quality. The in-depth politics and reasonable actions among all the different characters and factions puts me in mind of all my favorite parts of my favorite anime of all time, Code Geass. One of the big sticking points between Gundam franchise and I is that Gundam plots tend to get melodramatically sanctimonious about war being bad. From where I stand, war is just organized fighting, no more, no less. So to specifically state that fighting is particularly bad only after exceeding a certain threshold of scale and coordination often seems to miss the point that small "wars" happen all around us and yet no one bats an eye until it starts looking like a nuke went off (hmm...). So on one side you have Celestial Being essentially taking the theme of Gundam to its logical conclusion and literally declare war on war. But then the world immediately distrusts them and responds to their actions in ways that you could actually see happening if somebody tried to pull that same stunt IRL. And yet the members of Celestial Being remain sincere in their desire to make the world better for highly individualized reasons. All those ideas put together in the same series makes this the first Gundam series I've tried to get into that seemed to understand that fractures in the convoluted web of globalist politics aren't gonna' go away overnight with a few kumbayas and worldwide hand-holding. Try to take over the world, no matter how noble your reasoning sounds, and you're gonna' get some push back, and not even from necessarily bad people. What kind of idiot trusts an independent orbitally-stationed PMC with exclusive access to experimental technology powerful enough to glass a third-world country? It's like the writer is saying, "sure, war is bad, but what're *you* gonna' do about it, genius?" SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 BELOW ...Less insightful was the ending that suggested that, if humans only had psychic powers, we would never go to war. Laughs in Warhammer 40K, wherein the most dangerous and powerful warmongers in the entire series are either extremely powerful psychics themselves, employers of extremely powerful psychics, or the eldritch anthropomorphism of emotions that manifest in reality via extremely powerful psychics. ...Well, except for the Tau, who have no psychics at all and make up for it with their army of giant robots- okay, NOW I'm beginning to see the Gundam parallels.
It wasnt just a good series, it helped revitalized the whole franchise after the seed mess. To this day, 00 is one of the biggest financial successes in Gundam history.
3:19 ish that was the OG Gundam, where Char and other Zakus could wail on the RX 78-2 and do nothing. If Amuro was a trained pilot the first few arcs would of played the same
I think when someone Liked Wing, they have a higher chance of liking 00? I started with Wing, then a few gundam series after, comes 00. I loved 00 like I loved wing.
I have a minor nitpick that always annoyed me and that is ali al saachez's name. al saachez (الساجيس) is not a real word or name in arabic and i think they wanted to use the word al shaares (الشرس) which means vicious but couldn't pronounce it or something.
DrMayor It wouldn’t be the first time Gundam did something like this Round Bear becomes Londo Bell Charles Asnavour becomes Char Aznable And Bring Stability becomes Bring Stabbity.
00 wasnt my first gundam series (started with wing) but it is currently my favorite overall. I love the concept of starting off with characters that are kind of hard to like and rough around the edges that we start to learn more about and grow with over time (looking at you Heero you murderous bastard). For both wing and 00 the ones who kept me invested early were the down to earth nicer members of the teams, duo and lockon. The shows then began to spread out with the politics and world views of the opposing factions and protagonists in a way that drew me in and made binge sections where I had to know what happened next. Season 2 of 00 I really enjoyed as well, though fav moment overall is from season 1 when setsuna and tiera team up against the Thrones. That marked the moment for me where I was fully invested in the show and hyped as all hell for the gundam meisters. I havent seen the movie yet, mainly because I really liked how the show ended and felt like anything past that would just kind of be needless tack on (same for endless waltz, also dont like the waltz versions of the gundams). Overall 00 provided an experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and would watch again, it's a shame I started Seed right after lol.
I watched this ten years ago and absolutely loved it as a 13 year old. I revisited it twenty days ago and I only liked the Mobile Suits. Especially the Flags, the only character I rooted for was Graham Aker, he was the Char of that generation, standing up to the Gundams in inferior machinery.
I dont think I've seen you make a video yet for 08th MS Team, but if you get a chance to see the series, I think you'll really enjoy it. It's older (97-ish) and set in the ground war of UC, so it's not as slick as modern anime tends to be, but I actually enjoy it because of those reasons. It's more of a character-driven military story than most Gundam series, and it deals with a standard MS infantry unit with standard line units. It doesn't get bogged down in what happens so often in Gundam series, the "shiniest robot is the best" mentality.
