That segue in the end was SMOOOOTH. Appreciate the advice. I like how you're realistic about the profitability of card counting and how it's not easy and not for everyone
Thanks to this channel leaned basic strategy, keeping the count, and strategic bet spread. Spent 3 days at Vegas last month. Had a great time. Met cool people. Had great conversations. Had my fill in drinks. Up about $500. Maybe luck. Maybe what this channel taught me. Thanks either way!
Hello Colin! Great video and commentary as always! You're the only source of this type of information, that explains everything step by step! Thank you again Colin! Robert /:-)
great video!
One tip that I’ve used is having my wife at the table playing alongside me. She will stop and ask me about her hand on occasion (she knows about 90% of BasicSt). I also nudge her lightly (inconspicuously cause we sit close together) to raise her bet and she’ll raise before I do.
Great video Colin. You took the last 2 months of my podcast absorption and made it 8 minutes long :D Very concise and digestible.
Sweet sound effects too. Definitely need more of that. @Nickname
I just went to Shreveport to try counting for the first time at a casino. Plus my first time ever sitting down at a blackjack table. Not too many 3/2 tables, but the ones I found were face down cards, so I wasn't able to keep count. Just played basic strategy having fun with my brother. Towards the end of the night my brother had too much to drink and he was delt an 8 and a 2 and didn't hit...He thought he already had 20. Plus he was sitting last seat and everyone had decent money out and the dealer hit a 20 and beat everyone. Dealer would have busted if he hit. One of the two ladies at our table was giving him some words. We left that table and two hours later people were going up to my brother like "you're the guy that didn't hit on 10!!" I was dying laughing. Fun night and thank you for your videos they help a lot!!!
but did you win or lose?
Hi guys! Been watching. Starting to learn.
The where to play part is probably one of the most important sections in the video. I was lucky and played at tolerant places in my early career, but I've definitely overstayed some places.
I loved the Richard Munchkin quote. Great video.
Might be your best video yet, I think one thing a lot of people need to realize you can make great money card counting on the side. I mean the casino isn't paying your health insurance 😂
For basic strategy this is how I look at it: Most people learn how to play each hand but I actually think it's easier to learn each upcard. You're rarely splitting or doubling 7s+ since you're less likely to win. You're rarely hitting on 4-6 since it's typically a double, split or stand. Rarely double on 2-3 but split most hands if DAS is allowed. Those 3 things let you look more at the patterns instead of brute force memorizing.
Golden rules: Always split A & 8, never split 5s & 10s
7+: Rarely split or double, hit under 17
10/A: Hit all soft up to 18, hard to 16
7-8: Double 10 under 10, split 9s under 9 except 7s where 2s & 3s split. Hit under S19.
4-6: Get more money on the table, never risk busting
6: Double up to S18, split everything. Stand over H11
4-5: Split everything except 4s on 4 if no DAS, double S15-18 on 4, S14-18 on 5 (Easy to remember: A4 on 4)
2-3: Play cautiously - Rarely need to risk busting but also rarely doubling or hitting hard hands. Always split the high pairs but only the low pairs if DAS
Hit 12, stay 13+.
Double 9+ & S17
Split everything except 4 (2s, 3s DAS, 6s on 2 DAS)
Masterpiece of a video!
Colin, I would love a video on how you worked your way up in the early days. EXACTLY what you did, exactly what mistakes you were making and how corrected them, exactly what stakes you were playing and what you moved up to. It would be very inspiring for those of us starting out and struggling at low stakes.
He has a whole book he wrote that details much of that, it's called the 21st century card counter, it's on Kindle, definitely a good read!
It's almost irrelevant. It's a lot different now. He started small and built up over time, and those small-stakes tables just aren't out there. Any more, decent games start out at $25. Now to play right, and have the spread these guys have, you need a PERFECT game, 25k and casinos that you can get the hours in at.
@@kenbagwell8551 Actually there's many small stakes tables available around here. That's why I'm so curious about Colin's early days.
@@RightURKen7 make sure the tables you speak of are dealing real 3/2 BJ and with decent pen. Many $5 and $10 games are not real BJ, but really just carnival games.
@@kenbagwell8551 I have decent conditions around here. 3 and 5 dollar minimums, 4 and 6 deck shoes, 3-2, split up to 4 times, double down on any two cards(except split aces) only thing is pentration which varies a bit from dealer to dealer.
