I used to be a very good surfer, but had knee surgery and gave up on trying to stick it. I watched your videos and went out for another shot. Finally! I can catch waves again. Thank you guys for refreshing the basics for me!
Similar story here, Chris. After 15y on the water, then 6y not (to busy paragliding) got back into it, but found paddle surf the best choice. More waves, better workout and it fixed my back- and knee troubles. Aloha, Robert!
I surfed all the time as a teenager but life and it's obligations take a lot of us away from our passions and getting back into it has been difficult. You showed me a couple of things I have been doing wrong like not lifting my chest up when taking off. Have been taking off push up style and that does not work at all!!!:))) Thanks.
Feet hanging off the board works well for shortboards but I could see where somebody new is hanging off the back off a 10'2 wondering why the waves keep passing.
Ruby Henaway it would depend on your height, legs have less mass than the upper body, so if your taller you should hang you feet of more. I've just started, I have a 8foot beginners board, I have my shins half way off the back of the board, if I don't the nose goes under every time.
The most important thing to me is the pop-up. A bad pop-up is a bad habit and really hard to break once you actually learn to surf. I drag my knee. I've learned how to adjust, but every second counts when dropping into a steep fast wave. One second extra with a pop-up.... you just missed the wave and in the white water. Master a quick pop-up and you will be golden. Bad habits will label you as a kook forever even if you learn to surf. It's ugly. It's really helpful to at least learn on a long board. Thanks for the video.
Kook is just a word and we all are at one time.. yes it’s all about fun. It’s just a word, but someday when a surfboard is headed right towards your head because of a unsafe careless act (most likely from pure fun ), kook might come out of your mouth. It’s just a word but part of surfing.
Very good video with nice clear instructions but there is one problem. A lot of beginner surfers are starting on longboards with soft tops. This makes the position you have to take a bit different and your stance a bit wider than on a shortboard. It is also way harder to catch a green wave if youre not forward enough on your longboard if you’re pretty lightweight like me. But other than that this video was perfect
This video is perfect for this beginner who only has access to a short board with a hard tip. There are hundreds of videos for beginner longboards, not so much for shorties.
THank you for this. As soon as you demonstrated raising your chest I puased the video and tried it on the floor. What a difference. I can't wait to try it on the water.
Just looking to transition from a mid length to a fish and found this short recap of key basics including pointing out that feet hangover really useful. Going to try them out this week and see how I get on! Agree with some of the comments on the length of swim strokes etc but I think there is room for personal preference here. Thanks for putting this together.
Lifting up the chest as far up as you can for a split second, before jumping on the board makes all the difference in the world of ‘pop up’😀🎸 Thanks Ryan🏄🏻♂️❤️
I make endless mistakes popping up, hands in the wrong position, getting on my knees. It’s not as easy as it looks to get it all right. Thanks for the video.
Currently taking surfing lessons in Venice, Ca. As far as standing up, I’m being taught to place my right knee on the board first, then bring my left knee into the center of my chest and board and then rotate into position while standing up. Im able to do that in one fluid motion but I feel like it slows me down a bit. Imma give your standup a shot. I know I’m in shape to do so and I’m sure I’ll eat sand a few times before I get the hang of it, but we’ve all been there I’m sure. Thanks for the great info my dude. Cheers from Los Angeles.
this is an instant pop up, ive been struggling to use this technique thought ive been surfing over a year. i dont think it is for an adult beginner surfer

Great video! I have to say that I see a lot of people missing the wave because they don’t take the extra two paddle strokes, that’s another important mistake to fix.
I had a habit of dragging my legs. I don’t know why but I remember a good surfer saying lift your legs up. Amazing how much easier it was to cut through the water.
Thank you thank you this video was helpful I think I was trying to take off from a prone position now I'll practice raising my chest who knows I might win the old time as longboard tournament this afternoon LOL
It’s been proven that holding your fingers slightly apart (not cupped) is more efficient and advising new surfers to paddle with long strokes is absolutely against what they should be doing. This causes them to reach and with that reach, they fail to arch their backs and use their lats - this burns out the shoulder muscles which are a lot smaller, weaker and are easily injured.