"soo long as they do their own thing like 00 and don't crib from other series like SEED" 00: *cribs heavily from Wing and is very happy boofire watched them in the wrong order*
Ahhh I can't wait for a video review of Season 2! I don't say that in a bad or good way (unlike with Destiny where we knew it was about to hit the fan), but there'll certainly be more for you discuss!
Season 2 is a little better because they aren’t as powerful anymore and we do go into the antagonist characters a little more. It also tells how celestial being changed the world . Although I do feel that they cheaper lock-on but I’ll be looking forward to your season 2 video 😄 this is my favorite series in the Gundam franchise next to IBO mainly because of how cool the suits are anyways looking forward to the next one
At beginning i liked Gundam 00, and quite enjoyed the episode when the 4 gundams were outnumbered by simple "grunts" and the Thrones saved them. But somehow, i have a limit to the disbelief... I am not sure how to explain. The episode when the Trinity brothers were killed, to me, simply made no sense. It looked like an old fashioned lame plot device, to give a Gundam to Ali al saachez. When Alleluia was killed, at the end of the first season, i kinda hoped the series could "recover" some sense. When his twin brother was rescued, that hope shattered. In the First season, the so called celestial beings kept saying that to become a Gundam pilot you had to train all your life, be better than anyone else, and so on. Also, they said that Alleuia was recruited when he was little and since then he did not talked to his family. But at the beginning of the second season. they rescue from the prison the twin brother of a dead pilot, that was a terrorist who placed bombs. He says to them that he don't know even how to pilot a Ms. Their answer is: you will learn, you must be the pilot of this gundam cause your Brother piloted the earlier model of that Gundam. After that i dropped the series for real.
Gundam OO was a great anime But the one thing that bothered me was the allelujah/hallelujah subplot Like i was hoping this split personality was going to screw up a mission that will haunt celestial being later in the series And then they killed off hallelujah but later brought him back to life and was only brought up for intense one off fight
So basically, you personally didn't prefer it, but understood that the decisions they took in mecha design, factions, characters and story, all served the story thag was being coveyed here.
I was only 2 years old when this show aired in Japan and safe to say I love it despite many flaws like the lacks of focus for other characters like Sergei or Soma and the Gundams is basically more super robots than real robots but I still love them nonetheless.
I am a big 00 fan and 00 is my favorite in the Gundam series. In my personal tastes, it hit all the right marks and made me truly love the series. It was my 4th Gundam series to watch after Wing, then G Fighter, but in between those two was the 3 part movie of Gundam 79 (original Gundam, I call it that cause it came out in 1979 and took place in U.C. 0079). Then I watched S.E.E.D. and S.E.E.D. Destiny... Lockon is the greatest character, the best bro, the greatest guy you will ever meet if given the chance. I really enjoy MOST of the cast for the A.D. era. Again, MOST, there's a reason why and you shall...sadly see it when watching season 2. Fun fact, Setsuna is Amuro, Dearka, and Quatre. He really likes potato chips...for some weird reason.
I'm seven episodes in to 00, which is doing absolutely nothing for me, man. I still haven't gotten to the point yet in this series where there is even an antagonist, so I'm trying to suspend judgment until I finish, but I agree with your initial assessment that it's just basically Exia one-shot slashing through everything like butter, and big beam rays hosing entire armies. I might as well just be watching someone play Dynasty Warriors Gundam. In Zeta and '79, even in the Gundam, the protagonists are consistently challenged and often defeated by a plucky adversary. I kinda skipped ahead and heard about the GN drive system, so I'm not expecting much on that front. Like you said, no tension in the fights. The only time there has been genuine tension so far was when the guy was trying to save those passengers from falling in to the gravity well. To contrast, one of my favorite sequences in Zeta is when Quattro in the Hyaku Shiki is trying desperately to prevent two vastly superior pilots in vastly superior mobile suits from sabotaging a colony laser, and then trying to shake his pursuers. I really hope 00 isn't this way all the way through. It's kind of....boring.
Technological superiority can mean a lot. If we were to pit a modern jet fighter against, say, the Red Baron(as one of the most infamous fighters in the past), there's good odds the modern jet fighter would likely murderstomp the Red Baron. And that's a difference of only two or three decades. Gundam 00 is essentially what happens if we dropped a well supplied modern jet fighter squadron in the middle of WWII and told them to just "kill everyone, run before things get too dangerous". EDIT: That being said though, you may hate Season Two. It's a lot more Super Robot from that point forwards. EDIT 2: Oh, right, Setsuna is bog standard normal in Season One, and Tieria... That'd be spoilers for Season 2. Allelujah is the only "Super Pilot", but even so, it isn't really apparent until the end.
