      The Leo is a good suit! It only gets it's ass kicked because it gets put into the meat grinder when they are sent against the Gundams. @@RayFChung Yea, pretty much anytime any of the grunts are brought up, the Leo is far and away one of the best grunts you can use from a military perspective. From the entire series as a whole, its still one of the best you can take barring stuff like the GN-X. Its cheap, easy to produce, and most importantly: VERY flexible. Need beam weapons: can do it out of the box. Long range support? There is a pack for that. Heavy weapons? Sure! Need it to fly? It can do it. Go to space? No problem. Dakka? Need More!
      Leos just get fodderized cause of the Gundams. When they are up against anything else, thing is stupid formidable.

    In the Endless Waltz manga, Deikun says he picked up Mariemaia from the street. But in the prequel manga, Episode Zero, an injured Treize meets his nurse, Mariemaia's mother. Just goes to show how contrived and overly coincidental Wing's stories really are. Really, the big reveals, the real story, was almost always reserved for the manga.

      Gundam is a rare anime where it's anime first then manga where most anime are instead based on the manga. So the manga tries to flesh out what the anime overlooked due to time or other reasons.

    • @davekaye5483
      @davekaye5483 3 роки тому +11

      Yeah, the issue I have with Wing's manga is that everyone knows or is related to everyone else, like Trant Clark all of a sudden magically being Heero's uncle, or making Catherine Bloom into Trowa's long-lost sister. It just gets super forced and ultra convenient. We see similar laziness in Frozen Teardrop, where all the main characters are basically mini versions of the old cast members instead of being fleshed out as their own characters (though Quatre's stand-in is a girl, "Quaterine,". Even the name shows how little effort was put into coming up with new characters!).

    • @jedimika
      @jedimika 3 роки тому +10

      My take on Mariemaia was that she was the baby that OG Trowa shows No-Name. As the baby was a Barton and the Barton's were the antagonists of EW. Dekim just lied to her, and manipulated her. The Trieze connection being a lie to make her more marketable.

    • @davekaye5483
      @davekaye5483 3 роки тому +9

      @@jedimika That's how I originally understood it, too, but then the prequel manga tries to argue that the Barton who was her mother was Treize's nurse whom he fathered the child with, to force that connection, and in the EW manga, as MSGSlayer1 says, Dekim picked her from the street. So we have two different manga explanations, and a movie explanation that can go one of three ways depending on how contrived you want to make the story. Sadly, GotL goes with some pretty contrived and forced stuff where everyone is now everyone else's mother's father's sister's brother's dog's maid's roommate.

      Big no. I have read all of Glory of the Losers. All the backstory and side stuff they add in has the problems the OG wing series did, where it was a series of points with nothing connecting them narratively. This can be seen with Treize. He had a brother or cousin or something that was going to/did pilot the Tallgeese and somehow ended up dying, and Treize has blueprints for Epyon and Tallgeese III at the very beginning. We don't see anthing actually happen, it's never actually talked about in full, you just infer snippets.
      What's worse, is that the events of Wing get the same treatment, but harsher to the point that you have to have seen the original series for the manga to make sense. Can't recall direct examples, but the manga sometimes jumps around to different points depicted in the series that are heavily abbreviated in the manga.

      @@infinityfringe Here's an example: In the anime Heero self destructs and is taken by Trowa to the circus, both being around each other forces them to have some good development (we see Trowa laugh for Christ sakes). Heero goes on an emotional journey where he takes responsibility for the death of Marshal Noventa and tries to find redemption before fighting Zechs in Antarctica.
      Here's how the manga does it; Heero self destructs, Trowa takes him to Antarctica (he's joined Oz for some reason?) & Heero and Zechs instantly fight.
      Glory of the Losers is the cliff notes of Gundam Wing and they don't cover all the important stuff, just the fights. That's why people like it better, because they have more robot fights 😑

      IBO Season 1 was fantastic. Season 2 on the other hand was a disappointment. If it weren't supposed to be a continuation of what came before, it'd be much better. However, as it stands it essentially reset most of the characters, or transformed them into seemingly different ones. A lot of the ideas it introduced could have worked, but were executed poorly with little respect for the characters.
      Two big examples being Orga and McGillis. Was Biscuit's death so meaningless to Orga that a mere two years later he goes back to the same behavior as before, risking it all for a shot at something bigger? It worked in season 1 because Tekkadan had nothing and were fighting for their lives, and through their grit and sheer luck they pulled through. This time they had no such need and the stars weren't aligned in their favor. McGillis in season 1 was the guy with a plan, season 2 would have you believe his plans culminated in a simple armed revolution based on misguided notions of symbolism and myth.
      And that's just two characters, let alone the drop in quality in the fights (narratively and technically, animation was still good if not better in places). The attention to detail season 1 puts on the battle plans and how every type of unit is important is almost non-existent in season 2.
      I could literally go on about this for hours, in fact I've been drafting a full break-down of the whole situation, but that's not for here.

