That's a freaking foil bro!!!! It should be named foil moves
Why does the title say "Sabre Moves"? He is demonstrating Foil not sabre!!
I know, huh? Pretty idiotic to title the video this--especially when it's not a difficult change to make.
The reason you hold your non-weapon hand like that is because when you give a lunge in smallsword fencing (which foil and epee are the direct descendents of) you throw that arm backwards from that position for better balance on the lunge and a faster recovery, much in the same way a monkey does with its tail when jumping.
True, although some early smallsword/late rapier sources use the left arm to cover the chest and the neck or deflect thrusts with the hand.
Great tutorial! Thank you.
It's always a good idea to know the credentials. I am a professional fencing coach with wirld medalista and Olympians on my alumni. So, I think I understand Olympic fencing well enough. You do absolutely different things and I like it. Very rare example of real sword fight. Bravo
Exactly. This video is for beginners. With respect...
You may want to change the title of the video. the title is "Fencing Basics - Sabre Moves"; however it appears that you are in fact using the Foil
thank you for this video
You can see a Coach; Mike Pederson Playlist of USFCA Foil semenar 2010, at Coach GerryD’s UA-cam cannel.
I love fencing!
I don't think they held a lantern: they held a first, dagger, or a knife! Most duels began as an organized drunken fight and devolved into full on brawls. Only romanticized in novels. In France I think it was more civil, with the French officers reporting being surprised by the crude attacks of the British officers when challenged (Napoleonic wars), but everyone understood this is life or death so it takes a particularly refined gentleman to die without a proper fight.
The lantern thing is an Italian thing, and did happen.
@@jarrarwinks8470 Ya, and thinking about it now, if you're dueling at night to avoid laws that prohibited dueling, or if you were assaulted at night, of course you'd want to know how to fight with a lamp...
My bad.
@TheProfit11 but.. fencing swords are REALLY long. do you want to carry something like that around all day? and it might be a pain to draw it
this isn't sabre
Never bring a Sword to a light Saber fight!
Treeincement that is neither a sabre or a sabre stance
SO I think we under stand and respect each others opinion now at least. It is nice to know some background, cause now I know why we have a difference of opinion. Closest thing to sport fencing I grew up around was what I was taught from family members who are friends with the Sieniawski family. As for sport fencing I suppose this would be an ok video to show some one who is not familiar with any sword play at all, but I do still think it can hurt the performance of a more experienced fencer.
im scared haha i joined fwencing havingmy first practice in ke 2 months does fencing hurgt?
Btw, I knew Vladimir Smirnov personally. As well as the coach who made a presentation
I'll bet the origin of the "faaaabulous~" position of the off-weapon arm is largely aesthetic; it keeps the arm from interfering in a duel while also looking good. The lantern theory sounds rather dubious at best. :P
By the way, you mislabled this video; it's foil, not sabre. Oopsie :)
The lantern part is from Italia most likely from what I have heard, and was true at some point, though it was used also for sure for balance.
the epee vid is sabre
It Says saber but he’s using a foil entire time
This wire killed Vladimir Smirnov at the World Championship in 1982 in Rome. So, make no mistakes about it. This is a sport fencing, and Pederson knows the trad, in contrast to you. Yes, this is foil, not sabre, but well presented for novices.
I practice fencing on my sister with pool noodles. Its not practical, but I'm going to start lessons soon.
Don't worry about weapon type, this video is about good basic stance and foot position any fencer should know and use.
foiled again
It is foil
@TheProfit11 ok. i tried.
wow really all I do is swing I don't really care about the footing
why are the moves and stance so strict?
Cuz it's not a brawl, it's a sport with rules. Only some of it, you can apply to real life.
WB Bavier lol, again, this is a sport.
People in the uk be like.
Sorry this is Foil not Sabre
yeah the lantern theory is bs. No one is gonna be fencing at night where they need a lantern lol. They probably had a knife or shield in that hand or had it back so it is out of the way and for balance similar to what ppl do with shooting a gun one handed.
The "en gaurde" is pretty much universal throughout the 3 main weapons. I don't understand why he is using a foil for this demonstration. Since when do you put your hand up like your about to karate chop the opponent, looks like a frickin cobra. Plus his blade's bend is disgusting lol
So many things wrong with this vid :(
@TheProfit11 fencing is a civilized sport that is meant for recreation. if you want to learn self defence against muggers, then go learn krav maga; it teaches you how to disarm an enemy, and incapacitating them. dont learn fencing for self defence
why is he teaching you how to fence sabre with an austrailian gripped foil sword?
Oh? you must be referring to the BROKEN BLADE of a FOIL BEFORE tighter safety regulations were put in place on equipment. (in part this accident helped in that regard). It is my opinion that this is not presented well for novices, and is that, my opinion. And before you attempt to put some one down, do at least try and figure out who they are, as you have no ability to judge ones knowledge from a basic comment or profile on UA-cam.
-regards,
@me
"Legend has it..." And there went your credibility (What's left after the incorrect title).
No, not lanterns, although it may look that way. Generally a one handed sword was accompanied by a smaller blade or second one handed weapon. In lieu of this, a smart fighter would keep his/her unarmed hand out of the way unless there was an opening for a punch.
Who cares today? For all of you: it is a requirement, because in foil it is prohibited to cover a target area with unarmed hand. So, get lost with all your smart comments. Why don't you ask about playing soccer with hands? It is more convenient indeed....
this is foil WTF
Is it required you hold your off hand up like an idiot? I'd rather have it facing diagonally behind me as it feels more comfortable and looks far less ridiculous.
ClickDecision no, but it is a balance thing. I recommend taking fencing lessons if you want to know more.
This is foil!! Not sabre
I'm gonna listen to this gugy with his misrecognized misnamed weapon? Been fencing for decades. This is idiotic...
weapon....lol more like piece of wire. every thing this man says is wrong. this isn't how to even sport fence....and that is what is wrong even with sport fencing, it has become full of bad fencers teaching bad fencing.