@@ashleymesser6792 I'll go look them up, thanks! EDIT: So I just looked them up, and even saw a comparison between the Mitsubishi Zero(which, to be fair, isn't fair, since the Zero apparently started calling behind it's other WWII contenders) and the F14 Tomcat... Yeah, just two or three decades is enough to create quite the tech gap.
I totally agree that 00 works better as a gateway Gundam anime, as it was my first main series Gundam, since I started off by watching Build Divers. But despite that I still love 00, whilst it takes second place to me behind IBO, I still think it's a great show. I also think Setsuna is the best example of a protagonist whose more, robotic. Compared to over stoic characters like Hiro and Mika, his reasoning for being more lacking of emotions than someone like Lockon, makes sense. And I'm saying this as someone who still thinks Mika is a cool character, but I understand why some people might not
00 was my first Gundam so I have a certain nostalgia for it, but it never drew me into Gundam more than the want to play SRW V with knowledge of the series represented. I've already got Universal Century up to Crossbone behind me.
Well, damn. You're making me want to give 00 another shot. I saw the first couple episodes, and I really didn't care for it. It reminded me of Wing, but... not as good. I think I completely tuned out when the leader of Celestial Being was monologueing on the bridge of her ship to no one in particular. Just shouting on her bridge for no real reason. But, hey, maybe I'll up it to five episodes and see if it wins me over. After I finish IBO. Seed has pretty much lost me, after about 12 episodes... Also, we can agree on one thing. Lockon was the best. As much as I didn't care for the other characters, he won me over almost instantly.
My first gundam was wing, it was terrible didn't watch another for years, then for some reason I watched 00 when it first came out, Loved it, since then I've watched Origin, 0079, all the igloos, war in the pocket, ms 8th team, zeta, double zeta, f91, stardust, chars counter attack, unicorn, narrative. G saviour, g fighter, victory, turn a, iron blooded, starsgazer, half of seed ( i just can't abide that one but I will get it under my belt one day), after war, ive read Crossbone, I've watched wing again to see if i think any better of it the answer is no its still terrible, I now own 3 animation cells and at least 30 gunplas and have a gundam tshirt collection (14 and counting). All because of 00, which I am actually watching again right now because its been like 13 years since I watched it, its still awesome, I'll be watching thunderbolt when I'm done with series 2 and awakening.
Gundam 00 is a good series especially since no character is as awful as Jesus Kun from Seed! I for one am a fan of Setsuna but I'll also say Lockon was one awesome character as well.
Well 00 is way better than Seed/Destiny and G no Reconsideringmylifedecisions and AGE but AGE is technically better than the two I mentioned and AGE is just lost potential.
00 has my favorite Gundam. The 00 Raiser. Still don't like the GN Drive engines, however the Raiser makes them a lot less obvious. (I just don't like big bulky engines poking out the backs ok?) My favorite scene was Setsuna and Tieria (SP?) vs The Thrones. Those two were fucking terrifying and if Lockon hadn't stopped them when he did the threat of The Thrones would have been ended much sooner.
I don't necessarily agree with fights involving gundams having no tension. It's same as with superman. Their stakes are not in whether they win but rather whether they can accomplish their desires goal without ton of collateral damage.
I like series where the characters change the settings, there you can see intelligent, active characters and their strategies, where you can see the consequences of their actions on the great scale, instead of seeing insignificant personal drama. I mean personal drama is necessary, it's what motivates the characters, what pushes them to extreme actions, but it can't be the main focus, not in a story about war, war is something that affects thousands, if not millions of people, it can't be reduced to the troubles of just one character. P.S: Celestial Being hypocrisy was only superficial, they didn't plan to eradicate war just by beating everyone in the battlefield, their goal was to unify mankind by becoming the common enemy, forcing all factions to join forces to beat them.
And to be publicly routed while the shadow teams in the sidelines help do the hard work of maintaining the cohesion. But then Ribbons Almark had to be the Mule of the plan and mess it up for a few years( a reference to Asimov's foundation book series).
Boofire "I like Lockon" also Boofire "I haven't seen season 2 yet" oh no...
Technically it's not the same Lockon so it's ok that he likes the first one.
I was about to make the exact same comment.
My thoughts exactly. Oh he ain’t gonna like season 2
I feel the change in season 2 was necessary to keep the weight of Lockon's death in season 1. Also, the way the others treated him would be hard to take for a real person.
@@hitandruncommentor he's gonna lose his shit, we need a live a reaction video for the reveal 😂😂

