Out of all the Jewish people in history..The Rambam is my favorite... love searching and hearing anything involving him. AND this is the first I've heard anything about his son.. Thank You Mr. Abramson!!!
Thank you Dr. Abramson for this lecture. Many great HaKhamim of lesser known mesorath to often get overlooked by the wider Jewish world. Very much appreciate giving the spot like to one of our greatest teachers. 7azaq wuBarukh.
+Henry Abramson Thank you ! Regarding things like washing before prayer, the Rambam brings this down in the M"T H. Tephila 4:3 and likewise got it from the talmud. Though Avraham did believe that many sufi practices are preserved practices of the pious and even the prophets of israel. I believe he would not have argued that this matter of halakha would be one of them, since he learned it from his father and like wise Rambam learned it from his. if anything he would have pointed to Shabboth 50b or something as a reasoning and not the sufis.
Very interesting! Thank you Dr. Abramson. I just discovered your channel and look fwd to learning much from your many presentations. Born Coptic, I find your lectures fascinating. I have enjoyed many of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks lectures at BYU and count you of equal brilliance.
The description of sufism is very condescending and doesn't do justice to the depth of devotion and philosophy of this influential movement in islam. It would be the same as saying that hasidism is all about dancing, weddings, and drinking vodka.
Abraham Maimuni seeing no conflict between being Judaist and being at least quasi Sufi reminds me of the Jews who converted to Baha'i, some of which I'm sure stayed observant and still identified as Judaists. And Rumi! Rumi! How I will ever love Rumi! I also think that as far early Buddhism goes before written texts and mythological evolution; it is more of a spiritual philosophy which can potentially overlay other spiritual systems in harmony and synergistic enrichment.
Your lecture on the Baal shem tov was very informative--aside from the absurd speculation you made about him being not so learned in nigla. Unless you dispute the axiom "If a is greater than b and b is greater than c", then a is \greater than c, how could the Mezritcher magid, and in turn the Alter Rebbe, both of them geonim, follow such an intellectually impoverished melamed of children? The answer is that he like the Rebbe MH"M who came later were both Tzadikim! will you please retract and recant Your claim?
I know a direct male descendant of Maimonides (Avi Mimon) who looks exactly like the picture. I know the picture is not how he looked but it definitely looks like his great great.....grandson.
Today I would say someone like Rabbi Jonathan sacks zt'l was more of a 'chacham' as opposed to many great leaders (gedolim) who could be know as Chassidim. I think both are very important.
Another great video Dr.Abramson
Thank you, Dr. I always enjoy learning from you.

Fascinating topic! Thank you so much.
Very interesting lecture.
great lecture; good catch on 'Seventh Rebbe.' Of course, the 'previous Rebbe' was R' Yosaif Yitzchok. Thanks :)

The other Milchamos Hashem was written by Nachmanides, not Gersonides. Otherwise great lecture!
