  • Changing your own brake pads and brake wear sensors can save you hundreds of dollars. This seemingly complicated job is actually pretty straight forward with a little bit of patience and the right tools.
A few years ago I took the seemingly terrifying plunge to try doing the job myself. That first time it took me most of the day but after doing the same job on a 997 and another 996, I'm now able to do both of my front brake pads in less than an hour. Tack on another 30 mins per wheel if you also want to replace your rotors.
This is a really fun job and any amateur wrench'er or car enthusiast. As ever, work at your own risk and be careful! If in doubt, as a professional.

A note on the sensors...there is a right and a left. The difference is subtle and they will still work if they are mixed up, but will fit better if used on the correct side.

The longer I own my 997, the more I'm amazed at how easy they are to work on. Going through the FSH I got with the car, the PO paid over a grand for brakes, and close to 400 for oil changes!! Haven't had to do the brakes yet, but I've done 4 oil changes so far. Under 70 bucks for material and a half an hour of my time. Gotta love the P tax! Calipers look great! Nice to see more content again. Cheers

Nice work. If you want more practice/opportunities for doing brake jobs, get a set of pads to run on the track and start tracking your car. You can change the pads back to street pads when you’re done!

Thanks for the DIY video!, do you recommend the TEXTAR pads for a 991.1 S ? My car will need pads soon and I'm looking for something that doesn't make so much dust or squeak, Thank you for your advice!