Gundam 00 tech is based on the Zone Of the Enders Orbital Frame and Lev dynamic in season 1.

The first season anyway. The second season sort of backpedals on its concept and it starts following more traditional Gundam tropes.
Oh man back when multiple channels had anime blocks.
@@Kosenator not to mention they take a jab at the US when the Union says “hey that’s our job”
Both sides of a battle are not ever put in a situation where someone comes and slaughters both of them and the governments running them are told "Stop going to war and you will stop losing millions if not billions of dollars,"
Celestial Being can't have mobile suits that are just slightly better because that won't suffice.
Your response is ... PERFECT. This is why I also love 00

Thank you. Seriously, as someone who loved the F out of 00 and understood fully what it was trying to accomplish . . . Thank you.
One thing that I found a refreshing change compared to other Gundam series though is that 00 didn't retread the usual "Earth vs.
@@jamavra Now that you mention the tactics:
Something that many people seem to overlook in light of the far flashier technological superiority of the Gundams are is Sumeragi's contribution.
Question: when did a beam saber glance off PSA during SEED & Destiny?
@@androyus I haven't watched SEED in quite some time and Destiny in even longer (and I don't think I want to re-watch the latter... ever) so I can't really say, but I'm pretty sure I remember that happening.

After that I went down the rabbit hole as well lol
Edit: Didn't realize I left out "then"
My first exposure was an episode of G-Wing but the series that caused me to fall doan the rabbit hole was 0080: War in the Pocket.
I would say alot of people in America started with alternate universe Gundam shows.
I've yet to start with UC timeline. A bit intimidated but I will have to watch it soon :)
But 00 and IBO are my favorites.

Basically Sheinburg pulled a foundation and used Asimov to his advantage.
I enjoyed how 00 chose to go with a more modern vision of the future, from its use of the AD timeline to having multiple superpowers and independent states all on Earth to involving the politics of energy. While having all of mankind unite and colonize the far reaches of the universe is really cool and I enjoy a lot of shows and films based around that idea, nobody really sees that as a world that's right around the corner anymore.

a staggering amount of baggage, really, and the split personality makes sense here, and lets him be that good dude, compartmentalizing what would otherwise be the utterly unviable amount of trauma he's been through
My favorite part of S1, and what really ended up being the point of the whole season, was when the Meisters were almost, nearly denied total victory due to some absolutely brilliant strategy and crack piloting on the part of the opfor, which led every single one of them to nearly have a nervous breakdown as they had believed (justifiably) that they were utterly invincible.