Interesting video. No personal interest in becoming a counter, but I always found it fascinating. Tips make a looooot of sense to me
Yeah, I might play once a year (for very low stakes and I'll invariably walk away if I'm up a small amount) and barely know basic strategy, but I understand the concept and enjoy watching these videos.
I respect you man, I admire everything you do and I bought and like your book very much as well as the documentary you guys made on your team before but 5k or 10k to get started as a bankroll as a card counter in blackjack is basically nothing sadly and not even remotely close to being enough just being brutally honest!
One Strategy I've done as a card counter at my local casino, is "act" as a newbie and pretend to be taking advice from other players. Pretend you're playing with them and this strategy has worked for me for a awhile. :)
I don't go to the casino a lot, so people usually forget about it, I usually go once a month to card count so people do forget about me
A funny thing about playing by the book is, that you can get all your Roulette losses back at the Black Jack table. Worked for me at least.
Nothing in a casino is easy money unless you find full screen of bubbles left behind by a gambler on ocean magic slot machine 🤓
Haha
@@Blackjackapprenticeshipwill you be having a boot camp in Vegas anytime ?
If my casino gave me a choice between being allowed to play Blackjack or finding a full screen of bubbles on Ocean Magic, I would choose Blackjack.
Hey Colin thank you for oye knowledge, as a Begginer in blackjack i had seven in Many casinos here in Mexico They Burnt out the First five cards of the decks how do you take that into account… greetings from Mexico
I once left a 5k slots ticket on the machine because I was so drunk. It’s a miracle I made it back to my room that night. The only reason I know about those lost winnings is because I had taken a video at the time.
Counting cards in GTA V doesn’t work cause they shuffle the deck every round. But using your Basic Strategy chart allowed me to win $200,000 in game. Betting $10,000 a hand and following all of the Basic Strategy plays.
Question about perfect strategy. Where I play, dealers do not check whether they have blackjack when they have a 10 or an Ace as their first card. Should you still double your eleven as a player, even though there is still a chance for the dealer to get a BJ?
At 6:32 You mentioned about it, In my opinion to generate a lot EV in a short period of time You should play 2 decks blackjack instead of 6decks blackjack definitely, so during Your carrer what % did You play 2 decks blackjack and what % 6decks blackjack ?
5:34 What I keep asking myself is: How do you know about what spread is tolerated at which casino without pushing it over the limit (and being backed off)?
You can never know for sure. Part of it is networking, part of it is paying attention to how much others are betting, and part of it is being good at not looking like a card counter. Backoffs are inevitable, so it's a balancing act of trying to maximize EV while also trying to extend longevity. The best card counters get backed off, but also get better than average play time in.
Love the content, always find this stuff interesting. As a professional poker player, I have to say it seems like a more promising avenue than counting for most. Could be wrong, maybe different people for different things but raw numbers wise, approximately the top 20-30% of poker players are winners and probably the top 5% can make great money as a side hustle or pro which I would imagine lines up a lot better than bj players.
Anyhow, at least coming from what I do my best recommendation for you guys trying to learn this skill is DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE WORK YOU NEED TO PUT IN. Do whatever you think is probably overshooting how much work you should do, and that still might not be ideal. Best of luck taking down the horrid casinos :D
I think for poker, the game is not rigged against you. The casino is just there hosting the games and collecting the rake. You just need to be better than the other players at the table. The biggest risk comes from crazy players going all in preflop turning it into a game of luck
of course the top 30% are winners, it is an obvious thing to say, how could they not be? if they were not winning, they would not be at the top
Did you publish episode 87 of the podcast out of order? I don’t see it in the app.
Colin, what chips are those in your videos and where did you get them? I really like them! :P
If Insurance can work when your counting cards, what kind of net positive count should you have before doing so?
Wouldn't it be easier to count cards with the HI cards +1 and the Lo cards -1, it makes it easier to see a high card and add.... it freaks the brain to see high card and then subtract. If you did it this way all you need to remember is a negative variance is good AKA the casino is at a negative advantage to you.
You can do it whatever way makes it easier for you but for most people, assigning -1 to high cards is easier.
You know what they say: work smarter, not harder. That's the difference between understanding something (like these counters) and improving the method (as you and I can agree).
