This series made me buy the entire Total War saga. I can now say that if you think the Scipii have an unfair starting mission, consider Spain in medieval 2, who are literally told to kill a guy who is to this day a legend in Spanish culture due to his military achievments.
in case anyone out there is wondering what the 7 wonders of the ancient world do here is a list for you. 1) Statue of Zeus: provides +4 loyalty (public order basically) in all settlements 2) Colossus of Rhodes: all income from naval trade is increased by 40% 3) mausoleum of Halicarnassus: reduces construction times by 20% for all buildings that require 5 or more turns to complete 4) Temple of Artemis: construction costs on all religious buildings is decreased by 30% 5)Hanging Gardens of Babylon: increases income from agriculture by 20% 6) Great Lighthouse of Alexandria: decreases likelyhood of all nearby ships sinking and increases movement range of all naval units 7) Great Pyramids at Giza: +4 Loyalty of all Egyptian peoples to the owning faction.
You'reThatMantis Rhodes alone is maddeningly good, ALL naval trade +40%?! Even if it was that one province that would be worth going to war for. I wonder why Jon hasn't nabbed it yet.
@Tuure Keränen Probably because you want to avoid isolated settlements. Or, at least, I do. I'd hate to have to face a faction sending all its might at my one army holing up in a town or city.
Jon, the Anger trait is generated by the Temple of Mars building line. Any family member in a city with a temple to a violent god (including Mars) has a 10% chance to pick up Anger. They may also pick up Bloody or Lively. Lively is supposed to have the highest chance to pop (15%) but I always seem to get Anger on everyone.
I have a quick tip about wardogs, because a couple of episodes ago you used them against cavalry and I died a little. Here are the best times to deploy wardogs: - Once the enemy has broken, as the hounds will chase down the routing force. - From behind enemy lines as the enemy is marching toward you (provided you can sneak them around somehow), this will force the AI into either breaking their battle line to deal with the hounds, or let them nibble away at ranged infantry like Cretan Archers. The AI will usually choose the latter. You can, of course, deploy them to charge into the melee but they will die quick in that situation.
Definitely good ideas - especially archers, though I prefer to use them more simply; purely as pressure to apply to one point where I want to start a break, throwing infantry, cavalry and dogs simultaneously at the weakest flank...
Or, as 11 year old me used to love doing. Just have a 20 stack army of dogs follow your main force around and set them loose as soon as the fight starts because its hilarious.
Oh shit that's a great idea. I usually have two armies following each other round, mainly to replenish troops if needed, but avoid fighting with both because the AI just charges in and doesn't really work with you - two thousand wardogs charging into the enemy at the start of a battle though...
jon the reinforcements were AI controlled even though you turned it off because when you look at the enemies units on the pre battle screen it turns on the AI even though it says it's turned off its just a wee glitch so instead just look at the units before you attack and then turn off the AI without looking at their units
I just came home from working a 10 hour day, no dinner, to see an eviction notice. Rome total war playthrough is the main thing i'm looking forward to each week, so i'm really glad to see it's going to go to 3 days a week.
I remember first time I heard that this series is going to be 3 times a week. I was giggling like a child hearing that. Back then I thought, "Now I don't have to worry about not having things to watch.", and it made me pick up this game more frequently. Life has been different since that day for me. Becaming an adult, physically and age-wise at least, I can't just sit down and watch a full long video in UA-cam anymore. But, returning to watch this series once again at least ease the stress that was brought by adult life and giving me the same feeling I had like my first time watching. Thank you very much, Jon. Thank you for starting this series.
Jon Eggbox has been identified and arrested by SCP agents. Special Containment Procedures: SCP-2621 is to be confined to a 20x20 room with living spaces and a computer with Rome Total War installed. Depending on where you aim to take the Brutii, it may be worth getting catapult ranges, and having two to three units of Onagers in siege armies. Yes they move slower, but you can sit at a safe distance and take down a good couple of wall sections, plus accompanying towers with them. Also, it is fun to watch garrison units standing on walls fall to their deaths when the walls give way! Of course, Onagers aren't good against barbarian cities as I don't think they ever get stone walls. But you can do a similar tactic with standard Ballistas.
Siege equipment definitely slow you down a little but they are nice to have, its funny to see an onager send a shot into a line of infantry and see them get blast arounded.
If I can, I have two armies moving around the map together - one for dealing with armies, and the other for besieging cities. It s a strain on cash and, with large armies on, really sucks down that population
Wy Vern Indeed, but Gorbz mentioned how Siege weapons are less useful against barbarians because they don't build Stone walls, and I pointed out that they can't if I'm not mistaken. Obviously there is still the Greeks, Egyptians and all of that.