00 has two things going for it that you probably don't have context for, as you had to "be there", but-
1. It came out after the crushing disappointment of Seed Destiny, it basically had to restore the "good name" of Gundam and it succeeded by most measures (aside from commercial success in the West, but Gundam was already pretty nearly dead commercially overseas at that point anyhow.)

Don’t get high hopes for Wing, it is pretty much 00, but every strength that 00 managed to do with its story, is absent in Wing.
As a person who never really got into the original gundam series (feels too much like a kids show to me) this is my first intro into the Gundam anime and it’s pretty cool so far. I enjoy that there are politics involved and it’s not just boom boom big robot smash.
I'm not sure it's true there's no tension, they're challenged quite a lot by the aces of each of the factions in the series.
@@androyus you want to see tension
Watch Mikazuki vs the mobile armor or Lockon vs Ali Al Saachez.
Even seeds "most tense" conflicts never come close to the highs in Zeta, IBO, Turn A, X, Victory Gundam, or the entirety of Chars Counterattack.
The reason seed is hated is because its highs are average for gundams better series.
@@V2ULTRAKill I'm not arguing which shows has better tension. I'm arguing that SEED *has* tension. Full stop.
@@androyus and im arguing by gundam standards that tension is so lax it may as well be nonexistent.
Gundam 00 is my favourite one, after that Zeta.
@@inuclearpickle8628 Looking back on Wing, it feels like a complete hot mess, and that OO was in a lot of ways a remake/repair of that show.
@@TaleSeeker and then IBO sorta took ideas from both and nearly perfected the outsider group with gundams setup
Gundam 00 is one of my favourite Gundam series. Awesome video.
Glad ya enjoyed 00! It is my favorite Gundam series, so I am glad to see it get some love. Just know that 00 season 2 is very divisive
Honestly don't understand how this isn't everyone's favorite Gundam
Some people dont like the "Super Robot" aspect of shows like this. Most of the time they want a very character-centric, hellish realism of war like VOTOMS or something close to that nature. Every step has some sort of consequence that can impact the story in one way or another. Another thing to note is the antagonist, there are some shows that people would like to see the antagonists be very difficult to deal with/kill. When i mean the "Super Robot" aspect. i mean, flipping a switch in the middle of battle to change the outcome or proving that the main charecter is always right type of deal.
Gundam_NeonOmen
Because Turn A exists.
Kris M. Yeah, that’s my favourite series out of all the franchise.
Cuz Zeta is superior in every way
Everyone has their own tastes, while 00 doesn’t look bad I think it can be good.
When it comes to newtypes in this show for season 1 its only tiere and allejuah because of quantam brainwaves(the real newtypes somewhat)
They imply something is special about Setsuna and Tieria can talk to the computer I’m forgetting the name of. So his point is an accurate one.

@Joshua Ngau Ajang or more realisticaly to keep people form targeting it's solar panels
Wait for season 2.
I also want more Lockon and Graham. Those 2 need their own buddy cop series. Love characters that freely express emotion.
Its humans race vs. deities, they should be OP.
this gundam was my introduction in fact and i completely loved it. and it was the catalyst which converted me into a mecha fan
Oo is what got me into Gundam I had seen others Gundams before but this is what truly hooked me
You are going to LOVE season 2... It flips to character centric and them dealing with HOW they changed the world.
When you Categorised the types of Gundam shows you forgot one
This hand of mine glows with an awesome POWER! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!
SHINING FINGER!
in a way, that one falls into the conflict changing the character's and forcing them to grow
I agree with you, I was referring to how as a show G Gundam is very different to most other shows, like being a super robot show with some shonen tropes. I think of G Gundam as a one off show and as a vacation from other normal Gundams but is still very much a Gundam show
Innovators are newtypes, and innovades and super soldiers are the cyber newtypes
I like 00 because it feels like a second draft of Wing. It's not new but it's refined and polished.
00 and ZZ are some of my favorites
It's like the writer is saying, "sure, war is bad, but what're *you* gonna' do about it, genius?"
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 BELOW
...Less insightful was the ending that suggested that, if humans only had psychic powers, we would never go to war.
SEED and SEED Destiny is the only other Gundam show more successful than 00.
I’m pretty sure SEED brought back the mecha genre in the 2000s. Like the 90s were pretty dry with the exception of Evangelion
Gundam 00 has more realistic character names than most Gundam series, but still... We got a dude named Shaman Descartes.