    Over 20 years after Wing came out, the world is a lot more divided politically than it was back in the mid 90s, and we're facing a fear of nuclear extermination not seen ever since the height of the cold war. So to me the show's politics come off as being at Santa Claus levels of fantasy. I get that it's a positive and optimistic view on the future, and that's valid, but right now it's not at all realistic.
    All in all, once again thanks for making those reviews! You've earned yourself a new subscriber!

      There is a story about it.
      It feels like a filler episode it pretty much has to write Heero out of character to explain why the Wing-Zero looks different (No joke, his motivation was the same as, say, a car-owner who just wanted to mod his car for the heck of it).
      They really just should've made it so that the Wing-Zero gets heavily damaged during the events of Battlefield of the pacifist which in turn forces Heero to not just repair it but also upgrade it in case something like the Scorpie comes along again.

    After watching Gundam Wing series, you need to read Episode Zero Manga, then insert Blind Target, then Endless Waltz.
    In Glory of Losers, the retelling of the GW series connects the events from before they started to go against Operation Meteor. Mind you, there will be lots of TIMESKIPS that are quite obvious in the GoL manga, these skips are shown instead in the anime.
    Also, the OVA/Movie animation of Endless Waltz is freaking beautiful.

    There are things (mostly logistics) in Wing's setting/lore that kind of put me off of it, but that was my main gripe with the show and EW. 00 handled the setting in a way where troop losses felt significant, the Earth looked and felt enormous, and the aesthetics of each faction made following along with the conflicts intuitive.
    Other than that, EW definitely did an interesting job tackling its own questions. Also points for not falling back on solving all the world's problems with a god particle.

    I always took Dakim's remark at the final confrontation to mean that Mariemaya was just some nameless orphan he happened to pick up and groomed into believing she was Treize's daughter, something he could easily go off and do again if something happened to her, making her just a disposable figurehead. It seemed pretty spelled out from the dub line, which is all I've heard it in, to be fair, but for exactly that reason, I always found Mariemaya to be the best part of this OVA. A real tragic antagonist, driven purely out of aspirations to live up to a name and legacy that isn't even hers, used as a pawn in her 'underlings' schemes.

    Can't really remember enough of wing nor the OVA's to give proper commentary but usually I need to rewatch a series to really get the point of what it's trying to do although.
    Wing never really stuck for me except for Treize who I found fascinating as a character, still from your Gundam reviews it usually gives me more things to appreciate when i plan to revisit a series.
    You really know how and what to say and while I can understand some basic things about politics and philosophy it flies over my head at times what I am supposed to understand from the stories.
    Looking forward to see you review AGE and Turn A for example although Turn A is best watched after having seen pretty much everything of UC and Wing, X and G Gundam.

      AGE's 100 Year War and generations concept is great but it was a first time for the writer who prior to tv he wrote for games. Originally it was meant to have 75 episodes, that's 3 seasons to cover the whole story. AGE on paper is great but it needs a proper execution and the writer admit his shortcomings.

    A weird connection I like between Endless Waltz and Pokemon. The big bag of pokemon Gen 5 kinda looks like Mr. Mustache in Endless Waltz, and both take a random kid and indoctrinate them with an unwarranted sense of self importance as a figurehead for their nefarious power-grab.

    I think you misunderstand what Dekim means when he says they can make a "new Mariemaia," as he's implying that they can simply make a new figurehead for their reign as that's literally all she was for the coup; a face for the army. Also, Tireze's relationship was a one-off fling when he was younger (I think 17?) so he may not have been either 100% aware or it was a past he had to put behind him in pursuit of his ideals.