Im in Reno, I have lots of options, but not a lot of bank rollz I have been winning but Im taking it very slowly. Ive been winning $100-$200 per day for the past week.
Like I said I dont have much bank roll, so thats been $10 to $15 at a time
Thought from a novice card counter.
Today, in my training at home, I practiced with a 1 deck shoe I always play 1 position to practice keeping the running count. I started with 10 chips and always just bet 1 chip unless i double down or split.
Today, i got a count of +7 with 1/2 deck penetration. i bet 5 chips on the next two hand each and lost both hands.
Here is my question: Is it common to lose hands when your faced with a +5-+10 advantage when using 1 deck, or would my advantage be greater if i were using 2 or more decks in the shoe
Let’s start here.
Which one is better to play one game for long hour or different games and touching each 5spine
What is your take on casinos scanning IDs before entering
I had a question. Does playing 2 $25 hands have any difference in EV or variance over a single $50 hand? Or is money on the table the same regardless?
I live in a part of the country where the nearest local casino is like 4-5 hours away
colin i download the app ( an it's great) but the app say ex.. stand on 13 but if the true count is -4 i take a card en mostly i win the hand but so i can't achievements without error in drill. do i have follow basic strategy for compliet the achievements??
The problem with counting cards in Vegas [for beginners] is some Casinos don't have face up Blackjack. So sometimes you don't get a chance to see all the cards that are dealt.
Just watched Holy Rollers. Great documentary. I miss my church dinners we had like y’all had back home before I moved to vegas. Do you guys still run a team at all?
Right on. Those days were really fun. No, not currently running a team.
Can you count cards on online apps as they don’t show how many decks they are playing with etc
Little bit of an eye roll here on the “other advantage opportunities”. Tell me a side bet that can be counted easily. The only one so know of requires you to keep track of the suit count as well.
Not talking side bets. But if I say more, other AP opportunities get ruined.
Important question: If I don't have a bankroll, can I just use the extra money from my check every week to go play and eventually build a bankroll?
My plan is to play on the weekends until I build a bankroll.
Long time watcher, you have taught me so much! Thanks Collin.
Strongly advise against that. With Card Counting you need enough funds to weather through a possible storm for example breaking even for 100 hours. If you play with extra money you have that week you will most likely be playing with very high risk. Here is a breakdown of what you need: www.blackjackapprenticeship.com/recommended-blackjack-bankroll/
When you recommend that we should be able to count through a deck of cards within 25 seconds, do the cards need to be face down in your hand or is face up okay? I did both ways and it makes a 15 second difference for me.
Most times its when the cards are facedown. But after you master that speed then it’s time to start practicing counting as if they’re being dealt out on a table.
Hey Colin, Iam curious, how much are your best students making on average say per month or year??
I want to begin attacking my local casino, am I able to get inside without playing ? To take some infos about what they offer ?
Also, what's that thing about ID registration ?
Edit : what is unrated / rated ?
Do you have a live group course?
When splitting, why do some casinos make you play the first split hand until bust or stand and only then give the other split card a second card? Others give both the 2 split cards a second card each, then go back to hitting on the first split card.
Wow. What casino are you playing that gives a second card to both hands before you play the first? I have played in Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa and have never seen that. This is interesting. Wonder if that changes the way you play the hands other than knowing two more cards to the count.
That’s a great question. I’ve noticed this too. I can’t seem to find any edge in it though, seems to be kinda pointless. But maybe there’s something I’m not seeing
interesting.
Hey Colin. Is BJA still around and getting results ?
What's your take on video blackjack machines?
hey colin, my brother just got back from vegas and told me that damn near every single table had continuous shuffling machines, which is a card counters nightmare. what are your thoughts on this?
You need to go down by Fremont St. Most of those older casinos don't use those there. You will also see 3:2 BJ there as well. Even $5 min bet tables. The buildings on the main strip didnt get built with house money that is for sure!
Yeah unfortunately on the Strip a lot of the lower limit tables have changed to CSM and/or 6:5. We did a whole video on the current state of Vegas and how you can still play it: ua-cam.com/video/E_D70PxB6sA/v-deo.html

Honest question:
If one wanted to join a blackjack table, play a hand or two, win, then leave, what would the right conditions be at the table to join in at the right time?