Perhaps we should have emphasise a long stroke without compromising posture but this also seems pretty logical. Will mention it next time as we agree with your point😊
The arch in your back is effected by the erector spinae lower back muscles The lat is activated from the hyper extension of the shoulder joint. However your point about shoulder fatigue may be true.

Great video for beginners, I know it's been two years already, but my 2 cents to improve here is to lower down a bit the music (especially at ~3:20), it makes difficult to hear you. Btw, great lesson, love your channel!
if your going to mention paddling i think a keynote is when to start.... i see so many people lay on board still then they stat paddle as the wave is picking them up then i wachem get 2 or 3 strokes before i see them go up and through the back wave missed and blame the wave has no power..... the ones that are receptive to advice i tell them if they haven't made at least 7 strokes they started to late.....
Thanks for advising me. I really would like to find out which camere you guys use for your filming and which model you guys use.? I look forward hearing from you.
Ruby, his rule of thumb about feet hanging off the end is kind of useless. Lay on your board in the water and adjust your forward/aft position so that the tip of your board is just an inch or two above the water surface. Very slight differences in position can really affect this. If you are too far forward, the nose will dive under as you paddle. If you are too far back, you'll be plowing through the water, and will never catch a wave. Most beginners lay too far back, so the tip is too high out of the water. Hope that helps.
My question is that in your opinion which is the best action camcorder for surfing. As there are lots of specially designed surfing cameras i would like to hear your opinion which one to pick and choose the best one out. There is this Sony AS200V Cam. GoPros off course, Sony RX0 II , Ricoh WG-50 . And SeaLife DC2000 . These are some really good models out there in the market. Please have a look at them abd advise me accordingly which one you think is the best. I understand that you may not have a fixed opinion on this matter but, whatever advise you give me i will pay heed to it.
Hey Carl, zoom is a key factor. Have a look at cameras which excel in this area, there are many detailed reviews which should help you make a decision.
Im actually a beginner too, I recently before this pandemic took a lesson. The instructor showed me how to popup. And so I did the same. He did it on an upsloap.i did it on a down slope, which was harder. But I did it twice. After an hour of water skills. We left each other. In his assessment, I was intermediate to advance. I could popup, but I had difficulty popping up during practice on the water. Paddling it was fine, givin the fact I watch surfing just about everyday. In your opinion was he wrong for taking me out to the back end/ bigger waves? After 30 minutes of killing myself I managed to popup 1 time. He said I was doing everything right, looking back at the wave before take off, everything. I just needed a coach. Someone to teach me. My worst fear before I made the opponentment was sharks. During the session I could only think of popping up. I am 6'8" tall. We went out to 6 foot deep
If you are still in the early learning stages of surfing, then I can't see why you would need to go out the back to the bigger waves. Lots of repetition popping up on smaller waves around waist deep is what I would suggest...Hard to say without actually seeing it!
Love your videos guys! Still don't understand, when wave pushes me, the nose of the board goes down. even tho im at the very edge. May be I should stand up earlier. thank you for videos!
If you're perfectly centered on your board and the wave isn't too steep for you, but you're still nosediving then try arching your back as much as you can. Same thing when the wave isn't pushing you, you lean forward and lower your head. If you try this, but still nosedive, maybe try standing up a little sooner.
It depends on the board. If you're on one of those super long, flat foam things you'll need to be WAY further back or done modern, hybrid fish are like that too. If you're catching white water you'll need to be at the back or a long way back no matter which board you use. You also need to paddle hard to equal the wave speed. This speed will reduce how far back you have to be if you're catching white water as the impact on you won't be as great.
Good pointers except the paddling. To get max speed you have to paddle with shorter stroke. The last 25% of the stroke has minimal power. There is a good video that analyzes why Kelly Slater swims faster than other surfers. Probably the most import topic is not discussed. Slipping off the board. The wax or pads are super important. If your feet slip off the board ask your local shop tips to make your feet stick better.
