This past Wednesday, I returned a rental car to the SAN airport and needed to get to Oceanside, so I chose the Coaster. It was my first experience using public transportation in SoCal, and it was excellent. On time, clean, comfortable, Wifi, inexpensive, and the route is beautiful to boot. Cannot ask for more.
I couldn't agree more! Coaster was fantastic, and for such a cheap ride too, it's incredible!
Most people don't know this: Coaster fares are valid on Amtrak all the time, except for a few holidays and major events. As a result, we have basically twice-an-hour service from Oceanside and Solana Beach to San Diego. That's just $13 for a 80 mile round trip.
I didn't know that! That's a great value, especially for a ride on Amtrak!
@@LonestarTrips - You're welcome! Personally, another option is the $15 regional day pass, which gives unlimited rides on buses and trolleys as well as Coaster all day and night. It's fun to travel around America's Finest City!
I thought only passes were valid on Amtrak, not single-ride tickets
@@gparyani - No, all Coaster fares are valid.on Amtrak, except during high travel periods like major holidays and Comic Con. It pays to read the fine print.
That is interesting that Coaster and AmTrak override the same routes, it seems like Coaster is more value driven...
For sure. Coaster is definitely more of a commuter oriented service, whereas Amtrak is more intercity.
Metrolink continues from Oceanside to LA Union Station. If timed right, you could travel the entire corridor without ever stepping foot on Amtrk.
Coaster is a commuter rail. Amtrak is an intercity train. However if you have a coaster day pass or monthly pass you can ride the Amtrak to any of the stops the Amtrak stops in San Diego county it’s called rail 2 rail. Any stops after Oceanside you need a Amtrak tickets
Amtrak*
They don’t override. They use the same routes.
Amtrak also skips a lot of stops (only stopping in San Diego, Solana Beach, and Oceanside) whereas Coaster stops at Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Sorrento valley as well as the aforementioned stations.
2:47 I read that LOSSAN hopes to build a new intermodal rail station serving Coaster, San Diego Trolley, and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains that is dedicated specifically to San Diego International Airport. Presumably, the location of this new station will be either around or next to the existing Washington Street San Diego Trolley station. Hopefully we will see the station built within the next few years.
I plan to cut some new videos recently including a two part series on the Coaster and Sprinter. At Oceanside, it amazes me that they've got a lack of decent signage pointing people to the location of track 3 and how many passengers looking for the Coaster and track 3 in general wander into the Sprinter loading area and onto a Sprinter train. If you come to Oceanside again, you might want to point out the obvious lack of way finding signage and information such as an updated map of a facility and some improvements to signage around the station including a few new signs directing passengers to where the location of track 3 is. Your Coaster arrived on track because it was on its way back to the yard a few miles to the north side of the station.
My trip will be broken into Oceanside to Solana Beach and Solana Beach to Downtown San Diego. The Sprinter Videos will be broken into two videos also, one from Oceanside to Vista and the other from Vista to Escondido. I have already written scripts for the Coaster videos set. BTW: At Tustin, there is a Subway Sandwich shop inside the Gasoline Station, and a Jack in the Box Restaurant within a brisk walk from the station. You probably ride the Coaster on the old schedule, because train #661 is now known as #645 (as the numbers start with #620 on weekdays with weekends using the 670 and 680 number groups..
I would like to meet you at some point.
Can you get off at a stop and get back on a later train with same ticket?
I'll be taking this heading to Legoland next week!
Cool ride = cool train
Awesome video!!
Need more views out of the window. This is a scenic route.
Very nice video. Thank you.
🚈 🚉 🚂
The coaster interior reminds me a lot of metrolinks interior
I'm sad because you didn't say anything about Carlsbad. :(
Great video! I get to do this run a few times next week. How do you think it compares to the TRE in DFW?
It’s honestly very similar. I actually rode on TRE last weekend to get footage for this channel, and I have to say there aren’t a ton of differences. The major ones are train length and the interior is more similar to Coaster’s old interior than the new one.
looks exactly like TRE to me
Cummins powered: QSK95 - 4,000hp
Not these locomotives! All Chargers are Siemens powered, however the SCB-40 makes 4000hp, while the SC-44 makes 4,400hp, and the new ALC-42s make 4.200hp. The numbering in the names represents the horsepower output on each locomotive.
@@LonestarTrips Didn't realize Siemens made their own prime movers.
Looks like the Tri Rail in South Florida
nice video
0:48 (I’m good friends with him!)
I am a local to that area!
Small world, huh?! I have to say he was super inviting when I was boarding, so do send him my regards!
Will do!
I also believe I met you on the train! I might have been wearing a silver salty crew jacket!
@@railsofRP Nice! I don't remember seeing you, but I bet it was hard to miss me going up and down the aisle holding a phone to my chest!
@@LonestarTrips it’s no big deal! Maybe we’ll hang out sometime!
@@railsofRP Next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to let you know!
Oceanside has more TVMs over by the tracks that Sprinter uses.
Do you if there are any outlets there to charge our devices? I’m planning to take a trip to Oceanside next Monday. Thank you!
Someone explain how to use the coaster pass to hop onto the Amtrak and extend the. Ride
How comfy were the new seats
How do you get the ticket for ride all day ticket? And how much is the ride all day ticket? Planning on going today
I hate how the machines don't use touchscreen
My room mate Steve has to learn that their more to life than eating sleeping and working Since I am 7 2 Steve feels that I am too old to travel alone
4:22 these really do 90mph? Thats impressive by most American standards
They hit 90mph during ideal parts of the route, but that's not very often because the southern third of the route winds through canyons
Only San Diego - Sorrento valley has slow speeds. After Solana beach, the Coaster always pushes 90 mph between every station including instances of the train going 91-95 mph to make way for other trains.
maybe someday we can take the shinkansen from houston to dallas
I certainly hope so! Hopefully once the California High Speed Rail project is completed, and people see the potential of high speed rail in the US, there will be more public support behind the Texas Central and thus will be completed within the next couple years.
I know the driver of Coaster train 661
who is it?
@@thiagoknows3504 his name is Mark
can you get Amtrak points for riding this?
Edit: 6$!!!???
I don't think you can get Amtrak points for it as the points system is based on purchases through Amtrak, and seeing as tickets are bought through Coaster, there's no way for them to transfer. That being said, the tickets are valid on Surfliner trains as far as Oceanside, so it's not a huge loss. Also the $6 isn't outrageous, especially considering how far Coaster runs, and that you can technically take an Amtrak train using that same ticket.
@@LonestarTrips good answer. 6$ is a deal, the same trip on Amtrak would be like 18$. I think trashing the coaster to Oceanside then switching to Metrolink to get to LA is the cheapest way

Your camera work needs work.
This is an older video. I invested in a gimbal a few months after filming this.
