For that magnet, try using an old Jeweller's trick by putting the magnet inside of a small plastic zip-lock bag.
That way you keep the actual magnet clean of the attracted filings & makes removing them that much easier.

Thank you for that tip. It's few and far between I get one that it's so simple and common sense I wonder why I didn't think of it. I'll just have to make sure the plastic bag doesn't hit the abrasive

I like that tip about putting the magnets inside zip locs. Neo magnets can be purchased at Northern Tools among other places, about 7/8 diameter x .125 thick and plenty strong. I stick a couple on my vehicle oil pan to attract metal particles.

I used saran wrap and tape it together, super quick and catches anything metal. Thanks for the thoughts.

2 days later and the "mouse" is back! Almost repositioned camera to show the filing forming as I was grinding. Looks pretty cool, will have to do that at some point.

Found that angle guide on Klingspor's Woodworking Shop for 24.95 plus 7.99 shipping. Just ordered it for my HF 1 x 30 belt sander. Making my very first knives for me and my son, of course I have already started the process and made myself a jig to put the bevel on the 1095 steel. But I would of loved to had this when I was doing this. Great video thanks for sharing!!

Great idea putting the magnet 🧲 at the bottom on the belt.

Yes sir, I’ve learned a lot as well. Never thought you could take something like this and turn it into something great and better than most out there. Thank you Mr. Cliff!

To add to the mods, if you take a 5/16 coarse threaded bolt (or allthread) and cut about a half inch off and thread that half inch into the spring in the tensioning arm you can use it to add tension without trying to hunt a new spring or try to modify existing spring. It's adjustable too by threading it in and out of the spring to desired tension. I find sometimes I need to change this a half a turn depending on belt.

How about that Kalamazoo machine? I saw it’s pricey but I wonder if it’s variable speed?

Nice job and a great opportunity for you to learn new things about building and modifying a belt sander. Forget about the guy who was talking smack, you can't buy experience, it's more valuable then money. The motor that comes with the HF Belt sander, there's no way to use a variable controller with it? It's an AC motor, and I guess it's a brushless motor? I have one of these little belt sanders and a variable speed controller box with a bench-top dial would be awesome.

That’s great Cliff! I have one also and I’m learning to use the stock motor on it and it’s not too bad. This variable speed motor is hard to come by now. One website has it but they’ve doubled the price. Wow. I’ve invested a lot on the 1 by 30 belts and I have to use em.

People can say anything they want, but I'm with you. I learned an awful lot on my HF 1 x 30. Things that helped when I went to a JET 1 x 42 and now with my Esteem 2 x 72. Those lessons would have been much more expensive on the later machines. Keep it up.

  • @robertmunguia250

Hey Cliff, how do you protect the speed controller? Metal shavings can get in that control board.

My HF 1x30 is basically brand-new (probably has about 5 mins on it) and it completely sucks. My adjustment wheel is just like the one you mentioned that has about 1/8 inch of adjustment. I spent $50 on belts and thought I was all set and I can't even get a belt on the damn thing lol. I'm going to take it apart next weekend and see if I can get it working like yours. Seeing yours work so good makes me feel like I got a lemon. Mine literally sucks. Everything is too tight, it's loud as hell, it's super fast with zero torque. I could literally stall the belt with my pointer finger.

    • @CurryCustomCutlery
      @CurryCustomCutlery  6 років тому +1

15 minute job with a dremel grinder once you get the roller and swing arm out of the way. You should get your torque back once the belt is properly tensioned....LOUD is unfortunately the default for there guys tho.

As has been shown here (earlier videos) - true the wheels, take it apart and make sure it all works the way you think it should. Just went through this a few weeks ago - Thanks CCC for the heads up on things to do!

Thanks for the reminder to go back and find the comment. The machine mentioned is the Rikon 50-151, or 50-161vs(variable speed). They list for about $90/$160 respectively. However, I cant seem to find any decent reviews or youtube videos showing it in use? I would appreciate any info you find as well...

@@CurryCustomCutlery I just ordered the variable speed Rikon at the end of summer. Delivery date has been extended 3 times since then so I’m still waiting. Also the price has increased considerably in the last 3 years! By the way, do you know if the jig fits the Rikon 50-161?
I just left a message that the link on this video said the page is no longer valid. Do you have a current web address?
Great videos, very helpful and I just subscribed.
