Saw this advertised on TV and was intrigued. No longer the case after watching this. Thanks! Sticking pins is the most troubling. Possibly good for those with minimal tools, but for us tool enthusiasts, searching for the right socket enables inventorying.
Hehe just watched an ad for one of these on youtube. Despite my assertion that anything that appears in an online ad and is made is China to be junk, curiosity got the best of me. Your video proves my assertion.
¹Okay, I’m starting off by saying this: concept & idea of this “universal” socket....awesome! In practicality the socket doesn’t really hold up to my “expectations” on the jobsite; and here’s why. I bought one after seeing a late night tv commercial, & then found one walking through a store long ago. Was excited to get home & “find” a use for my new accessory (you know what I’m talkin about, get new tool, AND, BOOM....you suddenly find all sorts of projects that need doing & magically with the new “tool” you just bought. WOW, it’s like magic😂). I started with installing hooks & eye-bolts for my moms laundry room. Worked out okay. Then went to my workshop & started testing on some lags, bigger fasteners, etc....to see just what this new socket could do. Wasn’t “pushing” the limits w/ this at all, was just using it & seeing how well it worked. After 25-35 mins of use, I found the pins sticking, the socket wobble wasn’t the greatest either, & then finally I had those darn pins flying out of the socket & across my work table. Sure, I might have lightly tapped the socket on the table to get the pins to “reset” & allow me to keep using it, but I never thought I’d have small “needle” like flying projectiles flying across my workshop after gently tapping the socket & than trying to drive a 2 1/2” lag into some wood.....Oops😆 Well, I thought my gentle tapping might have “broke” it & so I exchanged it for another one....as the first was definitely defective, somehow 😉 Week later, was back at it, needing to install some more hooks. This time though, was for a customer. I grabbed the universal socket, to give another chance; & this was brand spanking shiny new....ALRIGHT!👍🏻 Epic fail. 😨 Not only did the same things eventually happen, but had the pins fly out again, dang it. Not very fun trying to find ‘bout 25 pins at someone’s house when you’re on the ground searching for & picking up these tiny things when client watching you & laughing (was installing a pot/pan rack in kitchen for client, along w/ other kitchen jobs), yippee me 🥳. Some of the pins really did “launch” themselves through the air & landed 3-5 ft away. Well, do like making the customer experience memorable so they won’t forget me🤣. Not sure on the brand, or if that makes a difference at all, but haven’t used a “universal” socket like this again & didn’t bother returning it, again, I just ended up throwing it in the bin. Who knows, might try again w/ [these] sockets someday, will have to see, but more than likely....probably won’t 😉. Until than, still searching for the best of the best accessories that are out there, & having fun as well👍🏻 Cheers✌🏼 ¹ sorry for extremely long comment
Larkhon Nohkral was awhile ago, but know the one bought of TV informer Ian was the Gator Grip Brand. The other ones I’ve tried got from Depot, Amazon & think Lowe’s over the years. In the end, they all have broken, the pins end up bending, falling out, or get stuck & dint “grab/adjust’ to object anymore. So, it’s a great idea, just wish socket lasted longer from use, but, they aren’t that expensive; so, guess depends on price & hoe many uses can get before stops working. Have a good one✌🏼
Was thinking about getting one of these kind of things for my dad, my brother told me not to get one, and after watching this video, I'm glad I listened to him
I am so glad I found you. Thank you for saving me my money and disappointing my husband with this. I thought, what a wonderful tool. The one I looked at was about ten dollars more than what you paid. And that was on sale, so they claimed. You got a thumbs up and a new subscriber.
The red sleeve is there so you can hold it and stabilize it when you're trying to drive a bolt in so it doesn't whip and fly everywhere. Similar to a magnetic drive guide, I just don't think it extends. Some people call it a chaser.
I can’t imagine the pins withstanding that kind of force. There’s so many pins shifting and grinding against each other in different ways. Also very easy to insert the bolt or whatever you’re screwing, off center. If you want it to last you’d better use it on much larger bolts and take care to properly insert them and slowly screw them in, but at that point you’re probably saving a small amount of time of not looking for the socket you need and losing a lot of time on actually driving your screws.
Cool. I have a different one somewhere and I just need it for a hook, so need to look for it since that's the best thing for that. LOL. I still haven't used mine either.
I've actually owned a few in the past. They have saved my ass more than once. Keeping in a bike with a cheapo ratchet. I dont recommend actually intentionally. It's a one and done tool in my mind
I really enjoyed watching the metal bits fly. I knew those were junk when I started seeing them at resale shops in their junk tool bin as well as yard sales. You could see how badly smashed up the ends of those points were. Mabe if they used a hardened metal instead of relying on the chrome plating to make them strong. What a fail. Glad you saved me the expense of wasting money on one of those.
Have seen these for years. As soon as you put any torque on it the little fingers in it they bend and stay stuck up in itself. Buy a cheap socket set from Harbor freight and you'll get more done.
The round, flared base on the head of the black lag was pushing away the pins from the hex head. No surprise it didn't work. Placing it centered in the head of the thing you are driving and wiggling it a bit to get the marginal recesed pins to drop down before you turn on the tool helps, too. And yeah, slow pull on the trigger to start with.
The Gator Grip (which I think is the original) is ok for LIGHT duty when you can't carry a bunch of sockets or just don't want to. So I would not recommend driving without a pilot and impacts....drill/drivers only. Not really for construction but ok for maintenance of like a bike or disassembly/reassembly of stuff. Not sure about the one in this video but it appears to have the same limitations....it might also be a little lesser quality but hard to tell.
The ones I have have the hexagonal thing in the middle it helps stabilize the pins somewhat. but you definitely dont want to use this thing with an impact. use it by hand only. no breaker bars. and a short or stubby ratchet if you dont want to break them instantly.
Got one for Christmas. This in my tool kit strictly for inside the house use. Light duty emergency use only. My shop has the "proper tools". This design should get perfected because the concept is good.
The problem on the last 2 screws is that the circular edge at the bottom of the nut is wider then the nut section, and when you push down it matches that wider edge instead of the shape of the nut.
It still shouldn't do that. I think you are totally right after watching again. These sockets are a great concept and are supposed to basically "hug" the entire top part of the
That’s not what happens, the thing just breaks. The pins would only go down as far a they need, so the ones more towards the center would try to grip the bolt and there would be some that go to that outer circle too, but that’s not the problem. Basically, I see what you’re saying, but it’s only not working just because it broke.
I agree. The circular edge would absolutely cause the tool to widen and jam the pins. I think you are right and the nay sayers don't know what they are doing.
I have something like this from at least a decade ago. Mine also has pins, but they don't get stuck like yours. But even so, I certainly wouldn't have this as your only socket--they're very annoying because the wobble happens unless you get them perfectly lined up with the center.
You gotta get the one with the hex shaped hole in the middle and hex shaped pins. I've used one of these in a pinch to get rusty lugs off the car on the side of the road last time we had a flat.
wow, was just about to order one for my husband! thanks for this straight forward video, i'll pass! the one advertised is apparently 99$ on sale for 50! i would of been so...peeved!!! thank you, subscribed!!! 😊