Indirect fire is aiming and firing a projectile without relying on a direct line of sight between the gun and its target, as in the case of direct fire. Aiming is performed by calculating azimuth and elevation angles, and may include correcting aim by observing the fall of shot and calculating new angles.
To be fair, this is before the Marium Reforms that brought in the Roman Legionaries. They just don't have the same standards and discipline. Incompetence like that actually works really well from a role-playing point of view, because that's exactly why you'd want to introduce military reforms.
Jon this series has created a large number of new fans of the total war games. So on behalf of myself and many others, thank you for introducing us to this great game.
You may want to pay more attention to the over all battle. That little scare with the general in the first battle could have gone horribly if you didn't catch it in time
It's one of the most common mistakes people make in an RTS: Become too focused on the details and lose sight of the overall picture. "Well jeez, my banshee killed every one of his SCVs. How'd I lose?" "Because while that was taking your entire focus, he murdered your army and set up camp on top of your production"
Run the army leader out the back gate, keep all other units at town centre. Once you run your general out the back gate the entire enemy army will run after you, wait a bit before you go back into city. Along the way the wall arrow boxes take out enemy. Just keep them chasing you around the city and you'll wipe them out. You can do this with forts too, ive destroyed thousands of enemies with one unit many times. :) you can sally forth 3 times per turn too
Jon, I think I know why the reinforcing units were AI controlled. Its because you clicked on the mark for them being player controlled and after that you looked at the greeks army roster which makes the reinforcements AI controlled again, after you look at the enemys army roster you have to recheck the marker again for your reinforcements to be controlled by you.
I still hope you'll continue this sort of across history, like the Manyatruenerd family (or a slightly less atrocious family name) sort of claws their way into power to lead the Eastern Roman Empire conveniently during the time periods covered by Barbarian Invasion DLC and Medieval 2.
21:30 here we see the hastati displaying their new fighting technique - queuing up and taking turns trying to fight an entire unit of spearmen one man at a time
This is, I think, my favourite series you've ever done. I hope you continue it, and consider following it up with another historical grand strategy game afterwards with more historical anecdotes alongside. Thanks for all the entertainment!
If you have AI control checked off in the battle balance screen and then look at the enemy forces, it may be switched on again, so it's always handy to check it on and off again before starting battle. also, the trick for going head-to-head with roman infantry vs. hoplites is Guard Mode. This means they keep their shields up against the spears and tire the hoplites and don't get skewered too much. you can then flank them with cav. alternatively, if you keep your infantry units 3-4 ranks deep, they may have a broader frontage than the phalanx and wrap round, once that happens, switch of guard mode and see the greeks die.
thank you Jon for adding an extra episode a week!! I absolutely bloody love this series and its got me playing loads of Rome Total War again, but the wait between Thur and Tues was killing me these last few weeks!
Double clicking unit cards will select all the units of that type, so you don't have to click all your Hastati one by one. You can also use ctrl + i for infantry, ctrl + m for missile units, ctrl + c for cavalry and ctrl + a for all. Clicking a unit card and clicking another unit card while holding shift will also select all the units in between the two cards. Cheers.
Jon, I really like your Rome Total War serie, made me want to start over again. Your comments and knowledge of the game is great. So far it's hilarious how you've been oblitarating everybody
The game is slightly bugged so that if you look at the enemy army (2:20) when you have reinforcements for your army it will sometimes flip the AI reinforcement switch back to on without showing it. I manually flip the switch on-off after looking at the enemy to avoid the problem.
see how Larissa was unhappy once the garrison was gone, you can simply queue up 10 units of peasants to train which will temporarily take 2400 men out of the population which will result in greater public happiness, and once your force is done killin those bastards you can just move your garrison back into the city and then un-queue the remaining 9 units of peasants so your settlements population only decreases by 240
Just so you know. If you want to check the positions that your soliders are moving to. You can press Space bar and it will show where they are moving to.
once you charge with your general you can press alt and attack the unit they charged, the general unit will switch their weapon sword and will be incredibly effective without keep charging over and over check it by the way, because not every unit can, but if they do, they kick ass
Jon! Last episode you made a big point about using the Rally Troops ability of generals to keep the general in the middle or rear of a charge formation, but this episode I don't think I saw you do it even once! Your generals were at risk far too often during that sally.
Here's a tip for anyone stuck with a broken retail edition of Rome or Medieval 2. You can input the CD Key on steam to receive the steam edition for free. You're welcome.
