What Was the Advantage of Using a Sail?

The most basic advantage of the sail is its ability to generate movement without the need to bring along any fuel. This gave it an advantage, which was very obvious in the time, when the only alternative was rowing, but even with the advent of steam and motor ships, the sail for a long time retained an advantage in its ability to cross the oceans without the need for engine fuel. Even when the diesel engine became available sails, where still often use in combination with the engine to save fuel even when having the advantage of an engine to move independent of the winds.
What primarily brought an end to the age of sail was the much improved infrastructure of refueling that was developed for the engine ships making it much more cost efficient to do away with the sails that hindered the loading and unloading of large cargo.
But even today the age of sail might have a possible renaissance in the great sea of space, where solar sails might one day bring star ships from planet to planet using the solar winds instead of the trade winds.

Grain needs to be stored for it to mature and make good flour. The sail from Australia provided that storage time whilst being transported. One reason the clippers survived so long.