It may have worked better on lag screws without the washer head. If you think about it, the washer is pushing the pins away from the hex head and letting it spin.

Mine worked on lag screws.....for a while, I oiled it up before using and it it work well, but then it like exploded and the pins went everywhere lol and that because I tried driving in a lag screw without a pilot hole.
Thanks for reviewing this. I just saw an ad for the Super Socket and I was skeptical. And although this is a different brand, I've seen enough lol.
Same just saw that ad too lmao
Same here. Kinda was hoping it worked
Same... almost bought it. But I know to check when it’s too good to be true

The supersocket one is actually good. This one he shows in the video is cheap trash
This is why I love the internet lol I saw the ad hyping it up and instantly came to see how shitty it is

I was gonna but one for my dad for his birthday but I’m glad I found this lol

I don't know how much it affects performance, but the SuperSocket has about a dozen more pins, and none of the gaps like this one.

So this one is 9-21mm do they make one in SAE?
The red thing spins so you can hold it steady another good feature
Mine worked on lag screws.....for a while, I oiled it up before using and it it work well, but then it like exploded and the pins went everywhere lol and that because I tried driving in a lag screw without a pilot hole.
UA-cam made me watch an ad for 'The SuperSocket'... so here I am now.
Well....now I'd like to see Dr. Magic vs Gator grip and SuperSocket.....all same concept...but is there a difference 🤔
