Ford is responding to capitalistic demand. It's more profitable to offer parts and products to potential competitors in the e-space than it is to litigate copies. No one needs to bother copying a product if they can just buy it and use it in their own designs. Just wait when they get really moving on their BlueOval City battery productions and selling the sk inno cells.

Part of the temptation for every manufacturer is on the software side of things. Where every single computer in your stuff is a black box of secrets that usually has no aftermarket alternative. Which gives them a lot of power over the product. They can make any alternatives they don't control incompatible with the stroke of a few keys and a forced update. We have seen it with Apple, Tesla, and John Deere. We have seen it with printers and many of the new "internet of things" products (Who wants DRM for their toaster or light switch?). Heck even McDonalds ice cream machines breakdown mostly due to software BS.
Software being used to take control away from the consumer is a growing trend. Especially since companies like Apple are so successful because of it. Hopefully Ford and other companies go the Microsoft/Android route instead of the Apple route. Who really knows.

An electric motor is just series of copper coils around a magnet inside a metal housing and most of the other moving components are already present in combustion cars like brakes and coolant loops (just it goes to the battery instead of the engine in an EV). Even the motor control software is simpler than a combustion engine since there is no throttle unit or fuel injectors to worry about. Removing the combustion engine takes A LOT of complexity out of cars and could be the beginning a new world of easier car repair if companies don't get overly controling about it.

When I bought my Model S 2 1/2 years ago, I knew there weren't too many 3rd party repair shops, but I had hopes that once my car was out of warranty, things would get better. Instead, they've gotten worse. Now even if you want to pay Tesla to fix your car, you need to wait weeks before you can get it into a service center. You can no longer walk into a service center and order parts (those that they will actually sell you) or call anyone on the phone. It's a miserable experience when something goes wrong.

Last year I got a new Bronco Sport and it's perfect for my needs. While I absolutely love it, I decided that it will be my last gasoline powered vehicle and I would eventually get an electric vehicle. Of course that would be many years later since I plan to keep the Bronco Sport for a very long time. This gives me high hopes that I could eventually convert it to an electric vehicle instead of buying a whole new vehicle at a much higher price.

As far as I'm concerned once you make your final payment on a car. The manufacturer should be obligated to give you software. That helps you tackle electrical issues, full diagnostics, access/read/disable all the modules, programming and of course key duplication.
Also a complimentary bag of the specialty tools needed for repairs would be nice.
If a manufacturer decides that they're not going to produce a particular part anymore they should open up support for third-party companies.
Any person has ever owned a Mercedes and experienced an "All keys lost" or had a Skreem (a part they don't even make anymore for the old switchblade keys) malfunction knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Yeah but with the e crate motor, it’s no more complicated than dropping in a modern efi crate motor in an older car. As someone who’s dropped an LS inside a a 1970 VW beetle, the amount of wiring, ecu programming, esc and abs programming, and fuel system manipulation is analogous to what you’re looking at that you’d need to do if you’re gonna drop a Mach E crate motor in an older chassis.
It’s just a matter of time until someone in the market starts selling software packages to program these electric motors for specific applications analogous to downloadable ECU tunes. They’d make bank.