    While it's never directly mentioned that Treze has a family he does say that despite him not being able to return the feelings that lady une has for him has caused her to have split personalities, so perhaps it can be assumed that despite her 100% devotion being a man of honor he stays loyal to his existing family. Also the wings on zero where definitely made for an extremely dramatic entrance and visual that quickly faded because it was so impractical. They made of been a nkd to the song "the wings of a boy that killed adolescence" which was from the shows soundtrack. The wings on deathsythe were a bit over the top but not nearly as impractical since they offered protection and probably worked to help the suits anti-detection systems making it a more lethal and survivable close combat suit.

    Marimeia, was a daughter of the family to the man that Trowa killed (cant remember if it was his niece) and in that took his name because the original Trowa was the original pilot of the heavy arms. Marimeia was lied to that she was the daughter of Triez Marquise. They needed her family money to fund the Army used in the movie...... I hope this makes sense.

    Glory of the Losers is definitely a fun ride. It effectively follows alot of the same story beats as the original show but the pacing and overall structure is alot better than the TV series. Showing more backstory and some of the more unanswered questions that never got answered in either the show or Endless Waltz definitely helped in its favour too, like why Wufei always refers to his Gundam as "Nataku" for example. Sure if you read other source material for Wing you'd find out the answer at the time but to not have it in the show always felt odd to me, it was just nice to have that in Glory of the Losers to make a more direct connection. I wouldn't call it a perfect retelling but if someone wanted to get into Wing I'd happily recommend Glory of the Losers for them to have a look at!

    Hey Boo, I have an idea, at least if you're still interested in doing anything with the Earth in Star Wars Series.
    It's simple really, the idea is a collection of short stories set within the different chapters of the timeline usually focusing around a few individuals.
    For example, Earth in Star Wars 3: after the Battle of Earth the Terrans became an ally to the Republic and assist them in their operations. This means some of the Terrans soldiers will fight along side the Clone Troopers and possibly a Jedi(not under the command of mind you, but an allied force).
    I would love to see just how stark the difference is in how the Jedi wage war vs your average Terran soldier(Perhaps a UNSC General from America has a "difference of opinion" with a Jedi general on how a battle should be conducted?)
    Basically you're taking a microscope to a certain part of one of the chapters to help give a bit more context to that time period. And it doesn't have to be serious all the time, there can be plenty of silly moments.

    a justification for wing's lack of backstory for the pilots that i haven't seen mentioned is that there were plans to include these backstories in the original tv airing, but due to production scheduling sucking ass, it kept being pushed back until the point we got episode zero as a separate manga
    quote from the wiki when in the page for episode zero:
    "Episode Zero can technically be considered semi-official, since it was originally going to be included in the Gundam Wing television series. Director Masashi Ikeda specifically asked Sumizawa to pen the main characters' back-stories, and they were to be included in the series following episode 27 ("The Locus of Victory and Defeat"). However, due to production scheduling being the "worst ever" (in Sumizawa's own words) and his withdrawing as a scenarist, Episode Zero's tale kept being delayed and pushed back. Though it was later intended to play some role in episode 31 ("The Glass Kingdom"), the problems persisted, and the Episode Zero story ended up being left out of the anime series entirely."
    regarding 14:06 i have to make an objection since you clearly refer to when heero self detonated the wing while standing on it, the explosion looked imposing, but this was done purely for dramatic effect since it symbolizes the failure of the makeshift operation meteor and the gundam pilot's surrender, zechs eventually deduces that it was a controlled detonation, meant to destroy the core and the head, the most important parts since the rest of the suit by itself without its most important internal wiring is just a hunk of gundanium whose remains romefeller wants to just erradicate
    i am not defending heero surviving the explosion itself, what i am defending is the consequences of it being a controlled explosion, it makes sense in a non-contrived way for him to survive, the wing not being absolutely destroyed actually becomes the next plot point since zechs wants the wing rebuilt for his honor-driven rematch, while romefeller explicitly wants it destroyed, this leads to a dummy being blown, a search party sent to antarctica because romefeller doesn't trust zechs, and ultimately zechs' defection. Regarding heero's side of this, he immediately questions trowa for not letting him die there, and is the catalyst for trowa's decision to blow himself up along with the heavyarms, heero also goes right after noventa's granddaughter to ask her to kill him, to extract revenge now that heero knows he killed a good man and all the pacifists in that plane, and sylvia outright rejects his proposition, calling him a coward for "trying to take the easy way out" and make heero question himself and his way of handling things, so this helps develop both heero and trowa, and explore the consequences of their actions, then the plot in the form of noin catches up to heero to go have his rematch