I am a big fan of 00 back in the day. I feel like ibo has gotten to top of my best au shows list recently but still appreciate the work 00 did.
You are correct about gundam 00 as introduction gundam series. Thanks for sharing your thought. 👍
1:53 THANK YOU. I finally found someone else that likes the Flag as much as I do.
But I totally agree. 00 was my introduction to Gundam, and still remains my favorite series just based on pure nostalgia.
The flag is the best designed pre gundam grunt unit and in universe it was seen as the best mech before the gundams
I really enjoyed Gundam 00. It was different than the UC which is my favorite. I enjoyed your review, and honesty.
One of my favorite mech animes tbh. Just the story for me. And the concept is great IMO. lockon being my fav
Yeah. It was my first full start to finish gundam series, so I loved it
"soo long as they do their own thing like 00 and don't crib from other series like SEED"
00: *cribs heavily from Wing and is very happy boofire watched them in the wrong order*
To be fair 00 did wing's entire thing better than wing.
Ahhh I can't wait for a video review of Season 2! I don't say that in a bad or good way (unlike with Destiny where we knew it was about to hit the fan), but there'll certainly be more for you discuss!
A few people do not like the second season, but given your critique you may actually like the second season. I liked the second part.
Gundam OO was a great anime
But the one thing that bothered me was the allelujah/hallelujah subplot
Like i was hoping this split personality was going to screw up a mission that will haunt celestial being later in the series
And then they killed off hallelujah but later brought him back to life and was only brought up for intense one off fight
The orbital elevator and the first "meeting" between Hallelujah and Soma( nice dystopia reference).
The complete opposite for me. I think this kind of narrative works for me. In my opinion, this is the best gundam season ever released
Gundum 00 was my frist gundum I watched since wing. I loved gundum 00
I just finished my rewatch of s1 so this was a perfect start to my lunch break
I’ve always enjoyed world building over character development it’s probably why I like 00 so much.
Lockon 1.0 > Lockon 2.0, and that's a fact.
Double 00 was the show which got me into gundam
Red Baron is WW1 so it would be more like a century of difference

EDIT: So I just looked them up, and even saw a comparison between the Mitsubishi Zero(which, to be fair, isn't fair, since the Zero apparently started calling behind it's other WWII contenders) and the F14 Tomcat... Yeah, just two or three decades is enough to create quite the tech gap.
I honestly believe you can watch Gundam 00 season 1 and stop there and have a great story. For some reason season 2 felt like more of an afterthought

I'm going to dust off my 00 DVD and watch it for maybe the 3rd or 4th time.
My first gundam was wing, it was terrible didn't watch another for years, then for some reason I watched 00 when it first came out, Loved it, since then I've watched
Origin, 0079, all the igloos, war in the pocket, ms 8th team, zeta, double zeta, f91, stardust, chars counter attack, unicorn, narrative.
Yo is there an Awakening of the Trailblazer critique? Super interested to hear your take on it. The whole alien thing came out of left field.
00 has my favorite Gundam. The 00 Raiser. Still don't like the GN Drive engines, however the Raiser makes them a lot less obvious.
(I just don't like big bulky engines poking out the backs ok?)
My favorite scene was Setsuna and Tieria (SP?) vs The Thrones.
Season 2 is definitely going to be a mixed bag for you!
My initial thoughts on 00 is it reminded me of Gundam Wing