The highest true count possible, but even then you're only going to have a 4-6% edge so there's no real expectation to win those couple hands.
would you ever play a table that is dealer push on 22 but free double down for the player.
no
I've started counting and I typically use online casinos with a live studio option. The last few times, I've observed that the count tends to be in the tables favor but the dealer is wiping the floor with them. I'm not one to accuse a dealer of cheating but considering the shady environment, is it possible for the count to be in the players favor when the deck is stacked?
Even with a high count, you can have negative EV if you aren't playing correctly. And check the rules - if they are 6:5 or have other bad rules, the house is going to be winning pretty much the whole time regardless.
please answer , if i use martigale system and basic rules . can i play without counting ?. i try it and it work very well but i don't know if it work in long time
of course you can play without counting. of course it cannot work
1200 can go zip real quick when you time the deck wrong
I haven’t always done card counting that much, since it can be a difficult task to keep up with the count, as the cards are being dealt in front of you, as well as keeping up with the players right next to you, or even in front of you.
It gets easier the more you practice
@@Officialalmate I'm sure. Just like how one would play an instrument.
In canada they don’t have shoes anymore, may be in high stakes with 500$ min, basic strategy is the only option
So how to do it properly when a casino uses 8 decks and randomly discards one and a half out…?
Do you change basic strategy for 2 deck vs 6 deck?
there are some slight changes....for example....double down on hard 9 versus dealer 2 in DD but not in 6-8 deck
Question, I was using you're blackjack trainer on my phone. And I had a hard sixteen against the dealer's ten
true count was a zero I hit and it said that I should stand which goes against basic strategy I thought?

As a beginner I notice that there are times when a shoe can consistently runs negative and it will rarely get positive. By keeping bets at the bare minimum during these streaks you can be fortunate and win a number of hands. For professional counters, have you seen this often? And if so, how do you play a shoe that isn’t hot? I guess to state the obvious, you may just decide to go to another table.
We can leave the table like you said or keep our seat but go to the bathroom, take a phone call etc. to avoid playing the negative counts.
@@Blackjackapprenticeship I notice in my practice an interesting trend. There are times when I will have a hard count (a 12 vs a face card / or a count that the chart suggests you stand on) and the running count is either extremely positive or negative
My thought was in a case where the count is -5, -10 or even lover, hitting is reasonable, and there are more lower cards in the deck. Hitting with a more positive count is suicide.
What are your thoughts on hitting when the count is extremely negative with 50% or more deck penetration and a hand that the chart suggest you stand on.
First of all we're never going to playing extreme negative counts at all. Some APs will sit out anything negative, some will play down to -2 or 3 but beyond that the edge was far too bad to stay in the game. There are deviations in positive counts with 12 v 2 or 3 where we want to stay since it's more likely we'll have a bust card coming.

You still need to disguise your clothing so you do not look like a counter. My tips -
1. Use off-match clothing. For example, wear a blue top and yellow pants.
2. Try to avoid matching colors that are too obvious - such as black top and black pants. Try purple top and purple pants, for instance.
3. A BONUS TIP---Obviously don't wear a full face mask to the casinos to try to outwit the casino's Biometrica face-recognition software. They will still back you off because they will see that you are trying to contravene such detection obviously. You can wear a COVID-19 mask of any kind to avoid detection instead - these masks close off your mouth and nose and makes nearly any Biometrica recognition difficult if not impossible, allowing you to card-count as much as possible without virtually any back-off risk.
Another tip - cut back on your double downs. When you start to card count at a casino - avoid doubling down on your bets on your first shoes. My gut feeling is that doubling down will be seen as you are trying to count--even if it is done as part of your basic strategy (My two bits.) Only double down at much later shoes - and if you must, only once per casino session. Gradually increase the "double down" to 2 times per casino visit. And so on. Don't double down too much suddenly or you will definitely be told something like "Sorry, we will not want your action anymore and you need to leave right now, I will let you cash out but no more blackjack." (the back-off itself)--something like that.
Same for splitting. Be careful too on that--if they allow it. If the casino will not allow splitting--you are out of luck. But if you do, only do it very gradually - on the first shoes, don't split at all. Just slowly do it once in later shoes, and so on. This will greatly reduce the chance of you getting the dreaded "heat" or even worse (the back-off).