Nice use of Cretans there, really makes me rethink my own tactics with them. :'D Thank you for making this a 3x series, this is excellent entertainment.
I do miss Steve Jon, from when you had the flu. He seemed a bright lad, bristling with fresh ideas. I hope you lay your scene on Capua soon for he was last seen discussing comunist politics there on the forum.
if you you want to kill the gliched men that are still on the battlefield, you should use "guard" mode on the chasing unit. this makes sure they kill any enemy within the formation. hopes it save you some time! keep up the good work !
Your reinforcements were being commanded by Narces, it would seem lol. And tbf during that sally, you literally told the Hastati to stand at the gate and said if anyone wanted to fight them it was fine. Brave guys were just following orders lol
To be honest this may be my favorite non fallout series you've ever done. I hope you follow this up with a medieval 2 campaign or maybe a modded version of Rome. Europa Barbarorum for Rome is great and Stainless Steel is amazing for medieval 2.
20:58 Steveus Confusios Romanicus is still unsure of which way he should be facing, despite the yells he can hear from the angry Macedonians behind him.
I still remember when you played this when you had the flu loved those two episodes but so glad you're doing a full series I love this game and your content is just great always learning new ways to play.
I just wanted to say that at least in part, your playthrough of Rome here has gotten me to go back to a couple of my old favorites. I've already re-installed Age of Mythology, and when I finish the campaign, I'm probably going to reinstall Medieval 2: Total War. So thanks :)
Loving the series.. Made me start RTW again after many years... I fefeated the greeks, the macedonians and am now fighting a full scale war against my former allies, the Egyptians, who now own most of the East. So, be careful ;) Looking forward to the full series
The reason your reinforcements were AI controlled in the first battle was because you looked at the enemy army page (where you can see all their units) after you unticked the AI control box. It doesn't actually show it, but that apparently resets your reinforcements back to AI controlled. It makes no sense why that happens, but it does. if you just tick and untick the box again it should be fine.
OMFG YES ROME TOTAL WAR 3 TIMES!!! this is one of my favorite series. its about 1. Fallout NV You only live once 2. Rome Total war 3. Deadly Premonition 4. Fallout 3&NV kill everything
Want to know where those Greek armies came from? My guess is it has to do with the fleet you scared off from Sicily. When I play, my goal is take and dominate the Black Sea by having fleets covering it, further from the straits, the safer and more profitable, and expand. Will try to find cheats to reset the game clock so it won't expire.
when a general attacks you and you have 2 units of cavalry, you should split the cavalry and surround the pursuer which will almost instantly break them, also, after you have the choice to end the battle, anytime you quit is a win
The glitch where the guy runs in place can have a real fatal result if it happens to Wardogs, imagine the dogs still attacking but the handlers ran all off, no matter what you do your units will never directly attack the dogs, even if you sit them idle around said wardogs. Meanwhile the dogs chew through your troops, defenseless.
Those hoplites are shaken, but not stirred.
PsychicRadroach I honestly can't stop thinking this "shaken not stirred' in a sean conarey accent
peaking at an enemy army resets the ai control box but it doesnt show the tick, always tick and untick after viewing armies to avoid ai control
Thanks for explaining this terrible bug -_-
MrNicoJac How dare you speak I'll of this game.

Looking forward to looking forward to seeing this series on Sundays as well!
I was playing this game when I was 8...10 yeasr later i still play it.
One of the best game ever made
that moment when he keeps dragging the cretan archers into the melee line disrupting their fire and then decides to charge them in lmfao
Bring on Sunday! Id love to see you play Total War: Warhammer again but this time as the vampire counts like you first stated.
Following flaming catapults at night is even better
Seeing that horde at 25 minutes was spooky
I learn something about the game every time I watch one of your videos
What an amazing series.
I look forward to these videos and honestly all of your videos every day :D Thank you so much for doing what you do jon.
OMFG YES ROME TOTAL WAR 3 TIMES!!! this is one of my favorite series. its about
1. Fallout NV You only live once
2. Rome Total war
3. Deadly Premonition
Hat off to those battles.
Loving this series Jon, love the channel, please keep it up
when a general attacks you and you have 2 units of cavalry, you should split the cavalry and surround the pursuer which will almost instantly break them, also, after you have the choice to end the battle, anytime you quit is a win
At 30:30 those 4 peasants each took out a charging equite. A pretty good way to go out I think
Really good series, got me playing RTWII more than I ever had previously, but it has me wishing for some of the simplicity of the original.
The bloody trait is from running down routing enemies, which is why every general ends up bloody