Interestingly any high level swimmer would disagree with this. Shorter strokes are inefficient. There are times during paddling when you may take shorter strokes for sure, but 90% of the time, longer is better. We can agree to disagree on this one
Jumping up is difficult and advanced. Id reccomend doing what he does first by pushing his chest up. Then moving your back foot up above your front knee (which should still be lying straigth) and then moving your front foot up, and standing up
What about the chicken wing pop up via the legs where one leg is in chicken wing position and the other is in the back. Is this not a good pop up option or would that impede future progress
Hi i have 7 ft 10 minmal and im 6 ft 2 tall if i centre my body on the board then my toes would stick off the end , should i put my body closer to the front of the board
It depends how your weight distribution is effecting what the nose of your board is doing. Watch my video "the complete beginners guide to surfing", I talk about it in more detail :)
I have been shortboarding for a few years...im 6'4 and when i popup my back foot,im natural, lands in front of the tailpad instead of on the pad...this makes turns difficult...i can move my foot back onto the pad after pop up but its difficult...would be nice to pupup with my foot on the tailpad...any ideas?
If you have been shortboarding for years i dont understand how you manage to surf with your back foot in front of your tailpad when you are taller than a lot of shortboards. You have surfed for so long that you just need to experiment if you have years if experience. Find out what works
I love surfing. I have been doing when I was 8 years old. And now I am 12 years old. I'm sorry that is not so good surfing place in Sweden. But I'm trying to find a place in Sweden. 😧😦😥
For people learning on longer boards it can help if they stand slightly further up on the board. This will help maintain forward momentum, too far forward though and you will nose dive...On shorter boards most surfers have their back foot on the pad.
Right here on the surfboard is just right. In front of the kick pad I put on the board specifically for my back foot. Proper stance, my back foot should be in front of the thing meant for my back foot. Not on it.
Golden rule: always make sure the board has enough VOLUME and can hold your weight. Riding a suitable board for your weight/height is CRITICAL for enjoyment and learning

Jumping up is difficult and advanced. Id reccomend doing what he does first by pushing his chest up. Then moving your back foot up above your front knee (which should still be lying straigth) and then moving your front foot up, and standing up
Is the raising the chest bit also to prevent nosediving?
Partly, but more so to create room for your front leg to come through. No chest lift makes it much harder!
What about the chicken wing pop up via the legs where one leg is in chicken wing position and the other is in the back.
Is this not a good pop up option or would that impede future progress
Duo M on steeper waves you won’t get up in time and that can get pretty spooky if you don’t turn in time
really a great video. hope the microphone is better.
Can you do the same 4 a short board ? Please
Can do!
Why is the tail pad so far up off the tail?
Because its not a shortboard. According to my unproffesional estimate its something between 6'8-7'4
Hi i have 7 ft 10 minmal and im 6 ft 2 tall if i centre my body on the board then my toes would stick off the end , should i put my body closer to the front of the board
Nice work Sadeen! Good luck finding some surfing spots in Sweden!
Why is the grip pad so far back if you dont stand on it?
For people learning on longer boards it can help if they stand slightly further up on the board. This will help maintain forward momentum, too far forward though and you will nose dive...On shorter boards most surfers have their back foot on the pad.
I really appreciate you guys thank u!!
We appreciate you!
Hey! what kind of board is that?
A waterman, I don't think they shape boards anymore
What type of board is used in this video?
surf*board
A gun surfboard
That’s not a gun gun boards are for Mavericks wave 🌊 thAts a long board se mi
Don't listen to them it's a shortboard probably 5'11-6'4
Look at Jerry Lopez. He stands up straight at times and just rides.
I noticed he doesn't pop up with his back foot on the pad. Is that normal with most surfers?
Check out how to pop up in 2 minutes!
what board is this in the video?
It's a custom shaper m8 everyone has one here on the coast
What beach r u at
Right here on the surfboard is just right.
Does anyone know some good beaches in or around Perth WA for beginners to start surfing
Try the metro beaches like Trigg, etc...
How to Rip ok will do, thanks. I’m 164cm and 60kg’s what size/type of board should I get? I went to a surf shop and asked but they had no idea..
that was awesome - sometimes I see guys pop up and the back foot is right on the back pad ?? why is this.. ? bit confusing
If ur still wondering then I think it’s for turning but don’t quote me
