What Is a Faering Used for?

- Short answer: The faering boat is used for fishing and local transport mainly in the Norwegian fjords.
In the past faerings were the all important means of transportation in the Norse fjords, where the homesteads were isolated in the valleys between the mountains. Contact was maintained across the water of the fjords.
The faering boat is either rowed or uses a square rig to sail. The mast is made to be lowered, when not in use. It has two sets of oars and is usually between 12 and 14 feet long. Its name litterally means 4-oared.
The faering looks like a small version of the drakkar and knarr Viking ships, which is not surprising given that this is what it is. The faering is the smaller boat type of these ships, but the faering is still in use today.
Like the Viking drakkar longship and knarr the faering is clinker built with the planks making up the hull overlapping. This gives it flexibility in rough weather.
The faering was in the past heavily used for fishing in the rich Norse fjords adding to the diet and the important fish export down into Europe, which was traded by the Hanseatic league using the cog ship to transport the fish.
The faering reached as far as Greenland along with the spread of the Norwegians becoming a common boat across the North Atlantic.

I own a 20' Faering, but I'm having a difficult time finding a historically correct square sail for it.
The Vikings brought their boats across the North Sea to the Shetlands. There the (Brit versions) of these small boats are known as a "Fouraroon" (or "Fourareen"), and the 6 oared version is a "Sixaroon". Very similar hulls, just with lowered stem and stern posts.
They are definitely beautiful boats!

I have a Ness Yoal with a gaff rig, its really a fouraroon im told, from the Shetland islands.
I will be repairing the rotten bits with epoxy once shes dried out.
